After the Pixel devices, the search engine giant is expected to make the Android 9 Pie to devices that are listed under Android One program. Since HMD Global had confirmed at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 that all Nokia smartphones above Nokia 2 will join the Android One program, many Nokia phones are expected to receive Android 9 Pie update earlier than other smartphones from other companies. Today, through an official blog post, Google has confirmed that all the Android One devices and other phones that have joined the Android P Beta program will be treated with Android 9 Pie by the end of the fall.

All the Nokia Android One phones that are slated to receive the Android 9 Pie update Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 6 (2018), Nokia 6.1 Plus (Nokia X6), Nokia 5.1 Plus (Nokia X5), Nokia 5.1, Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 2.1. Among these, the Nokia 7 Plus is expected to get the final Android P update by the end of this month since it is one of the smartphones that have been enrolled in the Android P beta program.

Apart from Android One phones by HMD Global, other Nokia phones are also confirmed to receive Android P update. Around two months ago, Neil Broadley who is the global market manager of HMD Global had said that the Android P will be made available to entire Nokia portfolio. These means that other older Nokia phone such as Nokia 8, Nokia 7, Nokia 6, Nokia 5, Nokia 3, Nokia 2 and Nokia 1 will be also treated with Android 9 Pie. However, as mentioned above, Nokia Android One phones will be the first ones to be blessed with Android Pie.

The company is now making these phones available in wider markets. Fresh information claims that the Finnish firm is prepping up to launch these phones in India starting from next month.

India is one of the top three markets through which HMD Global is generating its revenue. Hence, HMD Global CEO Florian Sieche is aiming to rank Nokia among the top five phone brands in the country. This year the company will be investing more on retail presence, consumer engagement and advertising.

HMD Global India head Ajay Mehta is of the view that offline channel is the core strength of the company. Hence, the firm will be aiming to increase the visibility of the brand this year by increasing the retail presence by 10 percent. He added that online sales is around 30 percent of market, but it is integral to sell its devices through e-commerce sites to become of the top ranking smartphone brands in India. At present the Finnish firm is in talks with its manufacturing partner Foxconn to ramp up the manufacturing of existing Nokia smartphones and feature phones in India.

It is almost confirmed that the Nokia 9 would be among the debutants and very recently, the Nokia 1 and Nokia 7 Plus built under the Android Go project popped up online. A new Nokia model identified as Nokia TA-1071 has now been certified by FCC.

The FCC listing was accompanied by a sketch of the device having its dimension written as well. The outlines and dimensions have all the dressing of the Android One-powered Nokia 1 based on the press render we had seen in the past. Talking about the dimensions, the Nokia 1 will be 134 mm tall and 50 mm wide with a diagonal of 136 mm, equivalent to around 5.35 inches. The Nokia 1’s display may, however, come in at around 5 inches considering that bezels would occupy some part of the screen. The FCC listing also shows the presence of Bluetooth 4.0, 4G LTE and WiFi 2.4 GHz availability.

The Nokia 1 is expected to be an entry-level device which should make it very cheap, perhaps cheaper than the $99 price tag of the Nokia 2. The device will feature a 16:9 display, a single rear camera with LED flash as well as a selfie shooter. Other details are still sketchy as of now.

Belonging to the latter category is the Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 4, and Nokia 1.

The Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 1 have appeared in the news more times since their first reveal and today we get to see the first official renders of both devices thanks to Evan Blass.

Nokia 7 Plus

The Nokia 7 Plus is familiar as it has appeared in a few leaked photos before but this new leak is much more different as it reveals a key info.

This new render reveals the Nokia 7 Plus will be an Android One device! Guess you didn’t see that coming.

Since, Nokia phones sold in China run a different version of Android from those sold in other countries, it is safe to presume that the Nokia 7 Plus that will be sold there won’t be the Android One variant which is why we didn’t know about it before.

So those first leaked images we saw of the Nokia 7 Plus which also listed the specs are those of the Chinese variant while this Android One Nokia 7 Plus is the international variant that will be sold outside China.

The Nokia 7 Plus is shown in white in the image above with orange accents around the dual Carl Zeiss lenses, the fingerprint scanner, and the display. The Nokia logo and the physical buttons are also orange.

We also get a closer look at the 18:9 display of the phone. As you can see, the corners are rounded.

Nokia 1

While the Nokia 7 Plus is an Android One phone, the Nokia 1 is rumored to be an Android Go phone. Android Go or Android Oreo (Go Edition) is a lightweight version of Android for phones with 1GB RAM or less which is what the Nokia 1 is expected to come with.

From the leaked render we can see the Nokia 1 isn’t going to get shortlisted for its looks. The bezels around the screen which we guess is between 4 – 5 inches are super huge like those on the first Android smartphones from years ago.

