Motorola recently unveiled its latest foldable phone, the Razr 50, following the Razr 40 launched in June 2023. Both phones offer foldable displays and a taste of foldable innovation, but how do they stack up against each other? Let’s take a deep dive into their specifications and features to see which Razr might be the better choice for you.

Display

The Razr 50 and Razr 40 share the same internal display size – a large 6.9-inch FHD+ pOLED panel. However, the Razr 50 takes a slight edge in peak brightness, reaching a whopping 2600 nits compared to the Razr 40’s 1400 nits. Both offer vibrant visuals with HDR 10+ support, but the Razr 50 might be a better choice for outdoor use under direct sunlight.

The bigger difference lies in the refresh rate. The Razr 50 boasts a 10-120Hz variable refresh rate, allowing for smoother scrolling and animations when needed, while the Razr 40 offers a fixed 144Hz refresh rate. The variable refresh rate on the Razr 50 can potentially help with battery life as well.

The external display is where things differ significantly. The Razr 50 features a larger 3.6-inch FHD+ pOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, making it more usable for tasks like checking notifications, replying to messages, or even taking quick photos. The Razr 40’s external display is a mere 1.47-inch AMOLED panel with a 60Hz refresh rate, limiting its functionality.

Performance

The Razr 50 takes a different approach under the hood, opting for the MediaTek Dimensity 7300X processor built on a 4nm process. The Razr 40, on the other hand, utilizes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor, also built on a 4nm process.

While benchmark scores are yet to be revealed for the Dimensity 7300X, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is a capable mid-range processor. Both processors should be able to handle everyday tasks and even some light gaming. However, power users who prioritize performance might want to wait for benchmark results before making a decision.

Both phones are available with 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM. However, the Razr 50 offers more storage options, starting at 256GB and going up to 512GB of UFS 2.2 storage for the top model. In comparison, the Razr 40 comes with 128GB or 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage.

Camera

The Razr 50 and Razr 40 share the same 32MP front-facing camera for selfies and video calls. However, the rear camera systems differ slightly.

The Razr 50 boasts a 50MP main sensor with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) alongside a 13MP ultra-wide sensor. The Razr 40 steps down to a 64MP main sensor with OIS and a 13MP ultra-wide sensor. While the megapixel count might seem higher on the Razr 40, the larger sensor size on the Razr 50’s main camera could potentially lead to better low-light performance and image quality.

Battery and Charging

Both phones pack a 4200mAh battery, which is decent for a foldable phone. However, the Razr 50 boasts faster wired charging at 33W compared to the Razr 40’s 33W. The Razr 50 also offers 15W wireless charging, while the Razr 40 is limited to a measly 5W wireless charging speed.

Design and Durability

Both phones utilize a 6000 Series Aviation-grade Aluminum frame and boast an IPX8 water resistance rating, making them both highly durable and water-resistant. The Razr 50 comes in three color options: Moon Velvet Black, Elephant Gray, and Passion Orange. The Razr 40 offers Sage Green, Summer Lilac, and Vanilla Cream color choices.

The Razr 50 features a fifth-generation star track hinge, which Motorola claims is smaller, lighter, and more durable with a reduced crease. While the Razr 40’s hinge has undergone extensive testing, the newer hinge on the Razr 50 might offer a smoother folding experience in the long run.

Software

The Razr 50 comes pre-installed with Android 14, offering the latest features and security updates. The Razr 40 launched with Android 13 but should be upgradable to Android 14 eventually.

Pricing

The Razr 50 starts at 3699 yuan ($509) for the 8GB + 256GB model, while the Razr 40 was launched at 3999 yuan ($550) for the 8GB + 128GB model. The pricing of the Razr 50 makes it a more attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

Conclusion

In late July, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra received a major software update with a lot of changes in China. A month later, the vanilla Motorola Razr 40 is getting a similar treatment in the region.

The fresh system update for the device arrives with tons of fixes and optimizations. It also bumps up the security patch level.

This update is officially called ‘OTA2’. In other words, it is the second big software update for the clamshell foldable since its release. Let’s go through the changes.

As per the official changelog, the new system update for the Motorola Razr 40 comes with August 2023 security patches. Further, it arrives with an updated version of almost all the system apps, including Calendar, Clock, Moto Display, launcher, and others.

The latest software update also brings optimizations for real-time subtitles, face authentication, power consumption, cover screen brightness, network, gaming, camera, and more. It even fixes compatibility issues with certain third-party applications 

Unfortunately, the update does not introduce any new features, except for one. It adds a new clock style for the cover screen called ‘light shuttle.’

Last but not least, the OTA system update comes with firmware version T2TV33.45-69-2. Though the update has started rolling out, it may take some time to reach all the units.

As for the global variant of the device, Motorola hasn’t revealed anything about a similar software update. So we are not sure if and when it will receive the aforementioned update.

Motorola’s foldable phone may not be the best, but the price is very low. As you guys know, this time the Razr 40 has once again set a record for the lowest price of a foldable phone. In China, its lowest price is only about $560, which is about the same price as a normal sub-flagship phone. I’m sure there are already some people who are excited to click into this video to see if the Razr 40 Standard Edition is worth buying, right? This video will give you the answer.

Unboxing

While there is a big difference in price, the accessories they have are almost the same. They both have 33W chargers. The manual, warranty card, and SIM pin. The only difference is that the Ultra version has a free case, while the standard version does not.

Design

Good design is very important for a foldable phone, and Moto understands this very well. Although the Razr 40 is cheap, it didn’t take a step back in terms of design. All three colors are made of vegan leather with a frosted metal frame. It looks better than the black 40 Ultra. When they are folded, the outer screen on the Ultra version doesn’t look as good as the standard version if it’s not lit up.

