<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lenovo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lenovo </a>has just recently confirmed that it is working on the new 2023 edition of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/motorola-razr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Motorola Razr</a> foldable smartphone. This new model will apparently be &#8216;much better&#8217; than its predecessor, so here is all we know about this foldable device.</p>

<p>The company has been rumored to be working on a new foldable phone for a while now. Based on <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/02/24/motorola-razr-2023-launch-date-leak-reveals-it-will-debut-before-galaxy-z-flip-5/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recent reports</a>, we have leaked images of the next generation of Moto Razr and even revealed its supposed launch timeline. Lenovo has yet to officially reveal any finer details regarding this device like its specifications, design, and release date, but the device is described as being &#8220;much better&#8221; than all of its predecessors. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="800" height="450" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Motorola-might-give-Razr-2023-a-bigger-update-than-anyone-ever-imagined.webp?x10805" alt="Motorola" class="wp-image-519584" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Motorola-might-give-Razr-2023-a-bigger-update-than-anyone-ever-imagined.webp 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Motorola-might-give-Razr-2023-a-bigger-update-than-anyone-ever-imagined-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Motorola-might-give-Razr-2023-a-bigger-update-than-anyone-ever-imagined-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Motorola-might-give-Razr-2023-a-bigger-update-than-anyone-ever-imagined-696x392.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Motorola-might-give-Razr-2023-a-bigger-update-than-anyone-ever-imagined-747x420.webp 747w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></figure></div>

<p>Furthermore, one such improvements are with upgrades to the folding mechanism itself. Apparently, the company will &#8220;focus on the hinge and applications.&#8221; As of right now, the official announcement of this device is just around the corner and it is highly unlikely that the existing Razr (2022) model will be launching in the US market. The rumors also claim that the Razr 2023 will beat even the Galaxy Z Flip 5 from Samsung.</p>

<p>Another major upgrade is via a new cover screen that is a 2.7 inch AMOLED panel, which is larger than the 1.9 inch cover display on the Galaxy Z Fold 4. While the company claims that the Razr has been well received in the market, but Samsung is still the market leader in the foldable phone market. But regardless, the company appears to making efforts to build its clamshell folding phone to be better than others in the same category.</p>

But now, a new patent reveals that the company might be working on taking the flip phone evolution a step further.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-441981 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Screenshot-2022-02-07-185842.png?x10805" alt="Motorola" width="897" height="501" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Screenshot-2022-02-07-185842.png 897w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Screenshot-2022-02-07-185842-300x168.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Screenshot-2022-02-07-185842-768x429.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Screenshot-2022-02-07-185842-696x389.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Screenshot-2022-02-07-185842-752x420.png 752w" sizes="(max-width: 897px) 100vw, 897px" /></p>
<p>The new patent was spotted on WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) a couple of weeks ago and was spotted by <a href="https://www.phonearena.com/news/motorola-flip-phone-patent_id138300" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>PhoneArena</em></a>. Looking at this patent, the foldable flip phone will have its display bend outwards rather than inward, which is the opposite of the typical clamshell design. In other words, this is a fresh new take in the flip phone category, with both the front and rear sides being covered by the display when folded.</p>
<p>Since its a foldable phone, the device features a flexible screen that can bend backwards from its hinge in the middle. Interestingly, Motorola is only offering a single camera module that is mounted on the upper half of the rear panel. This camera module is raised and will likely act as both the primary and front facing camera since one can just turn the smartphone around and use the folded display on the back to take a selfie.</p>

<p>Keep in mind that this is still just a patent and we have no way of confirming if the American smartphone maker is actually working on such a device. However, with the the launch of the Moto Razr 2019, it is clear that the company is integrating its classic designs with cutting edge technology. So it wouldn&#8217;t arrive as a surprise if the next gen Razr features this display.</p>

