Nothing has released a new beta update for the Nothing Phone (2) with Nothing OS build B4.0-251226-1110. This update does not add major new features, but it focuses on visual tweaks, better stability, and fixes that improve daily use across the system.

The most visible change is the updated battery percentage icon, which now shows the number inside the battery symbol. Extra dark mode has been optimised to work better across more apps and lighting conditions, making it more consistent. Volume adjustment using the hardware keys now feels smoother due to improved slider animations. The Recorder app also looks cleaner, with refined sound wave and wheel animations that move more smoothly during recording.

The update adds support for setting different ringtones for dual SIMs, which helps users quickly identify incoming calls. Pedometer widgets are now more stable, reducing errors and refresh issues. Camera performance has been improved overall, with better stability during use and more consistent colours when using camera presets. Pop-up view has been optimised to run more smoothly and behave more reliably during multitasking.

Vibration and haptic feedback have been tuned to feel more consistent across system actions. The Glyph Interface now responds more reliably to notifications and incoming calls in certain situations. Lock screen, always-on display, and unlocking behaviour have also been refined to make transitions feel smoother. Multi-user mode has been improved so changes made in the main user profile no longer affect other users on the device.

Several visual issues have been fixed in the status bar, Quick Settings panel, and notifications to improve overall consistency. The Battery widget now correctly shows the AirPods icon when AirPods support is enabled. Wi-Fi performance has also been improved, with faster automatic reconnection to saved networks.

The update includes the December 2025 Google Mobile Services update along with the December security patch.

Carl Pei, the co-founder of Nothing, confirmed that the Nothing Phone (3) will be a true flagship and use premium materials to enhance its design. It is unclear whether this refers to a titanium frame, but we can expect a durable glass back and a tough metallic frame on the sides. Using Titanium could make this model lighter and more durable than the Nothing Phone (2).

But a big change for the brand is moving away from its iconic Glyph LED interface. Gone is the iconic Glyph light bar; it’s replaced by a sleeker Glyph Matrix LED panel in the upper right corner on the back. So you’re getting a dynamic screen for notifications and other effects, instead of multiple strips of LED.

Nothing Phone (2) debuted with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 back in 2023, which was still a high end processor, but it was behind the current gen flagships that featured the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 at the time. With the Nothing Phone (3), the brand is bringing the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chipset, which might imply a similar treatment, but the chipset is still faster than the previous generation.

The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is also the latest announcement from Qualcomm, bringing better and longer support overall. Nothing promises its longest software support yet, with 5 years of major Android updates and 7 years of security patches.

Faster Charging and Bigger Battery

Battery capacity is seeing a slight upgrade from 4,700mAh on the Phone (2) to a larger 5,150mAh cell on the Phone (3). While this isn’t a massive upgrade, the larger battery paired with a more power efficient chipset will definitely offer a longer battery life. The fast charging is also getting an upgrade from 45W to possibly 65W or 100W wired fast charging. Wireless charging will likely make a return once again.

More Versatile Cameras

Even for its time, the Nothing Phone (2)’s camera system lacked versatility. The primary and ultra wide angle lens were decent, but the lack of a telephoto shooter hampered the photography experience for many. Nothing learned from this, and packed both the Nothing Phone (3a) and the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro with this sensor. Meanwhile, the upcoming flagship Phone (3) could be getting a similar upgrade as well. This could include a larger sensor for sharper images across the triple camera setup, which includes the new 3x periscopic telephoto shooter.

OnePlus Nord 4 is a solid mid-range phone featuring a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, a 50MP dual rear camera setup, and a massive 5,000mAh battery — the highest ever on a OnePlus phone — with 100W superfast charging.

The base variant of the OnePlus Nord 4 with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage smartphone currently sells for Rs. 29,999, while the 8GB + 256GB variant costs Rs. 32,999. The top-of-the-line 12GB + 256GB variant is priced at Rs. 35,999. While the OnePlus Nord offers solid value, there are alternatives in the same price range that provide even more features and better performance.

