Nintendo’s Switch 2 could get more expensive in 2026, and artificial intelligence may be the unlikely culprit.

According to a new Bloomberg report, Nintendo is contemplating a price hike for the Switch 2 amid surging global memory prices. The console, which launched in 2025 at $ 449.99/£395.99, may not remain at that price for long.

The problem isn’t poor sales. Switch 2 has reportedly moved over 17 million units, outpacing the original Switch at launch. Instead, the issue is RAM, specifically DRAM, which has become the battleground resource in the AI arms race.

Tech giants like Meta, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon are pouring hundreds of billions into AI data centers, snapping up Nvidia accelerators loaded with massive amounts of memory. Each new AI server rack can consume as much RAM as thousands of smartphones.

That demand has sent memory prices into what analysts are calling “RAMmageddon.” Bloomberg reports that the cost of one type of DRAM jumped 75% in a single month. Suppliers such as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are prioritizing high-bandwidth memory for AI chips, leaving consumer electronics manufacturers fighting over shrinking DRAM capacity.

Nintendo isn’t alone. Sony is reportedly considering delaying its PlayStation 6 to 2028 or even 2029. Microsoft has already raised Xbox prices, and Sony bumped PS5 pricing last year. Even Apple and Tesla have warned investors about margin pressure tied to memory shortages.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently told shareholders there are no immediate plans for a price increase, but he stopped short of ruling one out. If memory costs remain elevated, Nintendo may have little choice but to protect margins.

Switch 2 may have launched just before the full force of this memory crunch hit. If Bloomberg’s reporting holds true, the era of cheaper consoles could be over, and waiting for a discount might not pay off this time.

Portability Done Right (Again)

The original Switch made its name by being both a handheld and a home console. The Switch 2 doesn’t mess with that formula; it improves on it. The design is a bit larger, about 25% bigger than the first-gen model, but it’s still something you can toss in a backpack. The console flaunts a new 7.9-inch display is a noticeable step up from the original 6.2 inches, and that extra screen space matters when you’re gaming on the go.

Real Performance Gains

Nintendo’s not trying to beat the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X in raw horsepower, but the Switch 2 is no slouch. Under the hood is Nvidia’s custom Tegra 239 chip, running on Ampere architecture with 2048 CUDA cores. That’s geek-speak for “this thing can handle modern games decently.”

In handheld mode, you’re looking at around 1.71 teraflops of processing power, just shy of the original PlayStation 4. In docked mode, the performance jumps to 3.1 teraflops, which puts it within shouting distance of the Xbox Series S. 

Thanks to Nvidia’s DLSS and ray tracing support, Switch 2 games can also look much sharper without sacrificing framerate. Nintendo says you can expect 1080p at 60fps in handheld and 4K at 60fps while docked. That’s a huge leap from the 720p resolution on the OG Switch.

A Better, Brighter Display

One of the biggest debates leading up to launch was the decision to skip OLED and stick with an LCD panel. But this isn’t your average LCD. The 7.9-inch screen supports HDR10, VRR (variable refresh rate), and a 120Hz refresh rate, things you typically see on higher-end gaming monitors, not consoles you carry around.

While OLED would have delivered deeper blacks, early hands-on impressions suggest the screen still looks vibrant, sharp, and fast. The 1080p resolution finally gives portable games room to breathe, and the higher refresh rate means less blur when racing, fighting, or platforming at speed.

For handheld players, this screen might be the biggest reason to upgrade.

Fresh Games (and a Few Old Friends)

Nintendo’s launch lineup isn’t massive, but it’s putting a few key titles front and center. Mario Kart World is the flagship release. It brings a new open-map battle format and support for 120fps, with 24-player elimination-style races that shake up the traditional formula.

The Switch 2 Welcome Tour, a $10 tech demo disguised as a mini-game collection, shows off what the console can do. And Donkey Kong Bananza, dropping in July, finally gives DK the open-world experience he’s long deserved.

There’s also a new Metroid Prime, a Zelda spinoff (Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment), and a strange but intriguing wheelchair basketball game called Drag x Drive arriving this summer. And yes, more games are on the way, including Kirby Air Riders in 2025.

Even better, the console is backward compatible, mostly. Not every old Switch game will work, especially those that relied on legacy Joy-Con features like the infrared camera. But both physical cartridges and digital downloads from your old library will work, and that’s good news if you’ve already sunk a few hundred dollars into games over the years.

Accessories and Features That Just Make Sense

Nintendo rarely skimps on accessories, and the Switch 2 is launching with a whole ecosystem. From protective cases to new charging docks, there’s no shortage of gear to enhance your experience. The new dock even comes with active cooling, which should help during intense 4K gameplay sessions.

The updated Pro Controller looks like a solid option for those who prefer more traditional inputs while docked, and streaming support is already baked in. Want to show off your gameplay on Twitch or chat mid-game with a friend? There’s a camera, compatible headsets, and native support for it all.

