This is coming more than a year after Android Pie was released and the Pie has even got a successor which has started rolling out for over a month running now. Several members of the XDA community have reported getting OTA updates for Android Pie.

The update may be coming quite late but it is better late than never. Android Pie brings several features that aren’t available on phones running Android Oreo. The Moto Z2 Play is the midrange version of the Moto Z2 and was released in 2017 running Android Nougat. It got updated to Android Oreo last year. This update may be the last that Motorola will push to the model.

EDITOR’S PICK: Let’s Revisit the OnePlus One just before the 7T launch in today’s Throwback Tech Thursday!

Since after Motorola was sold by Google to Lenovo, software update doesn’t seem to be a priority. We the company was still owned by Google, Android updates were faster. We can recall Motorola phones usually get updates around the same time as Google’s Nexus phones. In some cases, the Motorola devices even got it even faster, like the original Moto X which got Android 4.4 KitKat before the Nexus 4.

As with the Oreo update for the Moto Z2 Play which first rolled out in Brazil, Z2 Play users in Brazil have started receiving the update. We expect the OTA to be pushed to Z2 Play users in other regions.

Motorola is running a limited time discount on three (or four) of its phones. If you are on the search for a new phone to begin the year, you should check out these Moto Z2 Play, Moto G5 Plus and Moto X4 deals.

Starting with the Z2 Play, Motorola has slashed $100 off the price of the 64GB model bringing the price down to $399.99 from $499.99. The price cut applies to both the gold and gray variants.

The Moto G5 Plus has also gotten a price cut but on both storage variants unlike the Z2 Play. The 32GB variant is down by $20 while the 64GB edition gets $40 off bringing them to $209.99 and $259.99 respectively.

The Moto X4 is the other phone getting a deal. However, the deal varies depending on if you are purchasing the regular version or the Android One model.

The regular Moto X4 is $50 off and will sell for $349. The Android One version which doesn’t have Alexa installed gets $75 off and that brings the price down to $324.

The deals for the Moto Z2 Play and regular Moto X4 will end January 20 while the deal for the Moto G5 Plus ends January 13 and the Android One Moto X4 ends on January 15.

Motorola has mentioned on its official blog that the software rollout will begin this fall. The Moto E4, E4 Plus, Moto C and Moto C Plus smartphones that were released this year are not present on the above list which indicates that these phones may not receive Android 8.0 Oreo update.

Moto G4, Moto G4 Play and Moto G4 Plus were launched in May last year with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. These handsets have already Nougat update. However, it seems that even though they are over 1-year old devices, they may not be upgraded to Android 8.0. Hence, they are not listed above.

Motorola is rumored to be working on an Android One version of the Moto X4 smartphone and it is rumored to be aimed towards the U.S. markets. This smartphone is also expected to get the Oreo upgrade. In the U.S. Verizon is confirmed to release Android 8.0 Oreo update for Moto Z2 Force, Moto Z2 Play, Moto Z Force, Moto Z and Moto Z Play. Their unlocked versions are also confirmed to receive Android 8 update.

AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile are also going to release Oreo update for Moto Z2 Force. AT&T and T-Mobile will also release Android 8.0 firmware to Moto Z. Lastly, the unlocked versions Moo G5, Moto G5 Plus, Moto G5S and Moto GS5 Plus are also going to receive the software update.

However, a number of manufacturers have launch events or keynote addresses scheduled a day or two ahead of the official opening day. One of them is electronics giant, Lenovo and they have released a teaser video of what we should expect.

The 51-seconds long video includes a wide variety of products, though most of them have already been released. First we see the Lenovo Yoga Tablet with its halo keyboard coming on. Then the Tango-based Phab 2 Pro makes an appearance.

The Moto Z2 Play is also spotted along with a Hasselblad camera mod, and the Moto Z2 Force with the 360° camera mod. If you are a gamer, you may want to visit Lenovo’s booth and check out their Y-series gaming laptop as one makes an appearance in the video.