In case you forgot Moto&#8217;s first folding phone amid <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/08/12/samsung-galaxy-z-flip-3-under-display-camera/">Samsung&#8217;s new releases</a>, the Razr has finally been updated from a much older Android 10 to Android 11.</span></p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr-2.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-286947" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr-2.png?x10805" alt="Moto Razr" width="634" height="593" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr-2.png 634w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr-2-300x281.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr-2-449x420.png 449w" sizes="(max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Starting today, the Razr sold through Verizon will be receiving Android 11 via an OTA update. The smartphone was initially launched with Android 9 (Pie), and it&#8217;s great to see the Android 11 making its way to the Razr even though it&#8217;s quite late. After all, Moto&#8217;s reputation with software updates hasn&#8217;t been great. The </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/03/18/motorola-razr-5g-android-11-update/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">2020 Moto Razr received the Android 11 update sometime in April</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, which is quite late considering it&#8217;s almost time for the next Android release.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The update is rolling out to the models sold by Verizon with build RPV31.Q2-62-7-10. The Android 11 update brings many new features, including Conversations and Chat Bubbles, new media controls, one-time permissions, and other features. The latest update also brings the July Android security patch. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The update is currently rolling out in a phased manner, so it might take a while before you receive the Android 11 update. You will receive a notification as soon as the update hits your smartphone. However, you can also check for the update manually Settings&gt; About phone&gt; System update.</span></p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-01.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-289480" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-01.png?x10805" alt="motorola razr 01" width="865" height="527" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-01.png 865w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-01-300x183.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-01-768x468.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-01-696x424.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-01-689x420.png 689w" sizes="(max-width: 865px) 100vw, 865px" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Recently several Moto smartphones received the Android 11 update, starting January, including Moto G Pro, Moto G8 and Moto G8 Power. In March, the </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/03/17/android-11-update-begins-rolling-out-to-the-motorola-edge-verizon/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Edge+ (Verizon)</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> also received the Android 11 update from these Moto smartphones.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In case you missed it, Google just released the fourth beta build of </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/02/21/android-12-features/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Android 12</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The Android 12 is due to release this fall with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Android 12 brings the new material design dubbed Material You. Well, it will be exciting to see if the Razr could make it to the Android 12 or if this update will be the last one for the device.</span></p>

<p>The company had recently sent out teasers, revealing that the phone&#8217;s launch could take place on 9th September. Now, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lenovo">Lenovo</a>-backed company has released a new poster which indicates that the same phone could launch in China on 10th September, just a day after its global launch.</p>

<p>While the company has not revealed anything about this upcoming smartphone, some details have leaked online. It is claimed that the upcoming Moto Razr 5G, or whatever the company ends up calling it, features the same design style as the original <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/motorola-razr-2019/">Motorola Razr</a>.</p>
<p>The smartphone will be slightly thicker than the previous-generation model and will have more rounded edges. There&#8217;s also a fingerprint scanner hidden into the logo at the back, along with a smaller notch on top of the display.</p>

<p>The press renders of the unannounced new Gold color have been shared by Evan Blass but has not revealed anything else related to this variant. This means that the could come with the same set of specifications as the standard model.</p>

<p>Motorola has started sending out media invites confirming a launch event on February 23 at 7 PM CEST, just a day before the MWC 2020 kicks off. This could be a smart move from the Lenovo owned brand given that both <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> are <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/12/17/huawei-p40-confirmed-to-launch-in-march-2020/">not going to launch</a> their flagship devices at this event. So Motorola&#8217;s new smartphone could get a decent spotlight at the Barcelona event.</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s last true flagship was the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/motorola-moto-z2-force/">Motorola Z2 Force</a>, which was announced in August 2017. And the closest thing to a flagship smartphone from Motorola lately is the new <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/motorola-razr-2019/">Razr 2019</a>. However, even the Razr caters to a niche market with mid-range specs.</p>
<p>We don&#8217;t have much information on what device is meeting us at the event, but it could likely be the rumored <a href="http://gizmochina.com/2020/01/28/motorola-edge-spotted-with-snapdragon-865-and-12gb-ram-appeared-on-geekbench/">Motorola Edge+ that was spotted on Geekbench</a> today.</p>