And one small but smart touch. The right Joy-Con can now function like a computer mouse. It’s not a feature everyone will use, but it hints at Nintendo’s broader ambitions for hybrid productivity and play.

Nintendo’s long-awaited Switch 2 is set to hit shelves officially tomorrow for $449.99, but the company has already pulled back the curtain on something far less flashy and far more practical: repair costs. If you’re planning to buy one and considering how fast preorders have moved, many already have; it’s worth knowing how much you might pay down the road if your shiny new console starts acting up.

The repair prices, quietly posted on Nintendo’s Japanese website, paint a picture of the Switch 2’s internal architecture and the likely wear points that could eventually need servicing. The fees range from a relatively modest 7,150 yen (about $50) for minor issues to a steep 27,500 yen (around $192) for serious motherboard-level failures. All prices include tax.

Let’s start with the worst-case scenario: if your Switch 2 suddenly refuses to power on, won’t charge, freezes frequently, or throws up constant game read errors, you’re likely looking at a motherboard replacement. That fix costs the full 27,500 yen, which isn’t far off the price of an entirely new console in some markets.

Cracked screens or broken touch panels, both of which are unfortunately common in portable devices, will cost 15,400 yen (roughly $108). That’s less than a full replacement, but still painful enough to make you think twice before tossing your Switch 2 in a bag without a case.

Other mid-tier repairs include the USB-C charging port, the battery, or the game card slot, each priced at 9,900 yen ($69). These components are frequently used and can wear out over time, especially if the device is used docked and undocked often or travels a lot.

And then there are the low-end repairs: speaker glitches, SD card issues, and headphone jack failures. These fall into the 7,150 yen ($50) bracket, which sits at the more affordable end of Nintendo’s official repair pricing.

It’s worth noting that Nintendo’s regional repair policies vary, so international pricing could look different once the Switch 2 rolls out globally. Still, the Japanese pricing gives a clear idea of where the most vulnerable parts lie and what kind of bill you might face if your console starts misbehaving.

GTA 6 may skip the Nintendo Switch 2

For those unaware, Take-Two Interactive is the parent company of Rockstar Games studio, which is working on the GTA 6. In Take-Two’s recent financial report, CEO Strauss Zelnick talked about the future of the company’s games on Nintendo’s platform. While he expressed a positive outlook for future titles, GTA 6 might not be arriving on the Nintendo Switch 2.

Zelnick stated that “In terms of what we would bring to any platform, we address it on a case-by-case basis, we obviously want to be where the consumers are. But we would not necessarily bring every title to every platform. There are also great catalog opportunities as well.” So a Nintendo Switch 2 port doesn’t seem to be actively developed at the moment. To recall, GTA 6 is set to debut on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on 26th May 2025.

There is no word on the PC launch, but it will follow a delayed release similar to GTA V. Looking at the recent trailer, the new GTA title is clearly a next gen title with gorgeous high fidelity visuals. While the Switch 2 is getting upgrades in the hardware department, the Switch 2 might still not be powerful enough to run the upcoming game. Rockstar might be able to optimize it sometime in the future. Keep in mind that this is still just speculation at the moment, so takes this news with a pinch of salt for now.

Nintendo has a new hit on its hands, but it’s not all good news. The Switch 2, its follow-up to the massively successful hybrid console, has drawn so much interest in Japan that the company is already issuing apologies for its inability to meet demand.

In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa acknowledged that the demand for the Switch 2 had “far exceeded” expectations. 

Japan alone has 2.2 million pre-orders of the Switch 2

According to Furukawa, over 2.2 million people applied for a lottery just to pre-order the console through the My Nintendo Store. This, according to him, is far more than the company can actually supply by the launch date of June 5.

“We deeply apologize for failing to meet your expectations despite our preparations,” Furukawa says. 

The message was direct and unusually candid, which honestly is a good thing for consumers. Rather than a vague statement, Nintendo chose to clearly communicate the delay of Switch 2 shipments. We think most consumers will likely understand this.

Those who didn’t secure a pre-order in the first lottery round will be automatically entered into a second round. But even then, Furukawa warned that there still won’t be enough consoles to go around. 

The company says it will improve its production system, and it will also start taking pre-orders and lottery sales for the Switch 2 from game retailers and online stores nationwide. The console will continue to be sold through the My Nintendo Store post-launch.

So it sounds like only the lucky one selected in the first lottery sale will be able to get their hands on the Switch 2 early. Nintendo is clearly trying to manage the fallout from a demand problem of its own making. But it surely will take time.

Trump’s decision to impose a 145% tariff on China-made electronics is a major blow to U.S. companies like Apple. 

There was brief relief over the weekend when the U.S. government announced that certain tech products, like smartphones and laptops, would be exempt from the new tariffs. 

But that changed days later when Trump clarified that this wouldn’t be the case. Instead, the Chinese electronics will reportedly be moved to a different tariff “bucket” (via BBC). As a result, electronics made in China are still on the hook for higher import costs. 

Even if the exemption for certain tech products like smartphones and laptops remains in effect, game consoles reportedly weren’t included.

