Tech site, Digital Trends, reported in their review of the device that the phone manufacturer confirmed that only one major OS update is planned for the 4th-gen Moto Z smartphone. Since it launched with Android Pie, that means it will get updated to Android Q and nothing afterward.

In this age where software support is equally as important as the build quality of your device, it doesn’t make any sense why Motorola has decided to take this decision. What is more confusing is the fact that the Moto Z4 runs a near-stock version of Android, so it shouldn’t be hard to roll out at least two updates.

Motorola does say the Moto Z4 will receive bi-monthly security updates for two years but that isn’t much of a consolation. This news makes it even harder for the Moto Z4 as a device worth buying in a market where it has to compete with the Pixel 3a which will get updates up until 2022.

The Moto Z4 does have its strengths and it even trumps the Pixel 3a in a lot of areas but if software support is very important to you, then you may want to skip this device.

A few days ago, Motorola announced the Moto Z4 and this time it is just a mid-ranger. After that, the company said that there will be no Moto Z4 Force, neither a Moto Z4 Play. So goodbye flagship from the Z series, it seems. The only thing left now is to understand if the new Moto Z4 has a high value for money and, in order to let you know, we will compare it with two best-buys of the actual market: the new Meizu 16Xs and the best-selling Redmi Note 7 Pro by Xiaomi’s sub-brand.

Design

Motorola Moto Z4 wins the build quality awards as it comes with the most solid and premium materials. It has a glass back as well as an aluminum frame, and it is splash and dust resistant as proved by the P2i certification, despite it is not waterproof. It even supports MotoMods: you can stick additional modules on its back thanks to the pins on the lower part of the back cover, including a MotoMod which enables the 5G connectivity! While its build quality is simply amazing, we can not say the same about its look. The glass back of Meizu 16Xs and Redmi Note 7 Pro look a lot more attractive, at least according to my tastes. Meizu 16Xs has also a cleaner back because it features an in-display fingerprint reader, that is why it is my favorite one. Which one do you prefer?

Display

While Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro is equipped with a traditional IPS display, Motorola Moto Z4 and Meizu 16Xs come with much better OLED screens. They provide more brilliant colors and deeper blacks, so I prefer them. Meizu 16Xs has an in-display fingerprint reader but it also comes with a smaller screen, while Motorola Moto Z4 has a bigger panel, a waterdrop notch to reduce the upper bezel and an in-display fingerprint reader as well. Given that both are Full HD OLED displays there are only marginal differences when it comes to display quality.

Specs & Software

The chipset is the component which made us go for this comparison. All of these devices are powered by a Snapdragon 675 SoC by Qualcomm which delivers upper-midrange performances similar to the ones offered by the Snapdragon 710 (slightly better CPU but worse GPU, tough). Motorola Moto Z4 comes with a stock Android version based on Android Pie, but it has only 4 GB of RAM, while Meizu 16Xs and Redmi Note 7 Pro are equipped with up to 6 GB of RAM.

Camera

Motorola Moto Z4 has just a single camera on its rear side, but it may give us several surprises and it may be the best camera phone of the trio despite its rivals come with triple cameras. Its rear sensor has a very bright f/1.7 aperture as well as OIS, unlike its rivals. Most of Motorola phones come with very nice cameras, even in the midrange segment. So we have high expectations for the Moto Z4. It even comes with the best front camera on the paper: a 25 MP snapper with an f/2.0 focal aperture. And you can enhance the camera performances with several MotoMods.

Battery

The battery capacity is the weak point of the Moto Z4 as it comes with just 3600 mAh of capacity, but thanks to the battery pack MotoMod, it can provide the longest battery life. However, MotoMods are sold separately, so if we exclude the additional battery pack, Meizu 16Xs and Redmi Note 7 Pro should come with a way longer battery life. Given its OLED display, Meizu 16Xs might last more on a single charge, but it remains to be seen.

Price

Redmi Note 7 Pro costs €200/$223 in its base variant, Meizu 16Xs starts from €220/$246 and Moto Z4 costs €500/$556. The Moto Z4 is definitely the best and most interesting phone, but Meizu 16Xs has the highest value for money with its OLED display, big battery, in-display fingerprint reader and great cameras.

Sadly, we won’t be seeing any other iteration of the Moto Z4. Motorola has confirmed on Twitter that the Z4 is the only Moto Z device that will be available this year.

Hi Raffi. We will not be announcing additional moto z devices this year.

— Motorola US (@MotorolaUS) May 30, 2019

The company was responding to a fan who wanted to know if the Z4 Force will be coming. The brand then tweeted that there won’t be an additional Moto Z devices this year. Thus, the Z4 Force or Z4 Play won’t be coming. Quite sad. Last year’s model had the Z3 Play but no Z3 Force. The Z2 Force from 2017 was the last model launched.

