However, the company had not revealed which processor powers the device.

Now, Spreadtrum Communications — a China-based semiconductor company has revealed that the Nokia 3310 4G is powered by Spreadtrum SC9820 chipset. This is the same chipset that powers the Lava Connect M1 4G feature phone that was launched in India last year.

The chipset is claimed to be the world’s first 4G feature phone chipset. Along with 4G VoLTE HD voice and video calling, the chipset supports the display having FWVGA screen resolution, 5-megapixel camera, and 720p HD video playback.

Relaunching the popular Nokia 3310 was a smart move by HMD Global. The launch of the redesigned classic took the spotlight away from its Android-powered siblings the Nokia 3 and Nokia 5 at MWC 2017.

Towards the end of the year, Nokia launched a new variant of the phone again, this time adding 3G network support. It will also be launching another variant this year that will have support for 4G networks.

The Nokia 3310 4G was seen on TENAA last week but only images and a few specs were available. The complete specification details have now been listed on the TENAA database.

The 4G variant of the redesigned classic has model number TA-1077. It keeps most of the specs of the 3G model such as the screen which is still a 2.4” 240 x 320 display, the 2MP rear camera, and 1200mAh battery capacity. Dimensions are nearly identical at 117 x 52.4 x 13.35 mm but the phone is lighter at 73.5g.

The Nokia 3310 4G is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor paired with 256MB of RAM. There is 512MB of storage that can be expanded via a microSD card slot (128GB max).

The phone runs YunOS 5.2.0, supports LTE bands 38, 39, 40, 41 and also supports VoLTE. TENAA says it will be available in Fresh Blue and Dark Black.

There is no news of when HMD Global plans to launch the phone. It may decide to wait until MWC or announce it before then. Nevertheless, it may still take a while before it becomes available globally.

A new Nokia model, likely the Nokia 6 2018 version already passed through the Chinese certification website TENAA a few weeks back and now, the rumored Nokia 3310 4G variant has also been through the certification website. It’s worth noting that a Nokia 4G phone had passed through Bluetooth SIG website last week and it could have been this model.

TENAA revealed only the pictures of the new model and it’s identical to the Nokia 3310 3G version that was announced back in September. If you remember, the 3G version was around 13% larger than the 2G model, featuring better spacing between buttons for an improved typing experience. So it remains to be seen whether the 4G version gets another increase in size. TENAA confirms 4G LTE network support and also reveals that the phone will be powered by Alibaba’s YunOS platform.

With carriers decommissioning 2G networks, the Nokia 3310 3G version made sense. The phone came with a slightly different Series 30+ Feature OS, supporting apps like Facebook, Skype, and Twitter. However, the upgrade in the cellular radio department did cost the battery life of the device. The Nokia 3310 3G version gave only around 6.5 hours of talktime instead of the monstrous 22.1 hours on the 2G version. With an upgrade to 4G, the battery life could further go down.

Also, if the Nokia 3310 4G version does make it to the market, it’s likely to be sold at a higher price. The 3G variant costs €69 vs €49 for the 2G variant.

Instead, the Finnish firm may debut a new 4G feature phone for Indian markets. Hence, the rumor mill is speculating that the 4G edition of Nokia 3310 will arrive to rival with JioPhone feature phone in India.

In a recent interview, Ajey Mehta, the Vice President of HMD Global has strongly suggested that the company is considering launching a 4G feature phone in India. However, he has not confirmed whether the 4G feature phone would be another variant of Nokia 3310 (2017).

Reliance Jio has recently launched JioPhone 4G feature phone with a pricing of Rs. 1,500 (~$23) in India. Since the JioPhone is expected to impact the market for feature phones, HMD Global is monitoring is its market response. If it is received well, it will also consider releasing a feature phone with 4G connectivity. Initial reports have revealed that the Reliance Jio will be shipping 6 million JioPhone units by December 2017.

Micromax is already working on a competitor phone for JioPhone. Micromax will be teaming up with BSNL service provider to launch a handset called Bharat One that will carry support for 4G VoLTE. Another Indian carrier Airtel, is also getting ready to debut a 4G smartphone with a price tag of Rs. 2,000 (~$30). This shows that competitor phones for JioPhone will be also available in the market soon. As far as HMD Global is concerned, it also seems to be very keen on taking on the JioPhone with its own 4G phone.
