Design

One of the weakest points of Android Go devices is definitely their design, which usually looks ugly and outdated. Xiaomi Redmi Go, Samsung Galaxy J2 Core and Moto E5 Play come with very thick bezels, but at least they are compact and lightweight compared to midrange and flagship phones. I would personally pick the Motorola Moto E5 Play because it offers a better build quality. Indeed, its body is splash resistant, a very hard feature to find on entry-level phones. Further, it is the only with a fingerprint reader. With its Gorilla Glass display, Samsung Galaxy J2 Core has a resistant front side. Xiaomi Redmi Go does not provide any protection.

Display

With this below-average resolution (not even HD) Samsung Galaxy J2 Core disappoints when it comes to the display quality, guaranteeing an insufficient level of detail compared to modern smartphones. Xiaomi Redmi Go has a cool HD display, but I prefer the Moto E5 Play as its HD screen is bigger, with a diagonal of 5.2 inches. However, if you like compact devices that you can easily use with one hand and keep in your pocket comfortably, then Xiaomi Redmi Go may be a better choice for you. Due to modern apps and their advanced features, I personally prefer a bigger display than just 5 inches.

Specs and software

Xiaomi Redmi Go and Samsung Galaxy J2 Core both come with just 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage, but it is not a huge problem given that Android Go can run smoothly even on devices with just 512 MB of RAM, and it needs less space in the internal storage. However, Motorola Moto E5 Play comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage, that is an excellent configuration for a device equipped with Android Go. It is better for multi-tasking and for people who install a lot of apps on their device. The processor is the Snapdragon 425, just like the Redmi Go, while Samsung Galaxy J2 Core has a quad-core Exynos chipset which guarantees more or less the same performance.

Camera

The camera I liked more is the one of the Moto E5 Play. Its bright aperture guarantees sufficient shots when it is not so dark, and it can record videos with resolutions up to 1080p. Further, it is the only to have a front camera equipped with a front-facing LED flash, so it can take decent selfies even in the dark. The second place goes to Samsung Galaxy J2 Core with a decently-optimized rear camera that remains sufficient for emergency shots. Xiaomi Redmi Go is not disappointing given its price, but it is all but a camera-focused device.

Battery

With its bigger 3000 mAh battery, Xiaomi Redmi Go should be able to last a bit more than both its rivals. But we still did not test it, so we can not tell it for sure. Samsung always used to optimize the battery on its affordable devices very well, so the Galaxy J2 Core may effectively be at the same level. Also, consider that the J2 Core has a more efficient display due to its lower resolution.

Price

Xiaomi Redmi Go just debuted in the Philipines with a very affordable €60/$70 price tag, Motorola Moto E5 Play (the winner of this comparison) is priced about €80/$90 and Samsung Galaxy J2 Core carries a €100/$115 price tag. Which one would you pick?

Thanks to an enlightened version of Google’s operating system, they can provide a good level of performance even though they have outdated hardware or components which would be obsolete with a normal version of Android. Today, Samsung launched its second Android Go phone: the Galaxy J4 Core. In this article, we compared it with two other interesting Android Go devices: Nokia 2.1 and Motorola Moto E5 Play.

Design

You can not expect the best look from a phone that costs less than $150, and indeed, all of these devices feature a not exciting polycarbonate design. The most beautiful is the Samsung Galaxy J4 Core as it boasts thinner bezels and a higher screen-to-body ratio. Further, it is also way thinner than its opponents. On the other hand, Moto E5 Play is more interesting in terms of build quality as it is splash resistant.

Display

Samsung Galaxy J4 Core and Nokia 2.1 have the most interesting displays. They are very wide (6 inches 18:9 vs 5.5 inches 16:9) and they feature an HD resolution. The best phone for multimedia use is Nokia 2.1 because it has more powerful stereo speakers.

Specs

With its 2 GB of RAM making the difference, Moto E5 Play is the phone with the best hardware department. It can provide better performances, especially in multitasking. Further, it exists in a variant with the Snapdragon 427 SoC which is even better than Snapdragon 425. Nokia 2.1 has the worst hardware side with just 8 GB of internal storage, but it is the only one to have a micro SD dedicated slot which matters if you are planning to use the dual SIM functionality.