There is one thing that the standard version does better than the Ultra, the SIM slot can finally hold two SIM cards instead of eSIM. but there is one thing that they both don’t do well, it’s USB 2.0 on both phones. They all support standing at any angle, and there is no difference in functionality. whatever the Ultra version can do, the standard version can do as well. Just from the design point of view, I think the standard version does a very good job, even better than the Ultra version.

Display

Compared to the Razr 40 Ultra, the external screen on the standard version is really small, like those old foldable phones released two or three years ago. This small 1.5-inch screen can only display the most basic information, so there’s no way to reply to messages like the Ultra, let alone open some apps.

The internal screen of these two phones has a much smaller gap in user experience compared to the external screen. The screen panel on both phones is actually the same, both are 6.9-inch FHD+ OLED screens, and both support DC dimming as well, maximum brightness is 1,400 nits. But It’s clear that Motorola wants the Ultra to be a step up over the standard version because the refresh rate is higher on the Ultra and the bezels are narrower. So the 40 Ultra will look better in theory, but the difference is so small that you can’t tell who’s better in everyday use.

So my recommendation is, If you’re the type of person who uses your phone less frequently, the Ultra version should suit you better because you can do a lot of things with the outer screen. But if you tend to use it unfolded like me, the standard version should be about the same experience as the Ultra.

Performance & Gaming

Besides the external screen being downgraded, the performance of the Razr 40 isn’t that powerful either. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 in the Razr 40 can hardly be called a good processor, and is just as notorious as the Snapdragon 888 and 8 Gen 1. The peak performance looks good but the long-term performance output is poor because it tends to heat up. The scores on many benchmarks are really bad compared to the 8+ Gen 1 on the Ultra.

That’s probably the main reason why a lot of people don’t want to buy the standard version. I can understand that, but is the Razr 40 Ultra really much better than the standard version in gaming?

So looking at the frame rate graph or the thermal imaging photos, the difference between them in the Genshin Impact isn’t as big as the scores. Their frame rates are all locked at 30fps due to heat control. As a result, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 didn’t really do it more favors than the 7 Gen 1. What a waste of this chipset… Apart from the fact that the standard version fluctuates a little bit more during battles, it’s hard to believe that the gaming performance of these two phones is actually about the same.

So you might ask, how come that the two processors are so different, while the gaming performance is so similar? As you can see from the stress test and the thermal image, the Ultra’s performance is clearly being limited intentionally to keep the body temperatures lower. These two phones have completely blown out my mind. I don’t know if I should be happy for the standard version users or sad for the Ultra users.

Camera

It’s not just the games, even the camera on the standard version is better than I expected. I mean, it takes about the same level of photos as the Razr 40 Ultra with a less competitive sensor. Without the watermark, you shouldn’t be able to tell which photo was taken by the Standard Edition. Most of the time the photos taken are very similar, both in a more colorful style.

Of course, if you were to zoom in to get a closer look, they’re still a little different. It’s hard to tell, but it’s true that the Ultra’s dynamic range is a little better. The Ultra Wide Angle camera on the standard version has a bit wider field of view. However, there is more sharpening on the Standard version and the fur looks more natural on the Ultra. Due to the higher amount of pixels, the standard version can get sharper photos when shooting far away, but the Ultra has less noise in darker areas thanks to its larger sensor.

Overall, they have their merits, but the difference is not huge. In my point of view, they are in a class of their own, both are pretty good.

Video recording on the standard version is much worse than it on the Ultra. The main camera, apart from not supporting 4K 60fps, has a clearly inferior stabilization algorithm than the Ultra. This should be a result of limited processor performance, we get the same result even switching to the Ultra Wide Angle Camera. And this camera performs even worse, sometimes it would go in and out of focus, and that just ruins the footage.

Battery & Charging

The Razr 40 has a larger battery than the Ultra version. However, due to the poor performance of the 7 Gen 1, the battery life is actually not as good as the Ultra version. This is one of the reasons why the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is the favorite of many people.

The wired charging power is the same 30w for both of them, and the charging speed is of course about the same. The time required for a full charge is around an hour. Both support 8w wireless charging as well, and I’m glad that even on the standard version this feature is still there.

Conclusion

When I finished the script for this review video, I realized that the Razr 40 Standard isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. It’s on par with the Ultra version in terms of photography, hinge, internal screen, charging, and design. Even if you spend the extra money to get the Ultra version, there isn’t much of an improvement in performance. The size of the external screen really doesn’t matter much to me, so I certainly prefer the standard version over the 40 Ultra.

I wouldn’t make it my main phone though because the gaming experience on both phones is so bad, but I would recommend it to those people who are obsessed with foldable phones and don’t play large 3D games. Finally, there is a cheap option for you.

The Razr 40 is currently the most affordable foldable smartphone in the world. On the other hand, the Razr 40 Ultra offers the largest cover screen on a clamshell foldable to date.

These devices stand out from their competitors due to the specialties mentioned above. Truly speaking, the Galaxy Z Fflip 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 4 are the only challengers to them as most others are limited to China.

But it is worth noting that a few days from now, Samsung will be unveiling the Galaxy Z Flip 5. The South Korean company’s next-gen clamshell foldable is also expected to sport a giant cover screen.

So the question arises whether you should buy any of the Motorola Razr 40 series smartphones or simply go with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip models. We try to answer this question.

Is Motorola Razr 40 worth buying?

The Motorola Razr 40 series consists of two models, namely Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra.