Samsung&#8217;s Galaxy Fold is already available for purchase across the globe, and the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/11/15/huawei-mate-x-5g-sold-out-in-less-than-a-minute-in-first-sale-in-china/">Huawei Mate X went on sale in China today</a>. Now, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/motorola">Motorola</a> Razr is here to<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/11/14/motorola-razr-with-foldable-display-and-snapdragon-710-debuts-for-1499/"> challenge these two foldable smartphones</a>, with a unique design. Instead of adopting a form factor that transforms your regular-sized smartphone into a tablet, the Motorola Razr makes your regular smartphone a lot more compact by folding it in half.</p>
<p>The Razr 2019&#8217;s design is inspired by the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/07/25/throwback-tech-thursday-moto-razr-v3-icon-revisited/">iconic Razr v3 clamshell smartphone</a> from the 2000s. However, the new model gets rid of the physical keyboard and brings an all-screen design on the inside, featuring a flexible <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/pOLED">pOLED</a> display panel. This enables the phone to transform from a regular-sized smartphone into something as compact as the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/31/nokia-110-feature-phone-with-18-day-standby-launched/">Nokia 110</a> when folded in half.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-01.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-289480" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-01.png?x10805" alt="motorola razr 01" width="865" height="527" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-01.png 865w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-01-300x183.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-01-768x468.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-01-696x424.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-01-689x420.png 689w" sizes="(max-width: 865px) 100vw, 865px" /></a><br />
But do we really need a super compact smartphone like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/motorola-razr">Motorola Razr</a>? Especially when it&#8217;s only half a phone, literally, with its less than impressive hardware?</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3>A lot less phone at $1500.</h3>
<p>Today&#8217;s smartphones pack in a lot of features in an incredibly tight space. So if you are going to add some cool new tech without increasing its size, some features have to be axed.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_289314" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-289314" style="width: 940px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Motorola-Razr.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-289314" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Motorola-Razr.jpg?x10805" alt="Motorola Razr" width="940" height="627" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Motorola-Razr.jpg 940w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Motorola-Razr-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Motorola-Razr-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Motorola-Razr-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Motorola-Razr-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-289314" class="wp-caption-text">Motorola Razr</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>First, a foldable flip design divides a regular-sized smartphone into two sections for hardware. The manufacturer has to work with these two sections to fit in the components. Not to mention, it will need a robust hinge design, as seen in the Motorola Razr, which will further take up some precious space. So you are left with limited space for essential hardware like processor, battery, and even cameras.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/11/14/xiaomi-patents-motorola-razr-like-foldable-phone/">Xiaomi patents Motorola Razr-like foldable phone</a></strong></h6>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h4>Now let&#8217;s take a closer look at the Motorola Razr.</h4>
<p>The phone features an incredibly tall form factor (172 x 72 x 6.9mm). However, some space is taken up by the hinge at the center. So it&#8217;s not surprising that the Razr packs in a below-average 2510mAh battery. That&#8217;s less than what <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/google-pixel-4/">Pixel 4</a> brings to the table and do you recall how terrible its battery life is?<br />
You may argue that the 2.7-inch small display upfront will help in conserving this battery but what&#8217;s the use of a foldable phone if you are always afraid to use its larger sized display?</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-03.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-289555" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-03.png?x10805" alt="motorola razr 03" width="650" height="400" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-03.png 650w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-03-300x185.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-03-356x220.png 356w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><br />
Now let&#8217;s take a look at its camera setup. It has a 16MP f/1.7 primary sensor above the secondary OLED panel and a 5MP secondary sensor on the flexible display&#8217;s notch. While the 16MP single sensor may turn out to be good, you are still missing out on major camera features like telephoto, wide-angle, and even macro, which have become standard among flagships of 2019. For a phone that costs $1500, this camera setup lacks a lot of important features.<br />
Also, you have to settle for a decent but still mid-range Snapdragon 710 chip. The SD710 usually powers smartphones that cost only about a third of the Razr&#8217;s selling price. Ideally, you would have expected something like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/snapdragon">Snapdragon</a> 855 inside such an expensive device. And the phone doesn&#8217;t impress us in its software department either. It will come with the old <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android">Android </a>9 Pie when it ships in January 2020!</p>
<p>I agree that the Motorola Razr looks cool. If it was any cheaper, I would have probably thought about getting one, despite its hardware limitations. The flip design makes it one of the coolest smartphones of 2019. However, when I&#8217;m paying $1500, I would definitely expect top-end hardware as well. After all, a smartphone is not just defined by its design.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-02.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-289554" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-02.png?x10805" alt="motorola razr 02" width="485" height="488" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-02.png 485w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-02-150x150.png 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-02-298x300.png 298w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/motorola-razr-02-417x420.png 417w" sizes="(max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px" /></a></p>
<p>So despite the innovative hinge design (which is really cool btw) on the Motorola Razr, you have to settle for a limited camera experience, terrible battery life, and an average CPU if you are going to get the phone.</p>
<p>Are these sacrifices worth the foldable flip design?</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t think so.</p>
<p>And when you have competitors like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold-5g/">Galaxy Fold</a> that features top of the line hardware, including fantastic battery life and powerful camera performance, it makes you think whether it&#8217;s a good decision to spend $1500 on the Motorola Razr. If you want a compact yet powerful smartphone, get <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s10e-exynos/">the S10e</a>. Or if you want a foldable, it&#8217;s probably a good idea to spend a little more and get the Galaxy Fold.</p>

