Netflix’s Anti-Password Sharing Strategy Leads to 6 Million New Subscribers

It seems that Netflix‘s recent actions are not fruitless, as the company reports a surge in subscribers during the second quarter of 2023. The streaming giant added nearly 6 million paying subscribers, an impressive 8 percent increase, validating the effectiveness of its push to stop users from sharing accounts beyond their households. For context, Netflix banned account sharing between people to boost its own revenue.

This new feature has now been implemented in over 100 countries

Contrary to concerns at the time of this decision’s execution, the crackdown on password sharing has not resulted in mass cancellations. Instead, it has inspired more people to sign up for their own accounts. According to the company’s letter to shareholders, there has been a healthy conversion of borrowers into full-paying Netflix members, along with an uptake of the new “extra member” feature.

In addition to restricting account sharing, Netflix has introduced a “paid sharing” option, allowing subscribers to pay $8 per month to add an “extra member” to their account. This feature is now available in over 100 countries, showcasing Netflix’s commitment to enhancing user experience globally. The company has also streamlined its subscription plans, recently discontinuing its $10 “basic” plan in the United States and the UK after its removal in Canada.

Looking ahead, Netflix plans to extend its password-sharing restrictions to the remaining countries where they are not yet enforced, such as India, Indonesia, Kenya, and Croatia. Instead of offering the “extra member” option in these regions, users will be able to transfer their profiles to fresh accounts.

During the company’s live-streamed interview discussing its results, co-CEO Ted Sarandos addressed the ongoing strikes among Hollywood’s actors and writers. He stated that Netflix is committed to finding an equitable solution, even though they have lowered their cash expenditure estimates by $1.5 billion due to the impact of the strikes.

The introduction of “paid sharing” and the streamlining of subscription plans have further strengthened the company’s position as the leading global streaming platform. Netflix crackdown on password sharing to begin soon

Netflix is preparing to implement its long-discussed policy against account sharing for all users. According to a letter sent to shareholders the other day, the policy will be in effect by the end of July in the United States and shortly thereafter worldwide. The company has estimated that more than 100 million households share passwords. This means that if these individuals were to either open new accounts or pay additional fees for the shared accounts, it could generate billions of dollars in extra revenue for Netflix.

Many users are curious about how Netflix will detect account sharing. In fact, the streaming giant is still working on this issue. The purpose of tests in Asia and South America is to solve these problems. For example, it would be quite frustrating for the system to think you are sharing your account while traveling or on vacation and then request an additional fee. The company is developing alternative solutions to ensure such scenarios do not happen.

Netflix will charge extra if uses share their account password with others

Netflix is working towards a new policy where users will have to pay a little amount on top of the plan fees to share the password with members outside their household.

In a blog titled “Paying to Share Netflix Outside Your Household”, Netflix said, “So for the last year we’ve been working on ways to enable members who share outside their household to do so easily and securely, while also paying a bit more. And over the next few weeks, we’ll launch and test two new features for our members in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru.”

The move comes after Netflix repeatedly stated that users sharing their passwords with friends and family is hurting the company’s earnings. So now, users will need to pay extra money on top of their subscription charges if they want to share their passwords with someone outside their premises.

Netflix is introducing two new features, “Add an Extra Member” and “Transfer Profile to a New Account”, to overcome the problem of users sharing their passwords with members outside their household.

The “Add an Extra Member,” feature will provide users of Standard and Premium plans to add two sub-accounts for people they don’t live with. Each user would have their own username and password. And it will cost users CLP 2,380 (approx Rs 225) in Chile, USD 2.99 in Costa Rica, and PEN 7.9 in Peru.

Additionally, the “Transfer Profile to a New Account,” feature will allow users to transfer the existing profile to a new account, keeping the user’s watch history, favorites, and personalized recommendations. This feature will be available to Basic, Standard, and Premium plan members.

These new charges and features have not yet been introduced in India. Additionally considering that the Indian market is price sensitive and Netflix had to reduce its price for the Indian market as compared to other markets in the world, it would be interesting to see what strategy Netflix will adopt for India.
