Motorola One Zoom DxOMark Score

With an average DxOMark camera score of 87, the Motorola One Zoom fares better than most other smartphones from the company, including the Moto G7 Plus and the Moto Z2 Force which have average scores of 80 and 82 respectively. Despite the seemingly high scores, all three smartphones are yet to catch up with the market leaders.

However, the One Zoom performs inherently better and is comparable to older Apple and Samsung devices like the iPhone 7 Plus and the Galaxy A50, which have average scores of 88 and 86 respectively. In terms of still photography, the Motorola One Zoom manages to score 92 points. Although it is not close to the benchmark, it offers significant improvement over the Moto G7 Plus.

Editor’s Pick: Motorola Snapdragon 865 flagship and 765 mid-rangers coming 2020

Motorola One Zoom Camera Performance

With the addition of the telephoto lens, the quad-camera setup inherits better optical zoom, slightly better wide-angle shots, exposure, and bokeh. When shooting in well-lit conditions, the exposure seems balanced, while the details are acceptable in both indoor and outdoor locations. However, the images suffer from a significant amount of overshaping on the edges, especially when cropped. Noise levels are also on the higher side compared to other devices in the budget.

The story quickly takes a turn for the worse as we venture into low-light imaging. Exposure immediately takes a hit with limited dynamic range, resulting in an increase of shadow clipping. Backlit wide-angle shots also tend to be underexposed. There is significant scope for improvement in the color department. While white balance is generally not an issue, a slight yellow overshadow is prominent. Motorola has done a great job of color control, although color rendering could have been better. As a result, skin tones often look unnatural in low light images.

Autofocus is inconsistent, and this is evident from the photographs. While the camera is capable of capturing sharp images, a 500ms delay between focus and the final shot is a bit disappointing. Wide-angle shots are acceptable but suffer from underexposure, low detail and color quantization. While the exposure is decent in optimal lighting conditions, the lack of dynamic range with the flash turned off is a serious issue plaguing low-light imaging. The story is consistent with zoom shots. While details are higher in bright conditions, autofocus inconsistencies crop up as the light fades.

Background blur adds a nice touch in portrait mode, although, errors are prominent in the more complex areas. Depth estimation is decent, while artifacts are well-controlled with the primary issue being reduced sharpness and ringing towards the corners. Motorola worked on improving the video quality in terms of autofocus, exposure, and stabilization. While improvements are noticeable in handheld videos when the camera is stable, frameshifts begin to creep up when walking. Noise levels are well-contained when filming indoors, but the details suffer from over-sharpening.

The quad-camera setup with a telephoto lens works in favor of the Motorola One Zoom, as the smartphone offers an attractive proposition for the budget-conscious audience. Well-balanced exposure, decent autofocus, and background blur in portrait mode work in favor of the device. However, serious improvements are required in dynamic range, ultra-wide shots, and color rendering if Motorola plans to take on the leaders with its future lineup.

You would think that every new Android device that launches should support it right out of the box but that isn’t the case. Google has to manually grant support to devices which explains why there are always posts about which devices are now supported.

Apparently, the reason for all devices not having support right out of the box is because Google needs to work with manufacturers to “create a custom calibration profile for each device”. This custom profile is based on the camera configuration of the phone and differs for each phone.

The list gets updated regularly with some devices sometimes showing up even before launch while others are added months after they have been announced. There are also some devices that may never even make

Below is a list of the latest entries on the supported devices list:

If you own one of these devices, Google Play Services for AR should automatically arrive on your device. You can also side-load the APK on to your phone from trusted sources like APKMirror. Once you do that, you can head to the Play Store and download supported apps.

Evan Blass shared a promotional photo earlier today of the Motorola One Pro and as you can see, it has the same design as the Motorola One Zoom.

In a response to Roland Quandt who has been the main source for details on the Motorola Zoom, he said both phones have distinct SKUs and are probably for different markets.

A phone having two different names for different markets isn’t unusual. Several manufacturers including Huawei, HTC, Samsung, and Xiaomi all launch identical phones with different names in different markets.

Now that it has been established that both the Motorola One Zoom and the Motorola One Pro are actually the same phone with different names and software features for different markets, what is left is a release date for both.

When the Motorola One Pro/Motorola One Zoom launches it will come with 48MP quad-rear cameras, a Snapdragon 675 processor, a 6.2-inch FHD+ display with a waterdrop notch, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and a 4000mAh battery.

The source of the new leak is Roland Quandt (@rquandt) and he took to Twitter to share the details. First, he reiterates that the phone is called the Motorola One Zoom and not the Motorola One Pro.

But don’t be deceived by the name, the Motorola One Zoom is not an Android One Phone like the other Motorola phones with “One” in their names. Roland Quandt said the phone will come with a special Amazon Alexa integration (shown in action below).

The phone will have four cameras on the back arranged in a matrix. Below the sensors sits the familiar Motorola Batwing logo which actually lights up. We actually think that is a nice touch to add to the device.

The 48MP quad-camera setup is reported to have dual optical image stabilization. This means one of the other three cameras alongside the 48MP 1.6µm primary sensor has OIS.

It is confirmed that the Motorola One Zoom will be powered by the Snapdragon 675 just like the Redmi Note 7 Pro. It will have 4GB of RAM and 128GB UFS storage with a MicroSD card slot for expansion. There may be other variants too but the above configuration will have a price tag of €399 (~$445).

The source has also provided renders of the phone including one with a purple/violet finish. One of the photos shows the phone has a speaker grille at the top while the opposite side is home to the SIM tray.

Previous reports claimed that it will be debuting as Motorola One Pro. However, a new report from Winfuture.de stated it will be debuting as Motorola One Zoom. In June, press renders surfaced along with the info that the device will launch as the Motorola One Pro. Today, new details have surfaced and the source says the phone is actually the Motorola One Zoom and not the Motorola One Pro.

According to Winfuture.de, the Motorola One Zoom has a 6.2-inch display. The screen has a notch for the front-facing camera but skips the 21:9 aspect ratio of the Motorola One Vision. It is an AMOLED display and there is a fingerprint scanner behind the panel.

[envira-gallery id=”268893″]

The Zoom sports a 48MP camera which uses what is called Quad-Pixel technology. This is most likely the same sensor as that of the Motorola One Vision. This sensor has optical image stabilization (OIS) but it isn’t the only one with image stabilization as a second sensor also has the feature. However, there is no confirmation if it is the telephoto camera or the ultrawide angle camera that is equipped with OIS.

The ultrawide angle camera comes in handy for super wide-angle photography while the telephoto zoom lens provides up to 5x zoom (hybrid). The fourth camera is a depth sensor.

The Motorola One Zoom has a textured power button on the right side of the frame. The volume rocker sits above the power button and there are antenna lines at the top and bottom. It is reported that it also has a 3.5mm audio jack and USB Type-C port. Winfuture.de says one weird feature of the Motorola One Zoom is that while there is a slit for the speaker at the top there is no speaker grille at the bottom.

The height and thickness of the phone are said to hint at a large battery but the capacity is unknown. The Motorola One Zoom will run Android Pie out of the box when it launches after IFA 2019 and will have a €429 price tag. The RAM and storage configuration as well as the processor powering the phone remains unknown.