<p>In the company&#8217;s latest video commercial, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/motorola">Motorola</a> shows us how the original Moto Razr has transformed into the new Razr <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/foldable">foldable</a>. The video pays special attention to the cool new hinge design that allows the flexible screen to open up to 180 degrees without any visible creases or marks.</p>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" width="696" height="392" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/FC5FcfZf7xw?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>Just like other foldables, the Motorola Razr comes with two screens, a primary Flex view P-OLED display of 6.2-inches and a secondary OLED screen upfront of 2.7-inches. Given its super small 2510mAh battery, it&#8217;s probably a good idea to use the OLED screen on the front for most features.</p>
<p>The phone is powered by the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/snapdragon">Snapdragon</a> 710 mid-range processor with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The phone runs on a near-stock version of Android 9 Pie. Below the secondary screen on the front, the Razr features a 16MP f/1.7 aperture camera, while there&#8217;s a 5MP shooter on top of the flexible screen.</p>
<p>The Motorola Razr will ship next year in January 2020.</p>

As the date draws closer, we expect the rumour mills to continue to buzz with leaks and buzzing it is!<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr-2.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-286947" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr-2.png?x10805" alt="Moto Razr" width="634" height="593" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr-2.png 634w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr-2-300x281.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr-2-449x420.png 449w" sizes="(max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px" /></a></p>
<p>The latest leak is that of an official-looking image of the Moto Razr shared by tipster Evan Bass on his <a href="https://twitter.com/evleaks/status/1189908594797494272" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Twitter</a> account. The image said to be of the Razr gives us one of the distinct views of the device with the juicy details in tow. The design indeed resembles that of the classic Moto Razr lineup fro where the foldable phone design concept emanated. The design includes the bulky chin. The chin holds a physical button which may well house the fingerprint sensor.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>EDITOR&#8217;S PICK: <a title="Throwback Tech Thursday: Revisiting the Iconic Moto Razr V3, the Phone That Made You Look Cool!" href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/07/25/throwback-tech-thursday-moto-razr-v3-icon-revisited/" rel="bookmark">Throwback Tech Thursday: Revisiting the Iconic Moto Razr V3, the Phone That Made You Look Cool!</a></strong></h6>
<p>The image doesn&#8217;t reveal all aspects of the device in full but the display will likely be a long one as it seems to occupy the entire front aspect including where the physical button sits on the retro model. The foldable phone seems to have the same form factor as its progenitor which means it won&#8217;t be very wide. Thus, it may as well have a custom UI design for the long display when it is opened. The front will also likely house a smaller display when it is folded.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-286946" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr.png?x10805" alt="Moto Razr" width="848" height="821" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr.png 848w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr-300x290.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr-768x744.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr-696x674.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/moto-razr-434x420.png 434w" sizes="(max-width: 848px) 100vw, 848px" /></a></p>
<p>Earlier rumours tipped the Moto Razr foldable phone to come with a staggering $1,500 price tag. It features a 6.2-inch display when opened but the aspect ratio is not known right now. The device will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor paired with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of storage. The device is also rumoured to come in white, black or gold. It will get its juice from a 2,730-mAh battery.</p>

This was quite different than the horizontal folding designs we have seen before, like on <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold/">Galaxy Fold</a> and the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x/">Mate X</a>. The new design transforms a regular bar smartphone into a clamshell phone, allowing you to fold it in the middle, just like a flip phone. The teaser kind of confirms what we have in store for us in the coming months.</p>

