Nokia has announced that it has won a multi-year deal with Reliance Jio for the deployment of 5G equipment in India. The deal will see Nokia supplying 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) equipment from its AirScale portfolio including base stations, MIMO antennas, and Remote Radio Heads.

The comprehensive supply deal is the second nicked by the company in India after Airtel. The announcement of 5G in India earlier this month has seen a raft of activities as cellular network providers seek to meet the high expectation of the market and deliver quality service. Reliance Jio began its 5G beta trials in four Indian cities earlier this month. The services were based on the standalone architecture started in Mumbai, Kolkatta, Delhi, and Varanasi.

Reliance Jio had stated back in August during its AGM that it has well-established relationships with leading network equipment providers. The company plans to fully cover India with its 5G network by December 2023. Reliance Jio hopes to deploy a 5G standalone network that will deliver advanced 5G services including network slicing and machine-to-machine communications. Reliance Jio says it is pleased to be working with Nokia and it will continue to invest in the latest network technologies. It says it was confident that the Nokia partnership will deliver one of the most enhanced 5G networks in the world.

Nokia also asserts that the deal is a significant win for the brand in the very important Indian market. The move will introduce millions to premium 5G services, enabled by the AirScale portfolio. Nokia says it expects a long and rewarding relationship with Jio.

We had previously also spotted the G21 on a Russian retail website, which revealed its key specifications. The Nokia G21 will sport a triple camera setup on the rear, with the primary shooter being a 50 megapixel camera paired with a 2 megapixel secondary and another 2 megapixel tertiary lens. On the front, it is expected to feature an 8 megapixel sensor for selfies. The smartphone will also launch in two storage configurations, including a 3GB and 4GB RAM variants.

What is new is that the company has started exporting phones manufactured in its Indian factory overseas.

This bit was revealed by the company last week. HMD Global Vice President (India and MENA) Sanmeet Singh Kochhar while speaking to the Press Trust of India (PTI) on Thursday disclosed that the company was already exporting the Nokia 105 feature phone to the UAE market.

For perspective, let’s give a brief background of the Nokia 105. The feature phon was first launched in 2019 and has since gone on to become the number one selling feature phone in India and globally.

“We have started exports from India. Till now, all of our phones sold in India are made in India. Not only are they made in India, but we are also focussing on making them with Indian manufacturing partners and we are now kick-starting exports from India,” the VP added.

The HMD Global VP reiterated the immense relevance for feature phones at this present time when smartphones are growing more popular, citing their versatile use cases, long lasting battery, easy repairs and low pricing. He noted that despite the gradual decline of the global feature phone market due to a rise in more affordable entry-level smartphones, the India feature phone market has remained strong.

With the hearables category booming, especially in regards to the truly wireless earbuds segment, it arrives as no surprise that the Finnish brand is also seeking to compete in the market. However, the brand will have its work cut out for it since the audio accessory category has highly competitive Chinese smartphone makers as well. This includes brands like, Xiaomi, Oppo, OnePlus, Realme, and even POCO is set to join in as well.

In an interview with India Today, Sanmeet Singh Kochhar, Vice President for HMD Global stated that the company plans of bringing more audio based products to India next year. This would include the likes of TWS earbuds, wired headphones, and more. The official added that “TWS earbuds and wired headphones are big markets right now and we are focused on these. Depending on the price band, we will have our audio offerings on both online and offline platforms. It will likely be a 40 to 50 per cent online presence and the rest in the offline market.”

True Wireless Earbuds

Kochhar believes that these new audio accessories will pair well with Nokia smartphones. As of right now, the brand only has a limited offering of products in the hearables category, with one being the Power Earbuds Lite, and the other being the Nokia True Wireless Earbuds. Both of these are Bluetooth powered earphones. Apart from audio products, the company is even seeking to bring new tablets into the region as well. Earlier, it had launched its first ever T20 tablet, which the official said performed well. So, the company is also seeking to expand on its large screen device offering.

In an interview with the Financial Express, HMD Global vice president Sanmeet Kochhar says, India is an important market for Sourcing and Sales. The company is thus looking to launch affordable 5G devices in the country. To promote local manufacturing, Indian Govt has announced up to 2.5% custom duty on some parts of mobiles on its Union Budget 2021.

Additionally, the custom duty on PCB for chargers and other parts gets 15% and 2.5% duty respectively. While this happened today(Feb. 1), Sanmeet said that the company was seeking more clarification regarding the custom duties for components. Either way, HMD Global, although studying options to see India as an Export Hub, is in no plans to set up a factory on its own. Recently, Lava started making phones for the company.

And as Sanmeet says, 100% of Nokia devices selling in the country are made in India. And after getting about $230 million from partners like Google, Qualcomm, Nokia Technologies, this is only going to get better. Apart from this, Dixon Technologies, a large Consumer Electronics company also announced a tie-up with HMD Global. And for offline, Nokia seems to have 700+ distribution channel partners.

Sanmeet also iterates that Nokia devices are unique from other brands in terms of software. And it is no mood to change that. He adds that the company is looking to launch customized products for India but will continue to have the better and future-proof software.

Back when the COVID-19 cases had initially started breaking out in India, the government had imposed a nation wide lockdown. This caused many OEMs that had their manufacturing plants set up in the region to also suspend operations. Since then, these lockdowns have seen a relaxation in various regards, but many feared that this would lead to infection cases rising again. So the news regarding Nokia’s plant shutdown arriving immediately after these relaxations might be behind why the company chose not to give out the official numbers.

