The number of digital events is increasing day by day. Today, many brands prefer to announce their new products to the entire world simultaneously in a virtual environment. However, events where all the big tech brands come together still exist. One of the largest of these is the Mobile World Congress (MWC). The show witnesses the launch of many smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other new technologies. So when is MWC 2023 and what can we expect from this event? Here’s everything we know…

When is Mobile World Congress? 

The Mobile World Congress, which begins in the last week of February every year, will continue this tradition in 2023. It is organized by the GSMA and will take place in Barcelona, Spain from Monday, February 27th to Thursday, March 2nd. The media launches will occur on the preceding days, February 25th and 26th, giving us a few days of rapid announcements.

Xiaomi at MWC 2023

Xiaomi is one of the first brands that comes to mind when it comes to technology and will attend MWC 2023, along with many of its competitors. The company, which recently introduced the Xiaomi 13 series, is allegedly going to appear in Barcelona with the Xiaomi 13 Ultra model. This could be a flagship Snapdragon-powered phone with a Leica camera. A date of February 26th has been confirmed by the company’s founder and CEO, Lei Jun. However, companies often announce their products prior to the event, so it’s possible we will see the product being promoted a few days before the event.

Oppo at MWC 2023

Oppo, one of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers, will attend MWC 2023. The biggest surprise from the company is expected to be the Oppo Find X6. There are also rumours of the Oppo Pad 2, as well as the folding Oppo Find N2 Flip so there could be a lot to come. The Find N2 Flip was recently introduced in China and received high praise. Also the company is expected to present various models and technologies to its users.

Samsung at MWC 2023

Samsung introduced new laptop models at last year’s Mobile World Congress 2022. However, Galaxy Unpacked has already given us the Galaxy S23 family and the Galaxy Book 3 Pro series. We’re not sure if there will be any major announcements from Samsung at MWC. In any case, the South Korean tech giant will probably show something in MWC 2023.

Realme at MWC 2023

Realme, which was established to compete with Redmi just a few years ago, is now an important player in the smartphone market. The company announced the international launch of the Realme GT 2 and GT 2 Pro during MWC 2022, but the launch of the Realme GT Neo 5 is expected on February 9th. Therefore, it’s possible that there will either be a simple demonstration or no demonstration at all.

Huawei at MWC 2023

Huawei is facing difficulties in the smartphone market due to the US embargo, but that doesn’t mean the company will stop experimenting and producing cutting-edge products. Huawei is said to have big plans for MWC 2023 and is reportedly planning to have a massive presence at the show. So, what might it launch? We might see the company’s next-gen folding phone, the Huawei Mate X3, which is rumored to have satellite communication functions. There are also rumors of the Huawei P60 and the Huawei Mate 60, but none of these have been confirmed yet.

Nokia at MWC 2023

The legendary Nokia will be one of the companies present at MWC 2023. However, don’t let this presence raise your expectations too much. Unfortunately, the brand is far from the level of influence it once had. Today, it only offers entry-level and updated versions of classic models. This is probably what we will see when we visit the Nokia booth at the event.

Honor at MWC 2023

Honor, which was once associated with Huawei when it comes to MWC, will be appearing as an independent brand this year. The company has big plans for MWC 2023. Honor has confirmed that it will be launching the Honor Magic 5 series and giving the Magic Vs a global launch. Additionally, for the first time, the company will be showcasing some surprise products that we don’t yet know about.

Google at MWC 2023

Google holds an important place in the world of mobile technology, both as the developer of Android and as a producer of its own phones. However, the company promotes its products at an event it organizes, similar to Apple. This event, known as Google I/O, is used to showcase both Android and new products. For this reason, the US technology giant is not expected to have a significant presence at MWC 2023.

OnePlus at MWC 2023

OnePlus, once known as the “flagship killer,” is no longer as competitive when it comes to pricing. However, the company still produces successful smartphones. A few days ago, OnePlus announced the OnePlus 11 and other devices. But the company has promised to showcase a new OnePlus Concept at the event. There are also rumors of a foldable OnePlus model, but we will have to wait until MWC 2023 for any developments.

Motorola at MWC 2023

Another phone manufacturer that lives in the shadow of its past is undoubtedly Motorola. The company, once at the top, now operates under the umbrella of Lenovo. It is known that Lenovo will introduce many new products at MWC 2023. Therefore, Motorola is likely to follow a similar strategy. The Motorola Edge 40 is probably one of them.

Tecno at MWC 2023

Tecno, a relatively new smartphone manufacturer, has become one of the fastest-growing debut brands of 2022 with its regional products and marketing strategies. The company has announced that it will launch its latest flagship model under the Phantom series at MWC 2023. At the Tecno booth, new models from the company’s smartphone series, such as Phantom, Camon, Spark, and Pova, will be presented.

vivo at MWC 2023

Vivo continues to grow in popularity among smartphone manufacturers. Although the company offers products across a range of prices, from low to high, it has established a reputation for its entry-level and mid-range models. Unfortunately, we do not have information on Vivo’s plans for MWC 2023, but we expect an announcement to come soon.

MediaTek at MWC 2023

MediaTek enables nearly 2 billion connected devices a year. The company is the market leader in developing innovative systems-on-chip (SoC) for mobile device, home entertainment, connectivity and IoT products. The company, which is expected to have a technology-focused event, will introduce highly power-efficient mobile technologies, automotive solutions and a broad range of advanced multimedia products such as smartphones, tablets, digital televisions, 5G, Voice Assistant Devices (VAD) and wearables.