The Razr 40 is the most affordable foldable smartphone that you can buy. The device starts at ¥3,999, ₹59,999, and €799 in China, India, and Europe, respectively. It retails at around the same price in other markets as well.

For this price, it comes with specs that match a regular mid-range slab smartphone. But the highlight is that it can fold. Thus, the handset takes up less space in your pocket, purse, or bag.

Clamshell foldables are today’s compact smartphones. Due to space constraints, they are not as good as the normal smartphones in the specs department.

But the Razr 40 is super aggressive, just like the Chinese competitors Oppo Find N2 Flip and Vivo X Fold. It has one of the largest batteries and supports both wired as well as wireless charging.

Yes, it is run by a less powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC. But since the chip does not need more power, the phone can last longer.

Further, clamshell foldables are well suitable for those who want to bring down their screen time. The Razr 40 helps a lot in this regard as it has one of the tiniest cover displays.

On the other hand, the Razr 40 Ultra has the largest cover screen on any clamshell foldable phone. Motorola lets you do almost everything on this display. Hence, you don’t even need to unfold the main screen. It also houses a much more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip.

The Razr 40 and the Razr 40 Ultra are the only clamshell foldable smartphones that run software that is closer to stock Android. So if you are one of those stock Android loyalists, these are the sole options you have got.

As for pricing, the Razr 40 Ultra starts at ¥5,699, ₹89,999, and €1,199 in China, India, and Europe, respectively. It is costlier than the Galaxy Z Flip 4 in most markets.

Why you shouldn’t buy Motorola Razr 40?

There are a few reasons why you should not buy Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra.

First and foremost, these handsets are not as water resistant as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip models. They only come with minor splash resistance.

Secondly, stock Android is not for everyone. Also, Motorola only guarantees 3 Android updates and 4 years of security updates as opposed to 4 Android upgrades and 5 years of security patches by Samsung.

Further, though Motorola was the first to announce a commercial clamshell foldable phone, it lags behind Samsung in terms of both availability and after-sales service. 

Finally, older-gen Galaxy Z Flip models are sold at heavily discounted prices after the launch of a new-gen model. For instance, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is currently being sold at a cheaper price than the Razr 40 itself.

Previous-gen models definitely lack new features and upgrades but when you can get them at a more affordable price than a budget foldable, they are more preferable.

Motorola just announced its two latest clamshell foldables in India, after launching them in China last month. Of the two foldables, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is the more premium phone. It has a large 3.6-inch cover display and is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. The Razr 40 is more affordable, and it packs the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor. Here are their pricing and specifications.

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra

The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is a more premium offering in the series and the company is pitting it against the likes of Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Oppo Find N2 Flip. The smartphone brings a 6.79-inch main pOLED display with an FHD+ resolution, a 165Hz refresh rate, 1,400 nits peak brightness, and support for HDR10+. The major highlight of the smartphone is its large 3.6-inch cover display, which practically lets you do everything you do on the main screen. The secondary display is limited to a 144Hz refresh rate and gets Gorilla Glass 7 protection. 

The hinge on the foldable is supposed to let it fold flat without any gap. The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra features a 12MP OIS-enabled main sensor paired with a 13MP ultra-wide and macro lens on the rear. For selfies, you get a 32MP shooter on the front.

As mentioned, the device gets the older but capable Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, paired with up to 12GB RAM and 512GB onboard storage. It packs a 3,800mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging. The device runs Android 13 (a cleaner near-stock version) and features an IP52 splash-resistance rating. The smartphone offers 5G, WiFi-6E, Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C port, and NFC.

Motorola Razr 40

Moto Razr 40 features the same 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED screen with FHD+ resolution but with a lower 144Hz refresh rate. Also, the cover screen is much smaller on the vanilla model, measuring 1.5 inches (194 x 368 pixels).  The device, however, gets the IP52 water-repellent rating of the Razr 40 Ultra.

For clicking pictures, there’s a 64MP main camera with OIS alongside a 13MP ultrawide sensor. The front-facing sensor is the same 32MP one. The Motorola Razr 40 is powered by a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor, accompanied by up to 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. The flip phone is fueled by a larger 4,200mAh battery unit with support for 30W wired and 8W wireless charging.

Pricing and availability

Motorola Razr 40 will start in India at ₹89,999 (around $1,100), while the vanilla Razr 40 will cost you ₹59,999 ($750). Notably, you can also avail up to ₹7,000 Instant Discount/Cashback with specific bank offers, bringing the effective price of the devices to ₹82,999 and ₹54,999, respectively. Both phones will be available for purchase in India through Amazon. Motorola will start shipping the devices on July 15, and pre-orders are live on Amazon as of writing this.

So it’s not surprising that most of these brands are Chinese, such as iQOO, Red Magic, Honor, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Ralme, and Infinix. Anyways, we will also new devices from non-Chinese brands, like Samsung, Motorola, and Nothing.

Upcoming Smartphones in July 2023

Motorola Razr 40 Series

Motorola unveiled the Razr 40 series in early June. These clamshell foldables are on sale in multiple countries for quite a while. They will be debuting in India on July 3.

The lineup includes two products, namely Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra. The former is currently the most affordable foldable smartphone on the market. While the latter has the largest cover screen.

As per an accidental promo by Amazon, the Razr 40 Ultra could start at ₹59,999 in India. This price tag may be inclusive of offers.

iQOO Neo 7 Pro

The iQOO Neo 7 Pro is scheduled to launch in India on July 4. As the name suggests, it will be a better version of iQOO Neo 7 from earlier this year.

As per teasers and leaks, the device will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip, an OIS-assisted 50MP Samsung ISOCELL GN5 primary camera, a 5,000mAh battery, and 120W fast-wired charging support.

