HMD Global is committed to rolling out Android 10 to its eligible devices. So far, more than 10 of its phones have been upgraded including its entry-level Nokia 1 Plus which got upgraded to Android 10 go. Today, it is the turn of the Nokia 3.1 Plus.

The Nokia 3.1 Plus was announced back in October 2018 with Android 8.1 Oreo pre-installed. It later got upgraded to Android 9 Pie last year. The Android 10 update is its second OS upgrade. Going by the manufacturer’s promise of three years of software support, the Nokia 3.1 Plus should be eligible for Android 11 when it is released.

Android 10 brings new features such as Smart Reply, new gesture-based navigation, dark mode, and more. The changelog says the update comes with April 2020’s security patch. However, it is a bit heavy at 1.24GB.

The update is expected to roll-out to 10% of devices today, 50% by May 16, and 100% by May 18. If you do not get it today, you should receive it on or before next Monday.

The Nokia 3.1 Plus has a 6.0-inch display with an HD+ resolution. It is powered by MediaTek’s Helio P22 processor and comes in 2GB and 3GB RAM variants with up to 32GB of storage. There is a dedicated MicroSD card slot if you wish to add more storage.

Other features include a 13MP + 5MP dual-camera setup on the back, an 8MP selfie camera, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, NFC, FM radio, and a 3500mAh battery with support for 10W wired charging.

The official Nokia Twitter account says the update is coming soon to the Nokia 5.1 Plus. So if you own this phone, you need to be patient.

The Nokia 3.1 Plus was launched in October 2018. When it was announced, Google had already released Android Pie but it came with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. Today, HMD Global’s Chief Product officer has announced that the Android Pie update is already rolling out to the phone.

The changelog for the update which is 1182MB in size is below:

• New system navigation, settings menu, and notifications.

The Nokia 3.1 Plus has a 3.0-inch HD+ display and unlike the other Plus models,  it doesn’t have a notch. It is powered by the Helio P22 processor which is paired with 2GB/3GB of RAM and 16GB/32GB of expandable storage.

HMD Global is one of the top manufacturers when it comes to speed of updates. A large percentage of its phones are already running Android 9 Pie, the latest version of Android. It appears that update may soon arrive for the Nokia 3.1 Plus.

A version of the Nokia 3.1 Plus running Android 9 was seen on Geekbench yesterday. Since the phone is currently still running Android Oreo, this might be an indication that the update to Pie is on the horizon.

The phone just received January’s security update a few days ago. We presume Android Pie will likely be bundled with February’s security update next month.

The Nokia 3.1 Plus was first announced in India last year. It has a 6.0-inch HD+ display, a MediaTek Helio P22 processor, 2GB/3GB of RAM, and 16GB/32GB of storage. A few months ago, HMD Global launched the Nokia 3.1 Plus smartphone in the Indian market for a price of Rs. 11,499, which roughly converts to $154. Now, the device has received a price cut of Rs. 1,500 in India and will now cost Rs. 9,999 (approximately $140).

The Nokia 3.1 Plus is also receiving a new update and the changelog says that the phone is receiving the latest January 2019 security patch. The update changelog from the company doesn’t mention any feature addition or bug fixes.

The latest Android security patch rollout for the Nokia 3.1 Plus comes after Finland-based HMD Global released the same security patch for the Nokia 6 and Nokia 7.1 smartphones. While the company didn’t mention, users reported that the new update brought back the option to hide the notch on Nokia 7.1.

The update, which is about 70MB in size, is currently being rolled out over-the-air (OTA) but in case you don’t receive OTA notification anytime soon, you can check for the update manually through going to Settings and searching system updates.

The Nokia 3.1 Plus features a 5.99-inch HD+ IPS display that offers a screen resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels and 18:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, the device is powered by MediaTek P22 octa-core chipset which is manufactured using the 12nm process. This is the same chipset that powers the Xiaomi Redmi 6 smartphone.

The device comes with 3GB RAM + 32GB internal storage and a dedicated microSD card slot, enabling users to further expand the phone’s storage capacity. In terms of optics, the smartphone features a dual camera setup on the back, offering a 13-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor.

For taking selfies, it comes with an 8-megapixel front-facing snapper. Both cameras come with support for live bokeh or Portrait mode for capturing images with blurred background. As for the software, just like other Nokia smartphones, this one too is a part of Google‘s Android One programme and is promised to receive monthly security updates. It runs the latest Android Pie operating system out-of-the-box.