Last week, GSMA hosted the MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2022 in Barcelona, Spain. However, unlike previous years, there weren’t many big launches. That’s because companies now prefer to announce their important devices at their own annual conferences.

Anyway, there were some 5 smartphones that caught our attention. We have compiled them in this article. Three of them are from separate brands, while two of them are from the same brand. These OEMs are HONOR, OPPO, realme, and POCO. 

With that being said, let us take a look at these phones one by one.

Best Smartphones at MWC 2022

HONOR Magic4 Pro

Our pick for the star of Mobile World Congress 2022 is none other than HONOR Magic4 Pro. The latest flagship smartphone from HONOR offers almost all the high-end features one can expect.

The device sports a glass sandwich housing with a metal frame. It flaunts a 6.81-inch 10-bit curved OLED LTPO display with a resolution of 1312×2848 pixels, up to 120Hz refresh rate, and a pill-shaped cutout for the front-facing cameras. The panel is not only HDR10+ certified but also IMAX Enhanced.

The phone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset paired with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. It also comes with an independent security chip and an independent display chip for always-on HDR as well as MEMC.

Though the handset houses a large circular module on the rear, there are only three cameras – 50MP wide lens, 50MP ultra-wide lens, and 64MP 3.5x telephoto lens. The remaining two holes are for a flicker sensor and an 8×8 dTOF laser focusing system. On the front, it has a 12MP shooter and a 3D depth sensor.

Other features of the HONOR Magic4 Pro include IP68 certification for dust and water resistance, dual stereo speakers, ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, Magic UI 6 based on Android 12, 4,500mAh battery, 100W fast wired charging, 100W fast wireless charging, and 5W wireless reverse charging.

The device is offered in four colors (cyan, gold, black, orange) and starts at €1099 outside mainland China. Its availability will be revealed closer to the release.

OPPO Find X5 Pro

Unlike the HONOR Magic4 Pro, the OPPO Find X5 Pro was not announced at MWC 2022.  The company unveiled it a few days ago but showcased it at the GSMA-hosted conference.

The successor of OPPO Find X3 Pro retains the design language from its predecessor with some tweaks. The Glaze Black version sports a glass back, while the Ceramic White variant flaunts a ceramic rear panel. Both have a metal frame.

The phone sports a 6.7-inch 10-bit LTPO 2.0 curved AMOLED display with a resolution of 3216 × 1440 pixels, up to 120Hz refresh rate, up to 240Hz touch sampling rate, and 525 PPI. It has a punch-hole at the top left corner and Corning Gorilla Glass protection.

The handset is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip coupled with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. There’s also a self-developed MariSilicon X chipset for image processing. As for software, it boots ColorOS 12.1 based on Android 12.

It arrives with a triple rear camera system powered by Hasselblad. The setup includes a 50MP primary sensor with 5-axis OIS, a 50MP ultra-wide unit,  and a 13MP 2x telephoto snapper. On the front, it has a 32MP shooter for selfies and video calls.

Other features include dual stereo speakers, in-screen fingerprint sensor, 5,000mAh battery, 80W fast wired charging, 50W fast wireless charging, and 10W reverse wireless charging.

The OPPO Find X5 Pro is priced at €1,300 for a sole 12GB+256GB memory configuration in Europe. It will go on sale on March 14

realme GT 2 Pro

The realme GT 2 Pro is the only old handset is the list. It made its debut in China in January. However, it was announced for Europe at MWC 2022. The device is the first proper flagship smartphone from realme.

The phone’s back is made of biopolymer to offer a paper-like touch and feel. Whereas, its frame is made of metal. Despite featuring a different body material, it is powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC as other premium Android smartphones.

The chipset is coupled with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. As far as software is concerned, the handset ships with realme UI 3.0 based on Android 12.

One of the interesting features of the phone is its 6.7-inch display. This 10-bit flat LTPO 2.0 AMOLED panel has a resolution of 3216 x 1440 pixels and up to 120Hz refresh rate, 1000Hz touch sampling rate as well as 1,,400 nits peak brightness. Protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, it has a punch-hole at the top left corner and a fingerprint sensor with support for heart rate monitoring underneath it.

Apart from a great display, the handset also comes with an equally impressive 50MP (Sony IMX766 with OIS) + 50MP (150° ultra-wide) + microscope lens triple camera system on the rear and a 32MP Sony IMX615 front-facing camera. Other features include dual stereo speakers, a 5,000mAh battery, and 65W fast wired charging.

The realme GT2 Pro is priced at €749 and €849 for 8GB + 128GB and 12GB + 256GB memory variants respectively in Europe. It is already up for sale in select regions.

POCO X4 Pro 5G

The next device is our list is POCO X4 Pro 5G, which is a budget offering. Despite being a rebranded Redmi Note 10 Pro 5G, we considered it to be one of the best smartphones at MWC 2022. Because it only looks unique (subjective) but also costs only €269 and €319 for 6GB + 128GB and 8GB + 256GB versions respectively (early bird pricing).

Talking about highlights, it flaunts a glass sandwich design (flat plastic frame) and is built around a 6.67-centered punch-hole FHD+ (2400 x 1080 pixels) AMOLED display with up to 120Hz refresh rate, 395 PPI, and 1,200 nits peak brightness. It is run by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 SoC paired with LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.2 storage.