The handset is expected to arrive in 8GB + 128GB and 12GB + 256GB memory configurations. It may cost around ₹33,999 inclusive of offers.

iQOO 11S

The iQOO 11S will make its debut in China on July 4. It is a mid-year refresh for the iQOO 11 released earlier this year.

The handset will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip paired with LPDDR5x RAM and UFS 4.0 storage. It will be fitted with a 2K 144Hz Samsung E6 AMOLED display with up to 1800 nits of peak brightness level.

The device will feature an OIS-assisted 50MP Sony IMX866 main camera. Lastly, it will draw energy from a 4,700mAh battery and support 200W fast wired charging.

Red Magic 8S Pro

The Red Magic 8S Pro is set to launch in China on July 5. It will go official as the world’s first 24GB RAM smartphone.

The phone will be powered by an overclocked version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 2 chipset. It will be offered in regular and transparent back options, like its predecessors.

The device will come equipped with an obstruction-free display, courtesy of an under-display camera. Finally, it will be backed by a 6,000mAh battery with support for 165W fast wired charging support.

Honor X50

The Honor X50 will be launched in China on July 5. The handset will be almost similar to its predecessor Honor X40.

It is tipped to house a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 SoC inside. While the brand has officially confirmed that it will be backed by a 5,800mAh battery.

Other expected features include a 1.5K curved OLED display with high-frequency PWM dimming and a 100MP primary camera. Lastly, it is said to carry support for 35W fast wired charging.

OnePlus Nord 3 and Nord CE 3

The OnePlus Nord 3 and OnePlus Nord CE 3 are scheduled to go official in India and other global markets on July 5. The former is a rebranded OnePlus Ace 2V, while the latter is a new product.

The Nord CE 3 is expected to arrive with a 6.72-inch 120Hz FHD+ AMOLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 782G SoC, a 50MP main camera, a 16MP front-facing camera, a 5,000mAh battery, and 80W fast wired charging support.

As their names suggest, the Nord 3 and Nord CE 3 will succeed the Nord 2T and Nord CE 2. However, it’s not known whether their predecessors will be discontinued.

Oppo Reno 10 Series

The Oppo Reno 10 series is expected to release in multiple international markets in July. It will be first announced in Malaysia on July 6.

Just like in China, the global version of the lineup is expected to include three devices. However, the vanilla and pro models will be slightly different from the originals. But the Pro Plus is said to be the same.

All three phones will come with a zoom camera. The Pro Plus will even feature a periscope lens. Finally, they will sport the same design and a curved OLED display.

Realme Narzo 60 Series

The Realme Narzo 60 series is planned to launch in India on July 6. The lineup consists of two handsets, namely Realme Narzo 60 and Realme Narzo 60 Pro.

Both these products are rebranded versions of existing Realme number series smartphones. The vanilla model is a rebadged Realme 11, while the pro variant is a renamed Realme 11 Pro.

It is worth noting that the Realme 11 Pro is already available in India under its original name. However, the standard model is yet to debut in the region. The series is expected to start from ₹17,999 inclusive of offers.

Honor 90

The Honor 90 will be unveiled for global markets on July 6. The global variant of the device is the same as the original Chinese version.

It is tipped to cost £449.99 for the base 8GB + 256GB memory configuration. The product will be also offered in a higher 12GB + 512GB memory variant.

The phone arrives with a 6.7-inch 120Hz OLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset, a 200MP primary camera, a 5,000mAh battery, and 66W fast-wired charging support.

Samsung Galaxy M34

The Samsung Galaxy M34 will go official in India on July 7. It is expected to be a watered-down version of Galaxy A34.

Official teasers have revealed that the smartphone will come with a 6.5-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, an OIS-assisted 50MP rear camera, a 16MP selfie camera, and a 6,000mAh battery. It will have the new universal design adopted by Samsung for its handsets.

Last but not least, the device is expected to house an Exynos 1280 SoC underneath it.

Nothing Phone 2

The Nothing Phone 2 will be made official on July 11. It will be announced in India and Europe.

As per teasers, the smartphone may retain the design of its forerunner with some tweaks. However, it will be more powerful, thanks to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip under its hood.

Other expected specs of the product include a centered punch-hole OLED display, Glyph interface, LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, and a 4,700mAh battery.

Honor Magic V2

The Honor Magic V2 horizontal foldable smartphone is confirmed to go official on July 12. Interestingly, though we are only a few days away from the announcement, not much is known about this product.

Rumors suggest that there will be two variants featuring a custom 2K LTPO display. The regular model will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset, while the  Ultimate edition will house a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC.

Oppo A78 4G and Oppo K11

Oppo is expected to unveil Oppo A78 4G and Oppo K11 in the next few days. As per leaks, the former is a 4GB variant of Oppo A78 5G, while the latter is the Chinese version of the OnePlus Nord CE 3.

The Oppo A78 4G is tipped to arrive with a 6.43-inch 90Hz OLED display, dual stereo speakers, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chip, a 50MP rear camera, a 5,000mAh battery, and 67W fast wired charging support.

On the other hand, the Oppo K11 is expected to come with the same specs as Nord CE 3 discussed earlier.

Vivo V29 Series and Vivo Y27 5G

The Vivo V29 series and Vivo Y27 5G are anticipated to release in July. The former is a tweaked version of the Vivo S17 series for international markets, whereas the latter is a budget 5G smartphone.

The Vivo Y27 5G is expected to arrive with a 6.64-inch 90Hz FHD+ display (LCD), a 50MP main camera, a 16MP selfie camera, a 5,000mAh battery, and 44W fast-wired charging support. Essentially, it is said to be a rebranded Vivo Y36 5G.

