MIUI 9 is in the news once again, this time around it has to do with the Closed Beta program which is currently on. Xiaomi is reported to have revealed that the MIUI 9 Closed Beta program has received applicants in tremendous numbers. Presently the number of applicants for the Closed Beta program has surpassed 1 million persons.  Just recently, that figure was revealed to be around 700,000 which was seen as the largest in the company’s history.

Presently, the applications for the Closed Beta program is around 1.56 million persons, barely two weeks after the Beta program opened. Xiaomi first disclosed that it would be opening up registration for MIUI 9 closed beta program on July 19, while the program itself commenced on July 21. The first batch of models to get the Closed Beta included the Mi 6, Redmi Note 4X (Snapdragon version) and the Mi 5X which was launched recently with MIUI onboard. Xiaomi only earlier today hinted that the Mi 5 will get its own update (Closed Beta) on August 7 while the 12 models billed to get theirs on August 25 will get rolling in mid-August.

The news of a large number of interests in Xiaomi’s latest MIUI ROM shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. This is due to the fact that MIUI 9 has been hyped as coming with a lot of stunning features while shedding off features that are not useful, thus making it lightning fast and smooth. More so, Xiaomi has got an army of loyal users who are always ready to explore the rich array of innovation the tech company has to offer. Mind you, this is for the China ROM only, so we expect the Global ROM to come with a far bigger number of applicants. Xiaomi‘s MIUI 9 will be officially unveiled tomorrow in a ceremony holding in Beijing, China. Ahead of that official unveiling, an official preview of the MIUI 9’s new and latest features have been compiled on the MIUI Forum and as usual, we’ve got it right here for you. So, here’s a summary of what we know so far about Xiaomi’s latest custom ROM.

1. MIUI 9 Themes: Xiaomi’s MIUI is known for it attractive themes and MIUI will be coming with three new themes which are translated from Chinese as No Boundary, Color Fantasy and Cool Black. The three theme will be available along with the default themes. As we have seen earlier, the Dock bar has been redesigned and the dock icons do not have texts below them, giving a neat look to the home screen. It is likely that the text will appear as you hover over the icon.

2. Xiaomi Mi 6, Redmi Note 4 (Qualcomm version), Redmi Note 4X will receive MIUI 9 Beta update first!

Xiaomi had earlier revealed that its latest flagship model Mi 6 will be joined by the Redmi Note 4 and Redmi Note 4X as the first models that would receive MIUI 9 update. This is said to be in order to ensure MIUI 9 offers a great user experience in terms of stability, smoothness, and better battery backup. The second batch is made up of popular Mi devices- Mi 2/2S will receive MIUI 9 update. Other models will follow and the update will be pushed by stages. 3. New Design in Lock Screen Shortcut

The fingerprint sensor is mainstream now, almost every phone launched comes with a fingerprint sensor. For those who own Mi Devices with a front fingerprint sensor, they can’t use long press home button feature to activate torch as it will unlock their phone. Owners of these models with fingerprint sensor can now access it by swiping to the right on your lock screen. There are also other useful shortcuts like Mi Home, Mi Remote, Mi Pay, Transport Card, and Torch could be accessed in one place as well.

4. Split Screen Feature

Split Screen Feature was introduced in Mi Max 2 launched on 25th May 2017. This feature was tested in Mi 5 device MIUI 8 Alpha ROM and made available in MIUI 8 7.7.13 Beta ROM for Mi 6 and Mi Max 2. Now Mi Devices with Android 7.0 and above are confirmed to have split screen feature such as the Mi 6, Mi MIX, Mi Note 2, Mi Max, Mi Max 2, Mi 5, Redmi Note 4X just to name a few. 5. Simplify and Optimized System

As more features are added to MIUI, the ROM size eventually gets bigger and rarely used features are left redundant. Therefore, the MIUI team has decided to simplify and optimize our ROM by removing Child Mode, WiWide (provides public wifi networks to stores and restaurants in China), Contact Card, Showtime (Caller Profile Video) and more.

MIUI 9 will be coming with several other technological breakthroughs which would be unveiled when it is launched.

Recently, a Xiaomi official is credited to have hinted that the company’s next-gen custom ROM MIUI 9 would be released before August 19. A new rumour has now emerged that Xiaomi’s latest Mi 6 flagship will be the first smartphone that would be updated to MIUI 9.

This detail was revealed on MIUI Forum in a group conversation by one of the forum administrators identified as Mushroom bread. You can find the screenshot of the conversation at the end of the post. The admin revealed that MIUI engineers have been working intensively for more than a month so that the MIUI 9 will be released on time. He went further to disclose that the first batch of the custom ROM will only support the Mi 6 and thereafter, other Xiaomi models. He didn’t disclose more than these details but we expect.

