Some Windows 11 users are reporting unexpected problems after installing Microsoft’s latest security update. The complaints started appearing only a day or two after the patch rolled out, with several people describing system crashes, freezes, and other stability issues.

In a few cases, users claim their drives became inaccessible on certain Samsung Galaxy Book laptops, while others point to graphical glitches or GPU-accelerated apps crashing on Dell Precision systems. These examples are anecdotal for now, but they do suggest the update may be triggering compatibility issues on some hardware.

Microsoft’s December update for Windows 11 was meant to improve security and reliability. Instead, it has left some users complaining that their PCs feel slower than before.

The issue appears to be linked to the December 2025 cumulative update, KB5072033, which was rolled out to Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. After installing the update, users began noticing higher resource usage and sluggish system behavior than before.

At the center of the complaints is a quiet change to the AppX Deployment Service, known as AppXSVC. The service handles the installation and updating of Microsoft Store apps such as Calculator, Photos, and other built-in tools.

Before the update, AppXSVC was set to run in “Manual” mode, meaning it only started when needed. The December update switched it to “Automatic” startup, causing it to launch during boot and remain active, or repeatedly restart in the background.

For some users, that change has translated into noticeably higher CPU, memory, and disk usage. Reports of AppXSVC-related performance issues are not new, dating back several years, but some users say the December update has made the problem more noticeable. Reports have also flagged the update as potentially worsening performance on lower-end systems.

The situation has been particularly frustrating for IT teams. In managed environments, AppXSVC’s new start-stop behavior can trigger monitoring tools like Zabbix to log repeated crash alerts. One IT professional, Thomas J., said the alerts quickly became overwhelming, forcing administrators to manually suppress them.

A sneaky new strain of the ClickFix malware is making the rounds, and it’s going after the easiest victim of all: anyone who trusts a Windows update prompt. Security researchers at Huntress say the attackers have managed to put together a full-screen fake update screen that looks just convincing enough to trick people into giving it full access — all through a simple copy-paste trick.

The scam tends to show up on shady websites, mostly adult streaming pages filled with sketchy pop-ups. One misplaced click on an ad or a fake age check, and your entire browser suddenly turns into what looks like a legitimate Windows update stuck at 95%. It then claims you need to press Windows + R and paste a special command to finish the update. Of course, that’s exactly what the malware wants.

That command silently launches mshta, a built-in Windows tool, and pulls down a payload from a remote server. To make detection harder, the code includes tons of junk commands meant to throw off security software. In one of the odder twists, part of the malicious code is actually tucked inside a PNG image — the malware pulls hidden shellcode straight from the pixels and then injects itself into other running processes using .NET.

Once it’s embedded inside the system, the second stage kicks in. Known infostealers like Rhadamanthys or LummaC2 get dropped onto the machine, and from there it’s open season on passwords, browser cookies, banking logins, and crypto wallet data. Everything gets scooped up and shipped off to attackers.

Researchers say the campaign has been active since at least early October and is still very much ongoing, with multiple look-alike domains hosting the fake update screen. Forensic analysts also found random, useless strings in the code — including a weird reference to an old UN speech — apparently just thrown in to waste analysts’ time.

The worst part is that this attack relies entirely on social engineering. No file downloads. No obvious malware pop-ups. Just a website tricking you into running its command for it.

The quick takeaway:

Never copy and paste commands from a random webpage, no matter how official it looks. Real Windows updates don’t ask you to open the Run box — ever.

It broke support for USB keyboards and mice inside WinRE — the part of Windows that kicks in when something goes wrong, like failed startups, malware cleanup, or system resets. Without working input devices, users were left staring at the recovery screen, unable to even select options or type commands.

Reports quickly spread across Reddit and Microsoft’s support forums, with some desperate users digging out ancient PS/2 keyboards or pairing Bluetooth devices just to escape the recovery loop.

“After installing the Windows security update released on October 14, 2025 (KB5066835), USB devices, such as keyboards and mice, do not function in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Premium costs $14.99 per month and expands the library to more than 200 titles. Games can be played across console, PC, and cloud. Notable additions include Diablo IV, Hogwarts Legacy, and Grand Theft Auto V. Premium also provides faster cloud performance, in-game bonuses for supported titles, and access to Xbox-published games within a year of release. Rewards are worth up to $50 per year, with 2× points on purchases and about 5 percent cashback on eligible Game Pass titles.