Whereas, the Vivo V29 lineup will include Vivo V29 and Vivo V29 Pro. The vanilla model will likely be similar to the Vivo S17, while the pro model will differ from S17 Pro.

Infinix Zero 30 5G

The Infinix Zero 30 5G might be unveiled in July. As of now, not much is known about this phone.

It is expected to feature a MediaTek Dimensity 8020 chipset and Bluetooth 5.3. It will succeed Infinix Zero 20, which is a 4G-only smartphone.

The highest-end model comes with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, priced at 4,699 Yuan (~$654). It comes in the following color choices for the Chinese market: Azure Gray, Bright Moon White, and Sakura Powder.

They feature a 6.9-inch internal screen with a 165Hz and 144Hz refresh rate on vanilla and ultra models respectively. There is a 32MP selfie snapper. The Razr 40 Ultra has a large secondary 3.6-inch OLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate whereas the standard variant has a 1.5-inch small secondary screen.  There are also differences between the ultra and standard models in the camera department with the former having a 12MP main sensor and the later featuring a 64MP primary lens. 

Internally, the Razr 40 Ultra is powered by a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 whereas the Razr 40 is equipped with a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. Both phones support 33W fast charging and wireless charging. The Ultra is backed by a 3,800mAh battery unit whereas the standard variant is fuelled by a 4,200mAh cell.

But on the plus side, this model arrives with a larger 4,200mAh battery and a cheaper price tag.

Motorola is set to unveil the Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra flip phones today, June 1, catering to the global market. Prior to the official announcement, significant details regarding the flagship Razr 40 Ultra have already surfaced through various rumors, encompassing specifications, features, and pricing. On the other hand, limited information is available regarding the standard Razr 40, with only a few details emerging from its appearances in 3C certification and Geekbench. Just hours before the official unveiling, tipster Sudhanshu Ambhore leaked full specifications and renders of the Razr 40.

Motorola Razr 40 specifications (rumored)

As per the leak, the Motorola Razr 40 will measure 170.82 x 88.24 x 7.35mm in the unfolded state and weigh 188.6 grams. The device will have 170.82 x 73.95 x 15.8mm dimensions in the folded state. It houses a 6.9-inch foldable OLED panel like the Razr 40 Ultra. The screen offers a Full HD+ resolution of 2640 x 1080 pixels, a 144Hz refresh rate, 413 ppi pixel density, 10-bit colors, HDR10+, and Gorilla Glass 7.

The back panel of the Motorola Razr 40 will feature a smaller 1.47-inch cover screen. It will be an OLED panel that offers 194 x 368 pixels resolution. The cover display will be accompanied by a 64-megapixel main camera with OIS support and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens. On the front, it will have a 32-megapixel selfie camera.

The Razr 40 will be equipped with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset. As per the Geekbench listing of the device, it may feature 12 GB of RAM, which in turn suggests that it could be equipped with up to 256 GB of RAM. It will run on My UX-based Android 13.

The Razr 40 Ultra will feature the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset and a 3,800mAh battery. The Razr 40 has a comparatively weaker chip and a bigger 4,200mAh battery. The vanilla model will support 30W wired charging and 5W wireless charging. It will be equipped with other features, such as a side-facing fingerprint sensor, dual stereo speakers, dual SIM, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, a USB-C port, and an IP52-rated chassis. The leaked renders released by the tipster show the device will be available in purple, green, and beige shades.

Smartphone launches are expected to slow down in June 2023. After two months of busy releases, it will be comparatively calmer for a while.

As of writing this article, only a few brands have officially confirmed to debut new phones. These companies are Motorola and Samsung to name a couple.

Though we have multiple other handsets from different brands on the list, these are based on leaks and rumors. So they may or may not launch in June.

Anyways, only one of them will be a premium device. However, two foldables are expected. Most of the remaining phones belong to either mid-range or affordable premium categories.

Almost all the handsets on the list will release in global markets. Some of them went official in China recently.

In other words, there won’t be any China-exclusive debut like in May, With that out of the way, let’s take all the devices expected to get announced in the coming days.

Motorola Razr 40 Series

The Motorola Razr 40 series is scheduled to launch on June 1. The lineup is expected to include two clamshell foldable phones, namely Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra.

The ultra will come with a larger 3.5-inch cover screen, while the vanilla model will sport a Galaxy Z Flip 4-esque tiny cover display. Further, the former will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip compared to a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC inside the latter.

The Razr 40 Ultra is also tipped to arrive with a 6.9-inch main foldable display, a 12MP (wide) + 13MP (ultra-wide) dual camera system, a 32MP selfie camera, a 3,800mAh battery, and 33W fast charging support.

Samsung Galaxy F54

The Samsung Galaxy F54 is set to launch in India on June 6. It will most likely be rebranded Galaxy M54.

The device is tipped to arrive with a 120Hz Super AMOLED display and an Exynos 1380 chip. It will sport a 108MP primary camera paired with an 8MP ultra-wide unit and a 2MP macro snapper.

The phone will be backed by a 6,000mAh battery with support for 25W charging. Finally, it is rumored to cost about ₹30,000.

Realme 11 Pro Series

The Realme 11 Pro series is tipped to launch in India on June 8. There will be two handsets, namely Realme 11 Pro and Realme 11 Pro Plus. Both of them went official in China in early May.

The pro plus comes with a leather back, a Dimensity 7050 SoC, a 200MP primary camera, and a 120Hz curved 10-bit curved OLED display. It is backed by a 5,000mAh battery with support for 100W fast charging support.