At the 20-second mark, what appears to be a smart speaker can be seen. Although, Lenovo announced an Alexa-powered speaker early this year at CES, which is still not available for purchase yet by the way, this speaker has a different design. It also appears to have a display. Our guess is that this is Lenovo’s version of the Amazon Echo Show and we will have a first look at IFA Berlin.

The product we are most excited to see is the Star Wars AR headset made in partnership with Disney. When it was announced at the D23 event last month, very few details were released. Now that Lenovo has teased it in its IFA video, we may see it in action and get answers to our unanswered questions. Another pair of VR glasses is also seen in the video.

There is no new phone in the video, so don’t get your hopes high about a new smartphone launching.

A few months ago, Lenovo announced it was shutting down its sub-brand ZUK after just 1.5 years in the market and four devices in total. Following that announcement were rumors that Lenovo was going to keep the UI of the ZUK phones and load it on Motorola phones launched in the country.

Now that it has been confirmed, it is safe to assume that all other Moto phones released in China will get the same treatment. The ZUI version number the Moto Z2 Play is running is 3.0 and its based on Android 7.1.1 too. This is a new version of the OS as the last version before the brand was shut down was ZUI 2.5.

There are still a few questions to be asked about the move. Will Lenovo make this exclusive to China alone or will it extend it to other Asian countries like India? Or even all Moto phones released globally? Will other Moto phones previously released in China receive ZUI updates or remain on the default Moto UI?

The Moto Z2 Play goes on sale on July 5 for ¥3299 (~$484).

The Moto Z2 Play arrives in China with 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and a 5.5-inches 1080p Super AMOLED display from Samsung. It is powered by a Snapdragon 626 SoC clocked at 2.2GHz.

The Moto Z2 Play has seen subtle changes in its design with the most important being its new 5.9mm thick all-metal body. That thinner design comes at the expense of a smaller 3000mAh battery.

There is a 12MP dual-pixel sensor with a f/1.7 aperture and 1.4um pixel size. The camera has laser autofocus, dual tone led flash and can record in slow motion at 120fps. The front camera is a 5MP wide-angle sensor with a f/2.2 aperture. It also gets a dual-LED flash.

Other features of the Moto Z2 Play include NFC, fingerprint scanner, dual SIM support (nano-only) and a splash resistant coating. The phone runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box.

Like the original Moto Z Play, the Z2 Play also has support for Moto Mods. There is the Hasselblad camera mod, the JBL SoundBoost 2 speaker mod, the InstaShare projector mod, the battery mod (not the new one) and Moto Shells. The Moto gamepad mod is not available. We don’t know if it isn’t just not available yet or it won’t be released in China at all.

Scheduled to be available for purchase this summer, the Moto Z2 will also make its way to Lenovo’s home country, China. According to industry insiders, the Moto Z2 Play will sell for the same price as the original Moto Z Play in China. That is ¥3299 (~$484), which is just $15 less than the international price.

The Moto Z2 Play has a 5.5-inch FHD AMOLED display and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 626 SoC. It is available with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage and also has a 3GB RAM + 32GB model.

There is a 12MP f/1.7 dual-pixel sensor on the rear and a 5MP f/2.2 shooter with dual LED flash up front. The downgrade comes in the smaller 3000mAh capacity cut down from 3500mAh battery in favor of a thinner body. The Z2 Play comes with Android 7.1.1 and has NFC and a fingerprint scanner. It also supports old and new Moto Mods.

A bonus with this is that they have kept the overall design the same from the Moto Z Play, with the exception of a thinner chassis at 5.99mm instead of 7mm. This has made the Moto Z2 Play suitable for backward compatibility with earlier modular accessories.

Chinese sources have leaked that Lenovo is looking to introduce a new UI system into the Moto line up for the Mainland market (Chinese Market). These rumors have emerged from insider’s photos.

Moto Z2 Play Running ZUI

The international version of the Moto Z2 Play will expect to remain shipped with the current Stock-Like Android UI, similar to its predecessors.

