<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/motorola/">Motorola</a> has filed a new patent revealing its achievements in rollable displays and fingerprint technology. Following the Moto Rizr rollable concept phone from last year, Motorola now appears to be working on a similar device but with a significant upgrade in fingerprint sensing capabilities.</p>

<p>According to a recent discovery by MySmartPrice, a patent listed on the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) website suggests that Motorola’s next rollable display device could feature full-screen fingerprint sensors, enabling users to unlock the device from any part of the screen.</p>

<h2>Patent details: full-screen fingerprint sensing</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="640" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/motorola-patent-2-2-1024x640.webp?x96852" alt="" class="wp-image-659015" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/motorola-patent-2-2-1024x640.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/motorola-patent-2-2-300x187.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/motorola-patent-2-2-768x480.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/motorola-patent-2-2-696x435.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/motorola-patent-2-2-1068x667.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/motorola-patent-2-2-672x420.webp 672w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/motorola-patent-2-2.webp 1226w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>The patent, titled “Managing consistent fingerprint-on-display (fod) location on a rollable device having multiple fod sensors,” describes a Motorola device with an advanced fingerprint authentication system across the entire display. By spreading multiple sensors across the screen, Motorola’s new device would offer flexibility in unlocking the phone from any part of the display.</p>

<p>Motorola’s new idea could be an evolution of the Moto Rizr, integrating full-screen fingerprint sensing as a standout feature. While this technology is still in the patent stage, the possibility of a rollable phone with all-screen unlocking capability represents a major step forward in user-friendly design.</p>

<h2>Revisiting the Motorola Rizr concept phone</h2>

<p>Motorola’s latest patent builds on the innovation showcased with the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/02/26/motorola-rizr-rollable-concept-smartphone-showcased-at-mwc-2023/">Motorola Rizr</a>, a rollable concept phone that garnered attention at MWC 2023. This device featured a flexible display capable of extending from 5 inches to 6.5 inches at the tap of a button. When compact, the display wraps around the back of the phone, functioning as a secondary screen for quick updates and notifications.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="756" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Motorola-Rizr-Gizmochina-1024x756.png?x96852" alt="Motorola Rizr" class="wp-image-518324" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Motorola-Rizr-Gizmochina-1024x756.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Motorola-Rizr-Gizmochina-300x221.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Motorola-Rizr-Gizmochina-768x567.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Motorola-Rizr-Gizmochina-696x514.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Motorola-Rizr-Gizmochina-1068x788.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Motorola-Rizr-Gizmochina-569x420.png 569w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Motorola-Rizr-Gizmochina-80x60.png 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Motorola-Rizr-Gizmochina.png 1180w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Motorola-Rizr</figcaption></figure>

<p>This adaptive screen provides users with both a smaller, pocket-sized display and a larger, immersive experience, depending on their needs.</p>

<p>The Rizr’s design and rollable functionality could be the basis for Motorola’s new patented concept. With a device that expands, wraps around, and now, potentially, unlocks from anywhere on the screen, Motorola aims to offer unique, user-centered innovations in this increasingly competitive smartphone market.</p>

<h2>Is Motorola’s rollable concept coming soon?</h2>

<p>It’s important to remember that patents don’t always result in commercial products. Companies frequently patent ideas to explore new technologies, but not all concepts make it to the market. For now, Motorola has yet to confirm whether it plans to release this rollable device with full-screen fingerprint sensing.</p>

<p>Nonetheless, the development suggests that Motorola is keen to make rollable devices more user-friendly and versatile. If Motorola decides to bring this device to market, it could redefine how users interact with their phones.</p>

<p>A <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/motorola">Motorola</a> rollable phone concept is part of the exciting concepts that have been showcased during Lenovo Tech World 2022. The conference is a gathering of innovative and futuristic concepts. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="900" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/motorola-rollable-2-1.jpg?x96852" alt="" class="wp-image-491058" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/motorola-rollable-2-1.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/motorola-rollable-2-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/motorola-rollable-2-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/motorola-rollable-2-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/motorola-rollable-2-1-696x696.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/motorola-rollable-2-1-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure>

<p>The Motorola Rollable Concept phone can expand vertically from a 5-inch slate to a 6.5-inch screen. The transformation is achieved using a physical button on the phone’s side. The rollable phone display has been propped up earlier by LG, but that won&#8217;t happen since LG has exited the smartphone market. The new Motorola rollable will be an improvement over previous similar concepts. It shows that there is great flexibility with OLED panels, as shown in some of the Motorola/Lenovo lineups. Content on the rollable smartphone, when rolled, will also dynamically adjust to expand the screen. The rollable phone market abounds with possibilities. We expect Lenovo and Motorola to continue research in that direction.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="900" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/motorola-rollable.jpg?x96852" alt="Motorola rollable phone" class="wp-image-491057" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/motorola-rollable.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/motorola-rollable-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/motorola-rollable-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/motorola-rollable-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/motorola-rollable-696x696.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/motorola-rollable-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure>

<p>The possibilities of new form factors and potential use cases are quite outstanding. A rollable Lenovo laptop is in the works, and it will have a vertically expanding screen for multitasking, browsing, and other functions. Some important details of the upcoming rollable smartphones and laptops are still lacking. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="Lenovo Tech World 2022: Rollable Tech with Luca Rossi" width="696" height="392" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/kDB08h73rjs?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p>The rollable OLED concept is a highly innovative and deeply involving research effort. We may be years away from seeing an actual phone with a rollable display. The optics shown by Motorola and Lenovo, however, indicate we are getting close. Some earlier models, like the ThinkPad X1 Fold 2022 and the Moto Razr series show this is a product that will likely be unveiled in no distant time.</p>