On the other hand, the pro variant retains most of the features of the pro plus but arrives with a 100MP main camera and supports slower 67W charging.

Vivo V29 Series

The Vivo V29 series is anticipated to release in the coming days in Southeast Asia. It will be rebranded Vivo S17 series.

The lineup is expected to consist of two models, such as Vivo V29 and Vivo V29 Pro. Both of them will sport an FHD+ 120Hz curved OLED display and a 50MP Sony IMX766V primary camera.

The vanilla version will be powered by a Snapdragon 782G chipset as opposed to a Dimensity 8050 inside the pro. The latter will also come with an additional 12MP telephoto camera and support faster 80W charging.

Xiaomi 13 Ultra

The Xiaomi 13 Ultra is anticipated to go official in select global markets in the coming days. Since the handset is on sale in China for a while, we know everything about it.

The most-premium slab smartphone from Xiaomi offers a Leica-powered camera system featuring a 50MP 1-inch Sony IMX989 main camera, a 50MP 3.2x telephoto snapper, a 50MP 5x periscope shooter, and a 50MP ultra-wide unit. On the front, it has a 32MP selfie camera.

The device arrives with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, a QHD+ 120Hz LTPO OLED display, a leather back, an IP68 rating, a 5,000mAh battery, 90W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and 10W reverse wireless charging.

Redmi 12

The Redmi 12 may debut in a few days from now. It will be a budget smartphone powered by a MediaTek Helio G88 chipset. It is said to sport a 6.79-inch FHD+ display (LCD) with a 90Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

The phone is anticipated to house a triple camera system on the rear comprising a 50MP main sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide unit, and a 2MP macro snapper.  It will offer a fingerprint sensor, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and dual stereo speakers.

Interestingly, it will boot outdated Android 12-based MIUI 13 and draw energy from a 5,000mAh battery with support for 18W charging.

OnePlus Nord 3

The OnePlus Nord 3 is rumored to release in India in June. It is expected to be a rebranded version of the OnePlus Ace 2V.

Thus, the handset will come with a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chipset and a 1.5K 120Hz OLED display. It will house a 5,000mAh battery and carry support for 80W wired charging.

The device will flaunt a 64MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide unit, a 2MP macro snapper, a 16MP selfie camera, dual stereo speakers, and an in-screen fingerprint sensor.

Oppo Reno 10 Series

The Oppo Reno 10 series is tipped to launch in India in June at the earliest. All three variants, such as Oppo Reno 10, Oppo Reno 10 Pro, and Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus are anticipated to debut in the country.

All three smartphones sport a 120Hz curved OLED display but are powered by different chipsets. The vanilla, pro, and pro plus house Snapdragon 778G, Dimensity 8200, and Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chips, respectively.

All of them provide a proper three-lens camera system featuring wide, ultra-wide, and zoom units. Finally, the vanilla model supports 80W charging, while the remaining two can charge at the rate of 100W.

Motorola is conducting an event on June 1st. The Lenovo-owned brand has not explicitly revealed what it plans to launch but the teaser shared by the company hints at two foldable phones. The Twitter teaser says ‘Flip the script’ and a closer look at the video shows two devices folding inwards. As per multiple leaks and rumors, the upcoming offerings are expected to be Razr 40 Ultra and Razr 40 with the latter being the more affordable version among the two. Read on to know everything we know about the Motorola Razr 40 series. 

Motorola Razr 40 series design

The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and Razr 40 will be clamshell folding phones. The Lenovo-owned brand has already confirmed that the Razro 40 Ultra will come with a large secondary display. Meanwhile, leaked renders of the standard Razr 40 revealed a small horizontal display similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 4. Both foldable phones have two camera sensors at the top left corner and the power and volume rocker buttons at the right side. 

The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and Razr 40 will feature a side-mounted fingerprint scanner embedded in the power button. The former is expected to come in Viva Magenta, Glacier Blue, and Black colors whereas the latter will be offered in olive green, purple, and cream shades.

A retailer listing (now deleted) of the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra mentioned that it would come with a 6.9-inch pOLED display bearing a center-aligned punch-hole cutout. The secondary display is said to measure 3.5 inches. The device is also teased to come with a higher refresh rate. Meanwhile, the Motorola Razr 40’s display details remain unknown apart from a centrally placed punch-hole cutout on the primary screen. 

On the optics front, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra’s dual camera setup is tipped to comprise 32MP and 8MP sensors. On the front, it will have a 13MP snapper. The standard variant’s camera info remains unclear. 

Motorola Razr 40 series hardware

As per the retailer listing, under the hood, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra will reportedly be powered by a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC coupled with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage It will be backed by a 3,800mAh battery unit with support for wireless charging. On the other hand, the Motorola Razr 40’s Geekbench appearance revealed a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset paired with 12GB RAM. It’s 3C certification listing mentioned support for 33W fast charging. 

The upcoming Razr 40 duo will ship with Android 13 OS out of the box.

The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is tipped to cost SR 3,999 as per the Saudi Arabia retailer site. Another report states that the device may be priced between EUR 1,169 and EUR 1,199. We will know the official details about the Razr 40 Ultra and Razr 40 next week.

On June 1, Motorola will announce the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, a clamshell phone packed with flagship specifications. Some reports have claimed that the company also plans to launch the Motorola Razr 40 alongside the Ultra model. Several reports have already leaked the specifications of the Ultra model, but none have revealed anything about the vanilla model. However, the images of the phone that appeared earlier this month confirmed that it would be a toned-down version of the Ultra variant. Ahead of the expected launch, its details have seemingly surfaced through Geekbench and 3C listings.

