Motorola launched the Moto Z3 Play yesterday as the first model in the Z3 series. As expected, the Z3 Play comes with support for the existing Moto Mods. Motorola promised the Moto Mods will be supported by three generation of Z series models. The Z3 Play is the third-gen model and maybe the last that will support the existing Moto Mods. 

The Moto Z3 Play comes with a flagship design, wearing a glass body wrapped around the aircraft-grade aluminium fuselage. The glass is the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 both at the front and rear and the device comes as a lightweight phone. This will ensure the Moto mods don’t end up making it too bulky. The device sports a 6-inch Super AMOLED display with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080p and the 18:9 aspect ratio. This gives the display up to 13% more screen area and more pixels than its predecessors. The trimmed bezels mean the fingerprint sensor has to find a new home and Motorola moved it to the right side, just beneath the volume rocker since it can’t be moved to the back because of the Moto Mods. The design looks quite ergonomic and is easy to access. Motorola also left the One Nav solution as a simple gesture-based bar at the bottom of the screen.

The Z3 Play also comes with a new dual camera setup which is a 12MP + 5M combo with the secondary sensor being a depth of field sensor. The camera comes with Google Lens support built in and fun Cinemagraphs. Up at the front, the device packs an 8MP sensor which has a dedicated Portrait mode.

The Motorola Moto Z3 Play gets its firepower from a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor which is an upgrade from the SD 626 found on the Z2 Play. The processor ensures the new model is 30% faster than its predecessor. The phone also comes with Cat12 LTE support at 700mbps. The processor is paired with 4GB of RAM and there is a 32GB and 64GB internal storage which is expandable. Keeping the lights on is a 3000mAh battery. Motorola also threw in some new moto mods including an Alexa smart speaker and the Print Polaroid mod, which lets you print photos straight from your phone on the go. These new mods can be picked up separately but the device comes with a 2000mAh-capacity battery mod bundled with each purchase.

The device comes with a retail price of $499 which is quite pricey for an SD 636 phone but that could be as a result of the battery mod. Even if you are striking this out of your list because of the pricing, you may want to take a closer look at the device before doing that. Lenovo-owned Motorola brand is expected to launch the Moto Z3 Play smartphone this year. The device has popped up online on several leaks showing some details as well as the renders of the device.

The Moto Z3 Play has now been spotted on the website of the US FCC and in the process, the moniker, as well as its dimension, have now been confirmed. Since this is the first official data we are seeing which features the Moto Z3 Play name, we can now confirm that a smartphone that goes by that name is indeed in existence. The device comes with a dimension of 156.23 x 76.7 mm. The FCC schematics also shows the device will have NFC.

The Moto Z3 Play is rumoured to feature a 6-inch display capable of delivering a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2220 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18:9. The phone had earlier made an appearance at FCC confirming the presence of a model number XT-1929, which revealed that it is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor, along with 4GB RAM. The device will also be available in 32Gb and 64GB storage variants.
