Motorola isn’t the fastest when it comes to updating its devices. Quite a number of its phones haven’t gotten the Android Pie update yet save for its Android One phones – the Motorola One and Motorola One Power. The update is now rolling out to the Moto Z3 and it brings more than just a slice of pie.

The update brings all the goodness of Android Pie which includes a redesigned navigation, new volume controls, new emojis, a redesigned settings menu, Adaptive Brightness, Adaptive Battery, temporary screen rotation, and a new way to manage your notifications.

It also brings January’s security update and support for Motorola’s 5G Mod which will work with Verizon’s 5G network. The Moto 5G Mod isn’t yet available for purchase yet but its good to know that you won’t need to wait for an update from Motorola for it to work when you eventually get your hands on a unit.

The notification for the update should hit your device but if you haven’t gotten it, you can go to System Updates under phone settings to check for it.

The Moto Z3 has a 6.01-inch 2160 x 1080 display. It is powered by the Snapdragon 835 which also powers the Moto Z2 Force. The processor is paired with 4GB/6GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB of storage. It has dual 12MP rear cameras and an 8MP front-facing camera. It also has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, a 3000mAh battery and is splash and dust resistant.

When Motorola announced the Moto Z3 we were pretty much disappointed. The phone is practically the Moto Z2 Force with a new and larger display, improved cameras, and a bigger battery. You still get the same Snapdragon 835 processor that powered last year’s flagships, Gorilla Glass 3, and support for Moto Mods.

It appears Motorola had a reason for not releasing a “proper” flagship. There are rumors that this year’s Moto Z series will be the last to have support for Mods as the design language for the series will be changed next year.

The first proof of that change in design is a new wireless charger that has been seen on the website of the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). At the moment, Motorola doesn’t have a phone that supports wireless charging (built-in). However, there are some Moto Style shells that add wireless charging support to the Moto Z series.

We believe the next Motorola flagship will have wireless charging built-in instead of via an aftermarket add-on, hence the reason for making a wireless charger.

The wireless charger was certified yesterday and has model number CHR-0661. It is shaped like a disc like most wireless chargers and comes in black. On top, where your phone will lie, is the Motorola batwing logo and on the side is a LED indicator.

Following the official release of Android 9.0 Pie, manufacturers have been announcing devices that are eligible for the latest version of Android. Today, Motorola released a list of its phones that will get the update.

Motorola says the update will begin rolling out this fall but don’t be surprised if some phones don’t get it until next year. The eligible devices are listed below:

1. Moto Z3
2. Moto Z3 Play
3. Moto Z2 Force
4. Moto Z2 Play
5. Moto X4
6. Moto G6 Plus
7. Moto G6
8. Moto G6 Play

Apart from the Moto Z2 Force, Moto Z2, and Moto X4, no other Motorola phone released in 2017 will get updated to Android 9.0 Pie which is sad. However, we are not surprised.

Motorola has a bad track record when it comes to software support. The V was only updated to Android 8.1 Oreo back in June and the Android 8.1 Oreo soak test for the Moto G5 Plus began at the end of July. The Moto E5 series isn’t getting the update too. We are also not surprised as we already knew this right from when they were announced.

Android 9.0 Pie brings a new navigation system, adaptive brightness, adaptive battery and a number of UI changes.

The low-priced E5 Plus is packed with 5,000mAh battery that can last for up to two days and also it comes with an affordable price tag.

Motorola Z3 Specifications, Features and Pricing

The Motorola Z3 features a very thin splash-resistant chassis that measures only 6.75mm in thickness. It features Gorilla Glass 3 panels on its front and rear sides. It houses a 6.01-inch Super AMOLED screen that produces Full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The Snapdragon 835 SoC fuels the phone with 6 GB of RAM. It has an internal storage of 128 GB and comes with a microSD card slot.

For photography, the Motorola Z3 is equipped with dual 12-megapixel camera hat comes with features like laser autofocus, PDAF, depth focus and dual-tone LED flash. The front-facing of the Z3 is of 8-megapixel. A 3,000mAh battery is present inside the Z3. The Android 8.1 Oreo OS customized with ZUI 4.0 comes preinstalled on the phone.  A fingerprint scanner is fitted on its rear side.