Ultimate now costs $29.99 per month, a 50 percent increase. Microsoft says this is the biggest upgrade the plan has received. The catalog grows to more than 400 games with over 75 day-one releases a year. Confirmed titles include Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Ninja Gaiden 4, High on Life 2, and The Outer Worlds 2. Starting November 18, Ultimate will include Fortnite Crew, normally $11.99 per month, and Ubisoft+ Classics, valued at $7.99 per month. Other features include Xbox Cloud Gaming up to 1440p with shorter wait times, and expanded Rewards up to $100 annually with 4× points on purchases and up to 10 percent back on select games and add-ons.

Community response has been divided. Some players praised the addition of Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics, saying the value justifies the higher cost. Microsoft is testing a feature in Windows 11 that brings video wallpapers back to the desktop. The option was spotted in the latest Insider builds and will allow users to set looping videos—like MP4 or MKV files—as their background, all without third-party apps.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because Microsoft tried something similar before. Windows Vista launched with DreamScene, a feature that let you run short videos as your wallpaper. It didn’t make it into Windows 7, and over time apps such as Wallpaper Engine stepped in to fill the gap. For many younger Windows users, the idea of built-in video wallpapers might actually feel new.

From what’s been seen so far, the setup looks simple. Instead of using extra software, you’ll be able to pick a video straight from the Personalization menu, much like choosing a static wallpaper or slideshow today. Microsoft hasn’t shared details on performance or battery impact yet, which will matter a lot for laptops. Third-party apps can sometimes be heavy on resources, and the hope is that Microsoft’s native support will be more efficient.

The timing makes sense. Windows 11 has leaned on customization as one of its selling points, with new themes, widgets, and visual tweaks arriving in updates. Adding video wallpapers feels like an easy way to give users more control over how their desktops look and feel.

It also raises questions about how this will affect Wallpaper Engine and other apps that have built strong communities over the years. Those tools still offer deeper libraries and effects, but for casual users who just want a moving background, Windows 11’s built-in option could be enough.

At gamescom 2025 in Cologne, Microsoft announced that the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X handheld consoles will launch on October 16, 2025. What remains missing is the US pricing, which has delayed the start of pre-orders. In an interview with IGN, Microsoft and Asus confirmed that tariffs in the US have forced them to postpone the announcement of prices and, as a result, pre-orders. Both companies said pricing details and pre-order availability will be revealed in September or October.

European pricing has been consistent: €599 for the Xbox Ally and €899 for the Ally X. The situation in the US has been far less stable. On August 20, Best Buy listed the Ally at $549.99 and the Ally X at $899.99, but later replaced those figures with placeholder values of $9999.99. The price of the Ally has already shifted multiple times, starting at $499.99, then rising to $599.99, before appearing to settle at $549.99 just days before August 20. With the PlayStation 5 also seeing price increases in the US, the final figures for the Ally and Ally X remain uncertain.

Pre-orders were originally scheduled to open on August 20 but were postponed. Following recent investigations, a new target date of September 25, 2025, has been identified. This remains tentative, as the schedule has been adjusted several times in recent weeks.

Alongside the consoles, Asus is also preparing a new accessory. The ROG Raikiri II Pro Controller has been confirmed for release in North America. It will retail at $189.99, which is $20 more than the original ROG Raikiri Pro at launch. Technical specifications and feature upgrades for this controller have not yet been disclosed.

It comes with 16GB or 32GB LPDDR5x RAM and storage options of 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB, using a removable Gen 4 SSD. The laptop includes a Full HD Surface Studio Camera with AI effects, Omnisonic speakers with Dolby Atmos, an improved keyboard with better key travel, and a large haptic precision touchpad.

Location support includes GNSS L1, GPS, Galileo, BeiDou, QZSS, and NAVIC. For ports, the device includes two USB-C ports with USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 support (can connect up to two 4K monitors), one USB-A 3.1 port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a Surface Connect port.

Pricing and Availability

The Surface Laptop 5G is available in Silver. The base model with Intel Core Ultra 5, 16GB RAM, and 256GB storage is priced at USD 1,799.99. The top variant with Intel Core Ultra 7, 32GB RAM, and 1TB storage costs USD 2,699.99. It will be sold through Microsoft’s business partners and select Verizon stores in the coming months.

Microsoft has quietly removed its official guidance for bypassing Windows 11’s stringent hardware requirements. This change, made after the release of Windows 11 version 24H2, eliminates the workaround from its support documentation, signaling the company’s shift away from accommodating unsupported devices.