According to a spokesperson, “We hope to resume operations soon at a restricted level with skeletal staff strength.” In other words, the scale of operations is going to see a drastic reduction. Notably, the Chinese smartphone maker, Oppo, recently reopened its plant in India after 9 of its employees tested positive for Coronavirus as well. So, while the government is trying to kickstart the economy again, the number of infections is expected to boom in the coming month.

New info reveals the phone will now be making its way to India.

Indian retailer, Sangeetha Mobiles, has revealed the Nokia 800 Tough is coming soon which means you will be able to purchase the rugged phone on their online store very soon.

There is no specific date yet but it most likely will be not too far off. When its European price is converted to INR, it gives you about INR 9390, which is pretty expensive for a feature phone. However, you will be hard-pressed to find a smartphone at that price range with some of the features of the KaiOS-powered Nokia 800 Tough.

The device has MIL-STD-810G compliance and will survive drops from a height up to 1.8 meters tall. It will even survive a fall on concrete. The Nokia 800 Tough also has an IP68 waterproof and dustproof rating and will work under extreme temperatures. It also has a 198 lumens flashlight at the top.

The Nokia 800 Tough packs a 2.4-inch QVGA screen, is powered by a Snapdragon 205 processor and has 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. There is a 2MP camera with flash on the rear and you get a hybrid dual SIM tray. Its 2100mAh battery will last more than 40 days on standby and more than 9 hours of talk time on 4G. There is also GPS, Bluetooth 4.1, and WiFi.

During the Fan Festival, the 4GB RAM version was priced at INR 20,999 (~$300) but you can get it for INR 19,999 (~$287) now. However, that isn’t a significant cut compared to the 6GB RAM version.

The Nokia 8.1 with 6GB of RAM is now priced at INR 22,999 (~$330), INR 3,000 (~$43) less than it was last month during the Fan Festival.

You can buy the phone at the new prices on the official online store or on Amazon (even slightly cheaper). It is also said to be available at the new prices in brick and mortar stores.

The Nokia 8.1 is powered by the Snapdragon 710 processor. It also has a 6.18-inch notched display with an FHD+ resolution. There is a 12MP + 13MP dual camera setup on the back along with a fingerprint scanner. It also has a 20MP selfie camera, a 3500mAh battery with 18W fast charging, a 3.5mm audio jack, and support for storage expansion.

It runs Android Pie out of the box and will get 2 years of OS updates, so it should get Android Q and Android R. This is the edge it has over most of its competitors which have similar specs but a lower price tag.

The Nokia 8.1 is the device that has received the biggest discount of all. If you are purchasing the 4GB RAM version, you get INR 6,000 off if you use the promo code “FAN6000” at checkout. That brings the price from INR 26,999 (~$386) to INR 20,999 (~$300). If you decide to purchase the 6GB RAM version which is originally priced at INR 29,999 (~$429), the promo code “FAN4000” will bring the price down to INR 25,999 (~$371).

Even though it is for a limited period, we are not surprised at the massive price cut. With phones like the Realme 3 Pro which is powered by the same Snapdragon 710 SoC as the Nokia 8.1, has a bigger battery, and starts at INR 13,999 (~$200) for the 4GB RAM version; HMD Global has no choice but to announce a price cut.

The company has now listed the two models on its official India website. The listing did not reveal the price nor the launch date of the models but they act as clues that the duo would soon hit India. The Nokia 3.2 16 GB and 32 GB editions are respectively priced at $139 and $169 in Europe while the 4.2 starts at $169. We don’t expect the prices in India to be too different.

The Nokia 3.2 and 4.2 were both launched at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February this year. The phones were dropped alongside the penta-lens enabled Nokia 9 PureView as well as the budget-friendly Nokia 1 Plus and Nokia 210 feature phone.

The two models are the first Nokia phones to feature the Water drop notch design. As a reminder, the Nokia 3.2 sports a 6.26-inch a-Si TFT LCD display with a waterdrop notch that delivers 720 x 1520 pixels and 19:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by a Snapdragon 429 processor paired with 2GB or 3GB of RAM while there is the 16GB and 32GB storage onboard respectively. Interestingly, there is a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor on only the 32GB variant. The handset is fueled by a 4,000mAh battery. There is equally a dedicated button for Google Assitant and Nokia included the now patented LED notification light on the power button.

On the other hand, the Nokia 4.2 packs a slightly smaller 5.71-inch IPS LCD display with a water drop notch and HD+ resolution. The display also appears in the 19:9 aspect ratio. The Nokia 4.2 is powered by a Snapdragon 439 chipset and it is available in 2GB+16GB and 3GB+32GB memory variants. The phone is fuelled by a 3,000mAh battery while there is equally a dedicated Google Assistant button. The budget model comes with top features such as NFC with Google pay support and Bluetooth 4.2. While there is no difference between this and the version released in London, India will get it for a lesser price.

The Nokia 8 is a flagship in all areas. It has a 5.3-inch display with a 2K resolution and is powered by the Snapdragon 835. There is 4GB of RAM on board and 64GB of expandable storage.

Just like most flagships released this year, the Nokia 8 has dual rear cameras with a few software tricks of its own. The dual 13MP cameras have Carl Zeiss lens just like the Nokia high-end phones of old. There is OIS, laser and phase detection autofocus and a dual LED flash. Although the sensors are in the RGB + Monochrome configuration, there is a live bokeh mode that allows you to adjust the bokeh strength for portrait mode images.

The selfie camera is also the same 13MP f/2.0 Carl Zeiss lens as the color sensor on the back. One software trick HMD has added to the Nokia 8 is something called Dual-Sight mode. It allows you to take pictures and record video simultaneously with both the rear and front facing cameras in a split-screen fashion. This is especially good for those who are at outdoor events like a parade, a concert or a sports game.