Nokia’s latest entry-level offering, the Nokia 3.1 Plus is finally official in China. The phone was launched in India back in October and nearly after a month of its release, the phone finally reaches its neighbor. Specs remain unchanged on the new model, so what we are basically interested in is its price tag.

The Nokia 3.1 Plus is priced at 1099 Yuan ($158.6) which is quite close to the Indian pricing for the 3 + 32GB variant. The company is clearly looking for entry-level buyers with this positioning. The hardware inside the phone is pretty decent for its pricing. The phone features the octa-core Helio P22 chipset with MG PowerVR GE8320 GPU and a large 3500mAh battery. With the 6-inch HD+ display on board, you can easily expect more than a day’s usage on the device on a single charge.

The new Nokia model isn’t bad in the camera department as well. The phone features a 13MP f/2.0 aperture sensor at the back paired with a 5MP f/2.4 aperture sensor for good quality bokeh images. Note that users will be able to refocus their shots even after they are taken. On the front, there’s an 8MP shooter to take care of your selfie needs.

The Nokia 3.1 Plus comes in two colors, for now, White and Navy Blue.

On paper, the phone turns out to be quite well balanced. Further, you get the traditional 18:9 display design without a notch, which is a good alternative to the notch filled phones in the market lately.

It’s worth noting that for a couple of hundred Yuan (~$30) more, you get better devices like the new Honor 10 Lite with Kirin 710, Full HD+ display and 3400mAh battery. So, it’ll be interesting to see whether the phone manages to do well in the Chinese market.

Suning Tesco has released a new Weibo post through which it has confirmed that it will be carrying out the pre-orders of the Nokia 3.1 Plus smartphone on Nov. 22. This confirms that the new Nokia smartphone will go official in China on the same date.

HMD Global had launched Nokia 3.1 Plus smartphone in India on Oct. 11. Soon after its Indian launch, the  smartphone was spotted on TENAA with full specifications which suggested that the phone may soon launch in China. As of this writing, there is no information available on the pricing of the smartphone for the Chinese market. In India, the handset is selling with a starting price of Rs. 9,499 (~$133). The Finnish firm is known for selling its smartphones with cheaper price tags in China. Hence, the Nokia 3.1 Plus may cost 899 Yuan (~$129) in the country.

The Nokia 3.1 Plus comes with a 5.99-inch IPS LCD screen that produces 18:9 aspect ratio and HD+ resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels. The Helio P22 chipset powers the phone along with 3 GB of RAM. It comes with a native storage of 32 GB. The phone features a microSD card slot for additional storage.

The 13-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera setup is placed on the rear shell of the Nokia 3.1 Plus. The back panel of the phone is also fitted with a fingerprint scanner. The handset draws power from 3,500mAh battery. It is yet another Android One smartphone from the company. The phone comes loaded with stock edition of the Android 8.1 Oreo OS.

In India, the Nokia 3.1 Plus comes in two models. The base edition of the phone includes 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of native storage. It is priced at Rs. 9,499 (~$133). The higher model features 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. It carries a price tag of Rs. 11,499 (~$160).

According to the TENAA listing of the phone, the Nokia 3.1 Plus will be hitting China in 2 GB RAM + 16 GB storage and 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage versions. It will be available in White and Blue color options. These models may carry respective price tags of 899 Yuan and 999 Yuan in China.

In the previous week, HMD Global had launched the Nokia 3.1 Plus smartphone in India. Soon after its Indian launch, the smartphone that bears a model number of TA-1117 was spotted on the website of China’s TENAA telecom authority. The specifications of the smartphone is yet to appear on the TENAA listing, but it does include its images.

The Nokia 3.1 Plus TENAA images show that the handset is equipped with a tall aspect ratio display at the front. The back panel of the phone features a vertical dual camera setup followed by an LED flash and a fingerprint reader.

As far as the specifications of the Nokia 3.1 Plus, they have been already through its Indian launch. It is a slightly advanced version of the Nokia 3.1 phone that was announced in May.

The Nokia 3.1 Plus is fitted with a 6-inch IPS LCD display that offers an aspect ratio of 18:9 and HD+ resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels. It measures 159 x 76.4 x 8.2mm and weighs 180 grams. The handset is fueled by MediaTek MT6762 (Helio P22) chipset that includes 2.0 GHz octa-core processor. It is packed with 3,500mAh battery.

