LG is apparently gearing up for the launch of a new wearable device. This gadget is reportedly a new ultra light AR glasses, which might be launched sometime in 2021.

According to a new ETNews report, sources have claimed that the South Korean tech giant is teaming up with Japan’s NTT DoCoMo. This collaboration will be to build AR glasses that are “very light.” Apparently, the new glasses would weigh in just 79.38 grams. Although this is still heavier than a typical pair of eyeglasses, it is still a lot lighter than AR or VR headsets that are currently available in the market.

The report suggested that both LG and NTT DoCoMo are in the process of discussing and finalizing features. Notably, the two companies have partnered up in the past as well to work on both 5G and LTE networking. Unfortunately, LG has declined to comment on the matter at this moment, but if the reports are true, we can see these new AR glasses sometime in 2021.

While the idea of a light AR glass sure is attractive, there are still too many unknown factors. With the weight of the wearable being so light, we can expect that most of the processing power and calculations being done through a smartphone or another secondary gadget, with connectivity made through a custom specialized software. Although, that is just a speculation, so take it with a pinch of salt.

A recent report by Nikkei indicated that Japan has begun planning a comprehensive strategy for “post-5G” (6G) technology that achieves communication speeds  10 times faster than 5G by 2030. Japan’s largest carrier NTT Docomo has now begun drawing up a strategy to be a leader in 6G technology towards achieving the 2030 commercial launch plan.

The mobile operator Friday released a white paper outlining its views on 5G evolution and 6G communications technology, noting mobile communication systems typically evolve into the next generation over a period of about ten years.

The report touches on related technical concepts and the expected diverse use cases of evolving 5G and new 6G communication technologies, along with the components of the technology and performance targets.

Docomo, which started its 5G research in 2010, said in a statement it will promote cooperation among government, industry and academia, along with diverse stakeholders. It said it would continue to research and develop its technology to enable the further evolution of mobile communications. Areas of focus include pioneering new frequency bands including terahertz frequencies and developing ultra-low energy and ultra-low-cost communications.

Japan’s earlier statement also detailed that the country will invest $2.03 billion in the research and development of 6G. It’s expected to provide a speed 10 times faster than what the world will witness in terms of 5G technology, which sounds freaking ridiculous.

NTT Docomo Inc, Japan’s largest telecom carrier by users, is resuming orders from Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, as the Chinese telecom giant is securing key support from the big three telecom operators in Japan despite US restrictions. The telco has restarted taking orders for Huawei’s high-end P30 Pro smartphone, which will be on sale in September.

This is pretty big news for Huawei in Japan, and it’s a big step towards regaining their position. In May, Japan’s leading carriers SoftBank, KDDI, and NTT Docomo said they were suspending sales of Huawei products without giving further details. The decision came soon after the Chinese giant rolled out its flagship P30 models in the country.

With the move, the three major telecom operators in Japan, with other two being SoftBank Corp and KDDI Corp, have all restarted sales of Huawei’s products, after they delayed the launch in May. Even Japanese e-commerce behemoth Rakuten Inc.’s mobile unit has been offering the phones from Aug. 5 after delaying the planned launch from May.

The Docomo announcement came after the US Commerce Department gave Huawei another 90-day reprieve allowing suppliers to sell to the company on Monday. Huawei reported sales in the six months through June rose 23.2 percent over a year earlier. Its chairman, Liang Hua, said in July that Huawei was reviewing its core products to make sure they all could be delivered to customers without American components.

In a bid to introduce 5G compatibility in Japan, Xiaomi and NTT Docomo have joined hands with each other. Japan’s largest telecom operator, NTT Docomo has reached a global license agreement with China’s electronics giant, Xiaomi. The agreement will cover its essential wireless standards patents in cellular networks.

Tadanobu Ando, General Manager of Intellectual Property Department at NTT Docomo, said in a statement: “Xiaomi recognized the value of a license to NTT DOCOMO’s cellular wireless standard essential patents. Xiaomi’s sophisticated IP team was professional and appreciated the continued investment by NTT Docomo in innovation.”

Overall the agreement will help both the companies to grow and innovate the 5G technology in Japan. It will also help Xiaomi to continually provide the best user experience to their customers. Xiaomi can now innovate more on the grounds of 5G wireless technologies. On the other hand, Samsung and Apple have already started working on their devices to make them compatible with the 5G networks.

Paul Lin, Vice President of IP Strategy at Xiaomi, said in a statement: “The NTT DOCOMO team demonstrated the value to Xiaomi of taking a license to NTT DOCOMO’s cellular wireless standard essential patents on FRAND terms. Xiaomi is very willing to take a license to quality SEP patent portfolios on fair and reasonable terms to help continue to bring the best user experience to our customers.”

It is expected that Japan will get fully functional 5G networks by 2020. NTT Docomo is planning to fully rollout the 5G technology across Japan before the Tokyo Summer Olympics in 2020.

The Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem has been designed by Qualcomm to support 5G networks. Today, Qualcomm has confirmed that at least 18 different smartphone manufacturing companies will be launching Snapdragon X50 5G modem enabled smartphones. Moreover, the U.S.-based chip maker has confirmed that various telecom service providers from across the world will be starting the trail run of 5G networks soon.

The Snapdragon X50 5G NR (New Radio) mobile modem chipset can attain download speeds of several gigabits. In October 2017, Qualcomm had unveiled the new 5G modem and confirmed that it would be commercially available during the first half of 2019. Now that Qualcomm has released press releases for the carriers and smartphone manufacturers that will be supporting and releasing 5G smartphones featuring Snapdragon X50 modem, it seems that the company is well on track of fulfilling the promise of making 5G phones available in 2019.

The smartphone OEMs that are working with Qualcomm to launch phones with Snapdragon X50 5G modem next year are Asus, Fujitsu Limited, Fujitsu Connected Technologies Limited, HMD Global (Nokia), HTC, Inseego/Novatel Wireless, LG, NetComm Wireless, NETGEAR, OPPO, Sharp Corporation, Sierra Wireless, Sony Mobile, Telit, vivo, Wingtech, WNC, Xiaomi and ZTE.

Two of the major smartphone manufacturing companies namely, Apple and Huawei are missing from the list. Samsung has signed a separate cross-license partnership with Qualcomm recently which may also include plans to launch 5G enabled Samsung phones soon. Lenovo too is absent from the list.

The list of select global mobile operators that will conducing live and OTA mobile 5G NR trials include AT&T, British Telecom, China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, KDDI, KT Corporation, LG Uplus, NTT DOCOMO, Orange, Singtel, SK Telecom, Sprint, Telstra, TIM, Verizon and Vodafone Group.

Which smartphone company will be releasing the first 5G smartphone next year? OPPO CEO Tony Chen had confirmed in the previous month that it will be among the first manufacturers to release a 5G smartphone. ZTE CEO Lixin Cheng has recently claimed that a 5G ZTE phone would be launching at the end of 2018 or early 2019. Two months ago, Huawei CEO Yu Richard said that a 5G Huawei smartphone would be releasing in the second half of 2019.

5G smartphones featuring Snapdragon X50 will allow users to connect to public Wi-Fi without login. Such phones will offer ultrafast downloads, high-speed internet browsing, topnotch quality video and voice calls, lag free streaming of 360-degreee video and instant cloud access. Qualcomm will be also bringing 5G connectivity on other devices like Always Connected PCs, VR and AR.
