Nio is gearing up for a significant update next month, considering the introduction of new variants with shorter ranges for its existing models. The move comes as the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer faces headwinds in the competitive market. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has included Nio’s eight on-sale models in a regulatory catalog, rendering them eligible for vehicle purchase tax reductions.

While the available battery packs for Nio’s models retain their capacities (ranging from 70-kWh to 150-kWh), the introduction of new options with significantly lower ranges is noteworthy. The 70-kWh and 75-kWh packs represent standard range options, utilizing Li-ion ternary battery technology. The 100-kWh pack caters to long-range capabilities, while the 150-kWh pack, a semi-solid-state battery, is not yet integrated into the battery swap system.

source: Nio.com

The adjustment in the minimum Chinese Long-Term Cruising (CLTC) range for various models suggests a strategic move by Nio to potentially lower both range and price. Reports hint at the possibility of Nio offering battery packs with a 50-kWh capacity, termed “city-class range,” derived from the standard range battery packs. This strategic decision may aim to reduce the barrier to purchase, expanding sales without causing significant dissatisfaction among existing customers.

Despite a challenging January that saw Nio’s stock decline by 38%, the company delivered over 10,000 vehicles, reflecting an 18.21% increase from the previous year. The recent downturn in stock prices is attributed to intense competition in the Chinese EV market, with larger players like Tesla and BYD initiating price wars, impacting smaller players’ pricing power.

Nio, along with XPeng and Li Auto, reported record deliveries of nearly 88,500 units in December 2023, marking a third consecutive monthly record. However, the positive delivery results did not prevent a decline in stock prices as investors chose to sell the news. The current market conditions, characterized by a slowdown in China’s economic recovery, have affected consumer spending on expensive electric cars.

Nio’s challenges and opportunities in the evolving Chinese EV market remain crucial for its long-term success. The company’s positive trend in weekly registrations, amidst competition and the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, suggests efforts to sell inventories before the anticipated business hiatus in China.

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer NIO, has successfully doubled the coverage of its Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) capabilities on urban roads in China. As of the end of January, the Navigate on Pilot Plus (NOP+) urban road coverage reached an impressive 651,640 kilometers, marking a remarkable growth of 103.75% from the previous month.

The NOP+ coverage expansion is particularly noteworthy, demonstrating a gain of 331,819 kilometers in January alone. This surge brings the total coverage to over 1 million kilometers when considering highways and urban expressways. The city-specific achievements are equally impressive, with NOP+ achieving 99.2% coverage of Shanghai’s main roads and 93% coverage of the entire road network. Other cities with high NIO vehicle ownership, including Beijing, Zhengzhou, Chengdu, and Suzhou, showcase ultra-high-density coverage.

source: nio.com

The growth extends beyond geographical reach. The number of cities covered by NOP+ soared from 208 at the end of December to an impressive 606 by the end of January. Importantly, NOP+ now encompasses all cities in China’s 34 first-tier administrative regions, excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

In tandem with these technological advancements, NIO delivered 10,055 electric vehicles in January 2024, marking an 18.2% increase from last year. However, the month-on-month comparison reveals a 44% decline, aligning with market expectations. The cumulative deliveries reached an impressive 459,649 as of January 31, 2024, with the impact of the Chinese New Year falling on February 10 creating a temporary anomaly in year-on-year comparisons.

Breaking down the deliveries, 6,307 SUVs and 3,748 sedans were included in January’s figures, with the Nio ES6 SUV contributing 40% of sales. The ET5 and its station wagon variant, ET5 Touring, accounted for nearly 30% of sales. Nio’s battery swap alliance continues to expand, with notable members including Geely, Changan, JAC, and Chery.

Looking ahead, NIO’s plans for 2024 include no new model launches, but annual updates for the existing lineup are expected. The highly anticipated executive sedan ET9 is set to launch in early 2025, with the entry-level Alps brand unveiling in March or April 2024, and deliveries scheduled for later in the year. Nio aims to launch its second sub-brand, Firefly, focusing on small electric cars in 2025.