For photography and videography, there’s a 108MP (wide) + 8MP (ultra-wide) + 2MP (macro) triple rear camera system and a 16MP front-facing camera. Other features include dual stereo speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a hybrid MicroSD card slot, an IR blaster, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and an IP53 rating.

Last but not least, it boots MIUI 13 for POCO based on Android 11 and gets its juice from a 5,000mAh battery, which has support for 67W fast charging.

POCO M4 Pro

The final phone is our list is POCO M4 Pro. It is even more affordable (early bird pricing) than the POCO X4 Pro 5G as it is priced at only €199 (6GB + 128GB) and €249 (8GB + 128GB). It is a rebadged variant of the Redmi Note 11S, which we consider better than the Redmi Note 11 Pro in terms of value.

The handset’s body is entirely made of plastic but still sports a 6.43-inch centered punch-hole AMOLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels (FHD+), 409 PPI, up to 90Hz refresh rate, and 1,000 nits peak brightness level. It is powered by MediaTek Helio G96 SoC coupled with LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.2 storage.

It arrives with a 64MP (wide) + 8MP (ultra-wide) + 2MP (macro) triple rear camera setup and a 16MP front-facing camera. It runs MIUI 13 based on Android 11 and is backed by a 5,000mAh battery with support for 33W fast charging.

Other features include an IP53 rating, dual stereo speakers, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a dedicated MicroSD card slot, and an IR blaster.

Lenovo announced multiple computers at MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2022. Three of them are Chromebooks, namely IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook, IdeaPad Flex 3i Chromebook, and IdeaPad Duet 3 Chromebook. We have already covered the first two convertible laptops. Hence, in this article, we take a look at the latter, which is a detachable tablet.

Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 3 Chromebook Specifications and Features

The newly announced IdeaPad Duet 3 Chromebook by Lenovo is a toned-down version of the IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook from late last year.  The latest model arrives with a smaller LCD screen as opposed to an OLED panel, dual stereo speakers instead of quad, and lower battery life despite sporting the same chipset.

Lenovo says that the IdeaPad Duet 3 Chromebook is the successor of the original IdeaPad Duet Chromebook. It features the iconic dual-tone finish, which is found on almost all Lenovo tablets. It measures only 7.90mm in thickness and comes in two colors, such as Storm Grey and Misty Blue.

Just like its predecessor, the new tablet will also ship with a folio case and a detachable keyboard. In some markets, it will be also bundled with a stylus, while in others customers will have to purchase it separately.

The product flaunts an 11-inch LCD panel with a resolution of 2K pixels and a 5:3 aspect ratio. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 SoC coupled with 4GB/8GB LPDDR4x RAM and 64GB/128GB/256GB eMMC storage.

Unsurprisingly, it boots Chrome OS. But interestingly, it comes pre-loaded with Android Studio for Android app development For the unaware, this is a resource-hungry application and we are not sure how well the ARM-based chip will be able to handle it.

The detachable offers multiple connectivity options like dual-band WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, 2 x USB 3.0 Gen 1 (Type-C), and a pogo pin connector for the official keyboard accessory. Other features include dual stereo speakers, an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP front-facing camera, up to 12-hour battery life, and 45W fast charging.

Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 3 Chromebook Price and Availability

The Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 3 will start at €349 (including VAT) in EMEA. It will be available starting May. We expect the device to reach other markets as well.

Earlier today, Realme announced that it will launch the world’s fastest smartphone charging technology on February 28 at MWC 2022. The new solution from the brand will be unveiled alongside the Realme GT2 Pro for international markets. Ahead of that, we bring to you an exclusive look at the charger that may be using this tech.

 We managed to get an image of a yet-to-release Realme charger. Like previous power adapters from the company, this one also sports a white color paint job.

As the picture shows the plug side of the charger, we can clearly notice the regulatory text printed on the accessory. The first line reveals its model number to be VCK8HACH.

Most importantly, the power ratings say that the charger maxes at 200W output (20V-10A). This suggests that the world’s fastest smartphone charging solution from Realme could max at 200W.

Additionally, the text also confirms support for USB PD (Power Delivery). But it is limited to 45W (15V-3A, 20V-2.25A).

Previously, we expected realme to debut a 150W charging solution as tipped by Digital Chat Station. But it looks like the company will be upping its game even higher.

Unfortunately, this is the only image we have of the charger. At the same time, we could only grasp the aforementioned details from it.

We are not sure how fast Realme’s 200W charging solution will be. Since the brand is claiming ‘world’s fastest’, its tech should take less time than the 8-minute record set by Xiaomi’s 200W charging technology to fill a 4,000mAh battery.

The current fastest charging solution from Realme is based on 125W. However, the company still only uses 65W charging commercially.

We are exactly a week away from Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2022. The trade show will kickstart on February 28. On the very same day, Realme will be holding its press conference to announce its latest flagship smartphone, Realme GT2 Pro, for international markets. Today, the brand has revealed that it will be also unveiling a new charging technology at this event.

In a press release sent to the media, Realme has revealed its plans to launch the ‘world’s fastest smartphone charging technology’ on February 28. Unfortunately, the brand hasn’t shared any details on this tech, except that under the go premium strategy, it will invest 70% of its R&D resources in innovation and charging technology.