The bottom portion of the back panel of the Motorola Z3 features 16-pin pogo connector for attaching different kinds of Moto Mods accessories. Some of the Moto Mods that are available for the Motorola Z3 include a 5G Moto Mod that will be available by early 2019, an Eye-Hasselblad camera with 10x zoom, a battery pack enabled with Turbo charging, a JBL stereo speaker and insta-share projector.

The Motorola Z3 costs 3,399 Yuan (~$578) and its sales will begin in China from Aug. 16. It will be available in a single color option of black.

Motorola E5 Plus Specifications, Features and Pricing

The Motorola E5 Plus feature a 6-inch IPS LCD screen that supports HD+ resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels. The Snapdragon 430 that includes an octa-core processor that clocks at 1.4 GHz powers the phone. The 32 GB and 64 GB storage variants of the phone include 3 GB and 4 GB of RAM. It is equipped with a microSD card slot.

For photography, the Motorola E5 Plus features a 12-megapixel rear camera with laser focus, PDAF, Electronic Image Stabilizer and dual-tone LED flash. For snapping selfies, it is equipped with an LED enabled front-facing camera of 5-megapixel. The behemoth 5,000mAh battery of the phone carries support for 18W fast charging. It also features a rear-mounted fingerprint reader.

The 32 GB storage + 3 GB RAM edition of the Motorola E5 Plus carries a price tag of 1,299 Yuan (~$187). It can be bought in colors like Monet Gray and Van Gogh Gold. Its 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM variant has a pricing of 1,699 Yuan (~$245) and its color options are Monet Gray and Van Gogh Gold. The sales of the Motorola E5 will begin in China on Aug. 16.

The Chinese market is lead by brands OPPO, Huawei, Vivo and Xiaomi. With today’s launch event that specifically held to announce Motorola phones, it is quite evident that Lenovo is applying dual-brand strategy to gain popularity in the Chinese market. It is interesting to see that Motorola Z3, P30 and E5 Plus that were unveiled today do not carry “Moto” branding.

Lenovo-owned Motorola brand recently launched the Moto Z3 flagship on August 9 in the U.S where it enjoys a loyal fan base. The Chinese company has officially disclosed that it would be bringing home the Moto Z3 to China soon. The device is scheduled to be launched in China on August 15. The smartphone is presently on reservation in China via Jingdong (JD.com) while it will go on sale at 10 AM on August 16.

The company released a promotional video which is a short clip of fans speaking about what they like about the smartphone. Through the official Weibo account, Motorola has today confirmed that it will be holding an unveil event on Aug. 15 at Wuhan, China. The Lenovo-owned company has recently launched the Moto Z3 smartphone in the U.S. It is speculated that the very same smartphone may get introduced in China through the upcoming launch event. In the recent past, the TENAA telecom regulatory agency in China has approved devices likes Motorola One, One Power, Moto Z3 Play and Moto E5 Plus. Hence, it is likely that the Aug. 15 launch event could be used to announce multiple smartphones.

Apart from confirming on the launch date, the poster does not reveal any information on the device(s) that will be announced on Aug. 15. The Moto E5 Plus for China may sport better specs than its international model. Its TENAA listing has revealed improved specs like larger 5,000mAh battery and a higher variant with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage.

The TENAA certifications of Motorola One and One Power phones have revealed that some of their specs will be identical. Both handsets are expected to feature notched screen of 6.18 inches that will support FHD+ resolution of 2246 x 1080 pixels. They are also speculated to feature 1.8 GHz octa-core processor, 16-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera and 8-megapixel front camera. Previous leaks have revealed that these handsets will go official as Android One devices.

Motorola has unveiled its latest flagship device for 2018 – the Moto Z3. The device was announced at an event held Thursday in Chicago, in the United States. The Moto Z3 will be the final flagship in the series for this year as the tech giant hinted that there would be no Z3 Force for the first time since the Moto Z line was introduced. The new model would be released later this month in the U.S as a Verizon exclusive. Also, there is no word on when the model will make its debut in other markets.

Moto Z3 Design & Features

The Moto Z3 is set to become the world’s first 5G phone as the model is 5G-upgradable when Verizon launches its 5G network next year. The model also comes with a 5G Moto mod. In terms of design, the Moto Z3 features a glass body. The device adopts a massive 6-inch AMOLED display with minimal bezels on either side. The design includes Motorola’s signature camera module with dual sensors at the back and since it is glass, the device skips on the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. Instead, the fingerprint sensor is located on the right side of the device just beneath the volume rockers.

