AMD Radeon RX 7800M XT benchmark hints that it can rival Nvidia RTX 4070

AMD is apparently working on a next gen mobile graphics card for upcoming gaming notebooks. The new GPU had its benchmark performance leaked, which reveals that it can rival a popular RTX 4000 series card from Nvidia.

AMD Radeon RX 7800M XT may soon ship in mid range gaming laptops

The performance leak arrives from benchmark sighting on 3DMark TimeSpy, which is a popular benchmarking platform. This leak shows that the upcoming mobile GPU will be based on the Navi 32 GPU and will feature 3,840 stream processors. Furthermore, the new Team Red GPU will have 60 CUs (Compute Units) and will offer 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM. It will be equipped with 240 TMUs (Texture Mapping Units) and 128 ROPs (Raster Outputs). Notably, this leak also arrives after the company announced the Ryzen XDNA AI tech during the Computer 2023 event.

Since it is a mobile variant for notebooks, the new AMD Radeon RX 7800M XT will likely feature lower memory bus with lower clockspeeds compared to its yet to be announced desktop variant. This means that it could feature a 192 bit bus spread across three MCDs (Memory Complex Dies) with up to 64MB of L3 or Infinity Cache. Looking at the benchmark scores, the RX 7800M XT scored 17,842 points in the 3DMark TimeSpy test.

In other words, this can rival the Nvidia GeFore RTX 4070 or even the RTX 3080 desktop graphics card. It is even on par with the RTX 4080 mobile version as well. This is quite impressive since the Radeon RTX 7900 XT can rival the RTX 4070 Ti desktop graphics card variant. Meaning, the new Radeon RX 7800M XT will likely be found in upcoming mid range gaming laptops as well.

Nvidia, the undisputed leader in the graphics card market, has been expanding its product lineup, including the dominating RTX 40-series. Recently, they introduced the budget-friendly RTX 4070 model. However, many users still face challenges in finding these cards. Those looking to buy a new card often struggle to find stock or are forced to pay sky-high prices for the scarce 40-series models. It seems that this situation might be intentional, as reports suggest that Nvidia is holding off on increasing the production of the RTX 40-series. Here are the details….

Nvidia Reportedly Holding Off on Boosting RTX 40-Series Production: Is It A Strategic Move?

According to a recent report by DigiTimes, Nvidia may be taking a strategic approach with its latest GeForce RTX 40-series GPUs based on the Ada Lovelace architecture. The company’s backend service providers, Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL) and King Yuan Electronics (KYEC), have reportedly not seen increased orders for testing and packaging of the new GPUs. This suggests that Nvidia is waiting for its partners to sell off remaining GeForce RTX 30-series inventory before supplying them with the latest generation graphics chips.

Despite having introduced an extensive range of Ada Lovelace GPUs for client applications, including the AD102, AD103, AD104, AD106, and AD107, Nvidia has not signaled to its OSAT providers to scale up production for the GeForce RTX 40-series. The company had previously pre-paid TSMC for silicon manufacturing services during 2021-2022, and likely has N4-based Ada Lovelace wafers in stock. However, it still needs to book OSAT capacity before ramping up orders to increase supply.

Usually, Nvidia’s sales of GPUs to its partners trend upward in the third quarter, which should lead to the company booking OSAT services at this time. However, if the DigiTimes report is accurate, it seems that Nvidia is holding off on increasing testing and packaging of its Ada Lovelace silicon. Nvidia’s partners have already started shipping GeForce RTX 4070, RTX 4070 Ti, RTX 4080, and RTX 4090 graphics cards for desktops. Despite being among the top graphics cards available, demand for these products is reportedly not as high as Nvidia would like.

The market has also seen a variety of laptops equipped with GeForce RTX 4050, RTX 4060, RTX 4070, RTX 4080, and RTX 4090 Laptop GPUs. With Ada Lovelace graphics processors already covering almost all market segments, the anticipated popularity of solutions like the GeForce RTX 4070 and the expected RTX 4060 suggests that Nvidia will need to increase GPU volume and packaging services.

Nvidia and its partners may already have enough RTX 30- and 40-series GPUs in stock, negating the need to ramp up testing and assembly ahead of the rumored GeForce RTX 4050 and RTX 4060 GPU launch in May-June. Furthermore, Nvidia has not yet attempted to drop prices into the sub-$500 range. Nvidia unveils GeForce RTX 4070 GPU, Up to 1.7x faster than RTX 3070 Ti

Nvidia has just launched its highly anticipated mid range graphics card model from its latest RTX 4000 series of GPUs. The new card is the GeForce RTX 4070, which arrives with various improvements over its predecessors. So let’s have a look.

The American tech giant has unveiled its new GPU from its Ada Lovelace Architecture. Oddly enough, the company launched the RTX 4070 Ti back in January 2023. Typically, the Ti variants arrive after the base model. But this time around, the RTX 4070 launch comes a couple of months after the 4070 Ti. Furthermore, the new card also supports DLSS 3.0 along with dual AV1 video encoders.