Camera

Motorola Moto E5 Play is the one I prefer even when it comes to cameras. Indeed, it has a rear camera with a brighter aperture than its opponents: f/2.0. You will still get disappointing photos if we compare this device with actual mid-rangers, but with its bright aperture and a nice pixel size, the final result is slightly better.

Battery

Nokia 2.1 has the biggest battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh which is huge for an entry-level device. Indeed, it can last two full days even with a very stressed use, thanks to both the capacity and the very efficient components. Samsung Galaxy J4 Core takes the second place with its 3300 mAh unit which is all but disappointing for the same reasons.

Price

You can get these devices for a very affordable price thanks to Android Go. Nokia 2.1 costs about €100/$113, Moto E5 Play carries a price tag of about €80/$90, while the price tag of Samsung Galaxy J4 Core is not known yet. I would personally pick Nokia 2.1 because of its bigger battery and stereo speakers.

It has now announced a third – the Moto E5 Play Android Go Edition.

The Moto E5 Play Android Go Edition isn’t just the E5 Play with Android Go, it is actually quite different in terms of specs. Unlike the original which has a 5.2-inch HD display, the Android Go Edition has a 5.3-inch 18:9 MaxVision display.

Motorola doesn’t specify the processor, RAM, and storage in the Moto E5 Play Android Go Edition. However, it does keep the 8MP rear camera and 5MP front-facing camera with a LED flash from the regular variant. Battery capacity is also not stated but it still has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The phone runs Android Oreo Go Edition, so it comes with Android Go Google apps instead of the full ones which means more available space out of the box. Motorola also says there are fewer pre-installed apps. Motorola doesn’t say but we do not think it comes with Moto Actions.

The Moto E5 Play Android Go Edition will be available for €109 (~$128) in Europe and Latin America later this month.

The Moto E5 series includes the Moto E5 Plus which is the leader of the pack and the Moto E5 and Moto E5 Play.

The Moto E5 Plus is the biggest of all three. It sports a 6” display with a 1440 x 720 resolution and has polymer glass on the rear. It has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. A Snapdragon 435 processor is the chipset of choice.

Although the Moto E5 Plus looks like it has dual rear cameras, it only has one. It is a 12MP f/2.0 (1.25um) sensor. The hole beside it is home to a laser focus module. It also has an 8MP front-facing camera with a dedicated LED flash.

Other than the large display, another selling point of the Moto E5 plus is its massive 5,000mAh battery. It runs Android 8.0 Oreo.

The Moto E5 is smaller at 5.7” but has the same HD+ resolution. It is powered by a Snapdragon 425 SoC paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage.

It has a 13MP f/2.0 sensor with a 1.12um pixel size as its main camera and a 5MP sensor as the front-facing camera. There is also a front LED flash.

The Moto E5 comes with a 4,000mAh battery which should be sufficient for more than a day.

The last is the Moto E5 Play. Just like the Moto E5, the rear is covered in polycarbonate. However, it is removable for access to the battery.

The display is 5.2” HD display and it comes with a Snapdragon 425/Snapdragon 427 depending on the market. RAM is 2GB and built-in storage is 16GB with support for expansion.

There is an 8MP f/2.0 sensor on the rear and a 5MP camera with flash sits above the display. It also has a fingerprint scanner buried under the Moto logo on the rear like its siblings.

Compared to the rest, the battery is small at 2,800mAh. It comes with a 10W charger and runs Android 8.0 Oreo.

It is speculated that the company may announce the Moto G6 series through the upcoming launch event.

The launch invitation only states that the unveil event will begin at 10 AM on April 19 and it does not contain any information on the devices that will be announced on the said date. The background image of the Motorola’s launch invite resembles with the wallpaper seen in the leaked renders of the Moto G6. This indicates that Motorola may announce the Moto G6 series on April 19.

Through a recent press release that was outed at the end of March, Lenovo had confirmed that Sergio Buniac is the new Lenovo Mobile Business Group co-president and Motorola chairman and president. The same press release also confirmed that the company would be announcing its first phones for 2018 in April. At that time, it was speculated that the company may announce the Moto G6 series and Moto E5 series.