Nonetheless, the company does hint that the new tech will be faster than its older 125W charging technology. But to know how fast, we will have to wait for a week.

According to rumors, realme will be debuting a 150W fast smartphone charging technology. Renowned tipster Digital Chat Station says that this tech is a rebadged version of OPPO’s upcoming 160W fast smartphone charging technology but at 10W slower. Despite being slightly slower, it will use the same charger.

We are not sure why Realme is calling its forthcoming 150W smartphone charging technology is ‘world’s fastest’ when Xiaomi had already debuted a 200W charging solution last year, which can fill a 4,000mAh battery in 8 minutes.

Perhaps, Realme’s tech will take less time despite using lower wattage. But then what about OPPO’s original solution, which is rumored to be even faster? Do let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.

OPPO yesterday announced its participation at MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2022 in Barcelona from February 28 to March 3 with the theme of “Shape the Future.” The company will showcase its latest connectivity products, mobile technologies, and achievements in augmented reality and 5G.

Five major exhibition areas will be set up at its booth titled “Brand”, “Flagship”, “Smartphone Technology”, “5G”, and “AR Ecosystem” during the exhibition. The company also says that these will contain several industry-leading mobile phone technologies that will “set new industry records.”

Additionally, OPPO will once again create a virtual playground where users who cannot be present in person will still be able to experience the latest tech from the company. OPPO’s INNO DAY held in December 2021 had a similar setup and people could join the event remotely using customized avatars.

Last but not least, OPPO at MWC 2022 will also be sharing its efforts in environmental protection as a corporate citizen and will delve into finer details concerning its strategy for environmental sustainability. The company in 2021 already managed to reduce 95% of plastic usage for its mobile phone packaging material.

The MWC 2022 event in Barcelona is still scheduled to kick off later this year. This news arrives despite the rising concerns over the Omicron variant of COVID-19, as the number of cases for infections are rising all across the globe.

According to John Hoffman, CEO of the GSM Association (GSMA), the previous Mobile World Congress event will still be held, but with a higher health standard to ensure the safety of those attending. The executive shared the news on MWC’s official website and added that the event will bring in help from health experts, scientists, and the government as well to allow people to “convene safely” to the event this year.

As of right now, the major conference is expected to have more than 1,500 exhibitors arriving from around 150 different nations. For those unaware, the MWC Barcelona event is one of the biggest mobile tech expos, with various brands unveiling their latest innovations in smartphone technology to attendees. In the past, the event has brought in over 100,000 people. But while the event is popular with enthusiasts, it has raised concerns due to the rising cases of Coronavirus infections.

According to the New York Times daily tracker for Spain, the region’s COVID cases on 9th January 2022 was 124,309. Notably, the event is also the second major conference to continue its event with live attendees. Back in 2020, the GSMA had postponed the event and eventually canceled it due to the pandemic. So it remains to be seen if MWC 2022 is eventually cancelled later on. So stay tuned for more updates.

Mobile World Congress popularly known as MWC holds in multiple locations. The most popular of them is MWC Barcelona which held this year in June, but there is also MWC Shanghai and MWC Los Angeles. Now, the GSMA is bringing the event to Africa this year with the first edition set to hold in the capital of Rwanda.

The first edition of MWC Africa will be a virtual event even though the GSMA says it will be held in Kigali, Rwanda. The reason is because of the on-going pandemic, so in-person events are on hold. An in-person event will hold in 2022.

Lenovo MWC Event – June 28

Lenovo also has an event on June 28 and it plans to discuss foldable devices according to the description on the MWC website. Maybe we will hear or even see what Lenovo has planned for this new category of devices. Just like Samsung’s own, this too will be a virtual event

Xiaomi Mi TV 6 – June 28

Xiaomi has no plans to attend MWC but it has scheduled a product launch on the first day of the tech event. The launch is for the Mi TV 6, its latest flagship TV. The smart TV packs some pretty impressive features such as dual 48MP cameras and a 100W in-built speaker.

DIZO and Realme Event – July 1

DIZO and Realme plan to unveil a handful of products on July 1. The former is the first brand under Realme’s TechLife Ecosystem and it plans to announce its very first product on that day but there is a high chance there will be more products. Realme, on the other hand, also has a handful of lifestyle products it has planned for release, some of which have already been listed on its website.

Quite a number of manufacturers have pulled out of a physical attendance of this year’s edition of Mobile World Congress (MWC), and among them is Samsung. While it won’t be holding an in-person event or exhibiting any of its products, there will be a virtual event whose launch date has now been revealed.

The Samsung Galaxy MWC virtual event is scheduled for June 28. The event will be live-streamed on YouTube and on the official MWC website beginning at 7:15 PM CET (22:45 IST/6:15 PM GMT).

According to a translation of the press release on its Korean website, Samsung will introduce “the ever-expanding Galaxy device ecosystem”. It will also unveil its vision for the future of smartwatches.

While there are reports we won’t get a product launch on that day, there is a possibility that Samsung will give us a glimpse of its new products ahead of its Galaxy Unpacked event in August.

Samsung’s product lineup for the second half of the year includes the Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Watch 4, Galaxy Watch Active 4, and the Galaxy Buds 2.

The poster above shows silhouettes of a watch, a phone (the Galaxy S21 Ultra), a tablet, a notebook or foldable, and the Samsung Knox security platform. So we expect its announcements to revolve around these product categories.

