Huawei’s proprietary NM card is finally getting support from prominent storage card manufacturers. After the span of 5 years, Lexar has hoped onto the NM card format manufacturing considering the increasing popularity of Huawei smartphones.

Lexar 512GB NM Card Features

Lexar introduces a 512GB NM card for Huawei devices. The card can easily fit inside the nano-SIM slot, thanks to its compact size. The pricing and availability details about the new card are not yet live. However, it is expected to feature a price tag of $100, if we consider the pricing of already available 256GB NM cards on Vmall and other retailers.

Lexar NM Card supports eMMC 5.1 protocol which offers reading and writing speeds of 90MB/s and 85MB/s, respectively. The storage isn’t that fast enough that it can compete with the internal storage of smartphones, but can record 4K videos and store other stuff doesn’t eh board?

There will be 128 GB and 256 GB NM cards too, but only the 512GB Lexar card is tested and verified by Huawei Laboratory and Lexar Quality Laboratory.

The Lexar 512GB NM card will be made available via Huawei Mall and Huawei Offline stores.

Other major companies are yet to join the NM Card development, but increasing sales of Huawei Smartphones will make them embrace the development sooner. Apart from the market demand, its complex design and dense storage units require advanced manufacturing technology are some other reasons that prevent the manufacturers from developing NM cards.

Huawei’s Market Trend

Huawei is continuously gaining momentum in the smartphone market with significant sales over the past few months. Thanks to the newly launched flagship smartphones such as the P60 series, Mate60 series, and foldable Mate X3. Huawei’s H1 2023 revenue from terminal devices increased by 2.2% year-on-year basis.

When Huawei announced the Mate 20 series back in 2018, it unveiled the NM Card or Nano Memory Card. This is an SD card that is the same size as a nano-SIM. NM Cards do not require a dedicated slot as they fit into the same slot for a nano-SIM which most phones use these days. Huawei hoped more manufacturers would adopt the new memory card but up until now, it is only used by Huawei phones.

Huawei itself makes NM cards but no big-name manufacturer has done so up until now. Lexar, the company known for its wide range of storage products has announced three new NM cards for Huawei phones which should be widely available compared to Huawei’s own.

The Lexar nCard as it is called is available in three variants – 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. They have a read speed of 90MB/s and a write speed of 70MB/s. The nCard is available on Jingdong Mall for ¥199 (~$28) for the 64GB version, ¥299 (~$42) for the 128GB capacity, and ¥599 (~$84) for the 256GB capacity. It is also available on AliExpress.

The NM card works with the Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, Huawei P30, Huawei P30 Pro, Mate 30, Mate 30 Pro, etc. If more phone manufacturers adopt the standard then more companies that make storage devices such as SanDisk and Samsung should begin manufacturing NM cards too. We also expect the price to reduce when that happens. However, the adoption rate is practically non-existent at the moment.

Huawei unveiled newfangled expandable storage dubbed the Nano Memory (NM) card during the Mate 20 series launch event in October 2018. The first benchmarks of a 128GB NM card surfaced online soon after the announcement, showing performance similar to that of a microSD card.

One of the USPs (unique selling propositions) of the NM cards is that it is housed in a 45 percent smaller form factor as compared to microSD cards, which means, it can easily fit in a smartphone’s Nano-SIM slot. The 128GB, as well the 256GB Huawei NM Card variants are now available for lowered prices on Giztop.

The 128GB storage Huawei NM Card would normally set you back $74.99, but you can purchase it for just $63.99 from the popular Chinese e-tailer. Alternatively, you can go for the larger 256GB storage model that usually retails for $119.99, but can now be yours for a lowered price of just $108.99.

Those willing to shell out $15.99 extra, can get a 2-in-1 NM/microSD card reader as well. The Original Huawei NM Card fits the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro’s dual-SIM card slot, allowing users the options to install either a second SIM card or an NM card for storage.

In addition to the aforesaid capacities (i.e. 128GB and 256GB), the new NM Card is also available in 64GB storage capacity. Manufactured by Toshiba, the new NM card is designed to fit into the dual nano-SIM hybrid slot of the Mate 20 series phones.

Offering read transfer speeds of 90MB/s, the NM card works specifically on hybrid dual SIM slots. It also works with Mate 20 X, Mate 20 Pro, P30, P30 Pro, Nova5 and the Nova5 Pro smartphones.
