NVIDIA has lost its entire share of the advanced chip market in China after once holding a 95% dominance. This sharp decline follows strict US export restrictions that prevent the company from selling its most advanced chips to Chinese companies. “At the moment, we’re 100 percent out of China,” confirmed NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang during a recent event.

Sudden Market Collapse

The US government has banned the export of NVIDIA’s high-end AI chips to China since 2022. This includes the NVIDIA A100, NVIDIA H100, and NVIDIA H200. Although NVIDIA was allowed to sell a downgraded chip, the NVIDIA H20, the Chinese cyberspace regulator launched a security investigation, discouraging local companies from buying it. As a result, the company has been forced out of the Chinese market entirely.

Huang’s Warning

Jensen Huang criticized the export restrictions, calling them a “mistake.” He warned that cutting off China would push the market toward domestic competitors like Huawei Technologies. “What harms China could oftentimes also harm America, and even worse,” he said. Huang emphasized the importance of rethinking policies to maintain global leadership in technology.

China’s Rapid Self-Sufficiency Drive

China is moving fast to reduce its dependence on foreign chips. Domestic companies are investing heavily to develop their own AI chips and manufacturing technologies. Huawei has already introduced an advanced AI chip roadmap and new clustering methods to replace NVIDIA’s products. Other tech giants like Alibaba Group Holding, Tencent Holdings, ByteDance, and Baidu are also pouring resources into semiconductor research and development.

A Powerful AI Talent Base

Huang highlighted that China has nearly 50% of the world’s AI researchers. He warned that excluding the country from US technology could slow down global AI progress. He also noted China’s strong work culture, provincial competition, and deep talent pool that enable it to close the gap with the US quickly. According to Huang, China is only “nanoseconds behind” in chipmaking.

Strategic Impact on the US

Analysts warn that the restrictions may hurt US companies more than expected. By pushing NVIDIA out of the Chinese market, the US may be allowing Chinese firms to strengthen their supply chains and become more independent. This could reduce American companies’ global competitiveness and limit their access to one of the world’s largest chip markets.

Event and Industry Reaction

Huang made these remarks on October 6 at a Citadel Securities event in New York, where he spoke with Konstantine Buhler of Sequoia Capital. A video of the interview was released the following week and widely reported by the South China Morning Post. His comments reflect growing concern in the tech industry about the long-term consequences of the US-China tech war.

The collapse of NVIDIA’s market share in China highlights the impact of geopolitical tensions on the global semiconductor industry. While the US aims to protect its national security, the strategy may also be boosting China’s technological independence. As the chip race accelerates, the world is watching closely to see whether policy shifts will ease tensions or deepen the divide between the world’s two largest economies.

Though many of us recognize Nvidia for its RTX series graphics cards, the company is much more than that. Especially in the field of artificial intelligence, this tech giant can be described as the unsung hero of our current AI era. Numerous AI services, including ChatGPT, utilize Nvidia’s chips, and this fact is drawing increasing attention from users every day.

Recently, some of the company’s chips even went on sale in Japan. However, the prices of Nvidia’s generative AI chips are soaring in Japan, driven by the weak yen and strong demand for the chips. Here are the details…

Nvidia H100 generative AI chip prices skyrocket in Japan

If you’re working on artificial intelligence technology, Nvidia’s H100 GPU is just what you need. This chip is the most powerful GPU available in the market, and it’s highly sought after by companies creating new generative AI products and services. In September 2023, Nvidia’s official sales partner in Japan, GDEP Advance, increased the catalog price of the H100 GPU by 16%. As a result, the H100 GPU is now priced at approximately 5.44 million yen ($36,300) in Japan.

The weak yen is also contributing to the rising cost of Nvidia’s GPUs in Japan. The yen has lost about 20% of its value against the US dollar in the past year. This means that Japanese companies have to pay more yen to buy the same amount of US dollars, which they need to buy Nvidia’s GPUs from the US.

The rising cost of Nvidia’s GPUs is a concern for Japanese companies that are developing generative AI products and services. These companies are already facing high costs for other components, such as data storage and computing power. The rising cost of GPUs is adding to these costs, and it could make it more difficult for Japanese companies to compete in the global generative AI market.

Despite the rising costs, some Japanese companies are still willing to pay more for Nvidia’s GPUs. This is because the H100 GPU is the most powerful GPU on the market, and it is essential for developing the most advanced generative AI applications. It is unclear how long the rising prices of Nvidia’s GPUs will continue in Japan.

Nvidia is seeing a bump in GPU sales in the market over its AI capabilities. However, while this is great news for its GPU business, it would also have the company face stock shortages till the end of this year.

