In a world saturated with heavily customized Android skins, Nothing OS stands out for its minimalist approach and focus on a clean, user-friendly experience. Developed by Nothing, the tech company founded by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, Nothing OS aims to deliver a near-stock Android experience with subtle tweaks and unique features that enhance the overall user journey.

Here’s a deeper dive into what makes Nothing OS special:

Minimalist Design Philosophy

Nothing OS embraces a starkly minimalist aesthetic. The interface is free from unnecessary bloatware, icons are simple and uncluttered, and animations are subtle and fluid. This design philosophy prioritizes clarity and ease of use, resulting in a visually calming and unburdened experience.

Stock Android at its Core

Nothing OS stays true to the core Android experience. It avoids heavily customizing the UI, instead offering a near-stock Android feel with subtle tweaks and enhancements. This approach allows users familiar with Android to seamlessly transition without a steep learning curve. However, Nothing OS doesn’t shy away from offering subtle customizations. Users can personalize their experience through unique wallpapers, glyph icons, and accent colors, striking a balance between stock Android’s familiarity and a touch of personal flair.

Numerous Customization Options

Material You Integration: Nothing OS seamlessly integrates with Material You, Google’s dynamic theming system. This allows users to personalize their color palettes across the entire system, creating a cohesive and visually appealing experience.

Folder Cover Feature: Folders can be assigned unique cover images or emojis, transforming them into discreet icons that blend seamlessly into the home screen.

Oversized Icons: Specific app icons and folders can be enlarged for easier access and visual prominence.

Unique Wallpapers: NothingOS offers exclusive “Glass” wallpapers with a subtle depth effect, adding a touch of elegance to the interface.

Glyph Interface Integration

Glyph Notification Light: The signature feature of Nothing phones is the Glyph interface, a set of LED lights on the back panel that illuminate in various patterns to notify users of calls, messages, and app alerts. This visual notification system adds a touch of personality and functionality, especially when the phone is placed face-down.

Glyph Customization: Users can customize the Glyph patterns for different contacts and notifications, creating a unique visual language for their phone. This level of personalization adds a fun and interactive element to the notification experience.

Glyph Integration with Apps: NothingOS allows for some third-party app integration with the Glyph interface. Additionally, the interface includes features like Google Assistant activation indication, charging level indication through wiggling, countdown timers, and progress indicators for calendar events and food orders.

Enhanced Usability and Gestures

Double-tap Power Button Gesture: NothingOS introduces a double-tap power button gesture that can be programmed to launch specific actions, such as opening the camera app or activating Google Assistant. This adds a convenient shortcut for frequently used functions.

Three-finger Screenshot Gesture: Capturing screenshots is made effortless with a simple three-finger swipe-down gesture. This intuitive action streamlines the process compared to traditional button combinations.

Additional Unique Features

Ringtones Composer: NothingOS offers a built-in ringtones composer, allowing users to create their own personalized notification sounds. This adds a touch of individuality and breaks the monotony of generic ringtones.

Lightweight Apps: The pre-installed apps on Nothing phones are carefully chosen, focusing on essential functionality and avoiding unnecessary bloatware. This helps maintain a clean system and contributes to overall performance.

Regular Updates

Nothing is committed to providing regular software updates and long-term support for its devices. This ensures users receive the latest security patches, bug fixes, and new features, keeping their devices secure and up-to-date for an extended period.

Openness and Community Engagement

Nothing is known for its transparent and community-driven approach. The company actively engages with users, gathers feedback, and incorporates suggestions into future updates. This open dialogue fosters a sense of ownership and involvement among users, further solidifying the brand’s identity.

Is Nothing OS for Everyone?

Nothing OS caters to a specific user segment. If you value a clean, uncluttered interface, prioritize stock Android’s familiarity, and appreciate subtle yet meaningful enhancements, Nothing OS offers a refreshing alternative. However, if you crave extensive customization options and feature-heavy interfaces, Nothing OS might not be the most suitable choice.

The brand started rolling out the Nothing OS 2.5.3 update for the device which comes with the latest Android security patch, some performance changes, and a new icon pack setting.

Nothing OS 2.5.3 Changelog:

What’s new

Added an option for the Nothing Icon Pack to be applied only to the Home Screen to improve accessibility in the App Drawer.

You can now scroll through pages on the Home Screen while holding app icons for a more intuitive experience while organizing icons.

Improvements

Fixed an issue with car Bluetooth media players.

Optimized animations in certain scenarios for smoother transitions.

Updated Android Security patch version to April 2024.

Resolved system stability issues to enhance overall performance.