On the other hand, things may appear different in the home market. Lenovo may be releasing a Moto Z2 Play running a new ZUI version, reviving the recently shelved ZUK brand or at least its UI.

This approach may seem odd for international users for Lenovo to explore this idea of applying a non-stock Android experience on to a Moto device, however, in the Chinese market, it is known that the stock Android experience is not as popular as custom Android experiences.

RELATED: Moto Z2 Surfaces on AnTuTu: Packs Snapdragon 835, QHD Display & 4GB RAM

This has been proven from companies such as OnePlus, who provide an alternative UI to the home market, known as ‘HydrogenOS’; whilst international customers would most likely find their devices running OxygenOS which is very close to stock Android.

If Lenovo does offer Moto devices with a ZUI option, we would expect them to be found mostly in China or other Asian markets, however, we cannot rule out Lenovo’s strategy to introduce an alternative UI for the international market either.

But this leak can also be questionable, there is the possibility that the Moto Z2 Play could have had a ZUI ROM installed after purchase. On the other hand, considering the home market’s trend on custom Android experience, this can be completely genuine and if so, Lenovo is all set to releasing a ZUI Moto smartphone.

Would you be interested in purchasing a Moto Device running ZUI?

The Moto Z2 Play is now official and it brings along all we expected and more. This is the first of the Z2 line and while there isn’t much difference in terms of aesthetics, it is still an interesting device.

Moto Z2 Play Design

It is thinner and lighter. If you have not been living under a rock, you already know that the Moto Z2 Play comes with a smaller battery thanks to its now 5.9mm thick body. It also weighs less at 145g. The other changes are the redesigned antenna line and fingerprint sensor. If you liked the Moto Z lineup from last year, then you should be fine with this.

Moto Z2 Play Specs

The Moto Z2 Play keeps the 5.5-inch FHD AMOLED display from last year. The changes start with the Snapdragon 626 processor, a new 4GB RAM variant with 64GB storage alongside a 3GB RAM + 32GB model.

The 16MP rear camera has been swapped for a 12MP dual-pixel sensor with a large f/1.7 that captures more light. There is also a laser autofocus module. The front camera is still a 5MP f/2.2 sensor but now ha dual LED flash.

Since the Moto Z2 Play comes with a smaller 3000mAh battery, its battery claims have dropped from 50 hours to 30 hours. There’s Android 7.1.1 out of the box, NFC and a couple of new voice controls that don’t require yo unlocking the device.

New Moto Mods

The Moto Z2 Play works with Moto Mods just like last year’s model but it brings along a bunch of new ones.

There is the Moto Mod GamePad that has dual joysticks, a D-pad, shoulder buttons, and the four X, Y, A, B action buttons. The gamepad also comes with its own 1035mAh battery, so its not drawing juice from the phone. The battery should last up to 8hrs on a single charge. The mod has red LED lights that responds to controls, a USB-C port for charging and a 3.5mm headset jack.

There is also the TurboPower Pack that features Motorola’s signature TurboPower fast charge. It has a 3490mAh battery that can be charged up to 50% in juts 20 minutes via a USB Type-C port while it charges the phone at speeds of up to 15W.

Motorola announced the JBL SoundBoost 2 Mod. It is now splash resistant, has a fabric covering and lasts up to 10 hours. There is also a new JBL app that you can use to tweak the speaker’s audio.

The Moto Style Shell also make a comeback but in a more interesting way. It now adds wireless charging support when you slap it on the Moto Z2 Play or any Moto Z phone for that matter.

Moto Z2 Play Price & Availability

The 4GB RAM/64GB ROM variant is priced at $499.There is no mention of the price for the 3GB RAM variant.

The GamePad, SoundBoost 2, and TurboPower Pack mods are priced at $79 each, while the wireless charging style shells will sell for $39.99. They all will be available this summer for purchase.

The invite which is written in Spanish mentions the launch of a new product on June 1 at 9:30 am. A tweet by Motorola Canada has confirmed there will indeed be a launch tomorrow.