When it comes to cameras, the Xiaomi 14 Civi is miles ahead of the Nord 4. The circular camera module on the Xiaomi phone has three sensors — a 50MP primary camera with OIS, a 50MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom, and a 12MP ultrawide lens. Although both phones are capable of 4K recording, the output quality is a lot better on the Xiaomi 14 Civi.

The Xiaomi 14 Civi has dual selfie cameras — a 32MP primary sensor and a 32MP ultrawide sensor, while the Nord 4 has a single 16MP camera. You can record 4K selfie videos on the Xiaomi phone but not on the Nord 4.

The battery and charging specs are better on the OnePlus Nord 4, though. Another plus point for this phone is the software support. While Xiaomi promises 3 Android upgrades and 4 years of security updates, the OnePlus Nord 4 guarantees an additional Android upgrade and 2 extra years of security updates.

2. Vivo T3 Ultra

This Vivo phone has a slightly bigger screen, more resolutions, and a higher peak brightness than the OnePlus Nord 4. It also has Schott Xensation Alpha protection and a better IP rating, so you’ll have a good experience with the Vivo T3 Ultra’s display, even outdoors.

Although both smartphones run Android 14 out of the box, the Vivo phone has a disappointing update policy. The OnePlus Nord 4 will get four Android updates and six years of security updates, while the Vivo T3 Ultra only promises two Android upgrades and three years of security patches.

Thanks to the Dimensity 9200+ chip, the Vivo T3 Ultra offers better performance than the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3-powered Nord 4, and the 4023 sq. mm. VC cooling system keeps it cool during gaming.

Both smartphones feature a dual rear camera setup, which includes a 50MP primary sensor with OIS and an 8MP ultrawide sensor, though the Vivo phone has a larger field of view.

The selfie cameras have different resolutions, though. The Nord 4 features a 16MP sensor, while the T3 Ultra boasts a 50MP selfie camera. Additionally, the Vivo phone supports 4K video recording with its rear and front cameras, whereas the Nord 4’s selfie camera lacks this capability.

Both phones have a maximum battery capacity of 5,000mAh. However, the Nord 4 supports a faster charging of 100W (vs. 80W on the Vivo T3 Ultra).

3. Poco F6

The Poco F6 (review) might be an excellent buy if you prioritize performance over anything else. It has a screen size and resolution similar to the Nord 4 but a higher peak brightness. OnePlus Nord 4, however, has a better IP rating, but the Poco F6 gives you additional protection using Gorilla Glass Victus. Overall, both have excellent displays with minor differences.

You start noticing the difference when you perform tasks that require a lot of processing, such as gaming or video editing. The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 powering the OnePlus Nord 4 is a sound chip but can’t match the performance level of the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3.

Both smartphones come with Android 14 out of the box, but the OnePlus Nord 4 gets an extra Android OS upgrade. Both have a dual rear camera setup, which includes a 50MP primary camera and an 8MP ultrawide lens. On the front, you get a 20MP camera (vs. 16MP on the Nord 4).

4. Vivo V30 Pro

For those seeking good camera performance, the Vivo V30 Pro might be a good option. It has a powerful rear camera setup that includes three sensors: a 50MP primary sensor with OIS, a 50MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom, and a 50MP ultrawide lens with a 119-degree field of view.

The selfie camera on the V30 Pro also has 50MP resolution. The device can record up to 4K videos using the rear and selfie cameras. The camera performance is excellent that the Nord 4 can’t match.

Further, the Vivo phone features a Dimensity 8200 chip, which isn’t as good as the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3, but handles tasks pretty well. You can do casual gaming as well.

5. Realme GT 6

It’s a solid alternative to the OnePlus Nord 4, but you’ll have to loosen your pocket a little more. The Realme GT 6 has a bigger display with more pixels and significantly higher peak brightness. It also has Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection, which is lacking on the Nord 4.

The Realme device is powered by a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip, which is more powerful and efficient than the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 chip inside the OnePlus Nord.

Both devices ship with Android 14 out of the box, but the OnePlus phone will get an extra Android upgrade.

6. OnePlus 11

Rather than the Nord 4, you can grab the OnePlus 11 (review) for a better display, performance, and camera quality.

