Netflix Games on TV May be Played Using iPhones as Controllers Soon

Anubhav — Thu, 30 Mar 2023 03:53:01 +0000

In 2021, Netflix made a surprising move, integrating mobile games into its platform. Netflix Games was a new gaming service launched by Netflix that allows subscribers to access and play games directly within the Netflix app. As of now, the service offers a selection of mobile games, which can be played on both iOS and Android devices. The games are included with the Netflix subscription, and there is no additional cost to play them. Even a year and a half later, the service is still in its early stages, and it remains to be seen how much Netflix will expand its gaming offerings and whether it will eventually include console or PC games. As per the latest reports, however, it seems that Netflix gaming enthusiasts will be able to use their iPhones to play games on their televisions.

To boost the popularity of games on its platforms, Netflix seems to be taking active steps. Recently, a code snippet was spotted by a MacRumors writer, Steve Moser, that points towards the functionality of letting the user pick their iPhone as a controller for the Netflix TV application. It is worth noting that so far, Netflix games are only available on iOS and Android devices, not on TV-based applications. This move would imply that the company might be looking to launch newer games, or simply label itself as a more mainstream platform for games.

One might even question why Netflix is so bent on publishing games to its platform. Well, clearly, the company is looking to expand its offerings beyond just TV shows and movies, and to provide subscribers with additional entertainment options. By offering games, Netflix aims to keep users engaged on its platform for longer periods of time, which could lead to increased subscriptions and revenue. Additionally, games have proven to be a popular form of entertainment, and with the rise of mobile gaming, it makes sense for the platform to tap into this market. Finally, offering games may help Netflix differentiate itself from its competitors and appeal to a broader audience. None of its competitors, including Prime Video and Disney Plus are taking similar steps, so the company might just be onto something here.

Netflix launches its first mobile games — Here’s all you need to know

Jeet — Wed, 03 Nov 2021 01:32:24 +0000

A few months ago, media streaming giant Netflix had announced its own gaming service named Netflix Mobile Gaming which made its debut in Poland with two Stranger Things mobile games. Now, the service is expanding to other regions as well. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

How Does It Work?

The Netflix application can be used to find the games as an individual download and confirm the Netflix account credentials before loading them. Some of the games need an active internet connection to keep playing but there are some games that work completely offline. However, in such a case, you will still need an internal connection to confirm your Netflix credentials at the time of loading the game.

What About Shared Accounts?

Interestingly, this new game feature for the Netflix app also supports multiple and simultaneous logins, depending on your account type as it basically works the same as the streaming service. This means that everyone can log in and play games simultaneously until an account’s maximum devices limit is reached. Once the maximum devices limit hits, you will get an alert for the same, similar to how it works for video streaming.

Which Games Are Available?

The games coming to the platform include two smartphone-friendly games based on Stranger Things services and three arcade-y tap-action games. These titles were all previously launched on smartphone storefronts. However, as a part of Netflix Games, they have been updated to work without any upfront costs or hidden microtransactions.

Stranger Things: 1984
Stranger Things 3: The Game
Shooting Hoops
Card Blast
Teeter Up

While the games are all kid-friendly, there are listed as adult content. So, accessing them with a kids’ account will require entering the PIN code.

Availability

Netflix has announced that its gaming services will now be available in more than 190 countries, including the United States. Users will still need to own either an Android-based smartphone or a tablet to play games.

Do note that you will need an active Netflix subscription to play games and the company notes that there are no ads, additional fees, or microtransactions. As noted, the service is currently limited to Android devices only but the company says that iOS support will be rolled out in the coming months.

Netflix acquires video game creator Night School Studio to boost its gaming service

Jeet — Wed, 29 Sep 2021 06:42:37 +0000

Earlier this year, in July, media streaming giant Netflix announced plans for adding game streaming services to its platform. Last month, Netflix Gaming made its debut in Poland with two Stranger Things mobile games.

Today, Netflix has announced the acquisition of video game creator Night School Studio, marking the first purchase of a gaming studio for the streaming giant.

Along with the acquisition, the company has also rolled out five mobile gaming titles in select European markets. Night School Studio is best known for its debut game, Oxenfree, a supernatural teen thriller with an eerie soundtrack.

The studio’s games — available on Sony’s PlayStation, Microsoft’s Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PCs — will be the first non-mobile titles in Netflix’s video game portfolio.

The news about this acquisition comes at a time when Netflix is looking to diversify its revenue sources as the competition in the online streaming space is increased day by day and new platforms keep coming up.

In a statement, Night School Studio said: “Netflix gives film, TV, and now game makers an unprecedented canvas to create and deliver excellent entertainment to millions of people. Our explorations in narrative gameplay and Netflix’s track record of supporting diverse storytellers was such a natural pairing.”

Netflix has already confirmed that it won’t be offering a separate subscription for this new gaming service as it is ”a one-product company.” This means that a subscription to the streaming platform offers movies, TV shows, documentaries, and games.

Netflix Mobile Gaming makes its debut in Poland with two Stranger Things games

Netflix announced a few months ago that it plans to add game streaming to its service as early as next year. Last month, it revealed that will begin with mobile games first. Today, Netflix Gaming made its debut in Poland with two Stranger Things mobile games.

The service will be exclusive to Android for now and includes two games, Stranger Things: 1984 and Stranger Things 3. The games will appear under a new tab in the Netflix mobile app as seen in the image above. From the screenshot attached to the announcement, users will have to install these games to play and not stream them.

Let’s talk Netflix and gaming.

Today members in Poland can try Netflix mobile gaming on Android with two games, Stranger Things: 1984 and Stranger Things 3. It’s very, very early days and we’ve got a lot of work to do in the months ahead, but this is the first step. https://t.co/yOl44PGY0r

When you tap on the install button, it opens up the Google Play Store within the app. Once the download is complete, you will be able to play the game from within the Netflix app only as the games won’t appear in your app drawer.

If you are disappointed that this isn’t game streaming but just a way to access mobile games made for popular Netflix shows, the streaming service said “it’s very, very early days and we’ve got a lot of work to do in the months ahead,”.

What Netflix is offering now is a way to play games tied to its shows at no extra price. Stranger Things 3 is available on the Nintendo Switch but for $9.99. Netflix subscribers will be able to play the game for free with no ads and no in-app purchases.

It is too early to write off the service as this is just a test run. We expect Netflix has big plans in the pipeline and a true game streaming experience awaits users.