There is a front facing camera on the top left corner and beside it is a pill-shaped sensor. Sitting in the middle is the earpiece.

On the rear, the Nokia 1 is shown to have a single rear camera with a large LED flash. The camera sits in the middle of the phone. At the bottom right corner is an opening for the speaker.

While the phone isn’t attractive, it appears to be well made and should be able to take a beating.

The Nokia 1 is shown in two color variants – indigo and bright red. Both variants have silver accents around the bezels and rear camera. The buttons and Nokia logo are also in silver.

Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 1 Launch Date

While this may be easy to miss, both phone actually tease their launch dates on the homescreen. For the Nokia 7 Plus, the date is Sunday, February 25, while for the Nokia 1, the date is Monday, February 26.

Although, MWC 2018 officially begins on the 26th of February, manufacturers already start announcing their phones during the weekend. So you shouldn’t be surprised that the Nokia 7 Plus is launching on a Sunday, plus this is not HMD Global’s first launch on a weekend. The first-gen Nokia 6 was announced on a Sunday too.

The expected list of devices include Nokia 1, Nokia 6 (2018), and Nokia 8 Sirocco.

While the devices will get announced later this month, they won’t be launched in the Indian market soon. A report suggests that the Nokia 1, Nokia 6 (2018) and the Nokia 8 Sirocco will make their way to the Indian market in the month of April.

The report further adds that along with these three devices, the company could also launched a couple of more devices in the Indian market. However, HMD Global has not yet confirmed any of these devices for the MWC 2018 launch.

The Nokia 1 could be the company’s most affordable smartphone and is expected to be the part of Google’s Android Go program. The Android Oreo Go edition has been optimized to support hardware with low-end specifications without compromising on user experience.

According to the previous reports, the Nokia 1 is expected to come with an HD IPS LCD display and run either Qualcomm or MediaTek processor along with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. The device is expected to be priced around Rs. 6,500 in the Indian market.

At the upcoming MWC in Barcelona, the company is expected to announce Nokia 6 (2018) globally, which is already available in China. This second-generation Nokia 6 comes with a 5.5-inch full HD LCD display with an aspect ratio of 16:9 and screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It sits well protected under 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

Under the hood, it is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor and packs 4GB RAM with 32GB/64GB of internal storage. At the back, there’s a dual-LED enabled 16-megapixel camera and an 8-megapixel 84-degree wide-angle front-facing snapper.

The Nokia 8 Sirocco, which is also referred as Nokia 9, is expected to be the premium offering from the company. It is believed to be a high-end phone running the latest Snapdragon 845 processor. It is likely to feature a 5.5-inch Quad HD OLED display with 3D glass on top.

Reports suggests that the device will pack dual ZEISS-certified cameras at the back, having a combination of 12-megapixel sensor and a 13-megapixel sensor. On the front, there will be a 5-megapixel selfie camera. As per the reports, the device is expected to arrive with IP67 certification for dust and water resistance.

The device has already passed FCC certification and from the listing, it seems that it will be an entry-level phone.

The device could possibly be the Nokia 1 — the Android Go smartphone that HMD Global is reportedly working on. The FCC listing reveals that the phone with model number TA-1056 is smaller in size compared to Nokia 2. While the Nokia 2 measures 143.5mm tall and 71.3 mm wide, this upcoming device measures 133mm tall and 68mm wide.

Going by the phone’s size, there’s a possibility that the device could come with the trendy full-screen display with 18:9 aspect ratio. Since the FCC info label is placed inside the battery compartment, it is expected that the phone will have a removable battery.

Based on the previous reports, the Nokia 1 is expected to be available from the first half of 2018. According to some reports, it will be available in Russia from March 2018 and could be priced around 5,999 rubles (approximately $104).

Previous leaks and reports suggest that the Nokia 1 could feature an HD IPS display with just 1GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage. Given that the device will be powered by the Android Go edition, and since Google has already announced watered down versions of its applications, the phone is expected to provide decent performance.

At this time, there is no information available regarding the processor. But the company could opt for either Qualcomm or MediaTek as both companies have announced their support for Android Oreo (Go Edition).

HMD Global has sent out media invites for its event at Mobile World Congress, where the company is expected to announce a range of devices, including Nokia 9 and a revamped Nokia 8.

The invitation also includes a link for those who are interested to attend the event to register for seat reservation.

HMD Global did not reveal the product that would be launched on that day in the poster, but the poster indicated that the event was for an intimate and exclusive unveiling of the next chapter of Nokia phone’s story. What we can grab from this is that we may likely see the launch of Nokia’s next flagship phone- the Nokia 9 among others. Earlier on Thursday, HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas hinted that the company had something major planned for MWC 2018.