In addition, the rear panel houses the pin connector for the Moto Mods. The device is compatible with all previous MotoMods Motorola has up its sleeves as well as the new 5G Moto mods which the device comes with. The 5G Mod is developed in partnership with Verizon and it is equipped with a Snapdragon X50 modem that will allow customers to eventually take advantage of the carrier’s next-generation network.

Specifications

The Moto Z3 could be called a 2018 flagship with 2017 specifications. The model is powered by last year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 flagship chipset and not the Snapdragon 845 introduced this year. The chipset is paired with 4GB of RAM and there is 64GB of internal storage inside.

As for the price, the flagship model will be available for just $480 which is quite affordable except that the processor onboard is outdated. Verizon offers those who switch networks and trade in their own device a $300 trade-in credit meaning eligible owners can get this or just $180. Of course, this pricing doesn’t include the 5G Moto Mod. The price of the Moto Mod is yet to be announced but it won’t be available until the start of 2019. Further, Motorola announced a limited-time offer which will see those who purchase the Moto Z3 buy any Moto Mod that cost over $100 for just $50. The company is yet to release details on the global rollout for the model but we expect it to hit Europe, India and China soon.

An industry insider from China with well-known track record on leaked information on forthcoming phones has shared the list of flagship smartphones that are slated to debut this year.

August

The Meizu 16 series that includes Meizu 16 and Meizu 16 Plus smartphones are expected to go official on Aug. 8. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is slated to go official on Aug. 9. The Smartisan Pro 3 and OPPO R17 are rumored to go official later in this month. The 360 N7 Pro is likely to get announced later in August or September.

September

The LG V40 ThinQ is expected to get unleashed in September. A recent report has revealed that after its unveiling in September, the company release it in the market in early October.

The 2018 iPhones will be also arriving in September. Recent reports have suggested that the two upcoming OLED iPhones may debut as iPhone 9 and iPhone 9 Plus. The company is also expected to announce LCD iPhone in September. However, a recent report has claimed that since the Cupertino company has encountered production issues with the LCD iPhone, it may hit the market by October or early November.

Last year, Xiaomi had launched the Mi MIX 2 on Sept. 11 and on the very next Apple had announced the iPhone X as its first OLED iPhone. Hence, the Mi MIX 3 is pegged to arrive in September this year. However, the leakster has claimed that there is a possibility that the smartphone may get announced in October. A recent report has revealed that it may arrive with improved design.

October

The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL phones are speculated to go official either in September or October. Since the predecessor Google Pixel phones were unveiled in October, it is likely that this year also the company may follow the same launch pattern. The Nubia Z19 and Huawei Mate 20 series that includes Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro are poised to get unveiled by mid-October.

November

By mid-November, OnePlus may announce the OnePlus 6T smartphone. Honor may rival it by launching the Honor V11 smartphone around the same time.

December

360 Mobiles may announce the 360 N8 flagship by mid-December. Honor may introduce the Honor Magic 2 as the successor for Honor Magic that was announced in December 2016. Vivo X22 or Xplay7 is also likely to debut by the end of this year. Could this be the first ever 10 GB RAM phone that is rumored to go official this year?

The leakster has further claimed Apple 12 that powers the forthcoming 2018 iPhones is a 7nm SoC. The 7nm Kirin 980 SoC is expected to fuel Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, Honor V11 and Honor Magic 2 smartphones. Rest of the phones are speculated to feature the 10nm Snapdragon 845 SoC. However, it seems unlikely that the OPPO R17 and Vivo X22 will arrive with SD845 SoC.

Some of the other flagship phones that are not mentioned in the above list include  Nokia 9 or Nokia A1 Plus, Razer Phone 2, Sony Xperia XZ3, Xperia XZ3 Compact and XZ3 Premium. The Moto Z3 is expected to official tomorrow.

Last year, Motorola had sold the Moto Z2 Force Edition in the U.S. through all the major operators. However, the forthcoming Motorola flagship phone will be called Moto Z3. Since the company is said to have entered a fresh agreement with Verizon, the Moto Z3 will be exclusively available through the carrier in the U.S.

