The global shipments of Chromebooks remained strong, with shipments still over 10 million units in the first quarter of this year. This arrives a 9 percent decrease sequentially but marking a whopping 280 percent year on year growth in terms of volume.

According to a DigiTimes report, notebook shipments were driven by the education sector back in 2020, with a significant rise due to the need for online education and work from home. In the total shipments of notebooks, Chromebooks accounted for over 60 percent of the volumes. Shipments of this category crossed over 30 million units in the year. Out of the various brands that sold these types of notebooks, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Samsung Electronics and Asustek Computer marked new quarterly shipments records in Q1 2021.

Furthermore, shipments of models powered by MediaTek‘s ARM based solutions also surpassed the 1.5 million units mark in the same quarter. The report also adds that the shipments of notebook arrived at the 57.51 million units in the first quarter of this year, which is a fall of 8.7 percent sequentially. Although, this is much better than the average sequential decline of 15 percent experienced in the recent years.

Interestingly, the robust performance in the first quarter of 2021 was primary driven by gaming and education notebooks as well as Apple’s MacBooks. Notably, Asustek and Micro Star International (MSI) saw an increased gaming notebook shipments in the first quarter while GPUs and high end mobile CPUs used in high end notebooks were facing severe shortages and a high high in pricing as well.

The global shipments of laptop notebooks, excluding the detachable models, have risen over 10 percent sequentially for the fourth quarter of last year. This marked shipments reaching a record high of 60 million units.

According to a DigiTimes report, the primary reason that drove the rise in notebook shipments was thanks to the growing demand for laptops for remote working and online education becoming more common due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Furthermore, the year end holiday season backed by promotional campaigns and government subsidies further helped in growing the shipment numbers during the final quarter of 2020.

Notably, laptop shipments for the entire year also crossed over 25 percent year on year, which marked a 9 year high of 201 units as per the report. At the moment, laptop makers are trying to raise their inventories from ODMs to support the growing stay at home economy for the coming months. Additionally, the global laptop shipments are also expected to fall by less than 10 percent in the first quarter of this year, which is still an improvement of 15 to 25 percent for the same quarter sequentially.

Currently, major brands in the market are only expected to see a slight decline during this quarter, which is also due to shortages in components. Although, OEMs would still work on raising their shipments of notebooks during this time, like HP, which is expected to raise shipments for its Chromebooks. However, this might not be universal for all notebook makers as Lenovo may not see a similar shipment momentum during the first quarter of 2021. This is unlike a few other companies that are looking forward to a rise in shipments to enterprise clits and for improved Chromebook performance in the market due to the resurgence of the pandemic in certain regions.

As COVID-19 broke out globally, Desktop and Notebook PC shipments rose this year due to quarantine, online education, entertainment etc. With the pandemic still easing out slowly, the Global Notebook shipments are reportedly strong in November according to Digitimes research. Precisely, the report says the shipments of Top-5 brands combined rose to second-highest monthly level.

According to the report, the Top-5 brands’ combined Notebook shipments are reportedly possible due to good sales in North America and Europe regions. So far, the shipments of Top-5 brands combined have reached the highest ever in October 2020. The list of brands included biggies like HP, Lenovo, Dell as well.

Last month, HP beat Lenovo to become the world’s largest notebook PC brand in Q3 2020. However, the latest report says HP’s enterprise and consumer notebook shipments dipped in November. That said, Lenovo reportedly crawled back with Chromebook shipments. If we recall, Chromebooks’ shipments grew 122% YoY in Q3 as per a recent report.

Coming back, the shipment contribution of Lenovo is both from its Japanese sub-brands and own brand supplied by Chinese and Taiwanese ODMs. Previously, it almost managed to capture 50% of the entire market along with HP two quarters back when pandemic was at its peak. Besides, shipments of DELL, which occupied third-place in Q3 with 13.7% market share, reportedly fell sharply in November.

The report also says that the ripple effect on shipments affected ODMs as well. Accordingly, the Top-3 ODMs'(Original Design Manufacturer) shipments dipped about 4% in November 2020. Some of the ODMs mentioned in the report are Compal Electronics, Quanta Computers.

In this, Compal Electronics, which is a Taiwanese ODM for top brands was affected the most with lackluster orders from Dell. However, Quanta Computers’ shipments have reportedly reached a new level due to the increase in orders. Overall, the year 2020 has been a rollercoaster for the desktop and Notebook PC market both in terms of inventories and sales figures.