The update, coming in at 64.58 MB, is set for a global rollout soon. However, it seems the community isn’t too thrilled about it. While the previous update in late January fixed some issues, it left users wanting more, especially in terms of camera quality and overall polish. Unfortunately, despite the anticipation, this new update doesn’t seem to address the camera quality and HDR control issues. Among the top requests in the comments were features like a ring mode tile and a recorder widget, both of which have already been added to the Nothing Phone (2a). For now, users can only hope for another update that addresses these concerns.

Nothing Phone (1), the first smartphone from the Nothing brand founded by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, released the first Open Beta build of Nothing OS 1.5 back in December.

After a brief period of testing, the company has now officially started rolling out the first stable build of the Nothing OS 1.5 based on the Android 13 operating system to the users of Nothing Phone (1).

Nothing Phone (1)

According to reports from a number of users, the stable Android 13 update for the smartphone is available in the form of Nothing OS 1.5.2. It is around 157MB in size if the user is upgrading from the last public beta version, which is a very small size in comparison to the update from other brands.

The newer version of the software comes with the January 2023 Android security patch. This mark the first stable build of the Nothing OS 1.5 but the rollout may be limited to users who are Open Beta participants and the rollout for all the users should take place in the coming weeks unless it faces any issues and the company needs time to fix them.

Here’s the changelog for the new Nothing OS 1.5.2 based on the Android 13 operating system for the Nothing Phone (1):

Nothing launched the NothingOS 1.5 Closed Beta a few weeks back. It finally brought Android 13 to the Nothing Phone (1), although in an early access state. Now, the operating system has moved into the Open Beta phase, meaning more users will be able to access this version and get to try the new features coming with Android 13 before the company releases the stable update for all devices.

The Beta version comes with a revised changelog and brings new features like a new network and Bluetooth device pop-ups. It also offers deeper Material You integration and other UI enhancements. You can check out the entire changelog below.

NothingOS 1.5 Open Beta changelog

It is worth noting that this open beta program is not like a traditional open beta program and is quite restrictive. Users interested to join have to give consent via email confirmation and have to get their device IMEI number enrolled in the company’s database. Additionally, the brand also does not officially provide a method to sideload the update.

On the other hand, if you are already enrolled in the company’s testing program, the update will be rolling out in the next few days to your device. You can also head to Settings > System > System update to manually check for the update.

The Nothing Phone (1) is set to start receiving the Android 13 OS closed beta soon. The company’s CEO and Founder Carl Pei has been teasing the NothingOS 1.5 update for sometime now, and it appears that the beta program is live.

As of right now, the company has began rolling out the NothingOS 1.5 Closed Beta starting today (30th November 2022). The senior official took to Twitter to announced Android 13 based NothingOS update timeline for its smartphone. So while the closed beta is currently live, the open beta will only begin two weeks later. The company had previously announced that the Android 13 stable update for the Phone (1) model will be released sometime in early 2023, so this timeline is in line with this information.

The brand has been offering various firmware updates since the Phone (1) was launched, but it had seemed liked the Android 13 update would take a while. So this is great news for owners of the company’s only smartphone mode. Its unknown how to register for the Android 13 closed beta update at the moment and it is also unclear which region will be receiving this update. However, we can expect more information to be divulged with the official launch of the NothingOS 1.5 open beta. So stick around for more updates regarding this matter.

It was also revealed that the phone would be running the company’s own Nothing OS.

Nothing also decided to give users of select smartphones a glimpse of the upcoming Nothing OS through a custom launcher for Android phones, named Nothing Launcher, which is available for some smartphones in the Beta phase.

Now, the availability of Nothing Launcher is being expanded, and the application is now supporting all smartphones running the Android 11 or above version of the operating system. This is a wide range of supported apps compared to its previous support for only Pixel devices, OnePlus devices, and the Samsung Galaxy S21 lineup.

The updated version of the launcher comes with several minor tweaks, including the ability to quickly change the wallpaper with an on-screen pop-up, with a direct link to Nothing’s wallpapers and ringtones. There’s also a dedicated Nothing Launcher icon on the home screen with this update and a new set-up page upon the first launch.

Nothing Launcher includes several tweaks and tuning, including what the company refers to as “Max Icons” and “Max Folders,” allowing users to press and hold app icons or folders and increase the space taken on the home screen.

It also offers a series of unique wallpapers, weather, clock widgets, and ringtones but it lacks some of the features, like support for the Google Discover feed which is now becoming more commonplace on various OEM skins of Android.

Nothing Phone (1), Nothing OS