The rumor mill has already revealed the entire specs and features of the Moto G6 series and Moto E5 series. Last year, Motorola had skipped the Play variant for Moto G series, but recent reports have revealed that the Moto G6 series will include Moto G6 Play, Moto G6 and Moto G6 Plus. Also, the Moto E5 series is speculated to include Moto E5 Play, Moto E5 and Moto E5 Plus.

It has been officially announced that Sergio Buniac will be taking over as the new Chairman and President. The company also confirmed that its first phones will be unveiled next month.

Buniac has been working with Motorola for 22 years and he was recently appointed as the Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Latin America wing. The recent years have been quite challenging for the company. In 2012, Google had acquired Motorola’s consumer phone business and two years later it was taken over by Lenovo.

Earlier in this month, Motorola had reportedly laid off a large number of employees from its Chicago. Motorola had reportedly invested $200 million in the advertising of the Moto Z2 Force. However, a report from November last year had claimed that a dismal number of 145,000 units of the Z2 Force were sold by the top four carriers in the U.S. The Motorola handsets have received lukewarm response in China. Hence, the company has reportedly resurrected the Lenovo smartphone brand by introducing the newly announced Lenovo S5 smartphone.

The press release that confirms Buniac as the new president also reveals that the company will be launching its new products in the coming month. Recent reports have revealed plenty of information about the Moto E5, E5 Plus and E5 Play that includes and the Moto G6 Series that comprises of Moto G6, G6 Plus and G6 Play.

The Moto E5 and G6 series have been recently certified in Indonesia. The Moto G6 has been spotted at China’s TENAA authority. whereas the Moto G6 Plus has been spotted at Taiwan’s NCC regulatory body. Since the company has confirmed it will be launching its “first products” in April, it is likely that the company may unveil the Moto E5 and Moto G6 series in the same month.

Leaks have revealed that the Moto E5 series will comprise of Moto E5 Play, Moto E5 and Moto E5 Plus. A tipster named Andrim Yatim has been consistently leaking information on the upcoming Motorola phones. According to the tipster, the Moto E5 Play would be replacing the Moto C series this year and it would be coming with basic specs and large-sized battery. Earlier this week, he had also revealed the key specs of Moto E5 Play, Moto E5 and Moto E5 Plus.

Moto E5 Play

Yatim claims that Moto E5 Play will be coming with a 5.2-inch display that will support a traditional aspect ratio of 16:9 and it will produce an HD resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. Its back panel will be housing a 12-megapixel snapper whereas the frontside will be equipped with a 5-megapixel camera. It will be receiving power from 4,000mAh capacity battery.

Motorola has never launched a Play edition for its Moto E series. However, it is arriving for the first time this year. The above renders shared by Evan Blass suggest that it would be coming with a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. It is likely to embedded under the Moto batwing logo present on the rear panel. It also seems to feature a front mounted LED flash for selfie camera. According to Blass, the E5 Play smartphone will be available through Verizon in the U.S. and it will be releasing with E5 Play Cruise moniker through Cricket Wireless.

Moto E5

The Moto E5 will be also featuring a 16:9 aspect ratio display. However, it will have a slightly bigger display of 5.5 inches. It will carry support for HD resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. A 16-megapixel snapper will be available on its back panel whereas the frontside will be fitted with an 8-megapixel selfie camera. It will feature 3,028mAh battery to keep the lights on.

In the previous month, the Moto E5 had reportedly received certification from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the U.S. Its leaked photo has revealed that it would be also coming with a rear-mounted fingerprint reader. It also seems to feature an LED flash for front camera. The leaked renders that have appeared in the recent past show that it will feature a microUSB port and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Moto E5 Plus

The Moto E5 Plus will be advanced model compared to the E5 and E5 Play phones. It will be the first Moto E series to arrive with an 18:9 aspect ratio display. Its 5.8-inch IPS LCD display will support HD+ resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels. The 32 GB and 64 GB models of the E5 Plus will feature 3 GB of RAM.

Its rear panel features a 16-megapixel camera with f/1.75 aperture and for shooting selfies, it will be coming with an 8-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture. It will feature a behemoth battery of 5,000mAh capacity. NFC and Compass are its other features.