South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics officially announced its withdrawal from the 2021 Mobile World Congress (MWC 2021) scheduled to hold in June in Barcelona, Spain. Citing safety concerns for its employees, the company says it will instead focus on a virtual presence for the duration of the event, slated from June 28 to July 1, 2021.

In a statement released to the public, Samsung stated that the health and safety of its employees, partners, and customers is the topmost priority of the company.

The Mobile World Congress is making a return after it was skipped in 2020 due to the pandemic. Some projections say up to 50,000 persons are expected to grace the event this year. However, that may be an over-optimistic assessment of the projected intakes. This year’s MWC has been hit with withdrawals from most industry leaders as companies continue to enforce protocols that would guarantee the safety of their employees.

Stringent restrictions are still in force in Spain, which was heavily hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the parent association (GSMA) got some waivers from Spanish authorities for some exemptions for participants of MWC 2021. The program organizers also require attendees to show a negative test result before entry into Spain. In addition, new tests are conducted once every three days.

Samsung will focus on showcasing its product virtually during MWC 2021. The company hopes to leverage the MWC platform to introduce its array of cutting-edge and innovative products to the global audience virtually.

Lenovo has also reportedly disclosed that it won’t be attending the tech show in person. The Verge quotes a Lenovo spokesperson to have hinted that the company will attend virtually instead of in person. The company also indicated that it had informed the GSM Association, which organizes the event, about its plans.

Samsung and Lenovo have now joined Google, Ericsson, Sony, and Nokia, who had all ruled out a physical presence in the Barcelona conference.

The GSMA, the organizers behind the world’s biggest mobile tech show, Mobile World Congress (MWC), announced earlier this year that it plans to make this year’s edition of MWC Barcelona an in-person event. Following its announcement, some exhibitors and partners have disclosed that they will not be attending the event which will begin on June 28. That list has now grown to include Google.

The tech giant put out a statement that it will not be attending this year’s edition of MWC due to its current COVID-19 travel restrictions and protocols. The official statement says that it (Google) will continue to work together with the GSMA and support its partners through virtual opportunities. Google added that it will attend the 2022 edition of the event.

Google’s announcement comes weeks after Sony Mobile and Oracle, and telecom giants – Nokia and Ericsson, announced that they will not be attending MWC Barcelona 2021. We won’t be surprised if more exhibitors pull out as the event draws closer.

It appears the organizers’ measures for the event are not satisfactory enough for exhibitors, so they would rather not take the risk. The GSMA’s measures include reducing the number of attendees from 100,000 to 50,000, requiring a negative COVID-19 test result from attendees that was done 72 hours before their arrival, touchless registration process, mandatory masks, and regular disinfection of stands, product samples, and audio-visual equipment.

MWC Barcelona 2021 is scheduled to hold between June 28 and July 1.

Last year, the Mobile World Congress was canceled due to concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic and it appears that the tech conference will face similar issues this time as well with brands pulling out of the event.

Ericsson, one of the leading telecom equipment makers, has confirmed pulling out of the MWC 2021 and that move seems to have encouraged others to follow the suit. Now, Nokia has also confirmed not attending this year’s Mobile World Congress, becoming the second major telecom vendor to do so.

In a statement related to this development, the company said that “after careful consideration, Nokia has decided not to have a physical presence at Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2021. The health of our employees, customers and partners is of paramount importance to us. Given the international nature of the event and with the global vaccine rollout still in its early phases, we have made the considered decision to instead participate in only the virtual event.”

Apart from Ericsson and Nokia, other companies like Sony Mobile and Oracle have confirmed they won’t be present at the Mobile World Congress physically. The reasoning remains the same — they don’t want to put their employees and visitors at risk.

Last year, after many companies pulled out of the Mobile World Congress, GSMA officially cancelled the event. This time, there has not been any such communication so far and it’s unlikely that the MWC will get cancelled.

Recently, GSMA organized the Mobile World Congress in Shanghai in late February, which was an in-person event with several virtual panels and addresses. As per the estimates, around 17,000 people attended the event, without any positive COVID-19 diagnoses.

Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona is known to take place in the first quarter of the year, but that changes next year as the GSMA has announced new dates for its events.

The new dates announced by the GSMA in a press release informed us that MWC Shanghai, which used to take place in June, will now hold in February, while MWC Barcelona moves to June. The Barcelona event was originally scheduled for the first week of March 2021. Below are the exact dates for the events in 2021:

• MWC Shanghai: February 23 – February 25
• MWC Barcelona: June 28 – July 1

*MWC Los Angeles remains unchanged with this year’s edition set to take place between October 28 to October 30.

The GSMA says the decision to move the Barcelona event to June is so as to deal with external circumstances related to COVID-19. The decision was also taken after planning and consultation with all key stakeholders. The Director-General of the GSMA, Mats Granryd, has said that “the health and safety of exhibitors, attendees, staff and the people of Barcelona are of paramount importance”.

MWC Barcelona is one of the biggest tech events in the world. The tech show is a platform for exhibitors to show off new technologies. A lot of phone manufacturers also use the platform to announce new products. It remains to be seen if these products will still be unveiled in the first quarter of the year at individual events or if they will be delayed so that they can be announced at MWC Barcelona.

The organizers behind the MWC 2020 (Mobile World Congress) in Barcelona have come forward offering refunds or discounts to future events to the thousands of expected attendees and companies that had previously paid for the conference before its eventual cancelation.