EDITOR’S PICK: Meizu 16Xs vs Redmi K20 vs Xiaomi Mi 9 SE: Specs Comparison

Since this is coming from Motorola US, it is possible the Z4 Play will be launched in other markets but not in the US. That is just a wild guess, though. One thing we can pick from this is that Motorola is treading carefully now, apparently in order to get effective sales. It seems to be sticking to the low-end and mid-range markets, ditching the high-end market, at least for now. Market data shows the company isn’t doing too badly after emerging from a turbulent financial downturn.

That last one is especially important, seeing as it comes straight from Verizon themselves. That’s right, the Moto Z4 is coming to Verizon, with a 5G Moto Mod in tow.

The Moto Z4’s Geekbench listing shows that it runs a Snapdragon 675 SoC. This will be paired with 4GB of RAM. We can expect to see other RAM configurations later, as well as Android 9.0 P straight out of the box. It’ll also have a 6.4-inch OLED FullVision display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 and a 19:9 aspect ratio. The display is embedded with an in-screen fingerprint sensor.

The selfie notch of the Moto Z4 features a 25-megapixel sensor. The rear side of the phone is fitted with a single camera of 48-megapixel. The buyer of Moto Z4 phone has shared some of the images that were snapped using its rear camera. The device is powered by a 3,500mAh battery that carries support for 15W TurboPower through USB-C. It also comes equipped with wireless charging support.

The Moto Z4 may have already been purchased and received by one lucky customer, but it’s not officially for sale yet. That changes soon. Verizon has announced that the Moto Z4 will go on sale starting June 13th for $499.99. Customers who purchase a 5G Moto Mod will even get free 5G Ultra Wideband service thrown in.

According to Android Authority, there were two listings of the phone. The first one priced at $499 was an Amazon-exclusive edition featuring Alexa assistant and other preloaded apps. The second was an unlocked model that came with a free 360-degree Moto Mod. It also carried a price tag of $499. Both listings have been taken down. The pricing seems to be incorrect for the bundled model. It may carry a slightly price tag once the handset is officially announced and listed on the retailer site.

The Moto Z4 is powered by a 3,500mAh battery that carries support for 15W TurboPower through USB-C. It also equipped wireless charging support. The back panel of the phone has pogo-pin connector for Moto Mod accessories. The unboxing video states that older Moto Mods are compatible with Moto Z4. However, there is some sort of difference in size.

Earlier this year, @OnLeaks had shared renders of Motorola Moto Z4 Play smartphone. In March, a new Motorola phone codenamed as “foles” was approved by Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The same phone is said to be internally codenamed as “stingray.” It was found that the phone is packed with mid-range specs. Earlier this month, Evan Blass shared a render of the Moto Z4 smartphone. Fresh information shared by XDA Developers that Z4 Play renders shared by @OnLeaks could actually belong to the Moto Z4 phone. Hence, it can be said that the Moto Z4 will be arriving as a mid-range phone.

The FCC documents of the “foles” Moto Z4 has a model number of XT1980-3. It is powered by the Snapdragon 675 chipset. It will be arriving with 4 GB or 6 GB of RAM. It may come in UFS 2.1 storage options such as 64 GB and 128 GB. It will be packed with a 3,600mAh battery. FCC reveals that its stock power adapter carries support for 18W fast charging.

The smartphone will be equipped with a single camera on its rear. It will include a 48-megapixel S5KM1SP sensor by Q technology that will be able to capture 12-megapixel shots by default. Fore capturing selfies, the handset will feature 25-megapixel Samsung S5K2X5 sensor.

The FCC filings do not have any information on the size of its display of the Moto Z4 smartphone. The handset measures 157 x 75mm which is similar to the Moto G7 Plus smartphone that comes with a 6.2-inch IPS LCD display with waterdrop notch. Hence, the Moto Z4 is likely to arrive with the same-sized screen. What’s known about Z4’s display is that it will be equipped with Goodix supplied in-display fingerprint reader. The smartphone is expected to come preloaded with Android 9 Pie OS. Lastly, the phone will carry support for Moto Mod accessories.

He had also revealed some other features of the phone such as it will be sporting an IP67 rated chassis and it will be arriving in two models such as 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage and 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage.

The tipster had also revealed that Motorola will be also releasing Moto Z4 Force flagship phone powered by the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform and 8 GB of RAM. It is expected to sport the same display as Moto Z4. The other rumored features of the Z4 Force include 128 GB of native storage, in-display fingerprint scanner, a 3,230mAh battery and a triple camera setup with a 48-megapixel main sensor, a 13-megapixel sensor and a telephoto lens. It could be priced at $650.