<p>This is not the first time we are hearing about <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/07/18/samsung-new-foldable-smartphone-next-year/">Samsung&#8217;s clamshell-type folding design</a>. And if you recall, a few weeks back, a poster for the Samsung W20 5G (W2020) was spotted at an event, which revealed it would have a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/foldable">foldable</a> design. The &#8216;W&#8217; series is the company&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/11/09/samsung-w2019-flip-phone-is-official-with-dual-screens-dual-cameras-and-snapdragon-845/">premium flip phone lineup that&#8217;s traditionally launched in China</a>. But it looks like the update to the &#8216;W&#8217; series will feature a foldable screen. An old report said that the phone will have a 6.7-inch foldable screen and the company will start sourcing components from November this year.</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true">
<p lang="en" dir="ltr">Samsung&#39;s second foldable phone will be the Galaxy W20 5G, a &quot;flip phone.&quot;<br />Someone caught its preheating poster at the exhibition. <a href="https://t.co/KEMaSoQvJ6">pic.twitter.com/KEMaSoQvJ6</a></p>

<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>Another report reveals that Samsung will use two batteries inside the upcoming flip-type foldable. One will feature a capacity of 900mAh while there&#8217;ll be another one featuring a larger capacity of unknown size. <a href="https://www.galaxyclub.nl/nieuws/samsung-galaxy-fold-2-heeft-twee-batterijen-een-grote-en-een-kleine/">Galaxyclub.nl</a> adds that this two-battery design of unequal sizes would be ideal for a phone with a foldable design like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/motorola">Motorola</a> RAZR.</p>
<p><img src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/galaxy-fold-2.jpg?x10805" alt="Samsung Galaxy Fold 2" /></p>
<p>In case you missed, Motorola is likely to reveal its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/18/motorolas-november-invite-hints-foldable-razr-phone-launch/">first foldable at the November event</a> and it could feature a RAZR-like foldable design.</p>

While it may not be a popular player in the market today, the brand has been selling smartphones since 1983, when it sold the giant brick of a phone, the DynaTAC 8000x! But the real success for the company came via the iconic <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/moto">Moto</a> Razr series, particularly the Moto Razr V3.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-02.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-266396" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-02.jpg?x10805" alt="moto razr 02" width="1200" height="900" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-02.jpg 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-02-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-02-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-02-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-02-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-02-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-02-696x522.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-02-1068x801.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-02-560x420.jpg 560w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></a></p>
<p>Why was it so popular? Because it had one of the sexiest designs in a phone of its time. It was sleek, all-metal, and best of all, the flip to open sound was pretty satisfying. Anyone who wanted to be cool back in 2005 got this device. Well, by anyone, I mean someone with decent money, because this phone set you back more than $400 at launch. While that would get you a decent mid-ranger today, $400 was a significant amount to spend on a fancy phone back then.</p>
<p>The Moto <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/moto-razr">Razr V3</a> got full marks for its design. So it&#8217;s no surprise that the phone managed to sell over 130 million units between 2004 to 2008. It is the best selling clamshell phone till date, which goes on to show its popularity among users. The phone drew long lines, quickly selling out too.</p>
<p>What Was So Special About Its Design?</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Moto-razr-03.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-266394" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Moto-razr-03.jpg?x10805" alt="Moto razr 03" width="600" height="600" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Moto-razr-03.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Moto-razr-03-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Moto-razr-03-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Moto-razr-03-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>Motorola dared to be different with the Moto Razr V3. It was a time when every phone had started to look like a brick. Yes, there were weird designs from companies like Nokia, but they were still fairly rectangular and thick. Remember the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/06/20/tech-throwback-thursday-nokia-lipstick-phone-7280/">lipstick phone</a>? Crazy design, but still a brick!</p>
<p>What made the Razr special was it chic look. It was super sleek, light weight (95 grams), and was shiny, all thanks to its metal design. The body was made out of magnesium and aluminum and unlike other smartphones in its day, the phone&#8217;s keypad was tactile and stayed flush with the body.</p>
<p>The simple act of flipping open the phone got a special fan following. Even today, I&#8217;m sure a lot of us would just pause for a second to see a Moto Razr flip open. That&#8217;s how iconic the Moto Razr has become!</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-266397" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr.jpg?x10805" alt="moto razr" width="800" height="600" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-696x522.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/moto-razr-560x420.jpg 560w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></a></p>
<p>Another cool feature was its camera! No, it wasn&#8217;t high resolution or feature rich. But thanks to its clamshell design, you could take selfies or use it like a mirror too. The display outside wasn&#8217;t great though. But you could make it work.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a title="Honor’s revolutionary Smart Screen product will be announced at HDC 2019" href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/07/25/honors-revolutionary-smart-screen-product-will-be-announced-at-hdc-2019/" rel="bookmark">Honor’s revolutionary Smart Screen product will be announced at HDC 2019</a></strong></p>
<p>Talking about displays, guess where<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/12/12/vivo-nex-dual-display-edition-hands-on-photos-shows-off-its-beautiful-design/"> Vivo Nex Dual</a> gets its inspiration from? The Razr V3 featured two screens, a small 96 x 80 pixel display on the outside and a 2.2-inch 220 x 176 display inside. Both were color screens, but nothing to shout about when you compare it with smartphones today. However, the outside screen came in quite handy alerting the user about new notifications, charging, and other details in a short format. The phone had a pretty decent MP3 player too, so you could listen to songs and get into your groove in style.</p>
<p>The Moto Razr had a small 680mAh battery with 250 hours of standby and 7 hours of talktime. It was nothing special but given its sleek design, it was enough to keep users interested.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/motor-razr-02.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-266395" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/motor-razr-02.jpg?x10805" alt="motor razr 02" width="620" height="413" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/motor-razr-02.jpg 620w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/motor-razr-02-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px" /></a></p>
<p>Despite its expensive price tag, the phone became a status symbol among the youth. If you had a Moto Razr, you were considered to be cool! Motorola released the model in multiple color variants too, including a Black version. Later on, we would see updates to the original model like the Moto V3re and the Moto V3x.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s no denying that the Moto Razr V3 holds a special place among all phone users from the 2000s. While we are not sure if the company plans to revive the series <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/02/11/moto-razr-2019-realistic-renders-showcase-its-irresistible-foldable-design/">with a foldable clamshell like design</a>, it would be really cool to see its design being adapted to cater to today&#8217;s users.</p>
<p>Will we ever see a clamshell foldable smartphone from Motorola? <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/08/27/new-motorola-razr-flip-phone-with-foldable-screen-design-suggested-in-patent-filing/">Maybe we&#8217;ll</a>!</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s wait and watch.</p>