For those unaware, the MWC is the world’s largest mobile technology conference. It brings big names from the industry to showcase their innovation or advancements and attract crowds in the thousands. Unfortunately, the event was canceled earlier this year due to fears of the Coronavirus outbreak. Look back at it now, the move was probably a smart decision to protect its organizers and attendees. However, the conference doesn’t operate for profit and had trouble issuing refunds, especially to OEMs that paid hefty sums for spots on the event.

This also marked the first time in 33 years that the event has to ever be scrapped. Many smartphone brands lost a major stage for their respective launch events and technological showcases. Similarly, tens of millions of dollars were also spent on the exhibition which had more or less been wasted, since advertising expenditure cannot be returned. Previously, it was reported that discounts were unlikely to be given out because of the losses incurred, but now it seems that fundings have been rerouted.

According to a statement from the organizer, GSMA will be offering a full refund on the ticket costs for the attendees. In other words, a 799 EUR ($865) basic admission pass will be sent to the many customers. For the large OEMs, however, the GSMA plans on incentivizing discounts on attending the event in future years as an alternative to refunding large sums outright. A few of the major brands have already expressed their desires to share the stage again next year, so the strategy might be effective for the trade body.

Big names can now receive a credit worth 125% of what they had initially invested in for the MWC 2020 in Barcelona. This sum can be be used to gain a 65% discount for next year and 35% and 25% in the subsequent years respectively. Additionally, GSMA has also offered a separate plan that will allow immediate refund claims for up to 50% of original spending, but only up to $178,000. Needless to say, its a strategy to actively include participation in next year’s event.

After a series of companies announced their withdrawal from MWC 2020 this week, GSM Association, the organizers of the event has decided to cancel the tech event this year. MWC is the world’s biggest mobile tech show of the year and its cancelation is a strong indication of the gravity of the ongoing coronavirus epidemic.

This announcement doesn’t really come as a surprise given how major tech giants like LG, MediaTek, Vivo, AT&T, Sony, and Amazon backed out of the event in the past few days. All these companies expressed their concern for the safety of their employees as well as the attendees of the event this year.

Xiaomi, Realme, and Huawei had recently confirmed their attendance at the event. Xiaomi and Realme also announced pre-MWC launch events for their devices. But with the event officially canceled, we’ll have to wait for an official statement from these companies regarding their pre-MWC events.

In an emailed statement to Bloomberg, John Hoffman, the CEO of GSMA, said the outbreak made it “impossible” to hold MWC 2020.

Over 1100 people have died in China after contracting the covid-19 aka novel coronavirus and over 40,000 people have been infected so far. These numbers are rising every day. WHO has already declared coronavirus as a global health emergency. The world’s biggest mobile trade show — Mobile World Congress, is scheduled to kick-off from 25th February in Barcelona, Spain. With the event nearing, mobile brands have now started sending out event invitations.

Today, China-based Oppo has sent out media invites for its ‘Get Closer’ launch event at MWC 2019 which is scheduled on 23rd February at 21:00 Beijing time. At this year’s Mobile World Congress, the company says that it will be exploring the theme of Connectivity, AI, Industry 4.0, Immersive Content, Disruptive Innovation, Digital Wellness, Digital Trust, and The Future.

The media invites sent by Oppo are uniquely designed and folded, which is being speculated as a hint by the company that it could unveil its foldable smartphone. Also, the ‘Get Closer’ event name also hints that Oppo could bring a new product with 10x optical zoom technology at MWC 2019.

A few months ago, Oppo’s Product Manager Chuck Wang confirmed that the company will be using the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 platform to announce its first foldable smartphone but didn’t share information on its specifications and release date.

Currently, there’s no confirmation on whether the foldable phone from Oppo will be equipped with a fold-in design like Samsung’s foldable phone or fold-out design like Huawei’s foldable phone. A report that had surfaced coupled of months ago had suggested that Samsung may allow Oppo and Xiaomi to use its Infinity Flex Display.

As for the Oppo’s 10x lossless zoom technology first surfaced last month in a patent. The technology, which was announced last week, uses three cameras instead of two. It has added an ultra-wide camera to the main camera + telephoto lens dual camera setup of the 5x precision optical zoom. The ultra-wide angle camera sits atop the ultra-clear main camera while the telephoto lens maintains its periscope-like setup. The new design provides a zoom range of 15.9mm to 159mm.

Samsung is all set to announce the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ flagships in the next few hours. While traditionally, we have to wait for the big unveil of the flagship to see a 3 minute long promo video of the device, this time around, it looks like /leaks managed to find the launch video a few hours early.

The video looks like the real deal and reveals a few details about the upcoming S9 and S9+ models. First of all, it confirms that the new Galaxy S9 models will look just like the Galaxy S8, with a few minor changes like the location of the fingerprint sensor at the back. As expected, it is now placed at a much more natural position, making it easier to access in everyday use. But the overall design of the new flagship remains the same as the S8, which to be honest, isn’t really a bad thing, considering how we all love Galaxy S8’s refined design.

The video also confirms a few of the features of the new device.  We will get a live translation feature on the phone, wherein you just have to point the camera at a text and it’ll translate into your language. Then there are a few AI features as well along with waterproofing. Then there’s Samsung’s DeX dock support which instantly transforms your Android into a desktop. It’s a pretty cool tech for presentations.