Game consoles like Nintendo Switch 2 still face a 145% tariff

Nikkei Asia has reportedly seen an internal assessment memo from a major “Apple and Nintendo supplier,” which states that game consoles are still subject to the 145% tariff. This means devices like the Switch 2 could see a significant price increase in the U.S. 

What makes matters worse is that most of the Switch 2 consoles are manufactured in China. A smaller number is produced in Vietnam, but not enough to avoid the tariff entirely. Sony also relies on Chinese manufacturing for a significant portion of its PlayStation 5 production.

In response, Nintendo has paused pre-orders for the Switch 2 in the U.S. and Canada. The company originally planned to open orders on April 9, but those plans are now on hold with no updated timeline.

The Switch 2 was announced with a $499 price tag, but it’s unclear whether Nintendo will stick to that price if tariffs drive up production and shipping costs.

The Japanese console giant has been tight-lipped about its next-generation console, but leaks haven’t stopped peering into it. The Nintendo Switch 2 logo has also been leaked recently, which looks very similar to the last one.

Thanks to 91mobiles and OnLeaks, we now have high-quality renders and a 360-degree video of the highly awaited Nintendo Switch 2. The much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 with a larger screen, bigger controllers, and several design tweaks seems to take things to the next level.

What the renders reveal

Leaks have shown an in-depth view of the new design. On top, it features a power button and volume rocker on the right, with the game card slot located on the left. This hints at the fact that Switch 2 is probably going to have backward compatibility with titles that exist in the existing Switch – a real gamer’s delight if he has an enormous library.

A 3.5mm headphone jack also makes an appearance, perfect for users who still cherish their wired headphones. Right next to it is a USB Type-C port, expected to handle charging. This addresses a common complaint with the current Switch design, which makes charging cumbersome, especially in tabletop mode. There’s also a mysterious sensor on the top—possibly an ambient light sensor.

This means that the next-gen Nintendo console will be able to play older games made for the previous generation. A translated version of the information reveals that the Switch 2 will allow developers to study improvements for the current titles in the Nintendo Switch library.  This means that games on the original Switch could feature enhancements and run on the upcoming next-gen console. Nintendo Switch 2 display leaked, launch later this year

The latest information was shared by Bloomberg citing the Omdia analyst. Hayase conducts research based on company’s supply chains of small and medium displays. As per the report, the Nintendo Switch 2 will be equipped with an 8-inch LCD screen. This is expected to be a big upgrade from the 6.2 and 7-inch displays on the original Switch’s standard and OLED variants. 

The analyst adds that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be the force behind doubling in the shipments of amusement displays in 2024. The report does not reveal any additional details. Bloomberg says that this is a credible source. 

Last year, Nintendo reportedly showcased the Switch 2 to fellow publishers and developers for the first time at Gamescom. As per leaks, it will pack Nvidia Tegra 239 chipset but lack DLSS support. Rumors also have it that the upcoming console will support 1080p gameplay with Ray Tracing. There have also been speculations that the device may be equipped with a processor based on 5nm or 8nm node. 

Today’s leak on the Nintendo Switch 2’s arrival this year isn’t the first time we are hearing. Another analyst earlier this month claimed that it could debut this year priced around the $400 mark.

Furthermore, both performance expectations in games and among gamers are quite high. However, a recent leak suggests that the Japanese game developer may not be too concerned about this situation, as the Switch 2 might lack special hardware to run DLSS. Here are the details…

Resolution Ceiling for Nintendo Switch 2 May Hit 1080p/1440p Without DLA

Unfortunately, we don’t know much about Nintendo Switch 2 yet. However, one thing we do know is that it will incorporate the T239 chipset, which significantly outperforms the Nvidia Tegra X1 and X1+ found in current handhelds. The use of Nvidia technologies is crucial at this point because the issue goes beyond just graphics. Nintendo, aiming to prolong the console’s lifespan, wants to leverage artificial intelligence technologies like DLSS.

However, according to emerging information, the company is avoiding spending money on DLA (Deep Learning Accelerator) that directly influences DLSS performance. For those unfamiliar, DLA, or Deep Learning Accelerator, is a specialized processor designed to help GPUs perform deep learning tasks more efficiently. It is particularly critical for enhancing the performance of DLSS. DLSS renders the game image at a lower resolution and then uses DLA to recreate the image at a higher resolution.

This allows games to be displayed at higher resolutions with higher frame rates. In summary, DLA transforms DLSS into a more efficient and powerful technology, delivering better image quality. Unfortunately, the alleged T234 chip that the company is rumored to use does not support this technology. This directly implies that the handheld will not be able to provide a 4K 60 FPS gaming experience. If the claims are accurate, without DLA, Nintendo Switch 2 will be limited to running games at 1080p or at best 1440p resolution.

Unfortunately, we currently lack more information on this matter. Perhaps the only thing we can do is wait for new leaks and the console expected to be unveiled in the first quarter of 2024.