The handset had landed in India in two models such as 32 GB storage + 3 GB RAM and 16 GB storage + 2 GB RAM. It features a microSD card slot for additional storage. For photography, it features f/2.0 aperture 13-megapixel primary sensor and f/2.4 aperture 5-megapixel depth sensor in its rear-mounted dual camera setup. An 8-megapixel f/2.2 aperture camera is present at the frontside of the phone. It is preinstalled with Android 8.1 Oreo OS.

HMD Global is yet to confirm on the launch date of Nokia 3.1 Plus for China. Currently, the company seems to be busy on releasing teasers for the upcoming Nokia X7 (Nokia 7.1 Plus) smartphone that is scheduled to go official. Probably, the Finnish firm will use the same platform to announce the Nokia 3.1 Plus or it could be unveiled separately.

In India, the Nokia 3.1 Plus has arrived in colors like Baltic, White and Blue. The base model of the smartphone is priced at Rs. 11,499 (~$156) in India. The handset may carry 999 Yuan pricing for the starting variant of the Nokia 3.1 Plus in China.

Design

The handset I personally like more than the others is Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro for two reasons. First, it has a more attractive design thanks to its bezel-less display and the elegant metal back. Second, it is more compact, so easier to use with one hand and to keep in a pocket. Huawei Honor 8C comes right after, while Nokia 3.1 Plus has a more classic design which brings nothing really innovative.

Display

Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro has the most exciting display as it is the only one to feature a Full HD+ resolution which provides a lot of detail more. On the other hand, it has the smallest display and you might not like it if you are an advanced user or a gamer. Nokia 3.1 Plus and Huawei Honor 8C have bigger displays, but their resolution is only 720p. So Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro wins.

Specs & Software

If performance is your main concern, then you should definitely go for the Huawei Honor 8C. It is the first smartphone to sport the new Snapdragon 632 chipset by Qualcomm which, according to the San Diego-based giant, will provide up to 40 percent better performance compared to Snapdragon 625 (present on the Redmi 6 Pro) and 626. Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro takes the second place, while Nokia 3.1 Plus is less powerful and it does not have a 4 GB of RAM version, unlike the others. While Honor 8C and Redmi 6 Pro come with customized user interfaces (EMUI and MIUI, Nokia 3.1 Plus has the stock Android One.

Camera

My favorite camera is the one on board of the Honor 8C due to its brighter aperture which allows achieving better results even when light conditions are not the best. And it is the same with the front camera which carries a resolution of 8 MP and can record videos with resolutions up to 1080p.

Battery

Despite Nokia 3.1 Plus is a bigger device, Huawei Honor 8C and Xiaomi Mi Redmi 6 Pro have the biggest batteries and they should last more. Given that Honor 8C was officially announced a few days ago, we had no chance to test its battery and we can not tell you which will last more between it and Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro.

Price

Nokia 3.1 Plus will soon hit the shelves with a price tag of $154/€133 in India, Honor 8C will sell for €136/$158 in China and Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro is currently available for about $150/€130 in the global market. In my opinion, Honor 8C is the most interesting device in this comparison, but there are very marginal differences between these devices, so there is not a real winner.

HMD Global has a new phone launching in India tomorrow. Most sites, including us, presumed it is for the launch of the Nokia 7.1 Plus but a new leak has revealed it is a different phone entirely – the Nokia 3.1 Plus.

An image showing the retail box of the phone has surfaced on the web and it also lists the specs of the device.

The Nokia 3.1 Plus will sport a 6-inch display with a 1440 x 720 resolution. It is a big upgrade from the Nokia 3.1‘s 5.2-inch HD+ screen which explains the Mega Display teasers. It also doesn’t have a notch.

The box also reveals the phone will come with a 13MP + 5MP dual camera combination on its rear. The image of the phone on the box shows the cameras are lined-up vertically and share the same housing with the LED flash. Right below the camera setup is a fingerprint scanner.

The Nokia 3.1 Plus will be powered by an unnamed octa-core processor, probably from MediaTek, and will have a 3,500mAh battery. The phone will run stock Android since it is an Android One phone like its siblings. However, we expect it to come with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box with a promised update to Android 9 Pie in future.

The Nokia 3.1 Plus is expected to be priced under INR. 10,000 (~$135) where it will slug it out with phones like the Realme C1 which has an INR. 6,999 (~$94) price tag. The Nokia 3.1 Plus will come in blue as shown on the box but there will definitely be other colors.