With Motorola Moto Z3 smartphone, the company is also expected to officially announce its 5G Moto Mod. Verizon is planning to start its 5G network later this year, it is only then the 5G Moto Mod can become useful. This means that Moto Z3 will become one of the first phones to support 5G network.

Motorola has announced that it has an event scheduled for August 2. However, it has kept mum on what product(s) it will be announcing. Although it does tease us with the statement “a whole new way to connect, stream, download, video chat, and more”. The Moto Z3 and the Moto One Power are the two major devices that are yet to be announced. There is a chance it can be one or even both of them.

The Moto Z3 is the more likely of the two phones to be announced. Its predecessor – the Moto Z2 Force – was announced in July last year, so an early August launch isn’t far off the mark.

For now, the only confirmed spec of the Moto Z3 is a Snapdragon 845 processor. It will most definitely come with the same sized 18:9 display as the Moto Z3 Play but with a higher resolution. It should also pack dual rear cameras and may be announced along with new Moto Mods.

Motorola has launched a new variant of its new mid-ranger Moto Z3 Play in Brazil. It is a higher-end version which will be sold at a higher price and will provide better performance. The new variant differentiates from the ones already in the market by having 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. It joins the other two more affordable variants sporting 3 or 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage.

The new variant also comes in a new color variant: Onyx, that is a dark hue. In Brazil, the new version of the Motorola Moto Z3 Play carries a price tag of BRL 2,699 which roughly translates into $716. Just to remind you, the previous version has a listing price of BRL 2,299, roughly $610. The rest of the specs sheet remains the same, as well as the support to MotoMods.

Motorola Moto Z3 Play features a 6.01-inch display with a Full HD+ resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio. The high memory is supported by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset running at a max frequency of 1.8 GHz. As the main camera, the handset has a dual setup with 12 + 5 MP resolutions. A well-known leakster has claimed that Motorola will be releasing only these phones in this year. This suggests that the company may not launch successor versions of Moto C and C Plus this year.

According to the tipster, the Moto E series phones that will probably include Moto E5, Moto E5 Plus and Moto E5 Play will include basic specs and large battery.  He has also claimed that the Moto E5 Play would be replacing the Moto C series. Earlier today, Droid-life had revealed the leaked renders and key specifications of the Moto G6, Moto G6 Plus and Moto G6 Play smartphones that are speculated to debut as early as next month. The publication has also revealed the renders and some features of the upcoming Motorola Moto Z3 and Moto Z3 Play smartphones.

Last year, Motorola had released two Moto Z series smartphones namely, Moto Z2 Force and Moto Z2 Play. These phones are expected to be replaced by Moto Z3 and Z3 Play, respectively, this year. As it can be seen in the below renders, both the Z3 smartphones feature super-slim bezels. The renders also indicate that these phones will becoming with some changes in their design.

The publication has claimed that a 6-inch display capable of delivering a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2220 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18:9 will be available on the Moto Z3 as well as Moto Z3 Play. The display of the Z3 appears to be slightly curved towards the edges.

The publication has not revealed too many details on the specs of these phones. It claims that apart from Moto Z3 and Z3 Play, there will be a third Moto Z3 smartphone that will be arriving with the most advanced specs compared to the other models. It is likely to feature the Snapdragon 845 chipset and a higher resolution display.

The fingerprint scanner is not visible on the images of the Moto Z3 and Z3 Play. There is a possibility that the company may replace it with facial recognition or it could be embedded under the screen of these phones. Like the rumored Moto E5, the company may embed the fingerprint scanner under the Moto logo on the rear panel of these phones.

The Moto Z3 phones are also going to feature support for Moto Mods accessories like the predecessor phones. The handset shown in the second which could be the Moto Z3 or Z3 Play can be seen sporting a Motorola 5G Moto Mod that will bring 5G capabilities to the phone. It also seems to feature dual front-facing cameras. The publication has also predicted that the 2019 Motorola smartphone such as Moto G7, Moto E6 and Lenovo K9 are likely to feature an iPhone X-like notch.

Motorola’s Z2 series smartphones were unveiled to the world in summer of 2017. Hence, it is likely that the company may announce the three Moto Z3 phones in summer this year.
