<p>As the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/electric-vehicles">electric vehicle </a>(EV) market continues to expand, Lucid Motors has taken a significant step by embracing the North American Charging Standard (<a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/nacs">NACS</a>), a system initially developed by <a href="http://gizmochina.com/category/tesla">Tesla</a>. Starting in 2025, Lucid&#8217;s electric cars in North America will transition from the Combined Charging System 1 (CCS1) to NACS. This move paves the way for Lucid car owners to access Tesla&#8217;s vast Supercharging network, which boasts over 15,000 charging stations.</p>

<h2>Tesla has confirmed that NACS can support upto 1000-volt systems </h2>

<p>The adoption of NACS by Lucid is a reflection of a broader industry trend, signaling a gradual phase-out of the CCS1 charging standard. Previously, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/lucid-motors">Lucid</a> had reservations about NACS, particularly regarding compatibility with their high-voltage battery systems. However, any such concerns have been resolved, and even brands with a focus on high-voltage systems are now aligning with NACS. Tesla has confirmed that NACS can support systems up to 1,000 volts, which is suitable for the fast-charging needs of modern EVs.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="512" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/lucid-air-2020-001-min-1024x512.png?x10805" alt="Lucid" class="wp-image-425639" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/lucid-air-2020-001-min-1024x512.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/lucid-air-2020-001-min-300x150.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/lucid-air-2020-001-min-768x384.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/lucid-air-2020-001-min-696x348.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/lucid-air-2020-001-min-1068x534.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/lucid-air-2020-001-min-840x420.png 840w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/lucid-air-2020-001-min.png 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Peter Rawlinson, Lucid&#8217;s CEO, expressed that the integration of NACS is crucial for providing customers with more reliable and convenient charging options. He also emphasized the importance of a unified charging infrastructure to encourage EV adoption in the U.S.</p>

<p>The transition period until the shift in 2025 allows for the establishment of a more robust NACS-based charging network. SAE International is working to standardize the NACS connector, and various suppliers are expected to develop and offer compatible equipment, ensuring Tesla does not remain the only provider.</p>

<p>While Lucid has made its position clear, some major automakers like the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/volkswagen">Volkswagen</a> Group and Stellantis have not yet announced a switch to NACS, leaving a bit of uncertainty in the industry&#8217;s direction. Nevertheless, the future of EV charging in the U.S. seems to be consolidating around a single, high-voltage standard, which could be a game-changer for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.</p>

<p><a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/hyundai">Hyundai </a>is finally shaking hands with <a href="http://gizmochina.com/category/tesla">Tesla </a>to use its North America Charging Standard (<a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/nacs">NACS</a>). Scheduled to kick off in the US in late 2024, with Canada following suit in 2025, this move could change the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/electric-vehicles">electric vehicle</a> (EV) charging game.</p>

<h2>The company is also collaborating with Ford, GM and Honda for the future</h2>

<p>What’s the big deal? Hyundai&#8217;s EVs, including the much-anticipated Ioniq series, will now gain access to Tesla&#8217;s extensive Supercharger network. With over 12,000 Superchargers across North America, Hyundai is effectively doubling its DC fast-charging options for its customers. José Muñoz, CEO of Hyundai Motor North America, believes this collaboration will make life easier for Hyundai EV owners, promising access to a whopping 30,000 stations across the continent.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2024-hyundai-kona-electric37-1024x576.jpg?x10805" alt="Hyundai" class="wp-image-566274" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2024-hyundai-kona-electric37-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2024-hyundai-kona-electric37-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2024-hyundai-kona-electric37-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2024-hyundai-kona-electric37-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2024-hyundai-kona-electric37-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2024-hyundai-kona-electric37-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2024-hyundai-kona-electric37-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2024-hyundai-kona-electric37.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>But Hyundai isn’t putting all its eggs in Tesla&#8217;s basket. Alongside this partnership, the Korean automaker is also collaborating with big players like <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/bmw">BMW</a>, GM, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/honda">Honda</a>, and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/mercedes">Mercedes </a>to cook up a separate North American network of at least 30,000 chargers. The first US installations of these chargers are expected to be up and running by summer 2024.</p>

<p>Why does this matter? Fast charging has been a sticking point for people considering switching to electric cars. Until now, Tesla led the charge (pun intended) in offering a robust fast-charging network. Hyundai, despite recently leaping over GM in U.S. EV sales, has always been in Tesla&#8217;s rearview mirror. This strategic alliance levels the playing field somewhat and could encourage more consumers to opt for a Hyundai EV.</p>

