Xiaomi is currently testing new iOS-like widgets for MIUI in China. The testing phase will last until October 20. Hence, the new feature will take months to reach the stable channel. Ahead of that, an alleged list of supported devices has emerged.

According to the official announcement for the new MIUI widget system, smartphones running MIUI beta builds based on Android 11 can be used to enroll in the testing program. However, an alleged compatible list only shows a select few premium and upper mid-range smartphones.

Here’s the alleged list of Xiaomi phones that support new MIUI widgets.

Interestingly, the list does not include the older Mi 11 as well as the newly launched Mi MIX 4, Mi Pad 5, and Mi Pad 5 Pro. We believe that these three products should also support new widgets. Anyway, as there’s no proper credible source for this list, we would advise you to consider it with a pinch of salt.

Last but not least, since the feature is expected to officially arrive a couple of months later, there’s a chance that it may debut alongside MIUI 13 although it is enabled via system apps like App Vault and MIUI Gallery, and not the operating system itself.

At the Mi MIX 4 launch event, Xiaomi also unveiled MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition. During the conference, the company said that the new version of MIUI does not bring any features and it only focuses on optimizations. Turns out that the company has silently introduced a new iOS-like widget system.

Xiaomi is testing a new iOS-inspired widget system in China. As per Xiaomiui (1, 2, 3), the new feature is enabled via the latest beta version of App Vault (V5.0.56) and MIUI Gallery (V2.2.21). At present, these versions of the applications can be only installed on devices with MIUI beta build based on Android 11.

This means although the feature appears to be part of MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition, it can be also experienced by users with devices running the regular MIUI 12.5 beta software as well. However, they will have to sign up for the testing program for which the registrations end on August 27.

According to the official announcement, users can now place widgets with sizes 2×2, 4×2, 4×4, and 2×3 on the home screen. A new ‘Widget Store’ has been added through which users can drag and drop widgets of their choice anywhere on the screen. The smartphone maker has also introduced new system app widgets to make use of the new feature.

As per Xiaomi, the new MIUI widget system will be under testing from August 17 to October 20. This suggests that users on the stable MIUI channel, especially in international markets, will have to wait for months to experience the new feature.

On the bright side, it’s good to know that widgets are making a comeback after Apple introduced them in iOS 14. Even Google has revamped the core Android widget system with Android 12.