When Windows 11 debuted in October 2021, it faced significant criticism over its strict hardware requirements, particularly the need for modern CPUs and TPM 2.0 support. 

To address user concerns, Microsoft published a workaround allowing users to bypass these checks by tweaking a Registry key. This allowed unsupported PCs to upgrade to Windows 11, albeit with a disclaimer warning of potential system instability and the risk of serious errors.

The now-deleted workaround involved creating a specific Registry key:

• Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup
• Name: AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU
• Type: REG_DWORD
• Value: 1

Microsoft explicitly warned users of the risks associated with modifying the Registry, noting that it could lead to issues requiring a system reinstall. However, the company no longer officially endorses this bypass method, even though the workaround itself may still function.

The official workaround now is to buy new hardware

Instead, Microsoft’s current recommendation is for users to upgrade to newer hardware that meets Windows 11’s system requirements. The move comes after repeated clarifications from Microsoft that it was not relaxing the hardware eligibility criteria for Windows 11.

The company has consistently emphasized the importance of these requirements for performance, security, and reliability.  Partners like Dell and AMD have also likely aligned with this position.

While the registry trick may still work in some cases, Microsoft has made it clear that it no longer guarantees a smooth experience on unsupported devices. With this change, the company is doubling down on its recommendation to opt for newer hardware, aligning with its long-term strategy for Windows 11.

The 13.8-inch model offers up to 20 hours of video playback and 12 hours of web usage. Both models include a precision haptic touchpad, a backlit keyboard, and dual studio microphones with Dolby Atmos speakers.

These laptops are made with sustainability in mind using 67.6% recycled content, including 100% recycled aluminum and rare earth metals. The battery cells use 100% recycled cobalt, supporting Microsoft’s carbon-negative goals.

Microsoft has announced that it will soon offer developers the tools to build AI apps. For those unfamiliar, the DeepSeek R1-based AI features on Copilot+ PCs won’t require an internet connection to function. It also reduces concerns about data privacy as the user data will no longer need to be uploaded to the cloud for processing.

Here’s the rollout plan

Although the company hasn’t released an exact timeline yet, they have at least shared some details about it. The relatively new Snapdragon X-powered devices will be the first to run DeepSeek R1-based features, with Intel and AMD systems joining the party later. It’s not surprising though, as the Snapdragon X chips bring much more capable and power-efficient NPUs to consumer-grade devices.

Microsoft will start with “DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-1.5B”. The first wave of devices to get this upgrade are those powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite chips. Think sleek laptops from brands like Asus, Lenovo, Dell, HP, and Acer. These devices already pack NPUs with 45 TOPS (that’s a lot of AI muscle), so they’re perfect for handling these new models.

Intel’s Core Ultra 200V devices are next in line, followed by AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 series. Interestingly, AMD’s already dropped some guides for DeepSeek R1 Distill, even for their older Ryzen 8040/7040 chips. Sure, those older chips don’t have the same NPU firepower as the newer ones, but hey, it’s nice to see AMD keeping things inclusive.

A recent report by The Information has sparked conversations about Microsoft’s long-term plans for its Xbox division. According to the report, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella considered the possibility of shutting down the division in 2021. At a critical decision point, Nadella evaluated whether to exit the gaming market or pursue a path of significant expansion, which ultimately led to the acquisition of major gaming studios Bethesda (for $7.5 billion) and Activision Blizzard (for $75.4 billion).

Microsoft has denied these claims, but the report raises important questions about the division’s performance and future direction. As we know, Xbox hardware sales have seen a decrease, with a reported 29% decline compared to the previous year. In response, Microsoft has been focusing more on its Game Pass subscription service.

Despite this shift in priorities, the Xbox division did not meet its revenue growth targets in 2023, falling short of the 11% benchmark linked to CEO Satya Nadella’s bonus for the year. Notably, Microsoft has stopped tying Nadella’s compensation goals to Game Pass growth, which may signal waning confidence in the Game Pass model.

The company has set a target of surpassing 100 million subscribers by 2030, a substantial increase from the 34 million reported as of February 2024. Reaching this goal would require tripling the subscriber base within five years, with an annual growth rate of 40%.

Windows 11 24H2 update is here and it’s coming to your machine whether you like it or not, well, almost. Microsoft has shifted gears on its update policy for Windows 11 24H2, the latest iteration of its desktop operating system. 