Sorry for radio silence. Been super busy planning #MWC2018 .
Apart from the flagship Nokia 9, HMD Global could also take the wraps off Nokia 1 as well as the Nokia 6 (2018) for the global market, Nokia 3310 4G and perhaps, the Nokia 7 which has only been launched in China. It would be recalled that last year’s MWC saw a flurry of smartphone launch by the tech giant including the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and the redesigned Nokia 3310 feature phone. Apart from smartphones, the poster seems to suggest Nokia will launch a smart home product at the event. We are not so sure about that anyway, so we’ll wait until the event to find out.

Fresh photos of the entry-level smartphone have surfaced from China to reveal its design.

The following snapshots show two similar looking phones. The alleged Nokia 1 in the first photo seems to be placed inside a case whereas the second image seems to show the actual handset. The body of the phone appears to be made out of plastic. The back panel has a camera sensor that is coupled with a LED flash.

The Nokia 1 is expected to feature a display that will carry support for HD resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. However, the exact size of the screen is not known. It will be packed with 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of native storage. It is speculated to be driven by Snapdragon 212 chipset that is present under the hood of the Nokia 2 phone.

The search engine giant has begun this program to release Android Go phones in emerging markets. According to Factor Daily, Google has struck a deal with some of Indian smartphone brands such as Micromax, Intex, Lava, Karbonn and others to release Android Go (Android Oreo edition) phones worth around Rs. 2,000 (~$30) in India starting from this month.

Android Oreo is the most recent version of Google’s operating system for smartphone. The Android Go version of Android Oreo is expected to run on phones with less than 1 GB of RAM. The Android Go phones will come loaded with some Go (lightweight) versions of its apps such as Google Apps, Google Play Store, Maps, YouTube, Gmail, Google Assistant and more.

An unnamed official from Google has claimed that Android Go devices will launch in early 2018. It is speculated that Micromax could become the first brand to launch an Android Go phone in India. It is expected to unveil its Android Go smartphone at some point around the Republic Day (Jan. 26) of the country. Other Indian brands are expected to release their Android Go phones in the weeks later. It is appears that these phones will be enabled with 4G LTE. Since the rumored Nokia 1 is expected to arrive as an Android Go phone, it is likely to cost around Rs. 2,000 (~$30) in India.

In the recent past, the popularity of Chinese smartphone vendors has increased significantly in India. Xiaomi has recently dethroned Samsung to gain the number one spot in the Indian market. Other brands like OPPO and Vivo are also immensely popular in India. Two years ago, Indian smartphone makers accounted 50 percent of the market share in India. According to a recent IDC survey, the market share of Indian smartphone manufacturers is 15 percent.

When Google CEO Sundar Pichai had come to India in 2017, he had said that $30 phone is the best price point for smartphones in India. The Android Go will certainly allow Indian smartphone vendors to increase their market share in the country.

The phone, dubbed as Nokia 1, will reportedly be a part of Google’s Android Go program.

The Nokia 1 is expected to be available from the first half of 2018. According to the reports, it will be available in Russia from March 2018 and could be priced around 5,999 rubles (approximately $104).

Since the phone is said to be the part of Android Go program, which is aimed at emerging markets such as India, there is a strong possibility that the device will also be made available in India quickly after launch.

The Nokia 1 is expected to feature an HD IPS display with a screen resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. It is said to come with just 1GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage. Given that the device will be powered by the Android Go edition, and since Google has already announced watered down versions of its applications, the phone will provide decent performance.

There is no information available regarding the processor. But the company could opt for either Qualcomm or MediaTek as both companies have announced their support for Android Oreo (Go Edition).

At the time of announcing Android Go edition, Google said that it is meant for devices with 512MB to 1GB of RAM. Google has officially confirmed that there would be a lot of Android Oreo Go Edition phones coming in early 2018.

Next year, along with Nokia, China-based Huawei will also reportedly launch an Android Go phone. The smartphone from Huawei is said to come with specifications similar to the Nokia 1 and is expected to be priced around $85.

Currently, HMD Global’s cheapest smartphone is Nokia 2, which was launched in October. The phone, priced at around 99 Euros, features a 5-inch HD LTPS display and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 processor. It packs 1GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage.

There is an 8-megapixel rear-facing autofocus camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. Nokia has also included “Bothie” feature that enables users to use both front and rear cameras simultaneously.

It comes with IP52 certification, meaning that the device is splash proof. The Nokia 2 smartphone runs on the stock version of Android 7.0 Nougat operating system out-of-the-box and comes with Google Assistant. The company has promised to soon update the device with Android 8.0 Oreo.
