Google has recently announced a couple of new smart home products. We previously covered the launch of the Google TV Streamer 4K a while back, and now, the brand has unveiled the Nest Learning Thermostat. Similar to the TV Streamer, this gadget is also smarter thanks to AI.

Google Nest Learning Thermostat Specs

The search engine giant has been working on bringing AI to its software like Google Photos, Gmail, and others. But the integration of AI has expanded to its physical products as well. The Google TV Streamer is a great example and the Google Nest Learning Thermostat expands on this as well. Officially, the gadget is dubbed the Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen. It brings a refreshed design and new AI powered features to your smart home.

The company has made its screen bigger with thinner bezels than its predecessor. The panel displays key information like time, temperature, weather, and outdoor air quality. Google’s new Nest Learning Thermostat arrives in three color variants, namely Polished Silver, Polished Obsidian, and Polished Gold. A major smart feature of this device is automatic micro adjustments based on the user’s patterns. These changes are also based on the analysis of the temperature and weather conditions outside. This pebble shaped product can be controlled via the Google Home app.

Pricing and Availability

Google has unveiled the Nest Learning Thermostat and it is currently on pre-order at select Google stores and select retailers. It has a price tag of 279.99 US Dollars in the US and 379.99 US Dollars in Canada. First sales for this device will kick off on 20th August 2024. The Nest Learning Thermostat also comes with additional sensors, which you can buy for 39.99 US Dollars each or for 99.99 US Dollars for a 3 pack.

A mysterious “wireless device” from Google recently appeared in the documents of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC). It indicates that Soli radar technology will usher in new application opportunities. The device equips short-range 60GHz Soli radar technology, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity, and also comes with a base plate.

A mysterious device with 60GHz Soli radar technology

According to IT Home, Soli radar is a 60GHz mm-wave radar technology developed by Google and Infineon specifically for close-range perception tasks. Google is reportedly responsible for developing the signal processing and software parts, while Infineon Technologies owns the intellectual property rights of chip hardware technology. Notably a similar product was first released in 2016. The second generation of the technology was released in 2018, which was used in the gesture recognition module of the Pixel 4 and the sleep monitoring function of the Nest Hub.

Google, with the help of its developer program, has been able to launch a series of innovative applications around the world.

According to ITHome, the mysterious product could be a new Nest Thermostat. FCC documents reveal that the device has no other radio modules except the 2.4GHz and 60GHz bands.

The Nest Thermostat released in 2020 also only supports these two frequency bands and uses Soli radar to automatically light up the display when the user approaches the device. The device will likely require a constant power supply to operate since there is no mention of a battery. It only supports 802.11n Wi-Fi on the 2.4GHz band, which is unlikely for a smart speaker. Even Google’s more affordable Nest Mini supports the 5GHz band.

It can be a smartwatch from Google, as they don’t use a 5GHz band in the product category. For the Wi-Fi-only version of the watch, 2.4GHz, Bluetooth, and the new radar technology should be sufficient. However, the device will keep a distance of at least 20 cm from the human body under normal use. So it’s unlikely to be a smartwatch and seems to be similar to the Nest Thermostat released in 2020.

This time, it says the amount of recycled materials will increase, and come with plastic-free packaging by 2025.

Google explains its new sustainable development goals in a blog post(via XDADevelopers). It says, it has hit the target of using recycled materials on all of google products by 2022, two years earlier. As per Google, Pixel 5 is made of 100% recycled aluminum. The company says the mined aluminum in the enclosure lowers waste, and carbon footprint by 35% compared to Virgin aluminum. Furthermore, Nest products like the Nest Audio and Nest Thermostat have 70% including acoustic fabric and 75% recycled plastics respectively but doesn’t mention Chromecast with Google TV.

As a part of the new plan, all of Google’s hardware products will have 50% recycled plastics by 2025. It adds that this goal is well beyond the industry standards. And to achieve this, it’s going to use recycled materials to the maximum possible limits. Google also feels that waste generated after manufacturing should be sustainable. And hence, it is perpetrating to achieve UL 2799 Zero Waste to Landfill Certification at all final assembly sites by 2022.

The certification indicates that a company is effectively recycling a vast majority of waste from the operations. However, the most highlight of all is the packaging. The company is planning to ship its products to&fro safely whilst maintaining 100% carbon neutral packaging. Simply put, by 2025, it’s plans to make the entire packaging plastic-free and 100% recyclable.

That said, it’s going to be a long road for Google as it tackles the Logistics issues through a lot of hard work. Apart from planning to partner with suppliers, Google has reportedly invested in bringing sustainability to all of its products including operations. And its communities.