The tipster has further stated that the other hole seen in above render is a sensor for focusing and depth sensing. This suggests that the Moto E5 Plus will be able to snap photos with bokeh effect. The Snapdragon 430 powered E5 Plus will be releasing in North America while other markets will be receiving its MediaTek MT675x variant. The above render of the phone revealed by Evan Blass suggests that it also features rear-facing fingerprint reader, a selfie camera flash, microUSB port and 3.5mm audio jack. The Moto E5 Plus along with Moto E5 has been certified by FCC in the previous month. According to Blass, it will be available as Moto E5 Supra through Cricket Wireless in the U.S.

As of this writing, there is no information available on the launch date and pricing of the Moto E5 series. Last year, the Moto E4 series were unveiled in June last year. The Moto E5 series may debut at some point in the second quarter this year.

A well-known leakster has claimed that Motorola will be releasing only these phones in this year. This suggests that the company may not launch successor versions of Moto C and C Plus this year.

According to the tipster, the Moto E series phones that will probably include Moto E5, Moto E5 Plus and Moto E5 Play will include basic specs and large battery. He has also claimed that the Moto E5 Play would be replacing the Moto C series. The Moto G6 series may come with two-year old flagship specs. The Moto X5 may be branded as high-end phone.

The Moto Z series phones such as Moto Z3 Play and Moto Z3 Force may come with futuristic tech which could probably mean that these handsets will carry support MotoMods accessories along with flagship specs.

Leaked information has revealed that the Moto E5 will coming with 5-inch display and large-sized battery. The Moto G6 and G6 Plus may feature 5.93-inch FHD+ resolution supporting display whereas the Moto G6 Play may feature a regular 5.7-inch HD display. The G6 and G6 Plus may respectively feature Snapdragon 630 and 450 chipsets whereas the low-budget G6 Play may come with Snapdragon 430. The G6, G6 Plus and G6 Play are rumored to respectively cost around ~$265, ~$235 and ~187.

The Moto X5 is expected to sport a notch-enabled full screen design like iPhone X flanked with quad cameras. The Moto Z3 and Z3 Play are expected to arrive with 6-inch screen with support 18:9 aspect ratio. It is speculated that there will be a third Moto Z3 model that may feature advanced specs like Snapdragon 845 and higher resolution display. It is quite obvious that all the Z3 models will include support for MotoMods accessories. The leakster has added that Motorola will not be using MediaTek chipset on its phones this year.

The Moto E series is the company’s budget series and usually come with an affordable price but quality build. We expect the Moto E5 to launch alongside the E5 Plus popular tipster Evan Blass has revealed on Twitter that there is going to be an E5 Play.

The tipster also shared a couple of real-looking photos of the E5 Play. This sounds interesting because this is the first time the E series is getting a Play model. The renders show only the front view of the device and worthy of note is the lack of a front home button as found on the Moto E4. That tends to confirm speculations that the E5 would pack a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The fingerprint sensor would be unique in that it would be embedded under the Moto logo at the rear. Chinese phone maker Smartisan did something similar on the Nut Pro 2. The device also comes with rounded edges and front flash with its selfie camera.

The Moto E5 is expected to feature a 5.0-inch display on a 16:9 aspect ratio and would be equipped with a MediaTek processor, virtual button among others. Evan Bass also revealed that the E5 Play is headed for Verizon while it would be known as E5 Cruise on Cricket Wireless.

In addition to the Moto E, Moto G, and Moto Z series, we saw the launch of the Moto C series and the return of the Moto X. Motorola also refreshed the G series six months after it launched. However, one phone the didn’t get a release this year is the Play variant of the Moto G series.

The first iteration of the Moto G Play was released last year as part of the 4th generation Moto G series. It packed less powerful specs than the Moto G4, such as a smaller display and battery.

According to Evan Blass, the 6th generation Moto G will see the return of the Play Variant. The Moto E series will also get a Play variant for the first time. So that is two extra phones for next year’s lineup. The lineup for both series according to Evan is as follows:

Moto G6 Play

Moto G6

Moto G6 Plus

Moto E5 Play

Moto E5

The announcement has gotten mixed reviews. While some are excited about it, others say the lineup is already saturated with phones that differ only slightly. There is also the case of some phones not getting support after their release.
