NIO smartphone will launch in 2023

NIO has recently released a render of its upcoming smartphone, the NIO Phone. According to the company’s statement, the phone is expected to be released in the third quarter of the year and will have a circular camera module on the back and a triangular camera distribution. The phone is designed with rounded edges and the NIO logo is located on the lower half of the device.

However, the design of the phone has received mixed reviews from the public. The dividing line between EV manufacturing and mobile technologies can be a fuzzy one. Some tech brands have mooted diversifying to EV manufacturing. Now, popular Chinese EV company Nio has entered the mobile technology space. The incorporation of Nio Mobile Technologies Co. Ltd is now official. The entity is wholly owned by Nio and it has scaled the needed regulatory requirements. The new company has a registered capital of $100 million.

The legal representative of the new Nio tech company is Qin Lihong, Nio’s co-founder and current president. The registered address of Nio Mobile Technologies is the global HQ of Nio in Anting, Shanghai. The new company is officially a software developer and AI hardware developer. It is the first of Nio’s growing subsidiaries that specifically targets the mobile tech business. The rumored Nio phone is speculated to arrive next year. The Nio CEO was earlier quoted as saying that the company is planning to develop a mobile phone that will launch once a year.

Nio already has substantial capabilities in mobile technologies through its highly connected Nio EVs. The models take full advantage of advanced technologies to deliver a great experience using the Nio EVs. It is expected that the Nio phone when it arrives, will fit snugly into the Nio ecosystem and deliver a seamless driving experience. There is no definitive official statement from Nio yet on its smartphone plans.

NIO ES8 electric SUV officially receives approval for sale in Europe

Earlier this month, NIO announced that it has officially received the European Whole Vehicle Type Approval (EWVTA) for its latest flagship electric SUV, the ES8. The EWVTA certification marks a foundation for the entry of the company into the Norway and the overall European market.

Furthermore, the NIO ES8 for Europe has officially approved for mass production and license plate registration in all EU countries. Back in May 2021, the Chinese automobile maker also announced its entry into Norway, which marks the first time the company is selling its vehicles outside of its home country of China. The company will be selling its first model, the ES8, in September of this year.

Additionally, the company will also offer Norwegian users its direct sales and service network encompassing NIO House, its in house App for European users, Power Swap Stations, and NIO Life. With the electric vehicle market seeing a rise in demand in the automobile market, the Chinese brand’s entry into the region could have it become a major player in the region. Just earlier this month, we had reported on the brand seeing massive surge in sales of its electric vehicles, so it is clear that the brand is looking to expand its presence in foreign markets as well.

NIO records a massive increase in EV sales, ships 6,711 units in May 2021

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer NIO has released its output figures for last month, May 2021. According to a press release circulated today, the company delivered 6,711 electric vehicles which reflected a massive increase of 95.3% from the corresponding month last year.

The May 2021 figure follows the projections of achieving up to 22,000 deliveries by the end of Q2, 2021 even though the company continues to grapple with the challenges of the global chip shortage. Added to the chip demand glut, are a few logistic challenges for the company that has slightly affected its growth outlook. The breakdown of the 6,711 deliveries shows that the all-new ES8s accounted for about 21%, while 45% of the deliveries were the ES6s. The EC6s accounted for the remaining 34% of the deliveries. The ES8 is NIO’s flagship premium smart electric SUV. It has both a six-seater and seven-seater model. The ES6 is a five-seater high-performance smart electric SUV, while the EC6 is a five-seater coupe SUV.

The New York Stock Exchange-listed electric vehicle manufacturer says the total cumulative deliveries of the three models have reached 109,514 as of the end of May 2021. The company hopes to overcome the logistical and chip challenges to bolster its production numbers for June to meet the Q2 target by the end of the month.
