<p>Competition is heating up in the smartphone market. Big players like Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, and others are in a fierce race to outdo each other and grab a larger market share. While even the major companies face challenges, smaller manufacturers find it tough to shine. To stand out, they focus on differentiating factors like durability in their products. However, sometimes, even that isn&#8217;t sufficient. Bullitt Group, the company behind the rugged smartphones of Caterpillar (Cat Phones) and Motorola Defy, is now closing down. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>The End for CAT Phones and Motorola Defy as The Bullitt Group Bankrupt</strong></h2>

<p>Bullitt Group, known for rugged phone brands like CAT and Motorola Defy, has filed for bankruptcy. The British company had been facing challenging times and attempting to undergo restructuring. Despite these efforts, the management declared bankruptcy as a last resort. Many of the company&#8217;s employees have been laid off, and the fate of Bullitt&#8217;s brands and products remains uncertain.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/CAT-Phones-and-Motorola-Defy-Future-Uncertain-as-Bullitt-Group-Declares-Bankruptcy-1024x576.jpg?x10805" alt="Cat Smartphone" class="wp-image-601950" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/CAT-Phones-and-Motorola-Defy-Future-Uncertain-as-Bullitt-Group-Declares-Bankruptcy-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/CAT-Phones-and-Motorola-Defy-Future-Uncertain-as-Bullitt-Group-Declares-Bankruptcy-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/CAT-Phones-and-Motorola-Defy-Future-Uncertain-as-Bullitt-Group-Declares-Bankruptcy-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/CAT-Phones-and-Motorola-Defy-Future-Uncertain-as-Bullitt-Group-Declares-Bankruptcy-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/CAT-Phones-and-Motorola-Defy-Future-Uncertain-as-Bullitt-Group-Declares-Bankruptcy-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/CAT-Phones-and-Motorola-Defy-Future-Uncertain-as-Bullitt-Group-Declares-Bankruptcy-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/CAT-Phones-and-Motorola-Defy-Future-Uncertain-as-Bullitt-Group-Declares-Bankruptcy.jpg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Actually, the financial crisis within the company was no secret. In fact, as I mentioned, a restructuring was in the works. According to the plan, Bullitt would transfer the smartphone department to a new company operated by creditors. Both existing brands like CAT would be assessed, and the necessary funds would be available to focus on the British manufacturer&#8217;s satellite connectivity solutions.</p>

<p>For example, Bullitt introduced the first consumer phone, the CAT S75, capable of satellite messaging without the need for special external hardware before Apple. However, all these plans fell apart. With the bankruptcy decision, the future of initiatives like CAT&#8217;s became uncertain. Yet, it&#8217;s worth noting that bankruptcy may not be the end, and CAT could potentially continue its journey in the smartphone market under a different parent company in the future.</p>

But despite its launch, the phone is still nowhere to be seen in Brazil. Now, the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/motorola-defy">Motorola Defy</a> has been approved by National Telecommunications Agency in Brazil hinting at a sooner launch.</p>
<p>The certification shows a phone with model number XT2083-8 which is nothing but the Motorola Defy rugged smartphone. It has received approval from the Brazilian telecommunication authority confirming its release in the region.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-434559 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Motorola-Defy.jpg?x10805" alt="Motorola Defy" width="626" height="436" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Motorola-Defy.jpg 626w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Motorola-Defy-300x209.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Motorola-Defy-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Motorola-Defy-603x420.jpg 603w" sizes="(max-width: 626px) 100vw, 626px" /></p>
<p>Furthermore, <a href="https://www.tudocelular.com/mercado/noticias/n184378/motorola-defy-e-homologado-na-anatel.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>TudoCelular</em></a> has managed to share some of the phone&#8217;s images which gives us a clear look at the phone. The smartphone has a large display and boasts a triple camera setup with a 48MP main, a 2MP macro, and a 2MP depth. We also get to learn the details of the charging adapter. The adapter here has a 20W fast charging speed.</p>
<p>Other than this, the phone&#8217;s already available in some other European markets. It comes with a 6.5-inch dew-drop notch display with an HD+ resolution. It has Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection which is rare in budget-centric phones.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-395382 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Defy-featured-main.jpg?x10805" alt="Motorola Defy featured main" width="720" height="444" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Defy-featured-main.jpg 720w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Defy-featured-main-300x185.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Defy-featured-main-356x220.jpg 356w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Defy-featured-main-696x429.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Defy-featured-main-681x420.jpg 681w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></p>
<p>The smartphone is powered by the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/snapdragon-662">Qualcomm Snapdragon 662</a> processor with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. It packs a 5,000mAh battery with support for 20W fast charging. The phone comes with a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and runs on Android 10 out of the box.</p>
<p>Since it&#8217;s a rugged phone, it has an IP68 water-resistant rating and can be used in extreme temperatures from +55 degrees celsius to -25 degrees celsius.</p>