Finally, the video talks about the new Galaxy S9 Enterprise Edition. This will be a special edition made for business employees and it will come with add on features like extended guaranty, security updates for up to four years, E-FOTA (Firmware over the Air) among other things.

But these were just a few of the features of the Galaxy S9 smartphone. We already know a lot about the phone, thanks to all the leaks and renders that have surfaced in the past couple of months. So, now, it’s just a matter of few hours until we get the pricing and availability details.

One of the biggest tech events of the year, the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2017) will kick off in the next few days. The event starts on February 27 and goes on till 2nd March in Barcelona, Spain. Most of the top smartphone manufacturers will be present at the event, and we expect a lot of new products to be announced especially flagship smartphones. LG and Huawei have already confirmed that their flagship smartphones for 2017, the LG G6 and the Huawei P10 / P10 Plus respectively will be announced at the event. But we expect a lot more companies to participate in the release of new smartphones and down below, we take a look at what to expect from the top tech companies at the event.

Xiaomi:

For the first time, Xiaomi was present at MWC in 2016. We expected the company to do the same this year, but recently, Xiaomi revealed that they won’t be attending the event. Quite disappointing, as we would have loved to see the new Xiaomi Mi 6 being announced at the big event.

But there’s some consolation. Although the company is not attending the big event, it will release its first ever processor, code named Pinecone, on February 27 in China. That’s the same time as other companies are planning to announce their big products at MWC. Further, we would most likely see the first Pinecone processor powered smartphone, Xiaomi Mi 5C on the same day.

For the past few months, LeEco has been particularly quiet about its new releases. Either it’s because of the recent financial issues that made the news or because it’s preparing to launch something big, whatever the reason, we’ll know for sure in the coming months. The company hasn’t officially confirmed that they will be participating at MWC 2017 but there were rumors that LeEco X10 smartphone could be announced at the big event. Now, it seems unlikely because we haven’t heard anything from the company yet.

Lenovo Motorola:

By now, it’s clear that Motorola will announce at least two new smartphones at the event, the Moto G5 and the Moto G5 Plus. Huawei:

Huawei has confirmed that it will take the wraps off two new flagship smartphones, the Huawei P10 and the Huawei P10 Plus. The new series will succeed the company’s first Lecia certified Huawei P9 models that were released with much fanfare last year. So, expect some powerful specs, especially in the camera department on the new Huawei P10 models.

Along with the new smartphones, the Huawei Watch 2 will also be unveiled at MWC 2017. The first gen. Huawei Watch is often considered one of the best looking Android smartwatches in the market and the new generation model will have to make sure that it takes things to a level higher.

Asus:

Asus isn’t expected to release a new smartphone at MWC 2017, at least not a flagship one. But we are most likely going to see the recently leaked Zenfone 3 Go entry level handset at the event. The specs aren’t exciting, and if you are an Asus fan waiting for the next generation Zenfone 4, you’ll most likely have to wait a couple of months more, until May.

Nokia:

Nokia is back, and we already saw its first smartphone, the Nokia 6, which has received a pretty good response in China so far. But the fact that the phone is limited to China doesn’t seem fair for Nokia fans all around the world, and for them, we will most likely see at least two new smartphones from the company at MWC 2017, the Nokia 3 and the Nokia 5. Note that the model names are lower than that of Nokia 6, which likely suggests that the two models are going to be entry level devices, so nothing too exciting. Also, according to Evan Blass, Nokia could also revive the legendary Nokia 3310 feature phone at the event.

So, MWC this year is definitely something to watch out for Nokia fans.

Oppo:

Initially, we thought Oppo was going to let MWC pass this year without any significant announcements. But the company recently revealed that it did have something in store for smartphone enthusiasts, a 5X zoom smartphone. Now, before you get too excited, it’s probably going to be a prototype model showcasing the company’s new zoom technology. We are not sure whether we’ll meet a new smartphone featuring this tech as early as MWC. Let’s wait and watch.

ZTE:

ZTE rose to fame with its Axon series smartphones in the past few years, but at MWC 2017, we won’t be seeing any new Axon models. It will apparently make things like 360 VR, 4K videos and instant cloud storage on the go possible. Another interesting product that we may find at the event could be the ZTE Quartz watch,. It has already passed Bluetooth SIG certification and will run Android Wear 2.0 platform that was just recently announced.

Nubia:

Nubia also seems to be eager to showcase its new smartphone at MWC 2017. The company has confirmed that it will announce a new device, but we are not sure, which model it will be or what features can we expect. The teaser just says, “To Meet New Possibilities”, which could be hinting at improvements in the camera department. Nubia phones are popular for its design and camera tech, so something new in these departments can be expected at the event. Note that the phone will be announced on February 26, a day before the MWC officially starts, but the company will most likely showcase its new device at its booth during the event.

Gionee:

Gionee seems to be readying two devices for showcasing at MWC 2017, namely the Gionee A1 and A1 Plus. Recently, we came across more details about the Gionee A1, and the leak reveals that it will be a mid-range device. The specs are decent and the highlight will be the 16MP selfie snapper up front.

Coming to the non-Chinese mainstream companies, Samsung has confirmed that it won’t release the Galaxy S8 at the event. But we’ll probably get to see a new teaser at the event. Also, we do expect to see the recently leaked Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 at MWC 2017. Some mid-range phones may also be released at the event, but we don’t have any details about the same.