With an expanding sales team and the launch of the ALPS sub-brand anticipated to stimulate growth, NIO remains at the forefront of the evolving electric vehicle landscape. The pre-market trading reflects the market response, with NIO shares up by 2.67%.

In what can be termed a freak accident, the driver of the Nio test vehicle lost control of the vehicle and smashed through the glass windows before plunging to the ground. There were no reported casualties on the ground, fortunately. Nio is a Chinese EV company and the incident happened on June 22. Nio has confirmed the incident and says preliminary investigations indicate that no flaws were discovered in the test vehicle.

A comprehensive investigation of the incident will reveal the probable cause of the crash. The news of the crash was first aired by state-owned Shanghai Television. Regulatory authorities are yet to make any public pronouncements on the crash. It however raises safety concerns that have remained with the development of autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles.

Even at that, the market is entirely a new one and so the company cannot be said to be in the league of Tesla or even Apple, ranked as one of the world’s most valuable companies. Turns out the Chinese EV manufacturer is looking at taking on Apple in the smartphone segment. A recent disclosure by NIO’s CEO William Li indicates that the company is working towards making an entrance into the smartphone market.

NIO EC6

Li had recently affirmed that the brand’s foray into the smartphone market is still steaming at the research phase but the CEO has confirmed that producing its own smartphones is definitely on the radar. The plan is hinged on a lofty aspiration which is to become one of Apple’s rivals in the future. While some may be a tall order, we should remind our readers that Apple is also planning to enter the EV market. Thus, we may likely see Apple becoming a force to reckon with the electric vehicles market before NIO will be able to make any meaningful headway.

However, the Chinese EV manufacturer which opened shop in 2014 has been blazing the trail as one of the foremost EV brands with models such as the ES8, ES6, and EC6 electric SUVs. Therefore, the brand may have something special up its sleeves.

Apart from its SUV lineup, NIO also has a couple of electric sedans including the ET7 released recently and the ET5 which is still in the works. The brand’s EVs are equipped with stellar features that have made it the toast of buyers in China and even in some parts of Europe such as Norway and Germany.

The brand’s CEO is reported to have stated that the drive to enter the smartphone market was due to yearnings by NIO customers for a phone that connects better with cars. One question that would readily come to mind is why the company didn’t make its software integrate seamlessly with Android and iOS phones. NIO’s CEO answered this recently when he disclosed that the brand’s latest EVs come with ultra-wideband (UWB) technology but Apple does not offer an open interface. With such a scenario, it would be difficult to design features for NIO EV owners who use Apple phones.

This move is also aimed at mitigating the shockwave that could result from Apple announcing its own electric car in the near future. Because the company can utilize its closed-source UWB to provide integrated features between its phones and cars, that could give it a bigger edge that could help it win some market shares off already existing brands like NIO.

In a sort of reverse order, Chinese phone manufacturer, Xiaomi is looking to enter the EV market in 2024 and has already commenced the construction of a car manufacturing plant capable of rolling out 300,000 EVs annually. Foxconn and Baidu are also among the Chinese companies attempting to enter the EV market.

The May 2021 figure follows the projections of achieving up to 22,000 deliveries by the end of Q2, 2021 even though the company continues to grapple with the challenges of the global chip shortage. Added to the chip demand glut, are a few logistic challenges for the company that has slightly affected its growth outlook. The breakdown of the 6,711 deliveries shows that the all-new ES8s accounted for about 21%, while 45% of the deliveries were the ES6s. The EC6s accounted for the remaining 34% of the deliveries. The ES8 is NIO’s flagship premium smart electric SUV. It has both a six-seater and seven-seater model. The ES6 is a five-seater high-performance smart electric SUV, while the EC6 is a five-seater coupe SUV.

The New York Stock Exchange-listed electric vehicle manufacturer says the total cumulative deliveries of the three models have reached 109,514 as of the end of May 2021. The company hopes to overcome the logistical and chip challenges to bolster its production numbers for June to meet the Q2 target by the end of the month.