As can be seen in the images, a new Motorola phone with model number XT2323-3 has emerged in the databases of Geekbench and China’s 3C certification platform. It is speculated that this device could be the upcoming Motorola Razr 40. These listings have revealed the first details on the specs of the device.

As per the Geekbench listing, the Motorola Razr 40 will come equipped with a Qualcomm chip. The CPU and GPU (through source code) details that have emerged through the Geekbench appearance reveal that the Razr 40 will be powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset and 12 GB of RAM.

The device can be seen running on Android 13 OS. In the single-core test of Geekbench, it scored 1019 points and 2545 points in the multi-core test. The above image, which gives a look at its 3C listing, reveals that the device may support 33W fast charging.

The images of the Razr 40 that surfaced earlier this month revealed that its design will be similar to its Ultra sibling. However, the difference is that the vanilla model will have a smaller cover screen. The leaked renders also revealed that it will come in purple, olive green, and cream shades.

A new leak has just revealed some key details regarding the highly anticipated Motorola Razr 40 Ultra foldable smartphone. This latest leak shares renders of the upcoming device as well as reveal its pricing and specifications. So let’s have a look.

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra may launch for around $1,000

Talking about the design first, we have already covered leaked official images and even renders in the past. However, the latest leak now arrives from 91Mobiles and it confirms what we have already seen in the past. The Moto Razr 40 Ultra features a clamshell folding design similar to its other Razr series predecessors but with a larger cover display on the back. This external panel almost completely covers one half of the rear panel, with the two rear cameras also being housed alongside it.

Meanwhile, the primary display houses a punch hole selfie camera at the top. Thanks to a larger cover screen, users will be able to better take selfies when using just the rear cameras. Furthermore, the renders also show that the smartphone will be available in three color options namely Black, Blue, and Red. The leak further adds that the Razr 40 Ultra will reportedly cost around 1,000 US Dollars. Keep in mind that this is still just an unconfirmed report so take this news with a pinch of salt.

Apart from this, the new report also shares key specs like a 6.7 inch FHD+ pOLED display, and a 3.4 inch OLED external display. Under the hood, it is expected to pack the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 SoC that is paired with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The rear features a 32 megapixel primary and an 8 megapixel ultra wide angle lens, while the front houses a 32 megapixel selfie camera. Lastly, the device will be powered by a 3,500mAh battery pack that supports 33W fast charging and runs on MyUX 5 out of the box.

The month of May will be as busy as April if not more in terms of smartphone launches. Only 3 events are officially confirmed so far. But there are multiple other expected conferences, the dates for which should be revealed in the coming days.

We are looking forward to new product releases from a whopping 12 brands. Apple and Samsung are the only major companies that might not debut new phones. Though the latter may introduce certain already announced handsets in newer markets.

These forthcoming devices will be spread across different price segments. Most of the phones on the list are being launched ahead of the 618 shopping festival in China, which annually occurs during mid to late June.

That does not mean there won’t be any global releases. In fact, we will be witnessing the debut of some of the most anticipated smartphones of 2023.

With that out of the way, let’s go through all the handouts that are about to launch in May.

Upcoming Smartphones in May 2023

Poco F5 Series

The Poco F5 series will be unveiled on May 9 at 8 PM GMT+8. The lineup will include two devices, namely Poco F5 and Poco F5 Pro.

The standard and pro variants will be rebranded Redmi Note 12 Turbo and Redmi K60, respectively. They will be even sold in original Redmi colors instead of the usual Poco color schemes.

Just like the last Poco F Pro model (Poco F2 Pro), the Poco F5 Pro will not be sold in India. The vanilla F5 will come with 256GB as standard and is tipped to cost below ₹30,000 in India and $500 in other regions.

Realme 11 Series

The Realme 11 series is scheduled to launch in China on May 10 at 4 PM GMT+8. The lineup is said to consist of three handsets, such as Realme 11, Realme 11 Pro, and Realme 11 Pro Plus.

However, the brand has been only teasing the ‘Pro+’ variant. This version will not only have a leather back but also an OIS-assisted 200MP main camera and a curved display. It will be powered by the newly announced MediaTek Dimensity 7050 chipset.

These phones are also tipped to release in India this month. But we don’t have a date for it so far.

Google Pixel Fold and Pixel 7a

The 2023 edition of Google I/O will begin on May 10. The search giant is expected to take wraps off the Pixel Fold and Pixel 7a during the opening keynote of its developer conference, which will begin at 10 AM PT.

The Pixel Fold will be the company’s first foldable smartphone. The water-resistant foldable will feature a 7.6-inch horizontal foldable display and a 5.8-inch external screen. It is said to cost around $1,700.

On the other hand, the Pixel 7a will be the seventh-gen affordable Pixel A series handset. It will offer several upgrades over Pixel 6a, like a 90Hz display, Tensor G2 chip, and OIS-assisted 64MP primary camera, and more.

Sony Xperia 1 V

The Sony Xperia 1 V is set to launch on May 11 at 6 AM CEST. Unfortunately, not much is known about this upcoming flagship phone from the Japanese electronics giant.

Rumors say that it will arrive with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, a 4K 120Hz OLED display, a 12MP (wide) + 12MP (periscope) + 48MP (ultra-wide) triple camera system, a shutter button, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a 5,000mAh battery.

The device may or may not be accompanied by Xperia 5 V and Xperia 10 V.

Motorola Razr 2023 Series and Edge 40

Lenovo-owned Motorola is expected to unveil its new generation Razr clamshell foldables and an Edge series flagship smartphone either by the end of May or early June.