Officially, we don’t have much details about what to expect from Sony at MWC 2017. However, thanks to the recent leaks and rumors, it’s likely that we’ll see the Sony Yoshino models at the event. HTC:

HTC outrightly said that they won’t release a Snapdragon 835 smartphone at MWC 2017. But that doesn’t mean we won’t get any interesting devices at the event, as there could be upper mid-range models like the recently rumored HTC X10. Also, we could see some VR-centric products since HTC seems to be doing pretty well in this department.

Blackberry:

Ah, Blackberry, the company that’s surprisingly still in the smartphone business. The company has confirmed that it will be present at MWC 2017 and we expect Blackberry Mercury with a physical keyboard to be officially unveiled at the event. We have been hearing the name Mercury (and even seeing in hands-on pictures)  since the past few weeks and hopefully, we will get full details about the phone in the next few days.

Not every company attends the major tech events that holds during the year. Some usually have their own separate events where they launch their latest products. And others don’t attend because there is nothing to showcase. Xiaomi seems to belong to the latter as a spokesman has revealed that it will not be attending this year’s MWC in Barcelona.

The decision not to attend comes as a surprise to all as Xiaomi usually announces its flagship for the year at the event. So if it is not attending due to not having any new product, that means the Mi 6 isn’t ready. And the only plausible cause might be the supply issues plaguing the Snapdragon 835 processor.

Some folks might think the company is also not attending the event due to the departure of Hugo Barra but the reason above seems like a more genuine one. Xiaomi still has plans to attend other events outside of China and was at this year’s edition of CES where it launched a new router and TV.

Xiaomi is also taking things a bit slow this year. CEO Lei Jun had said that the company grew too fast and will be entering a transitional period. In a IHS report for shipments recorded last year, Xiaomi recorded just 58 million units to sit at the fourth position; a far cry from Huawei’s 139 million units and OPPO and Vivo’s 95 and 82 million units respectively.

Nokia’s official Twitter account just tweeted that the company’s CEO and President, Rajeev Suri, will deliver a keynote address at next year’s Mobile World Congress.

The announcement has left people wondering if the former mobile giant will be launching a phone at the electronics trade fair holding in Barcelona, seeing as Nokia’s deal with Microsoft that prevents phones bearing the Nokia name from being released ends this year.

This news continues the chain of events leading to what people are saying is the company’s return. We already have the Nokia D1C which was first seen on GeektBench before showing up on Antutu afterwards.

While the event is still months away (February 27 – March 2, 2017), we are sure more details about a phone launching then will be released before then.

The GSMA has already updated its website to reflect the name of the CEO as one of the speakers. Other CEOs on the list includes that of Niantic, makers of popular augmented reality game, Pokémon Go; CEO of Kaspersky; CEO of Telefonica; CEO of AT&T; CEO of KT Corporation; and the CEO of Vivendi Group.

This is actually not that surprising given that some of the specs mentioned in those slides were too good to be true. For example, the Xiaomi Mi 5 was said to feature a massive 26MP camera with f/1.6 aperture and OIS.

But if you are thinking that all of those information was fake, analyst Pan Jiutang says otherwise. He revealed via his weibo account yesterday that some of the information mentioned in those slides were true. So, things like dual SIM card slots, NFC, a separate MicroSD card slot (not a hybrid one) and two Mi 5 variants could turn out to be true. Unfortunately, the analyst didn’t point out exactly which features were going to end up in the device, but there were a few believable slides in the leak, which we think could be right.

The slides said that the Xiaomi Mi 5 will come with Snapdragon 820 chip, with 3GB RAM + 32GB storage / 4GB RAM + 64GB storage variants. Both models had MicroSD expansion and there was a decent 2910mAh battery on board. The screen was supposed to be of 5.2-inches with FHD 1080p resolution. As for software, the phone is said to run on Android 6.0 with MIUI on top.

As you can see, except for the camera, most of the other details from the PPT are believable. At the back, we will probably find a modest 16MP camera with OIS. You can check out all the details leaked by yesterday’s leak from here.

Nokia has announced that it will be present at MWC 2016 to be held in Barcelona from February 22 to February 25. However, if you were hoping to see some new Android smartphones from the company at the event, you will most likely be disappointed.

Nokia has a handful of projects under development and some of them would be showcased at the upcoming tech event in Barcelona. Ever since the sale of its smartphone business to Microsoft, Nokia has shifted its focus on network infrastructure. So, we can expect new tech in this field by the company.

Nokia recently announced a new security product in the market, called Netguard Security Management Software. The company confirms that this new product will be showcased at MWC this year.

Netguard is a software designed to monitor and control all the security components of a network. So, instead of securing just individual devices, the software secures the network as a whole. It monitors all IoT devices in the network for malware and other attacks and secures the entire system. The company also adds that it is ready to sell the product to any brand of networks.

Another interesting tech from Nokia to be shown off at MWC will be the LTE Advanced Pro. The new network promises a significant increase in transfer speeds, using the existing network infrastructure. The LTE-A Pro will use special algorithms to speed up uploads at twice the existing rate and downloads at thrice the rate. This could be an important tech as it enables existing network carriers to squeeze more out of their existing infrastructure. So, no need to install costly new age components for increased speeds, at least, not at the moment.

As for smartphones, we may see Nokia branded phones sometime later this year. We have seen some renders of a possible Nokia smartphone, but they are not yet confirmed. In fact, the eventual return of the company to smartphone business is still a debated topic.