<p>While Hyundai’s collaboration with Tesla is a huge win for accessibility, it also marks a subtle shift in the auto industry. Tesla&#8217;s <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/supercharger">Supercharger </a>network is no longer an exclusive club; it&#8217;s becoming an industry standard. The list of automakers signing up for Tesla&#8217;s network is growing, and it&#8217;s not just Hyundai. Ford, GM, Honda, and several others have also jumped on the bandwagon.</p>

<p>In a recent announcement, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/honda">Honda </a>confirmed its commitment to adopting Tesla&#8217;s North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its future electric vehicles (EVs) in North America, including those under its luxury brand, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/acura">Acura</a>. Noriya Kaihara, the CEO of American Honda Motor Co., emphasized the importance of pushing NACS standards forward in an interview.</p>

<h3>Honda is possibly taking a gamble on this choice, considering its earlier EV models are on GM&#8217;s platform</h3>

<p>However, the timeline for the integration remains fuzzy, relying heavily on General Motors (GM), as Honda&#8217;s initial EV models are built on GM&#8217;s Ultium platform. While GM aims to switch to NACS by 2025, Honda may take until 2025 or 2026 to adopt the standard for models like the Acura ZDX.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="889" height="500" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2024-acura-zdx-type-s.webp?x10805" alt="Electric" class="wp-image-565087" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2024-acura-zdx-type-s.webp 889w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2024-acura-zdx-type-s-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2024-acura-zdx-type-s-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2024-acura-zdx-type-s-696x391.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2024-acura-zdx-type-s-747x420.webp 747w" sizes="(max-width: 889px) 100vw, 889px" /></figure></div>

<p>So, is this a move towards a more harmonized automotive industry, or is Honda taking a gamble?</p>

<p>Adopting NACS is not just a Honda-Tesla affair; it resonates industry-wide. Several automakers, including GM, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/bmw">BMW</a>, and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/hyundai">Hyundai</a>, are on board with creating a joint fast-charging network, focusing on reliability and accessibility. Jay Joseph, American Honda&#8217;s Vice President, noted that the success of <a href="http://gizmochina.com/category/tesla">Tesla</a>&#8216;s Supercharger network largely depends on robust maintenance—something Honda also aims to achieve with the new venture.</p>

<p>Honda&#8217;s commitment to NACS isn&#8217;t without its challenges. The automaker&#8217;s timing hangs in the balance with GM&#8217;s adoption schedule. Moreover, Honda is also developing its platform for future all-electric models, which is anticipated to support NACS right out of the gate, but leaves the company straddling two different platforms in the interim.</p>

<p>In an industry striving for standardization, Honda’s choice to align with NACS is significant. But the contingent nature of its plans, dependent on GM’s timelines, presents a question: Is Honda pioneering towards a more unified industry or taking a gamble with unforeseen complications? Only time will reveal the answer, but one thing is clear: Honda is betting big on NACS, and it could either set a precedent for others to follow or serve as a cautionary tale.</p>

<p>With more and more car manufacturers heavily focusing on <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/electric-vehicle">electric cars</a>, there&#8217;s now a need for a standard charging port that can help in the long run with better and unified infrastructure for charging stations.</p>

<p>In line with that, Volvo Cars has announced that the company will adopt Tesla&#8217;s North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its electric vehicles sold in the North American market. This makes <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/volvo">Volvo</a> the first European car manufacturer to adopt this charging port.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Volvo_EX30_EV-3-1024x683.jpg?x10805" alt="Volvo EX30" class="wp-image-542943" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Volvo_EX30_EV-3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Volvo_EX30_EV-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Volvo_EX30_EV-3-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Volvo_EX30_EV-3-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Volvo_EX30_EV-3-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Volvo_EX30_EV-3-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Volvo_EX30_EV-3-630x420.jpg 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Volvo_EX30_EV-3.jpg 1620w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Volvo EX30</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>With this move, the cars from Volvo with NACS port will be able to access <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tesla">Tesla</a>&#8216;s Supercharger network, which is currently available at more than 12,000 locations across the continent.</p>

<p>For those who are unaware, NACS is a single-port charging system that has support for both AC and DC charging. Compared to the Combined Charging System (CCS) connector, the NACS connector is about half the size and twice as powerful.</p>

<p>Commenting about this, Henrik Green, chief technology officer at Volvo <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/car">Cars</a>, said, <em>&#8220;We are committed to making electric cars more convenient and accessible for our customers. By adopting NACS, we are giving our customers the freedom to charge their cars anywhere in North America.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>The development from Volvo is a major step towards a unified charging infrastructure in North America. It also gives a boost to Tesla, which has often been criticized for having a closed <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/charging">charging</a> network.</p>

<p>As of now, Volvo has not announced which models will be available in the new connector but the first NACS-equipped vehicles from the company are expected to go on sale later this year.</p>