Guess what?! We’re announcing the next bold phone from Motorola on June 1st. pic.twitter.com/SCyEkNtPza

The tweet doesn’t mention the phone but sources say it is the Moto Z2 Play.

The Moto Z2 Play has been in the news a lot lately. We first got to see press renders of the device which gave us the hint that it would be thinner. Then a TENAA listing confirmed that it will be under 6mm thick (excluding the camera bump) and will sport a smaller 2820mAh battery.

Lenovo then issued a statement saying it will launch with a 3000mAh battery which is better than 2820mAh but still smaller than the original Moto Z Play’s 3510mAh battery.

The Moto Z2 Play will look a lot like its predecessor save for the redesigned fingerprint scanner, antenna lines, and Moto mods connector. It will sport a Snapdragon 626 processor, 4GB RAM, & 64GB ROM. There is a 12MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera, both with LED flash. It will run Android 7.1.1 out of the box and support the Moto Mods released last year.

The benchmarking site has revealed the smartphone will be powered by the Snapdragon 626 which is a slight upgrade over the Snapdragon 625.

The test results shows the Moto Z2 Play scoring 891 points on the single-core test and 4538 points on the multi-core test. The listing also reveals the Z2 Play will come with 4GB of RAM and run Android 7.1.1 out of the box.

The Moto Z Play was praised for its great battery life but we may not be able to say the same for the Moto Z2 Play. Unlike its predecessor that has a 3510mAh battery, the Z2 Play will come with a smaller 3000mAh battery.

The only reason I believe led to Lenovo/Motorola taking this decision is so that it can sell off the thousands of battery mods it has unsold in its warehouses. Nobody complained about the 7mm thickness of the Moto Z Play, so shaving off so much battery to keep the thickness under 6mm isn’t an excuse.

The Moto Z2 Play will launch with a 5.5-inch OLED display, a 12MP rear camera, and a 5MP front facing camera with its own LED flash. There is no launch date yet but there are rumors it may launch early next month.

On the official Twitter handle of Lenovo, an employee of the company who is mentioned as Auxen has revealed that the Moto Z2 Play would be coming with a non-removable Li-Ion battery of 3,000mAh capacity. Auxen has given out this information as a reply to a user who said if Z2 Play is coming with a small battery, the company was making a big mistake. It is unclear whether what Auxen said was a leaked information that he revealed on his own or a conscious reply from the marketing team of the company.

In the previous week, the alleged Moto Z2 Play had appeared on TENAA with a 2,820mAh battery inside it. However, Lenovo’s employee claims that it has a 3,000 mAh capacity. There is a possibility that 3,000mAh could be the rated capacity of the battery, but its actual capacity could be 2,820mAh.

Earlier in this month, rumors started swirling that in a bid to launch a thinner Moto Z2 Play, Lenovo may reduce the size of its battery. The original phone from last year has a thickness of 7mm which means that the upcoming Z2 Play would much thinner. The TENAA listing has revealed that the Moto Z2 Play has a slim profile of 5.99mm.

Since Lenovo is packing a smaller battery inside the Z2 Play, it is expected that the Snapdragon 626 chipset present inside the phone would help in delivering optimized battery performance. Compared to the 2 GHz Snapdragon 625 that fuels the original Moto Z Play, the 2.2 GHz Snapdragon 626 is more energy efficient.

According to TENAA listing, the Moto Z2 Play has a 5.5-inch full HD display and there is a 4 GB RAM to support the SD 626 chip. The native storage of the phone is 64 GB. It has a 12-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera. Both the camera sensors are coupled with LED flash. It runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS. Like the predecessor phone, the Moto Z2 Play also supports Moto Mods accessories. Speculations are rife that the Moto Z2 Play may get unveiled on June 8.

You’d have thought the changes coming to its successor, the Moto Z2 Play would be minimal. Just a newer processor and improved cameras. Instead of leaving at that, someone at Lenovo decided that it was better to kill the most important feature of the Moto Z Play, its battery, in favor of a thinner design.

The TENAA listing for the Moto Z2 Play just confirmed that the phone will come with a 2820mAh battery. That’s almost 700mAh shaved off for a few extra millimeters of thinness.

