Xiaomi recently hinted that it will be halting MIUI 11 Developer ROM updates by next week. This news began fuelling speculations that the company was planning to commence MIUI 12 development. To this end, the Chinese giant started rolling out the MIUI 11 beta 20.3.25 update which is expected to be the last MIUI 11 beta update ever.

Interestingly, the Mi 10 Pro and Mi MIX 2S models enrolled on the Developer program were absent from the models getting the weekly MIUI beta update. Thus, the two models didn’t get the latest MIUI 11 beta 20.3.25 update.

Xiaomi has now come out to clarify why the update wasn’t pushed to the two flagship models. The Chinese company stated in a Weibo post that the MIUI developers had issues with the compilation of the latest beta package for the duo, hence the suspension of the rollout. It is expected that the update will be pushed in no distant time.

MIUI 12 may not be announced until the second half of 2020, but the MIUI team is expected to start internal testing followed by closed beta and then open beta in the coming weeks. The update is expected to still be based on Android 10 in Xiaomi’s usual pattern while some models released later in the year will run MIUI 12 based on Android 11. Sadly, Xiaomi has not been swift in pushing the latest Android update and that isn’t expected to change any time soon.

Xiaomi MIUI’s official development team has made an important new announcement earlier today (23rd March 2020). In a beta update patch for the MIUI 20.3.23 build, the team shared a message informing users that this week is the last week of updates for the MIUI 11 custom skin, which may be indicative of development starting on the MIUI 12.

For those unaware, MIUI is a custom skin based on the Android OS platform. Its latest versions are based on Android 10 while the news may signify a new generation being announced or showcased soon. Previously, the MIUI development team had delayed the MIUI 11 release for the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro, Mi 10, and even Mi 10 Pro due to incomplete testings, and has also caused the delay for the Redmi Note 8.

This delay may largely have been affected by the recent Coronavirus pandemic that has affected the world, especially China. So we will have to wait and see what the break in development may actually signify. For those unaware, China recently suffered from a viral outbreak which quickly turned into a global epidemic. It is one of the major reasons for alarm across the globe and readers are advised to be cautious and be informed regarding the subject.

Interestingly, a few people had also caught on certain official MIUI websites featuring signs of the MIUI 12. When users attempted to access the relevant data or opt in for closed beta testing, they were met with a prompt informing them of how they did not meet the required conditions. Xiaomi has released a new developer version of MIUI 11 to the company’s last year flagship Xiaomi Mi 9. The latest developer update for the device with build number 20.3.19 brings a number of new features including document scan, super power saver mode, and clipboard permissions.

Although Xiaomi is currently known for its smartphones, it is the company’s MIUI Android skin that helped to build its empire. MIUI is one of the few Android skins that comes in various editions. For instance, the builds are released in the developer, beta, and stable channels. They are further differentiated by the regions where the phones are sold. Whenever the company feels to introduce new features, it is initially tested in the developer builds.

Unsurprisingly, that is what Xiaomi has done with the latest MIUI 11 developer release v20.3.19 for the Mi 9. This new build has added a variety of new features including the much-needed document scanning ability in the camera app. Users can now easily scan any type of documents easily without any third-party app and also enhance them on the go with in-built tools. Another interesting feature is the addition of clipboard permissions that prevent other apps from accessing them. This update also brings a new super power-saving mode along with fixes for several issues.

Xiaomi released MIUI 11 just a few months back and now reports have already started popping up regarding the next iteration of the company’s Android skin called MIUI 12. One of the latest leaks includes an alleged release timeline, whereas a new report suggests the development to begin as soon as next week.

According to a Mi Community post titled ‘MIUI 12 Official and Update Schedule’, which has been now taken down, the first private beta builds of MIUI 12 will be released in September, followed by public beta builds from October. Lastly, the stable release is expected to begin in December. However, it is important to note that this information was posted by a profile with a tag ‘Mi Influencer’. And therefore, it is highly recommended to digest this MIUI 12 release schedule with a pinch of salt.

On the other hand, the changelog of the latest MIUI in-test development build mentioned something big to be announced next week. Now, when users in China search on the official MIUI website to participate in the beta program, the ‘Not Found’ error dialog prompt mentions ‘MIUI 12’ suggesting the big announcement scheduled for next week is indeed to do something about MIUI 12. Hopefully, we will get more official information directly from Xiaomi itself, unlike the above-alleged update schedule.

As per previous rumors, the MIUI 12 is expected to bring features like more refined system-wide dark mode, new GUI, support for 16:9 aspect ratio displays, and more.

In the past few weeks, Xiaomi has been busy rolling out both beta and stable builds of MIUI 11 to its devices. Today, the company has rolled out another beta MIUI 11 update for the Mi Mix 2S, but this time, it’s based on the new Android 10 OS. Also, the MIUI 11 9.10.25 beta build brings the latest October security patch to the device. 

Given that this is a beta build, Xiaomi recommends backing up your data before upgrading the Mi Mix 2S to the new version. Note that this particular beta version ( MIUI 11 9.10.25 ) could be buggy since it updates the device from Android 9 Pie to the latest Android 10 OS. The update log also mentions that there could be third-party compatibility issues. So, some apps may not function properly in this beta build. 

Also, note that the Mi Mix 2S received a stable release (MIUI 11.0.2.0) of MIUI 11 earlier this month, but it was based on Android 9. So Android 10 is available only in the beta release right now.