MIUI forum administrator didn’t disclose more than these details but we expect the MIUI 9 to be released at the end of this month or early next month. So, if you own the Xiaomi Mi 6, get ready for some exciting times because the MIUI 9 promises some amazing features. According to Xiaomi’s CEO, MIUI  9 will come with a better optimization for a smoother experience and enhanced battery life. Some other features include screen recorder, split screen, and Picture-in-Picture mode. The custom ROM is also expected to be lighter and simpler, according to Xiaomi.

It has been over 8 months now since Xiaomi kick-started the development of its next-gen MIUI intuitive and we’re sure it is almost time the custom ROM is made official. To that end, a Xiaomi official has hinted that the MIUI 9 will be released before August 16 which is a little over a month from now.

There are indications that  the launch is imminent, apart from the fact that it is long due. One of such indication is the rate at which the MIUI 9 features have been coming out. A leaked screen shot said to be he MIUI 9 Interface’s lock screen’s new look appeared online and it was immediately confirmed by Xiaomi via the MIUI Weibo account that the interface is really for the MIUI 9.

Taking a closer look at the screen shot, the interface’s lock scren design will see a slight change from that of the MIUI 8. The screenshot shows the locked screen will have a few app shortcuts to MIJIA app, Universal Remote control app, Mi Pay, Mi Bus card, while at the bottom there is a quick launch button for the flashlight. The apps shortcut may likely be customizable and not necessarily be specifically for the apps shown.

We expect more and more features leak as the launch draws closer. Already, Xiaomi has revealed the next-gen MIUI interface would come with such features as split screen and picture-in-picture with screenshots of the interface showing the features. There is also word that Xiaomi will be yanking off SMS scheduling on the upcoming interface due to a low number of SMS users and also that there won’t be unnecessary apps stuck in your display as it allows users to delete systems apps. More features would definitely be revealed to come on the interface that is tagged to be fluid and more powerful.

In what could be seen as an indication of its imminent release, Xiaomi‘s vice-president in charge of marketing, Huang has shared a couple of screenshots of the MIUI 9. The VP was trying to get feedback from fans about what they think of the new interface. The leaked screenshots are coming barely two weeks after the MIUI Weibo account officially confirmed that MIUI 9 is in development, quoting the words of CEO Lei Jun that the MIUI 9 would be more fluid and powerful. 

Also, we have had words before now that the MIUI 9 will come with such features as split screen and picture-in-picture with screenshots of the interface showing the features. There is also word that Xiaomi will be yanking off SMS scheduling on the upcoming interface due to a low number of SMS users and also that there won’t be unnecessary apps stuck in your display as it allows users to delete systems apps.

The theme in use doesn’t really look spectacular with some comments pointing out that the theme is looking rather plain. Of course, there is the option of changing the team to a more sophisticated look. The Xiaomi VP did not say if this is the icon style because it seems to resemble those of previous versions.

Certainly, it is still a while before we expect Xiaomi to officially release the MIUI 9 because the preview versions have not been seen to have gone through closed and open beta up till now. So, it may still be a while before we’ll see the stable ROM of MIUI 9 rolling out. Xiaomi better hastens up though as Google will soon release Android 8.0 whereas MIUI 9 will be based on Android 7 Nougat.

A few days back Xiaomi’s MIUI official Weibo page released a teaser poster that talked about the MIUI in development and which is thought to refer to the upcoming MIUI 9. That news was captured in the video news summary of an online media outfit and MIUI official in sharing the news broadcast has officially indicated that the MIUI 9 is in development.

 The confirmation was further boosted in the comment section where the MIUI official shared some details about the design of the new interface in response to a question about its design. The MIUI official hinted that the boss, that is Lei Jun says the MIUI 9 will be more stable, more smooth and more powerful

In addition, a purported screenshot of the MIUI 9 was leaked recently showing the background. It shows the WeChat app can be switched between the chat interface and the wallet just the same way you can switch apps. That could be a new feature which will allow a new interface to be opened in a new tab within the same app. The leaked screenshot could also mean MIUI 9 is already in an advanced stage and may soon enter closed beta.

MIUI 9 will be based on Android 7.0 Nougat from the start and another sign it could be coming soon is the observation that apart from the Mi 6 and 15 other models, MIUI 8 developer ROM closed beta and the stable version on all other Xiaomi models have been suspended for a while now.