The Moto Z2 Play is listed with model number XT1710-08 on the Chinese certification site. It has a 5.49-inch OLED display, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. There is an octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz which we believe is the Snapdragon 626.

The rear camera is a 12MP sensor and there is a 5MP camera up front with its own LED flash. The Moto Z2 Play still has a camera bump and sports a redesigned Moto Mod pins at the base. It runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat, weighs 145g and measures 156.2 x 76.2 x 5.99 (mm).

This year Lenovo is expected to launch the successor models of these smartphones. The leaked renders of Motorola Moto Z2 Play and Moto Z2 Force have already appeared in the recent past. However, it is only now that a leaked render of the Moto Z2 smartphone has appeared.

in April, the well-known leakster, Evan Blass had revealed that the Moto Z’s successor would be arriving with Moto Z2 moniker. The new image has been leaked a reliable source that is familiar with the plans of the company. The leaked photo only reveals the frontside of the phone. It can be said that the Moto Z2 flagship resembles a lot with the Moto Z2 Play smartphone.

The top bezel of the phone features an LED flash for the selfie camera along with some sensors and earpiece. It appears that the Moto Z2 will come with front-mounted fingerprint scanner. The images of Moto branded smartphones usually feature a clock along with the date on the home screen.

It is likely that the photo may have been photoshopped to remove the home screen and clock so that viewers may not see the date on the phone. However, the date present on the home screen of Moto Z2 Play indicates that it would be launching on June 8. Hence, it is likely that Lenovo may launch the Moto Z2 alongside the Moto Z2 Play.

Last year, the Moto Z and Moto Z2 Force came with similar specs, but the latter arrive with a ShatterShield screen. Speculations have it that the upcoming Moto Z2 and Moto Z2 Force would be running on Snapdragon 835 chipset. The Moto Z2 Force is also expected to feature ShatterShield display.

Last year’s Moto Z2 and Z2 Force did not feature a 3.5mm audio jack. However, this year’s Z2 Force will bring back the 3.5mm jack. There is no confirmation on whether the Moto Z2 will be coming with or without the standard audio port.

Today, he has tweeted a leaked image that seems to be shot at the same presentation. The new image shows the entire line of next generation Moto devices.

Before getting acquired by Lenovo, Motorola had released three series of Moto devices since couple of years. The Moto X line constituted of flagship phones and the Moto G series were midrange phones. The Moto E budget-friendly phones came with modest specs.

After getting acquired by Lenovo, the Chinese firm released the new Moto Z series with support for modular accessories in the previous year and there were no Moto X smartphones in 2016. It made the smartphone enthusiasts feel that the Moto Z line was introduced to replace the Moto X series. In 2016, Lenovo had also released Moto G4 and Moto E3 series phones. However, rumors started swirling in the last quarter of 2016 that Lenovo may launch the Moto X this year.= with midrange specs.

The following leaked shot shows the entire list of next-generation Moto series smartphones that are going to launch in future.

The Moto gS+ would be coming with a 5.5-inch FHD screen and dual rear cameras. Since Lenovo has already released 2017 Moto G series phones, the Moto G5 and G5 Plus, the Moto gS and Moto gS+ seems to be 2018 models.

The Moto E will have a 5-inch screen overlaid with 2.5D and will also include a fingerprint scanner. The Moto C will be a 4G phone with 5-inch HD screen that supports 480 x 854 pixels. The Moto C Plus would be arriving with a 5-inch HD display and a 4,000mAH battery.

While there weren’t so many changes, one of those we took note of was the slightly thinner body. That singular design change meant that the Moto Z2 Play may feature a smaller battery.

Turns out our prediction was true. The Moto Z2 Play will indeed feature a smaller battery. This was confirmed by VentureBeat, citing a marketing material as their source. Rather than the 3510mAh battery that graced the first-gen Moto Z Play, the Moto Z2 Play will come with a 3000mAh battery. That’s a 14% reduction in battery capacity.

