Tesla has got the European certificate to install it’s latest and upgraded FSD Hardware 4.0 also known as HW4. The certificate issued by the Dutch vehicle authority RDW, dated January 20, 2023, allows the company to install the new hardware in Model S and X vehicles.

The FSD 4.0 comes with some major changes and upgrades which will make Tesla cars the most technologically advanced vehicles in the world. 

Though the details of the new system are not revealed, experts are speculating that the upgrades may include a generation 4 complex vehicle control system (Autopilot), a new computer that is going to be 4 times more powerful than the one available in FSD 3 and a new GNSS antenna for navigation. 

Other upgrades include changes to Automatic Dipped and Main Beam Sensor, unification of Model X brake system application, new stay arm for Model X interior rear-view mirror, update to manufacturer’s engine code, update to vehicle’s rear badging, an increased speed limit of 174 MPH (280 km/h), new 5MP autopilot cameras and more.

Tesla is also planning to roll out the Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit which can boost the vehicle speed to 200 MPH (322 km/h).

The details of the new hardware have been speculated based on the changes that the automaker applies for with the regulators. 

In a recent interview, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the company would not offer retrofits for older models. He justified this decision by stating that the cost and difficulty of retrofitting hardware 3 with hardware 4 are quite significant. So it would not be economically feasible to do so.

It makes sense that the company is not offering the upgrade to older models. It would put huge pressure on the company both financially and physically to upgrade the existing fleet of millions of cars. Moreover, as FSD 4.0 comes with a brand new computer, it may be difficult to fit the same with the old models. 

Tesla has not revealed the exact timeline for rolling out the new hardware. However, now that the company has got European approval, we can expect the launch of the new system any day now.

Last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the first deliveries of its Model S Plaid at a pricey $130,000. The Model S Plaid is a high-end, super-quick version of Tesla’s original electric sedan, the Model S, and received applause from the market with a few hundred already delivered by the leading electric vehicle maker, Tesla.

There has been a fire incident involving the Model S Plaid in Pennsylvania, as the vehicle was reported to have caught fire spontaneously while on a Pennsylvania highway. According to the report, firefighters raced from two separate fire departments and successfully put out the fire. In the wake of several battery fires involving Tesla vehicles, first responders like firefighters have gotten some training on dealing with such fires. The firefighters in the Pennsylvania fire incident inserted a five-inch hose inside the vehicle. They kept a constant and rapid supply of water which contributed to the full extinguishment of the fire.

No injuries were reported in the fire incident, as the driver, who was believed to be the vehicle’s lone occupant, managed to escape the conflagration. However, it seems that the unnamed driver of the Model S Plaid may be seeking some relief from Tesla, as his legal representative has weighed in on the matter. The victim’s lawyer says that Tesla has ignored his client while also calling for a suspension of the sales of the Model S Plaid until a full investigation of the incident is completed.

Several fire incidents concerning Tesla’s electric vehicles have been recorded over the years. On its part, Tesla has continued to improve on the quality of its EVs, with greater attention to safety issues relating to the batteries of these vehicles. Tesla also insists that its vehicles are among the safest in the industry, far lower than the corresponding figures for various electric and internal combustion models. Tesla continues to reflect a willingness to push the frontiers of existing technology to produce industry-defining electric vehicles.