For the first time, the revived Razr lineup will have two models in a single generation. They are said to be called Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra. The latter will have the largest cover screen on a clamshell foldable handset to date.

Whereas, the Edge 40 will be a toned-down version of Edge 40 Pro with some interesting features. It will come with a leather back, water resistance, a MediaTek Dimensity 8020 chip, a 144Hz OLED display, a 50MP primary camera, a 4,400mAh battery, 68W wired charging, and 15W wireless charging.

Honor 90 Series

The Honor 90 series is tipped to launch in May, however, its release could be delayed until June. The successor of the Honor 80 series is rumored to bring upgrades in the camera and performance departments.

The higher-end model in the lineup is said to arrive with specs, such as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC, a 1.5K resolution curved display with high-frequency PWM, and a 200MP Samsung ISOCELL S5KH3 camera.

More or less, the top model will be almost the same as the Honor 80 Pro that was released in late November 2022.

iQOO Neo 8 Series

The iQOO Neo 8 series is anticipated to make its debut in China in May. There will be a standard and a pro variant. The iQOO Neo 8 Pro will be the first pro model in the Neo series.

As far as specs are concerned, the vanilla and Pro versions will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 and MediaTek Dimensity 9200 Plus chipsets, respectively. Both will sport a 120Hz OLED display with a fingerprint sensor underneath it.

The duo will arrive with a 50MP main camera but the sensors will be different; Sony IMX866V on pro and Sony IMX766V on regular. The pro version will also come with faster LPDDR5x RAM and UFS 4.0 storage.

Realme Narzo N53

The Realme Narzo N53 is tipped to launch in India in May. It will be a 4G-only handset like the recently released Realme Narzo N55.

We only have details on the device’s memory configurations, colors, and possible price range for now. It is said to start under ₹13,000 and will be available in two memory variants (4GB + 64GB and 6GB + 128GB) and two colors (Feather Black and Feather Gold).

Tecno Camon 20 Series

The Tecno Camon 20 series could release in May. The lineup is said to include devices, such as Camon 20, Camon 20 Pro, and Camon 20 Premier 5G. As their names suggest, the first two handsets will be limited to 4G, while the last one will have support for 5G connectivity.

These phones will arrive with a unique rear design. The vanilla, pro, and premier variants will be powered by MediaTek’s Helio G85, Helio G99, and Dimensity 1200 chipsets, respectively.

The premier model will come with a better set of features, like a 120Hz AMOLED display, a 108MP primary camera with sensor-shift OIS, and up to 512GB storage.

Infinix Note 30 Series

The Infinix Note 30 series is anticipated to launch in May. Four devices are expected in the lineup, namely Infinix Note 30 5G, Infinix Note 30 VIP, Inifnix Note 30 Pro, and Infinix Note 30i.

The first two models will be 5G-enabled powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 810 and yet-to-be-announced Dimensity 8050 chips, respectively, Whereas, the other two handsets will be limited to 4G connectivity featuring MediaTek’s Helio G99 and Helio G85, respectively.

The VIO variant will arrive with features, such as a 108MP main camera, 256GB storage, speakers tuned by JBL, a 5,000mAh battery, and 68W fast charging.

Lava Agni 2 5G

Lava Agni 2 5G is expected to release in India in May. The brand has officially teased its arrival and we even know a few details about it.

The phone is tipped to cost below ₹25,000. It is said to come with a 120Hz AMOLED display, a MediaTek Dimensity 1080 SoC, a 50MP primary camera, a 5,000mAh battery, and 44W fast charging.

Vivo S17 Series

The Vivo S17 series is anticipated to debut in China in May. The lineup will include three phones, namely Vivo S17, Vivo S17 Pro, and Vivo S17e.

The Pro variant is expected to be powered by a MediaTek Dimenisty 8200 chipset, just like the Vivo S16 Pro. But the newer model will come with a 12MP zoom camera for portraits.

Whereas, the vanilla Vivo S17 and Vivo S17e will house a Snapdragon 778G/782G and Dimensity 7200 chips, respectively. All three models will carry support for 80W fast charging and sport OLED displays with an in-screen fingerprint sensor.

Vivo Y78 5G and Vivo Y36

The Vivo Y78 5G and Vivo 36 are expected to launch in May. The former will make its debut in China, whereas the latter will be introduced in India.

The Y78 5G will arrive with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 SoC, a 50MP main camera, and a 6.64-inch FHD+ display (LCD). On the other hand, the Vivo Y36 will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chip, a 5,000mAh battery, and 44W fast charging.

The Y78 5G is expected to cost around ¥1500 or lower, while the Y36 is tipped to be priced below ₹20,000.

Oppo Reno 10 Series

The Oppo Reno 10 series is anticipated to release in China in May. The lineup is rumored to include three handsets, such as Oppo Reno 10, Oppo Reno 10 Pro, and Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus.

The next-gen Reno family will arrive with a revamped design. The Pro Plus model is tipped to offer flagship-level features, like a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC, a 64MP periscope camera, a 50MP Sony IMX890 primary camera, and 100W fast charging.

While the Reno 10 and Reno 10 Pro are said to house a Snapdragon 778G and Dimensity 8200 chipsets, respectively. Unfortunately, not much is known about their other specs.

Oppo A98 5G and a Mysterious A Series Phone

The Oppo A98 5G and an unknown Oppo A series handset are expected to release in May. The former will debut in global markets, while the latter will be launched in China.

The A98 5G is anticipated to come with a 120Hz display (LCD), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 SoC, a 64MP main camera, a 5,000mAh battery, and 67W charging. Whereas, the mysterious A series phone will share most of its specs with the Oppo A1, except for cameras.
