Motorola has introduced the Moto G87 as its latest G series smartphone and the successor to last year’s Moto G77. The phone brings a sharper display, a higher-resolution main camera, stronger durability ratings, and Android 16 out of the box.

A 200MP camera leads the upgrade list

The biggest upgrade is the rear camera system. The Moto G87 packs a 200MP main sensor with Optical Image Stabilization and Ultra Pixel technology, which Motorola claims improves light sensitivity by 16 times for low-light photography, along with 2x lossless zoom. An 8MP ultrawide with an f/2.2 aperture rounds out the back, while the front gets a 32MP shooter for selfies and video calls. Features include Auto Smile Capture, Portrait Mode across 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm focal lengths, and Google Photos tools like Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, Reimagine, and Auto Frame.

The display gets brighter and sharper

The phone features a 6.78-inch 1.5K Extreme AMOLED display with a 1272 x 2772 pixel resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and up to 5000 nits peak brightness. Motorola says the resolution is 17 percent higher than standard Full HD. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i.

Performance, battery and software

Under the hood, the Moto G87 runs on the 6nm MediaTek Dimensity 6400 chipset, with two Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.5GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at 2GHz, paired with an Arm Mali-G57 MC2 GPU. It comes with 4GB or 8GB LPDDR4x RAM, 128GB or 256GB UFS 2.2 storage, and microSD expansion up to 2TB. RAM Boost can virtually expand memory up to 24GB.

The device packs a 5200mAh battery with 30W TurboPower charging. Other features include dual SIM support, 5G, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, GPS, GLONASS, USB Type-C, NFC, an in-display fingerprint scanner, stereo speakers, Dolby Atmos, USB Type-C audio and Hi-Res Audio support. Motorola says audio output is up to 280 percent louder than the previous generation.

For durability, the Moto G87 carries IP66, IP68, and IP69 ratings, along with MIL-STD-810H certification. It is rated to survive drops from up to 1.2 meters. The phone measures 164.58 x 77.37 x 7.38mm and weighs 183g.

Pricing & availability

The Moto G87 starts at 399 euros (around $466). It will roll out across EMEA and Latin America in the coming weeks.

Motorola is gearing up to launch a couple of new phones, including the Razr 70 series and the Moto G87. Recent leaks have already revealed the design and key specifications of the upcoming Razr 70 lineup, but the design and other details of the G87 had remained under wraps. In a fresh leak, veteran tipster Evan Blass shared alleged official renders of the Moto G87, revealing its design for the first time.

Moto G87 color options and design revealed

As seen in the leaked renders, the Moto G87 will be available in dark and light shades of blue. In terms of design, it follows the current Motorola design language with a square-shaped camera island positioned in the upper-left corner, housing a 200-megapixel primary camera. The front features a flat display with rounded corners.

The right edge of the device includes the volume rocker and power button, while the left side appears to house the SIM card slot. The bottom edge seems to feature a microphone, a USB-C port, and a speaker grille.

Leaks suggest that the G87’s color variants will be marketed as Pantone Overture Gray and Pantone Blue Atoll. It is also expected to arrive in additional shades such as Arctic Seal, Black Olive, Nile, and Shaded Spruce.

Moto G87 specifications (rumored)

Recent reports suggest that the Moto G87 could be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 6000-series chipset, although the exact processor remains unknown. The phone is also expected to feature 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage.

The rest of its specifications are still under wraps. There is a possibility that the device could launch as early as next month in multiple markets.

Motorola looks set to expand its Moto G lineup once again. Just three months after the Moto G67 and G77 launched, early signs of a new model, the Moto G87, have started to show up online.

Schematics of the phone have appeared on official support pages, offering a look at the design and a few early details. A European retailer has also listed the device, revealing some more information and giving us a rough idea of what to expect.

The phone supports expandable storage via a hybrid SIM slot, with microSD support going up to 2TB. That is a big plus for users who work with large media files.

More concrete information comes from an Italian retailer, Epto, which has listed the Moto G87 in two variants, both with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. The listed price is €406.89. That places it slightly above the Moto G77 and G67, suggesting it will sit somewhere in between or just above them in the lineup.

Color options also seem to be a focus this time. The retailer listing mentions Pantone Overture Gray and Pantone Blue Atoll. A firmware leak hints at more finishes, including Arctic Seal, Black Olive, Nile, and Shaded Spruce, so there could be a wider range at launch.

Under the hood, the Moto G87 carries the codename “Naples” and is tied to the MT6835 platform. That points to a MediaTek Dimensity 6000 series chip, though the exact version is still unclear. Based on previous models, performance should land in familiar mid-range territory.

There is still no word on display, cameras, or battery, but the early details suggest a focus on practicality. With official pages already live and retail listings in place, a full launch does not seem too far off.