Since October 2024, it’s been available as an optional upgrade, but starting January 16, 2025, things are changing. Microsoft has begun automatically downloading and installing Windows 11 24H2 on compatible Windows 11 PCs.

This forceful update is limited to consumer PCs running Windows 11 Home and Pro versions. So if you’re on an enterprise edition, you can breathe a sigh of relief for now. 

Microsoft is also taking a staged approach, so not everyone will see the update notification right away. They’ll gradually push the update to a subset of users, monitor for bugs and issues, and then expand the rollout further.

The reasoning behind this seems to be to ensure a smoother update experience. By taking a measured approach, Microsoft can identify and squash any major problems that might arise before a wider release. This staged rollout also gives them a chance to gather feedback from early adopters and address any compatibility concerns.

If you’re not one for waiting, you can always check for updates manually. Just head over to Settings > Windows Update and select “Check for updates”. If your device is compatible and Microsoft has flipped the switch for your account, you’ll see the option to download and install version 24H2.

There have been some reports of glitches with Windows 11 24H2, particularly related to games, but Microsoft assures us that most of these have been resolved with recent patches. 

That said, the potential for new, unforeseen issues always exists with major updates. If you’re particularly risk-averse, you can use the “Pause Updates” feature in Windows Update to defer the update for up to five weeks. This will buy you some time to do your own research and make sure critical software is compatible with the latest Windows version.

Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, recently opened up about a career-defining mistake that cost the company a staggering $400 billion. Speaking at an event hosted by venture firm Village Global, Gates candidly discussed Microsoft’s failure to secure a foothold in the mobile operating system market—a lapse that allowed Google’s Android to dominate as the go-to non-Apple platform.

“You know, in the software world, particularly for platforms, these are winner-take-all markets,” Gates explained in his conversation with Eventbrite CEO Julia Hartz. “The greatest mistake ever is the whatever mismanagement I engaged in that caused Microsoft not to be what Android is. Android is the standard non-Apple phone form platform. That was a natural thing for Microsoft to win.”

Gates did simple math that if Microsoft had captured the second-best spot in the mobile OS space, the company could have claimed a $400 billion slice of the pie—money that instead bolstered Google.

The Missed Opportunity

Apple’s iPhone debuted in June 2007, followed by Android-powered devices in September 2008. Microsoft’s entry into the smartphone arena, the Windows Phone 7, arrived much later in October 2010. By then, the mobile OS market was all but sewn up, with Android and iOS collectively claiming 99.9% of the market share.

Gates acknowledged that being late to the game sealed Microsoft’s fate in mobile. “If you’re there with half as many apps or 90 percent as many apps, you’re on your way to complete doom,” he said.

Microsoft’s mobile misstep contrasts sharply with its dominance in the PC market. The company’s Windows OS transformed personal computing in the 1990s and remains a cornerstone of its $3 trillion valuation. Yet, as Gates put it, had Microsoft succeeded in the mobile race, “we would be the company.”

Rich Miner’s Retort

Gates’ reflections didn’t go unnoticed by Rich Miner, co-founder of Android. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Miner offered a sharp rebuttal:

“I literally helped create Android to prevent Microsoft from controlling the phone the way they did the PC—stifling innovation. So it’s always funny for me to hear Gates whine about losing mobile to Android.”

So, it looks like Microsoft also contributed (albeit indirectly) to the inception of Android. In its heyday, Microsoft’s dominance in the PC market was often criticized for discouraging competition and innovation. 

Android’s open-source model, by contrast, was designed to provide an alternative to proprietary ecosystems, including those of both Microsoft and Apple.

Miraculously, he only suffered a broken bone in his left foot and some road rash, escaping what could have been life-threatening injuries.

Astonishingly, the Xbox Series S survived the ordeal. Despite being dragged under a truck and sustaining visible damage to its box, the console powered on without hesitation, running smoothly as if nothing had happened.

Reflecting on the incident, he shared, “If the box wasn’t in my bag, I could have hit my head or scraped my back badly. It’s surreal to think a gaming console saved me.”

Microsoft‘s controversial Recall feature, intended to track user activity on Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs, has been delayed again. Initially set to launch with these new laptops in June, Recall faced significant privacy concerns due to its extensive tracking capabilities.

On June 13th, the company announced that Recall would be removed from the initial Copilot+ PC launch and instead released as a preview within the Windows Insider Program (WIP).

