Design

Meizu C9 has the cleanest and most interesting design, with narrower bezels around the display, but Nokia 3.1 is the most compact phone. All of these handsets are made of polycarbonate and do not feature a premium design, so you should make a choice based on your tastes. Xiaomi Redmi 6A is similar to full metal unibody phones and some may like it, but it is just plastic. On the other hand, it has the thinnest body with just 8.3 mm.

Display

Thanks to the IGZO technology, Meizu C9 can provide a better display quality which results in a high brightness, a fast response and less energy consumption. Nokia 3.1 has a smaller display which makes the phone more compact and easy to use with just one hand, and it is also the only one to feature the Gorilla Glass protection by Corning making it more resistant. Xiaomi Redmi 6A’s display has really nothing special, it is just a sufficient IPS entry-level panel.

Specs & Software

When it comes to hardware, the champion is definitely Xiaomi Redmi 6A because it is equipped with a more powerful SoC. We are talking about the Helio A22 by MediaTek running at a max frequency of 2 GHz and realized with a 12 nm production process. Further, Xiaomi Redmi 6A has a dedicated micro SD slot. Nokia 3.1 comes with a sufficient MediaTek SoC, while Meizu C9 has the new Unisoc SC9832E which does not seem so convincing with its 1.3 GHz. Note that while Xiaomi Redmi 6A and Meizu C9 have custom user interfaces (MIUI and Flyme OS), Nokia 3.1 comes with the stock Android One updated in a faster and more constant way directly by Google.

Camera

The most impressive camera department is the one on board of the Nokia 3.1. It features a rear 13 MP sensor with a f/2.0 and an 8 MP front camera with exactly the same aperture as well as the HDR technology. It is able to shoot better photos and selfies, but it still remains an entry-level camera phone. At the second place, we put Meizu C9 because of its pretty nice front camera for a device sold at just €60. The worst one seems to be the Xiaomi Redmi 6A because of its average selfie camera.

Battery

All of these devices provide more or less the same battery capacity and they can reach one day with a moderate use thanks to their well-optimized energy consumptions. We still did not test the Meizu C9, but the results obtained by Nokia 3.1 convinced us slightly less because it does not last very long in some scenarios. Usually, Xiaomi optimizes its phones better in terms of consumption, but we still have to see how Meizu C9 performs.

Price

After the first week, Meizu C9 will cost about €90, while Nokia 3.1 are available at prices of €90 and €150. The phone with the best value for money is currently the Xiaomi Redmi 6A, I would pick it for its good performance, its micro SD dedicated slot, and its long-lasting battery. But if you want a stock and bloatware-free operating system which gets faster updates, Nokia 3.1 is better. Even if it does not have the best hardware, the stock Android experience on a small and entry-level might make the difference for some users.

After the Pixel devices, the search engine giant is expected to make the Android 9 Pie to devices that are listed under Android One program. Since HMD Global had confirmed at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 that all Nokia smartphones above Nokia 2 will join the Android One program, many Nokia phones are expected to receive Android 9 Pie update earlier than other smartphones from other companies. Today, through an official blog post, Google has confirmed that all the Android One devices and other phones that have joined the Android P Beta program will be treated with Android 9 Pie by the end of the fall.

All the Nokia Android One phones that are slated to receive the Android 9 Pie update Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 6 (2018), Nokia 6.1 Plus (Nokia X6), Nokia 5.1 Plus (Nokia X5), Nokia 5.1, Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 2.1. Among these, the Nokia 7 Plus is expected to get the final Android P update by the end of this month since it is one of the smartphones that have been enrolled in the Android P beta program.

Apart from Android One phones by HMD Global, other Nokia phones are also confirmed to receive Android P update. Around two months ago, Neil Broadley who is the global market manager of HMD Global had said that the Android P will be made available to entire Nokia portfolio. These means that other older Nokia phone such as Nokia 8, Nokia 7, Nokia 6, Nokia 5, Nokia 3, Nokia 2 and Nokia 1 will be also treated with Android 9 Pie. However, as mentioned above, Nokia Android One phones will be the first ones to be blessed with Android Pie.

On May 29 the three devices were unveiled, but since that day we are waiting for them to hit the shelves. Now, the first info about their launch has started to surface. Nokia 3.1 has been spotted on listings of Amazon USA, but it is currently out of stock and listed as coming soon. This means that the company is probably getting ready to launch its new low-end device in the United States.