The OnePlus 11 has an LTPO3 AMOLED panel, which supports variable refresh rates. It has a higher resolution and features Gorilla Glass Victus protection, although the peak brightness is better on the Nord 4.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 fuels the OnePlus 11, which offers better performance and stability than the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3-powered Nord 4. So, you’ll have a better gaming experience on the OnePlus 11.

As for the software updates, both smartphones are promised four Android upgrades, though the OnePlus Nord 4 gets an additional year of security updates.

Nothing Phone 2 stands out from the crowd because of its design, mainly the Glyph UI. If you want to test out some innovation in an otherwise boring market, the Phone 2 could be a good option.

The smartphone uses an LTPO OLED panel but has a lower resolution and peak brightness than the OnePlus Nord 4. It’s protected using Gorilla Glass 5, which is lacking on the other phone.

The Nothing Phone (2) was launched back in July 2023 in India in two color options: Dark Grey and White. The white color option is exclusive to the 12GB + 256GB and 12GB + 512GB storage options, while the 8GB + 128GB config is only available in Dark Grey.

Now, Flipkart has teased that the White color option will soon be coming for the 8GB + 128GB model at the Big Billion Day sale. In addition to that, the model will be available for a discounted price during this time.

When an innovative product hits the market, everyone wants to copy it or at least take inspiration from it. Nothing’s smartphones, while not very different from other Android phones in terms of hardware, feature a unique transparent design clad with LED lights. So far, the London-based startup is the only one to release such phones, but it may soon have a competitor—or should we say, copycat? Infinix is reportedly working on a new smartphone that could look just like the recently released Phone (2).

The Phone could launch next month with GT series branding

Tipster Mukul Sharma tweeted that Infinix is preparing a new smartphone under a new GT-branded lineup. The phone is said to be inspired by the much-hyped Nothing Phone (2). Sharma also shared a render of the alleged handset, which shows markings that look similar to the Glyph Interface on Nothing phones.

The image does not make it clear whether the phone will have a transparent back like the Nothing Phone (1) and Phone (2). But the tipster says this Infinix smartphone will be launched in the gaming-oriented category and will be priced “much less” than the recently released Nothing phone.

While this is all interesting news, it seems that Infinix could get into legal trouble for copying the Phone (2). Carl Pei, the CEO of the London-based startup, replied to Sharma’s tweet and said he is readying up his lawyers. It is possible that Pei was joking, as he also added a laughing emoticon. However, it is certain that Nothing has patented the Glyph Interface on its phones, so if a company is copying it, they could easily be dragged into court.

Nothing Phone (2) gets a significant hardware boost as compared to the original model. Replacing the older Snapdragon 778G+, the company has packed the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC on the device. This 4nm processor offers solid performance and balanced thermals. The device gets LPDDR5 RAM and USF 3.1 storage.

The rear camera department now features a 50MP Sony IMX890 main camera sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS) and in-sensor zoom. This is the same primary sensor as the OnePlus 11. As per leaks and teasers, the successor of Nothing Phone 1 will sport a tweaked design with more LED lights for its updated Glyph interface on the back. Under the hood, it will house a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip.

Other expected features include a 6.72-inch FHD+ (2412 x 1080 pixels) 120Hz LTPO OLED display, a 50MP Sony IMX890 primary camera, an in-screen fingerprint sensor, Android 13, and a 4,700mAh battery.

Oppo Reno 10 Series

The Oppo Reno 10 series is scheduled to launch in India on July 10 (Monday). The global version of the lineup consists of three models, namely Reno 10, Reno 10 Pro, and Reno 10 Pro Plus. They just went official in Malaysia.

The Reno 10 Pro Plus for international markets is the same as the one sold in China. However, the vanilla and pro variants are different from the original Chinese models.

The global Reno 10  and the Reno 10 Pro feature less powerful Snapdragon 778G and Dimensity 7050 chipsets, respectively. They also support slower charging standards (80W and 67W).

Honor Magic V2

The Honor Magic V2 is set to go official in China on July 12 (Wednesday). It is the brand’s third foldable smartphone after Magic V and Magic Vs.

Not much is known about this device. But two variants are expected, one with a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC and the other with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip 2.