<p><strong>Motorola Defy Design</strong></p>
<p>Personally, the Motorola Defy is one of the better-looking rugged phones with its camera layout that fuses seamlessly with the cross-hatching design of the toughened polycarbonate back. True, the bezels are huge but that is not uncommon for rugged phones.</p>
<p>Motorola has also added a lanyard to the bottom corner of the phone and an inscription that reads “Dust. Water. Drop. Proof”. The phone is available in Black and Green.</p>

The name suggests the unannounced smartphone would be a re-enactment of the classic Motorola Defy which was first launched in 2010. The Defy happened to be the first Android phone ever to have water and dustproof capabilities. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Athena-Google-Play-Console.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-393136" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Athena-Google-Play-Console.jpg?x10805" alt="Motrola Defy" width="621" height="748" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Athena-Google-Play-Console.jpg 621w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Athena-Google-Play-Console-249x300.jpg 249w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Athena-Google-Play-Console-349x420.jpg 349w" sizes="(max-width: 621px) 100vw, 621px" /></a></p>
<p>Since the Play Console and GeekBench listing of the Defy, there have been no other details regarding the specs and launch. However, that has changed as popular tipster Ishan Argawal has <a href="https://www.91mobiles.com/hub/motorola-defy-series-relaunch-exclusive/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">reportedly</a> hinted that the Lenovo-owned brand will launch the Defy series soon. This throws up the possibility of the company releasing more than one smartphone. It could also be that we&#8217;ll get to see successive models yearly but this will depend on how the series is received in the market. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Motorola-Athena-Google-Play-Console-Render-.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-369706" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Motorola-Athena-Google-Play-Console-Render-.png?x10805" alt="Motorola-Athena-Google-Play-Console-Render-" width="900" height="560" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Motorola-Athena-Google-Play-Console-Render-.png 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Motorola-Athena-Google-Play-Console-Render--300x187.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Motorola-Athena-Google-Play-Console-Render--768x478.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Motorola-Athena-Google-Play-Console-Render--696x433.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Motorola-Athena-Google-Play-Console-Render--675x420.png 675w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></a></p>
<p>Unfortunately, for fans in India, the Defy series won&#8217;t be meeting with them as the tipster also added that the series will only be launched in markets outside India. However, he failed to mention the markets where the smartphone(s) will be unveiled.</p>
<p>While we are unsure if this news is accurate, it is safe to expect the Motorola Defy any time soon.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Athena-Geekbench.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-393135" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Athena-Geekbench.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="800" height="494" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Athena-Geekbench.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Athena-Geekbench-300x185.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Athena-Geekbench-768x474.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Athena-Geekbench-356x220.jpg 356w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Athena-Geekbench-696x430.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Motorola-Athena-Geekbench-680x420.jpg 680w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></a></p>
<p>As for the expected specifications of the Motorola Defy (Athena), the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/02/05/motorola-athena-defy-with-snapdragon-662-surfaces-at-google-play-console-and-geekbench/">Google Play Console</a> listing shows that the smartphone will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 processor paired with 4GB of RAM. The phone will also run on Android 10 OS and will have a screen with HD+ resolution. The Play Console listing gave us a view of the front screen showing a waterdrop notch on top of the screen. The way the back cover wraps around the screen to create tightly sealed edges also suggests it may equally come with waterproof and dustproof properties. Recall that the original Motorola Defy was water-resistant and dustproof.</p>
<p>We expect more details of this smartphone to emerge a time goes by.</p>

The listing suggests that the smartphone is codenamed as “bathena.” According to a report by <em><a href="https://www.mysmartprice.com/gear/motorola-athena-defy-google-play-console-geekbench/">My Smart Price</a></em>, the same Motorola phone appeared as Athena at the Google Play Console and names like Motorola Defy, bathena, and Athena in the Google Play Console supported devices list. Hence, it appears that the Motorola Athena and Defy are one and the same phone.</p>
<p>On Geekbench (first spotted by <em><a href="https://twitter.com/yabhishekhd/status/1357508467976622080">Abhishek Yadav</a>)</em>, the handset was spotted with 4 GB of RAM and Android 10 OS.  The listing further revealed that it is powered by a Qualcomm processor that has a base frequency of 1.80GHz. The source code of the listing revealed that the SoC has Adreno 610 graphics onboard. It scored 1523 in the single-core and 5727 in the multi-core tests of Geekbench.</p>