Nvidia GPU shortages could last till December

The company will likely struggle to meet demand as it tried to have TSMC to increase production. For those unaware, Nvidia’s graphics card’s chips are manufactured by TSMC. The boom in the GPU business for the brand also arrives amid the surge in AI applications. For those unaware, the American tech giant had bet on the advancements on AI technologies that ChatGPT and other AI based models are now based on. Notably, this is also in line with our previous report that mentioned AI chips from the company selling for a whopping 40,000 US Dollars on eBay.

This demand is particularly high for its brand new A100 and H100 GPUs that tech firms are seeking to buy. As of right now, reports have also claimed that the massive demand for AI chips has caused stock issues for Nvidia, who is struggling to meet these high demands. Furthermore, Team Green is also looking to bump up its orders to the world’s largest contract chipmaker, TSMC, since its A100 GPU is based on its 7nm process while the H100 is based on the more advanced 4nm TSMC process node.

The high demand has also led to a spike in prices as well. The company is selling modified versions of its A100 and H100 GPUs that are dubbed A800 and H800 (to circumvent US sanctions) at a price that is 40 percent higher than its MSRP. Even the delivery cycle for the new cards have been impacted as Nvidia seeks to ship GPUs to tech firms outside of China first.

Nvidia’s cutting-edge graphics cards, the H100 processors, are seeing prices north of $40,000 on eBay, as the appetite for chips essential to develop and implement artificial intelligence (AI) software keeps expanding. John Carmack, a pioneer in 3D gaming and ex-consulting technology chief at Meta, drew attention to the H100 processors’ prices on Twitter. As of Friday, at least eight H100s were listed on eBay, with prices between $39,995 and just under $46,000. Some retailers have sold the H100 for approximately $36,000 in the past.

Nvidia’s top A.I. chips are selling for more than $40,000 on eBay

Launched last year, the H100 represents Nvidia’s most recent flagship AI chip, replacing the A100, a roughly $10,000 chip often referred to as the AI application “workhorse.” Developers utilize the H100 to create large language models (LLMs), which underpin AI applications like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Running these systems necessitates powerful computers that can process terabytes of data for extended periods. Additionally, they depend on significant computing power for generating text, images, or predictions.

Nvidia H100 GPUs going for $40k on eBay. pic.twitter.com/7NOBI8cn3k
— John Carmack (@ID_AA_Carmack) April 14, 2023

The collaboration of hundreds of top-tier Nvidia GPUs is essential for training AI models, especially sizable ones like GPT. Microsoft has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in tens of thousands of Nvidia A100 chips for ChatGPT development. Nvidia currently holds a significant share of the AI chip market. Nvidia’s offerings also include the DGX supercomputer, which houses eight GPUs working together. The company announced new services earlier this year that enable businesses to rent DGX computers for $37,000 per month.

However, the system uses Nvidia’s older A100 processors at this price point. According to Nvidia, the H100 is the first chip tailored to the specific AI architecture responsible for numerous recent AI breakthroughs, known as transformers. Industry insiders anticipate the need for even more powerful chips to create larger and more data-intensive models than those presently available.

Nvidia has announced a modification of its flagship H100 chip to create a version that complies with export regulations for the Chinese market. This move comes after US regulators imposed rules that prevented Nvidia from selling its most advanced chips, the A100 and H100, to Chinese customers, citing national security concerns. Here are the details…

Nvidia tweaks flagship H100 chip for export to China as H800

Last November, Nvidia had designed the A800 chip, a slightly less capable version of the A100, to make it legal for export to China. Now, the company has similarly developed a China-export version of the H100 chip, called the H800. This new chip is being utilized by the cloud computing units of major Chinese technology firms, including Alibaba Group Holding, Baidu, and Tencent Holdings.

The H800 chip is poised to support a growing number of startups focusing on developing large language models and generative AI technologies. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that these startups can now rely on Alibaba, Tencent, and Baidu to provide excellent cloud capabilities powered by Nvidia’s AI.

US regulators imposed restrictions on AI chips last fall to slow down China’s development in crucial technology sectors such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence. The intent was to hinder the country’s efforts to modernize its military. The imposed rules ban chips with both powerful computing capabilities and high chip-to-chip data transfer rates, as transfer speed is crucial when training AI models on vast amounts of data. Slower transfer rates result in extended training time.

According to a chip industry source in China, the H800 primarily reduces the chip-to-chip data transfer rate to about half the rate of the flagship H100. Although the Nvidia spokesperson did not elaborate on how the H800 differs from the H100, they emphasized that “our 800 series products are fully compliant with export control regulations.”