Infinix Hot 30 5G

The Infinix Hot 30 5G is planned to debut in India on July 14 (Friday).  Thanks to leaks and teasers, we know a few things about this handset.

The device will flaunt a centered punch-hole display with 580 nits peak brightness level. It will sport a 50MP rear camera and will be backed by a 6,000mAh battery.

Last but not least, it will be available in two colors in the country, such as Aurora Blue and Knight Black. It is not known if the Miami Orange option with a faux leather finish will release in the region.

On July 11th, Nothing will be launching the Nothing Phone (2) smartphone for the global market. The brand has already revealed what the device looks like, while MKBHD did a video about his limited hands-on experience with the smartphone. Now, tipster Kamila Wojciechowska has filled in the missing details of the Nothing Phone (2).

In a recent leak thread poster on Twitter, the leaker revealed screenshots of the Nothing OS 2.0, while also leaking some key specifications of the device. According to Kamila, the Nothing Phone (2) will feature an upgraded primary 50MP camera, featuring the Sony IMX890 sensor. The camera will use optical image stabilization and in-sensor zoom. It is worth noting that this is the same sensor used in the OnePlus 11, and a major upgrade over the IMX766 sensor in the Phone (1).

The ultra-wide sensor will be unchanged, meaning the same Samsung JN1 with EIS, and the front camera will have a 32MP Sony IMX615 sensor with EIS. Along with the upgraded sensor, image processing will also be new, so we can expect some improvements from these sensors.

According to the tipster, the upcoming Phone (2) is rumored to sport a 6.72-inch AMOLED display supplied by Visionox, with a resolution of 2412 x 1080 pixels. This display will impress with its 120Hz refresh rate, offering a smooth and responsive user experience. To optimize power consumption, the refresh rate will dynamically adjust to lower frequencies, such as 1Hz, 10Hz, 24Hz, or 30Hz when necessary. Additionally, the device is expected to retain an optical fingerprint sensor provided by Goodix, ensuring convenient and secure biometric authentication.

Last month saw the emergence of several CAD renders of the upcoming Nothing Phone (2). However, since the official design has not been disclosed by the company, it remains unclear whether these renders accurately represent the device’s design. A recently released teaser suggested that the device could be equipped with a dual-camera system like its predecessor. A leaked poster that has surfaced now online has revealed the rear camera design of the Phone (2) for the design.

Nothing Phone (2) features a dual-camera setup

The leaked image of the Nothing Phone (2) released by tipster Paras Guglani showcases a vertical dual camera setup similar to its predecessor. The design closely resembles the CAD renders by renowned tipster OnLeaks, which were previously published on SmartPrix. Unfortunately, there is no information available about the camera configurations of the Phone (2).

The image also reveals the Phone (2) has flat edges and a dual LED flash, in contrast to the single LED flash found on the Phone (1). Below is a cropped image from one of the CAD renders, demonstrating that the renders provided an almost accurate depiction of the rear camera setup and dual LED flash unit.

With around a week remaining for the Phone (2)’s launch, it appears that the company will soon roll out more teasers to reveal its design. One of the recent teasers revealed that the Nothing Phone (2) will come equipped with a display with a centred punch-hole, unlike the corner camera cutout, which was seen on the Phone (1). As far as specifications are concerned, the Phone (2) will feature a 6.7-inch AMOLED display that offers an FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate.

The device will pack a 4,700mAh battery with wireless charging. The back panel of the phone will have an improved version of the Glyph interface. It will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset and run on the Nothing OS 2.0-based Android 13. It will also feature an aluminium frame for enhanced durability and a premium feel.

More than 10 brands have confirmed to release new phones in the next couple of weeks alone. Most of these handsets fall under mid-range and affordable premium categories.

But we will also witness the launch of some foldables and premium phones. The majority of these products will be announced in China with some of them making their debut in multiple international markets.

So it’s not surprising that most of these brands are Chinese, such as iQOO, Red Magic, Honor, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Ralme, and Infinix. Anyways, we will also new devices from non-Chinese brands, like Samsung, Motorola, and Nothing.

Let’s check out all the handsets that are expected to release in the coming days.