The reduction in battery capacity results in the Moto Z2 Play having its thickness and weight cut down by a millimeter and 20g respectively. The processor is said to be the Snapdragon 626 which is an upgraded version of the SD625 but with a higher clock speed. The RAM has also been bumped up to 4GB and storage is now 64GB.

READ MORE: The Moto C Draws Closer to Launch As It Gets Bluetooth SIG Certification

The rear camera has also been replaced. It is now a 12MP sensor with a f/1.7 aperture and dual autofocus pixels instead of the 16MP f/2.0 module on the original Z Play. The front facing camera remains a 5MP shooter and the screen, a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display.

Why Lenovo decided to reduce the thickness of the phone at the expense of battery life is best known to them but we can’t remember anyone complaining about the Z Play’s thickness.

Now, Louie Chan HK, a Weibo user has revealed some of the upcoming Moto Style Shells. Unlike previous Moto Style Shells that were made of different materials like Oak and Leather, the newer ones seem to be focused on certain kind of design.

Read More: Leaked Moto X (2017) Hands-on Images Shows its Design from Different Angles

As it can be seen in the above image that was shared on Weibo, the design of the new Style Shells is focused on scenery. One of them shows the beauty of a skyscraper and another one shows an evening shot of a city and the other one displays a view of the sunset between two buildings.

Like the currently available Style Shells, the newer ones appear quite thin. Moto Z phones have a protruding rear camera module. Hence, adding a Moto Style Shell can help the phone to sport a flat rear.

There is no information on the material of these Moto Style Shells. However, they appear to be built from the same material and have a glossy appeal. There is a possibility that these Moto Style Shells could be made of plastic or metal. The different designs that can be seen may not be engraved on the cover but it could be overlaid by using some kind of material such as vinyl or silicon.

All the three Moto Style Shells have a circular cut-out for the round-shaped rear camera of Moto Z. It seems that it can be also used on the upcoming Moto Z2 flagship that also features a circular-shaped camera housing. Below the camera cut-out is the circular Moto batwing logo on each shell.

The existing Moto Style Shells are available for $20 each. There is a possibility that these new shells that sport elaborate designs which may be printed in a manner to last longer might come with a costlier pricing. It is likely that the new rear covers may launch and become available globally for purchase by this week.

The Moto Z2 and Moto Z2 Play leaked images and details have already surfaced. Since the predecessor models debuted in June last year, rumors have it that Lenovo will be unleashing the next-generation Moto Z phones in June 2017.

A week ago, we saw leaked images of the Moto Z2 Force. Quick on its heels is a press render of the Moto Z2 Play obtained by TechnoBuffalo.

On first look, the design doesn’t look to be different from that of the Moto Z Play released last year. The camera hump is still there and you have the Moto batwing logo and moto mod connector gracing the rest of the back plate. The front looks almost the same too. The position of the front flash, earpiece, light sensor and front camera are exactly as they were on the Moto Z Play. So what then is different?

Moto Z2 Play

Moto Z Play

First, the fingerprint scanner has been changed to a pill-shaped one. Then they swapped the shape of the front LED flash with that of the light sensor. The Moto Z2 Play also appears to be thinner in this press render, however that will be confirmed when the dimensions become known.

The visible changes on the rear include the new antenna line that runs along the entire border; the redesign of the moto mod connector pins; and the new sensor for the camera.

READ MORE: Moto E4 Spotted on GeekBench, Revealing Some of Its Specs

The Moto Z Play was released as a mid-range device with a Snapdragon 625 SoC and a 3510mAh battery. The combination of the power efficient SD625 and large battery gave the Moto Z Play an impressive battery life. Motorola will want to stick to that strategy, so the Moto Z2 Play may launch with the Snapdragon 626. The battery might be a bit smaller if the phone ends up being thinner but we expect it not to be significantly smaller. Display size and resolution may remain the same and older moto mods will definitely work with it.

There is no date of release yet but we want to think the date on the clock is a hint. So you might want to mark June 8 on your calendars.