The key specs of the phone had appeared in the previous month. Today, reputed tipster and industry expert Evan Blass has shared a new render of the Moto Z4 to reveal its design from all angles.

Moto Z4 Design

The Moto Z4 render reveals that it will be arriving with a waterdrop-type notch screen. The side bezels of the phone are almost non-existent. Slightly thick bezels can be seen on the top and bottom sides of the display.

The left edge of the Moto Z4 is barren. On its right is a volume rocker and a power button. The top edge of the phone has an external speaker, a microphone and a SIM card compartment. Its bottom edge has a microphone, a USB-C port and a 3.5mm audio jack.

A protruding circular housing can be seen on rear shell of the Moto Z4. It seems to feature a laser autofocus unit, a single camera lens and a dual-tone dual LED flash. The Motorola batwing logo is placed below the camera. Towards the bottom is a 16-pin pogo connector for attaching Moto Mods accessories. Probably, it may carry support for 5G Moto Mod apart from other modules. Previous reports have claimed that the Moto Z4 has a splash-resistant body.

Moto Z4 Specifications

The Moto Z4 will be arriving as the successor for the Snapdragon 835 powered Moto Z3 phone from last year. Rumors have it that the Moto Z4 will be arriving with a 6.4-inch OLED screen that will offer full HD+ resolution. The display of the phone could be integrated with an in-screen fingerprint reader.

The Snapdragon 675 mobile platform is expected to power the Moto Z4 handset. The Android 9 Pie OS will come preloaded on the device. The near-stock version of Android will be coupled with exclusive features from Motorola such as Moto Display, Moto Actions and Moto Experiences.

The 48-megapixel rear-mounted camera may support Night Vision which is nothing but enhanced night scene photography. It will be featuring a front-facing camera of 25-megapixel. The front and rear cameras are rumored to support Quad Pixel technology for brighter shots in dim light conditions. The smartphone may also feature AI photography features. Devices such as Moto Z4 Play, Moto Z4, G7, G7 Plus and others are all in the pipeline and would soon launch in Q2 2019. They are also preparing for another mid-range device carrying Samsung processor and punch-hole display. Today, Moto Z4 design surfaced via its first-ever render leak, thanks to 91mobiles for letting us sneak into its familiar design.

As according to these high-quality press renders, the Moto Z4 carries same subtle notch, Moto Mods support and a dew drop display. Unlike Samsung Galaxy S10, Motorola is expected to introduce the same waterdrop-notch on the high-end Moto Z4. The U-shaped design remains Motorola’s best choice for its premium range of smartphones.

Moreover, Moto Z4 bezels on the top and bottom sides have reduced marginally, eliminating room for a “motorola” logo on the front side, and a higher screen-to-body is also on the cards. As predicted, its backside also looks familiar to its predecessors with the same 16 pins Moto Mod connector system. Motorola and Verizon brandings are present on the rear side along with a dual rear camera module and an LED flash.

Apart from design, Moto Z4 will carry Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset for improved performance. Other device specifications are kept under the wraps, but according to reports, it will bring some special camera features.

According to a leak, Motorola focus to launch standard Moto Z4 before the Play variant. Now it will be interesting to see which one arrives first. Although we suggest waiting for the official confirmation before ending up on speculations.

However, it featured Snapdragon 835 SoC from last year. The handset was launched with 5G Moto Mod and was dubbed as the world’s first 5G upgradable smartphone. Fresh information on the 2019 Motorola flagship phone has been shared by XDA Developers. Its report reveals that the handset is codenamed as Motorola Odin and it may hit the market with Moto Z4 moniker.

The publication claims that it has verified the information that it has received on the upcoming Motorola Odin smartphone. The report reveals that the handset will be fueled by Snapdragon 8150 chipset. The base model of the phone is expected to feature 4 GB of RAM and it will include 32 GB of inbuilt storage.

The Android 9 Pie OS will come preinstalled on Motorola Odin. The Lenovo-owned company is rumored to be working on a 5G Moto Mod for the smartphone. There is no confirmation on whether the 2019 Motorola flagship will carry support for existing Moto Mods accessories. The reason behind it is that the company that the existing Moto Mods will be supporting three generations of Moto Z series. The upcoming Moto Z4 device will be the fourth generation device.

The report also revels that the company is working on a software to handle under-screen fingerprint reader. However, the publication claims that its source could not confirm whether the Motorola Odin phone will be equipped with an in-display fingerprint reader.

As mentioned above, the Motorola Odin may release as Moto Z4. Considering the fact that it is being developed in North America, the handset may remain exclusive to Verizon Wireless in the U.S. However, there is possibility that the company may also release an unlocked version of the phone in the U.S. As of this writing, there is no information available on the launch date of the smartphone.

The 5G Moto Mod that was announced for the Moto Z3 smartphone has not been released yet.