Upcoming Smartphones in July 2023

Motorola Razr 40 Series

Motorola unveiled the Razr 40 series in early June. These clamshell foldables are on sale in multiple countries for quite a while. They will be debuting in India on July 3.

The lineup includes two products, namely Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra. The former is currently the most affordable foldable smartphone on the market. While the latter has the largest cover screen.

As per an accidental promo by Amazon, the Razr 40 Ultra could start at ₹59,999 in India. This price tag may be inclusive of offers.

iQOO Neo 7 Pro

The iQOO Neo 7 Pro is scheduled to launch in India on July 4. As the name suggests, it will be a better version of iQOO Neo 7 from earlier this year.

As per teasers and leaks, the device will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip, an OIS-assisted 50MP Samsung ISOCELL GN5 primary camera, a 5,000mAh battery, and 120W fast-wired charging support.

The handset is expected to arrive in 8GB + 128GB and 12GB + 256GB memory configurations. It may cost around ₹33,999 inclusive of offers.

iQOO 11S

The iQOO 11S will make its debut in China on July 4. It is a mid-year refresh for the iQOO 11 released earlier this year.

The handset will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip paired with LPDDR5x RAM and UFS 4.0 storage. It will be fitted with a 2K 144Hz Samsung E6 AMOLED display with up to 1800 nits of peak brightness level.

The device will feature an OIS-assisted 50MP Sony IMX866 main camera. Lastly, it will draw energy from a 4,700mAh battery and support 200W fast wired charging.

Red Magic 8S Pro

The Red Magic 8S Pro is set to launch in China on July 5. It will go official as the world’s first 24GB RAM smartphone.

The phone will be powered by an overclocked version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 2 chipset. It will be offered in regular and transparent back options, like its predecessors.

The device will come equipped with an obstruction-free display, courtesy of an under-display camera. Finally, it will be backed by a 6,000mAh battery with support for 165W fast wired charging support.

Honor X50

The Honor X50 will be launched in China on July 5. The handset will be almost similar to its predecessor Honor X40.

It is tipped to house a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 SoC inside. While the brand has officially confirmed that it will be backed by a 5,800mAh battery.

Other expected features include a 1.5K curved OLED display with high-frequency PWM dimming and a 100MP primary camera. Lastly, it is said to carry support for 35W fast wired charging.

OnePlus Nord 3 and Nord CE 3

The OnePlus Nord 3 and OnePlus Nord CE 3 are scheduled to go official in India and other global markets on July 5. The former is a rebranded OnePlus Ace 2V, while the latter is a new product.

The Nord CE 3 is expected to arrive with a 6.72-inch 120Hz FHD+ AMOLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 782G SoC, a 50MP main camera, a 16MP front-facing camera, a 5,000mAh battery, and 80W fast wired charging support.

As their names suggest, the Nord 3 and Nord CE 3 will succeed the Nord 2T and Nord CE 2. However, it’s not known whether their predecessors will be discontinued.

Oppo Reno 10 Series

The Oppo Reno 10 series is expected to release in multiple international markets in July. It will be first announced in Malaysia on July 6.

Just like in China, the global version of the lineup is expected to include three devices. However, the vanilla and pro models will be slightly different from the originals. But the Pro Plus is said to be the same.

All three phones will come with a zoom camera. The Pro Plus will even feature a periscope lens. Finally, they will sport the same design and a curved OLED display.

Realme Narzo 60 Series

The Realme Narzo 60 series is planned to launch in India on July 6. The lineup consists of two handsets, namely Realme Narzo 60 and Realme Narzo 60 Pro.

Both these products are rebranded versions of existing Realme number series smartphones. The vanilla model is a rebadged Realme 11, while the pro variant is a renamed Realme 11 Pro.

It is worth noting that the Realme 11 Pro is already available in India under its original name. However, the standard model is yet to debut in the region. The series is expected to start from ₹17,999 inclusive of offers.

Honor 90

The Honor 90 will be unveiled for global markets on July 6. The global variant of the device is the same as the original Chinese version.

It is tipped to cost £449.99 for the base 8GB + 256GB memory configuration. The product will be also offered in a higher 12GB + 512GB memory variant.