Amazon U.S. lists the Nokia 3.1 with a price tag of $159, that is exactly the same announced by HMD Global on May 29. In the meantime, Nokia 5.1 has been certified by FCC in four variants. The versions are identified by the codenames TA-1088, TA-1081, TA-1075 and TA-1061. The first and the second variant are the ones with dual SIM slot, while the other twos are the single SIM variants with the support to NFC. According to HMD Global, Nokia 5.1 will be launched with a listing price of $219 which roughly translates into €189. The handset should be made available starting from July.

In case you do not remember, Nokia 3.1 and 5.1 are affordable device powered by 18:9 displays (5.2 and 5.5 inches respectively). The first has a low-end MediaTek MT6750, that is an octa-core SoC running at a max frequency of 1.5 GHz. The chipset is paired with 2 or 3 GB of RAM and 16 or 32 GB of internal storage depending on the chosen configuration. The device sports a 13 MP main camera and an 8 MP front snapper, while the battery has a capacity of 2990 mAh. Nokia 5.1 has a midrange MediaTek Helio P18 chipset, and the same memory configurations. Its main camera has a 16 MP resolution, while the secondary one is 8 MP. The battery has a 2970 mAh capacity.

Both phones which will go buy the Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 5.1 monikers come with 18:9 displays.

Nokia 3.1

The Nokia 3.1 comes with a bigger 5.2-inch screen but is just a tad taller than its predecessor thanks to its reduced bezel and 18:9 display screen ratio. The device should be smaller but the lower bezel doesn’t seem to have been cut at all.

The 5.2-inch screen has a 1440 x 720 resolution and is covered with Gorilla Glass. There is a MediaTek MT6750N processor clocked at 1.5GHz under the hood. It is paired with 2GB/3GB of RAM and 16GB/32GB of expandable storage.

The Nokia 3.1 has a 13MP f/2.0 rear camera and an 8MP f/2.0 front-facing camera with an 84.6° field of view. For connectivity, there is Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band Wi-Fi, GPS, a USB-C port, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The phone also comes with a 2990mAh battery.

Unlike the first-gen Nokia 3, the Nokia 3.1 launches under the Android One program. This shouldn’t be surprising as HMD Global already announced following the launch of the Nokia 8 Sirocco that future Nokia phones will be Android One phones.

The Nokia 3.1 will come in Blue Copper, Black Chrome, and White Iron. It will sell for €139 and €169 for the 2GB and 3GB variants respectively and goes on sale this month.

Nokia 5.1

The Nokia 5.1 comes with a 5.5-inch screen with a Full HD+ resolution. It measures 151.1 x 70.73 x 8.27 mm making it just a tiny bit taller than the first-gen model.

Powering the Nokia 5.1 is a MediaTek MT6755S octa-core processor clocked at 2.0GHz. Depending on the model, you either get 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage or 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. There is storage expansion available.

A 16MP sensor with PDAF sits at the back of the device and an 8MP camera is positioned above the display. The new aspect ratio has resulted in Nokia moving the fingerprint scanner to the back of the device. It now sits below the camera setup.

The Nokia 5.1 has a 3000mAh battery, a USB-C port, and a single speaker. It also runs the latest version of Android Oreo out of the box. Just like the Nokia 2.1 and Nokia 3.1, the Nokia 5.1 is also an Android One phone.

It will be available in Copper, Tempered Blue, and Black. It will go on sale in July for €189 and €219 for the 2GB RAM and 3GB RAM versions respectively.

Back in February during MWC, the CMO of HMD Global Pekka Rantala disclosed in an interview that there will be new Nokia 2, Nokia 3, and Nokia 5 models. A user agent profile has confirmed the existence of the Nokia 3 (2018) or Nokia 3.1.

The Nokia 3.1 is running Android 8.0 Oreo and that is the only information revealed by the user agent profile. The rest of the specs may leak later before the launch.

The first-gen Nokia 3 has a 5.0-inch HD display, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, and a MediaTek MT6737 processor. It also has a single 8MP rear camera and another 8MP front-facing camera along with a 2630mAh battery.

Judging by the Nokia 6.1/Nokia 6 (2018) we presume the Nokia 3.1 will retain its display size but get a more powerful processor, an upgraded camera, and maybe even a fingerprint scanner.