The Lenovo-oned company has severally been rumoured as planning to re-enact that design on its next-gen foldable phone which may bear the same Moto Razr moniker. A video of the Moto RAZR that captures the device from all sides has appeared on China&#8217;s Weibo.<img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-253943" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/moto-razr-2.png?x10805" alt="Moto Razr foldable phone" width="741" height="430" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/moto-razr-2.png 741w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/moto-razr-2-300x174.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/moto-razr-2-696x404.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/moto-razr-2-724x420.png 724w" sizes="(max-width: 741px) 100vw, 741px" /></p>
<p>The video indeed reaffirms that the phone will adopt a clamshell design but there won&#8217;t be any physical keyboard. The good thing about this design is that the Moto Razr won&#8217;t reach the size of a tablet when unfolded and will allow you some portability when it is folded. There is a front screen which we don&#8217;t think will serve too many purposes aside previewing selfie frames, displaying notifications and such like. The screen has a resolution of 600 x 800 pixels but the screen size is unknown. Just under the small screen is the selfie camera.</p>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" width="696" height="392" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/JYIiD_HP9LM?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Previous leaks tip the phone to arrive with a 6.2-inch OLED panel with 876 x 2142 pixels resolution. The Moto RAZR 2019 is speculated to be powered by the Snapdragon 710 SoC that includes an octa-core processor that works at 2.2 GHz and Adreno 616 graphics. The smartphone is expected to arrive in two variants such as 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage and 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage.<img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-253944" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/moto-razr-3.png?x10805" alt="" width="739" height="420" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/moto-razr-3.png 739w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/moto-razr-3-300x171.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/moto-razr-3-696x396.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 739px) 100vw, 739px" /></p>

<p>It is expected to arrive with a 2,730mAh battery that may carry support for 27W TurboPower charging. No word yet on when the model will go official ut it is likely going to bring an affordable option to the foldable phone segment.</p>