The phone arrives with a 6.7-inch 120Hz OLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset, a 200MP primary camera, a 5,000mAh battery, and 66W fast-wired charging support.

Samsung Galaxy M34

The Samsung Galaxy M34 will go official in India on July 7. It is expected to be a watered-down version of Galaxy A34.

Official teasers have revealed that the smartphone will come with a 6.5-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, an OIS-assisted 50MP rear camera, a 16MP selfie camera, and a 6,000mAh battery. It will have the new universal design adopted by Samsung for its handsets.

Last but not least, the device is expected to house an Exynos 1280 SoC underneath it.

Nothing Phone 2

The Nothing Phone 2 will be made official on July 11. It will be announced in India and Europe.

As per teasers, the smartphone may retain the design of its forerunner with some tweaks. However, it will be more powerful, thanks to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip under its hood.

Other expected specs of the product include a centered punch-hole OLED display, Glyph interface, LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, and a 4,700mAh battery.

Honor Magic V2

The Honor Magic V2 horizontal foldable smartphone is confirmed to go official on July 12. Interestingly, though we are only a few days away from the announcement, not much is known about this product.

Rumors suggest that there will be two variants featuring a custom 2K LTPO display. The regular model will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset, while the  Ultimate edition will house a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC.

Oppo A78 4G and Oppo K11

Oppo is expected to unveil Oppo A78 4G and Oppo K11 in the next few days. As per leaks, the former is a 4GB variant of Oppo A78 5G, while the latter is the Chinese version of the OnePlus Nord CE 3.

The Oppo A78 4G is tipped to arrive with a 6.43-inch 90Hz OLED display, dual stereo speakers, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chip, a 50MP rear camera, a 5,000mAh battery, and 67W fast wired charging support.

On the other hand, the Oppo K11 is expected to come with the same specs as Nord CE 3 discussed earlier.

Vivo V29 Series and Vivo Y27 5G

The Vivo V29 series and Vivo Y27 5G are anticipated to release in July. The former is a tweaked version of the Vivo S17 series for international markets, whereas the latter is a budget 5G smartphone.

The Vivo Y27 5G is expected to arrive with a 6.64-inch 90Hz FHD+ display (LCD), a 50MP main camera, a 16MP selfie camera, a 5,000mAh battery, and 44W fast-wired charging support. Essentially, it is said to be a rebranded Vivo Y36 5G.

Whereas, the Vivo V29 lineup will include Vivo V29 and Vivo V29 Pro. The vanilla model will likely be similar to the Vivo S17, while the pro model will differ from S17 Pro.

Infinix Zero 30 5G

The Infinix Zero 30 5G might be unveiled in July. As of now, not much is known about this phone.

It is expected to feature a MediaTek Dimensity 8020 chipset and Bluetooth 5.3. It will succeed Infinix Zero 20, which is a 4G-only smartphone.

Nothing Phone (2) is scheduled to launch in a few weeks and the company’s hype machine is on the roll. The brand has started to tease the device, revealing details in bits and pieces. Not much is changing in the design department, at least nothing significant. We know that the device will retain its transparent back, adorned with LED lights. However, a recent teaser has unveiled that while the front of the phone remains largely unchanged from Phone (1), the back will feature a curvier profile.

Nothing Phone (2) does not have flat sides

Nothing wanted to spark innovation again in the smartphone industry and it did manage to do something different with the Phone (1). Although some folks might argue that it’s an iPhone copy with LEDs on the back, many believe the handset follows an innovative approach. The Carl Pei-led startup wants to keep the spark alive with the Phone (2) but it seems there won’t be many changes in the design.

Teasers reveal that the front of the device remains business as usual, featuring a centered punch-hole cutout and relatively thin bezels on the top and sides of the display. The Nothing Phone (2) is expected to be equipped with a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen, boasting FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. However, it is the back of the phone where Nothing has implemented some changes. While the smartphone still retains its transparent back with the company’s signature Glyph Interface of LEDs for notifications, the sides now appear to be slightly curved instead of flat.