Today’s update extends the wait for public access to Recall even further. Originally expected to be available “in the coming weeks” for WIP users, the preview is now pushed back to October. This delay suggests that Microsoft is still working on addressing security issues and refining the feature with input from the Insider community.

Microsoft’s statement reads, “With a commitment to delivering a trustworthy and secure Recall (preview) experience, we’re sharing an update that Recall will be available to Windows Insiders starting in October.”

Microsoft has finally announced the 7th Edition Surface and 11th Edition Surface Pro laptops in the Indian market. These laptops feature Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus processors and offer Copilot+ support as well. The latest Surface series was first announced back in May, and it’s now arriving in India.

Microsoft Surface Pro 11th Edition

The Surface Pro (2024) is the latest top end laptop from the American tech giant. It packs a 2-in-1 design since its Surface Pro Flex Keyboard is detachable. There is also a customizable haptic touchpad and integrated pen storage. The laptop is equipped with either the Snapdragon X Elite or Snapdragon X Plus with Qualcomm Hexagon NPU. The company claims that the 11th Edition Surface Pro is 90 percent faster than the Surface Pro 9.

These processors are paired with up to 32GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 1TB of removable Gen 4 SSD storage. Connectivity options include two USB 4 ports (supports up to three external 4K displays), WiFi 7, optional 5G support, and Bluetooth 5.4. The front sports a 13-inch display, which can be upgraded to an OLED panel with HDR support. It runs on the Windows 11 Home operating system out of the box.

Buyers also get a 10-megapixel camera on the back, while the front houses a quad HD front camera with AI effects. For audio, you get 2W stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support. Microsoft is also offering a whole new white version of the Xbox series S.

The white Xbox Series X boasts 1TB of storage and is slated for release later this year with a price tag of $449.99. This announcement comes alongside the reveal of a special edition 2TB “Galaxy Black” version of the original Xbox Series X, priced at $599.99. For budget-conscious gamers, Microsoft is also offering a new white version of the Xbox Series S, their smaller $299 console, with 1TB of storage priced at $349.99.

The white exterior of the new Xbox Series X matches the “robot white” color scheme of the Xbox Series S. While leaks suggested Microsoft might have upgraded the cooling system for this white model, official confirmation will likely have to wait for console teardowns.

You may have already heard about Windows 11‘s Microsoft Recall, which continuously records one’s activities in a series of screenshots and activity logs. It is aimed at helping out users by answering questions related to their recent activity. While the activity logs and screenshots might be helpful to you (probably asking for a password you’ve forgotten) it could also pose security risks.

In the latest news, Jaime Teevan, chief scientist and technical fellow at Microsoft Research, was asked to talk about the data privacy concerns surrounding Microsoft Recall at the US university’s Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence’s fifth-anniversary conference. However, she seemed to be unwilling to get to the point.

Erik Brynjolfsson, director of the Stanford Digital Economy Lab, started by mentioning that there was “kind of a backlash against all the privacy challenges” around Microsoft’s new Recall feature. Brynjolfsson urged to know more about “both the pluses and minuses of using all that data and some of the risks that create and also some of the opportunities.”

“Yeah, and so it’s a great question, Erik. This has come up throughout the morning as well – the importance of data. And this AI revolution that we’re in right now is really changing the way we understand data. Microsoft generally helps large enterprises manage their data, create data, share data, and that data is really something that makes the business of work different in the context of generative AI.” the Microsoft official responded. “But of course, we are rethinking what data means and how we use it, how we value it, how it gets used.”

Observing her unwillingness to get to the point, Brynjolfsson further asked “Is it stored locally?” He shared his concerns about data privacy. “So suppose I activate Recall, and I don’t know if I can, but when you have something like that available, I would be worried about all my personal files going up into the cloud, Microsoft, or whatever. Do you have it kept locally?”

Teevan finally confirmed that the screenshots and activity logs are stored locally. “So Recall is a feature that captures information. It’s a local Windows functionality, nothing goes into the cloud, everything’s stored locally.”

While the information is stored locally, it might not be a complete solution to the problem. The saved files could also come in handy for a system intruder. The files stored in Recall’s unencrypted SQLite database can still be extracted and accessed, which might not be ideal for certain scenarios.

Microsoft Recall is turned on by default in Windows 11 Copilot + PCs. However, you can disable the functionality from Settings.