In 2020, Carl Pei left OnePlus to start a new company that tries to stick out from the crowd with its unique products and a rather interesting name—Nothing. The startup is very new with just one smartphone and a couple of TWS earphones in the market. Following the success of the Nothing Phone 1, the company is gearing up to launch its successor, called Phone 2. And to make sure the handset sticks the landing, Nothing has made some key hires from its CEO’s former employer OnePlus, says a report.

“Seventy percent of the software team at Nothing are from OnePlus”

Inverse reports that Nothing has been hunting talent from OnePlus. As per the outlet, the Carl Pei-led startup has hired several former high-level OnePlus members who played a key role in building the brand. This is apparently to make sure the upcoming Nothing Phone 2 becomes a successful release.

A huge chunk of Nothing’s software and hardware teams are made up of former OnePlus employees, a source familiar with the company’s operations tells Inverse. The source, who asked to remain anonymous, said that 70% of the software team and 30% of the hardware team are from OnePlus.

As per the report, Kyle Kiang, former OnePlus Chief Marketing Officer, has joined Nothing as Vice President of North America. He will apparently be leading the global launch of the Nothing Phone 2. In addition, the Nothing OS is reportedly being designed by a team of ex-OnePlus software leads, including Shawn Liu, one of the co-founders of Nothing.

Liu used to be the head of mobile product development at OnePlus and led the development of OxygenOS. He is now said to be tasked with bringing that same design philosophy to Nothing OS. Cookie Xu and Sam Lee, two ex-OnePlus software leads who are now reported to be in charge of software products and mobile software respectively at Nothing, are also playing a key role in the design of Nothing OS.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor on the handset is said to be paired with 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The smartphone is also tipped to pack a 5,000mAh battery with fast wired and wireless charging support. Stereo speakers and NFC have been mentioned as well.

The leak also mentions satellite connectivity but we won’t be very certain about that. It’s possible Nothing could team up with a satellite communications company like Globalstar to offer the feature in the US but that’s just a far-fetched assumption. It seems unlikely since the investments involved in rolling out this feature would make Nothing’s budget go off the roof.

Surprisingly, the handset managed to prove, to a large extent, that the hype wasn’t for “nothing”. Now, the brand has started teasing the launch of the next-gen model— the Nothing Phone (2) and has even announced a launch window. Here are the details.

The new Nothing Phone coming soon

Nothing today announced that the Phone (2) will launch this summer. While the company did not reveal the exact date, it confirmed that the phone will also be available to purchase in the US. Additionally, an animated video shared by the brand potentially hints at some design elements. It suggests the smartphone will arrive with lights on the back, similar to its predecessor.

Details about the Phone 2 are limited as of now but recently a Qualcomm executive accidentally revealed that the handset will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset. This is a significant upgrade over the Phone 1 which gets the Snapdragon 778G+ SoC under the hood. The device is also rumored to pack an AMOLED screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz and an FHD+ resolution. It will likely run on Nothing OS-based Android 13.

The upcoming Phone (2) is speculated to feature 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. Reports suggest that it will be equipped with a 5,000mAh battery; however, details regarding its fast charging capabilities remain undisclosed. A report that surfaced last month claimed that the model number of the upcoming Nothing Phone (2) is A065. Since Nothing’s Phone (1) came out in India last year, its follow-up is also likely to come out in the country. A new Nothing device with model number AIN065 has appeared in the database of the BIS authority. It appears to be the Indian variant of the Phone (2). The BIS listing is a good hint that the company could be planning to launch the smartphone in the coming weeks.

The BIS listing has no information on the specifications of the device. However, recent reports have revealed some of its details. First of all, earlier this month, a Qualcomm executive accidentally revealed that the Phone (2) will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset. Hence, it appears that the device will be packed with top-notch specifications.

There have been rumours that the Nothing Phone (2) will have an AMOLED screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz. It is likely to support an FHD+ resolution and feature an in-screen fingerprint scanner. It will run on Nothing OS-based Android 13.

The SoC is likely to be paired with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of built-in storage. It is expected to pack a 5,000mAh battery. However, there is no information available on the fast charging capabilities of the Phone (2). Like the predecessor, the Phone (2) is expected will support wireless charging.