This helps in offering up to 20 percent better performance on popular video editing and livestreaming apps like Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, OBS, and Jianying in terms of video export speeds. The new graphics card offers a higher VRAM capacity over its predecessor with GDDR6X RAM along with 5,888 CUDA cores. Thanks to this, it offers up to 1.7 times faster than GeForce RTX 3070 Ti while also being 23 percent more power efficient.

The new RTX 4070 supports up to 8K resolution at 60Hz or with 4K at 240Hz with DSC and HDR. As per official claims, the RTX 4070 GPU will enable you to play some hefty modern game titles at 1440p resolution at over 100 frames per second. This includes titles like Plague Tale: Requiem, Dying Light 2 Stay Human, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, and others. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 is priced at 599 US Dollars in the US for the Founders Edition, while the card costs 62,000 INR. The card will go on sale on April 13 across the globe.

RTX 4060 & 4070 Memory Configurations Confirmed by Gigabyte’s App

According to Gigabyte’s Control Center software, the upcoming Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 and GeForce RTX 4070 graphics cards will have 8GB and 12GB of memory, respectively. While the memory type is not confirmed, rumors suggest that the 4070 will have GDDR6X memory while the 4060 will have regular GDDR6 memory. The latest version of Gigabyte‘s Control Center app, version 23.03.02.01, now supports the Gigabyte RTX 4070 Aero OC 12GB (GV-N4070AERO OC-12G) and the Gigabyte RTX 4060 Gaming OC 8GB (GV-N4060GAMING OC-8GD) products, revealing their memory capacities.

The GeForce RTX 4070 is expected to have the same 192-bit 12GB GDDR6X memory subsystem as the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, but with fewer active CUDA cores. It is unclear how well the GeForce RTX 4070 will perform as a graphics card, but it is expected to be priced lower than the 4070 Ti.

On the other hand, the 8GB of GDDR6 memory on the GeForce RTX 4060 is considered a downgrade from the GeForce RTX 3060, which carries 12GB of GDDR6 memory. This is due to the AD107 and AD106 graphics processors that power the RTX 4060 and RTX 4060 Ti products, which only have a 128-bit memory interface, making it only possible to use 8GB or 16GB of memory.

The price and release date for the GeForce RTX 4070 and 4060 are still uncertain. The GeForce RTX 4070 is expected to be released on April 13, 2023, with pricing still unknown. For the GeForce RTX 4060, it is unclear when it will be released and at what price. Given that the outgoing 3060 and 3060 Ti are priced at $329 and $399, respectively, the highest price most potential buyers would be willing to consider for the 4060 would be around $499.

Dell G15 & G16 Laptops With 13th Gen Intel Chips & Nvidia RTX 40 GPUs Hitting Store Shelves Later This Month

Dell has just announced that the refreshed G15 and the G16 budget gaming laptops will be hitting store shelves later this month in the US market. The laptops were initially revealed at CES 2023, however, Dell did not reveal the pricing of these devices.

The new laptops will come with the latest hardware from Intel and Nvidia. This means Intel’s 13th Gen CPUs and Nvidia’s RTX GPU. According to the CES announcement, both the Dell G15 and G16 laptops will come equipped with a Core i9-13900HX processor, up to 32 GB of DDR5 memory that is upgradeable, an RTX 4070 graphics card, and a storage capacity of up to 2 TB in the high-end model. The main distinguishing factor between the two laptops is their available screen options.

Those who opt for the Dell G15 can choose between a 15.6-inch display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, a Full HD resolution, and 250 nits of brightness, or a 165 Hz screen with 300 nits of brightness. In contrast, the G16 boasts a larger 16-inch display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 and a brightness of 300 nits, available in either a 165 or 240 Hz refresh rate.

The base variants of the Dell G15 and G16 laptops, featuring Intel Raptor Lake CPUs and Nvidia RTX GPUs, are priced at US$899 and US$1,499, respectively. Time Spy Benchmarks Indicate That RTX 4080 Is Quicker Than RTX 3090 Ti

Nvidia is expected to be working on the cutting-edge new generation RTX 40 series graphics cards. The American tech giant is planning three variants, namely RTX 4070, RTX 4080, and RTX 4090.

All the new RTX 40 series graphics cards were tested on the basis of the 3DMark TimeSpy Extreme Test and the performance capabilities have been revealed. The following facts are courtesy of popular leaker @kopite7kimi. According to the leaker, the RTX 40 series will be groundbreaking in terms of efficiency and power.

RTX 4080, TSE >15000,
RTX 4070, TSE ~10000.
These scores are based on specs I mentioned before.

As usual, use caution when interpreting these results. Kopite admits they aren’t quite certain of the information supplied, but the leaker has a remarkable track record for accuracy. It’s unclear whether Kopite truly saw some real performance data and only obscured it to protect the (not so) innocent, or if these are just educated estimations. We’ve been generating similar estimates based on suspected specs for a while.

For comparison, Kopite already released RTX 4090 Time Spy Extreme data a week prior, which shows that GPU performance is around 30% faster than the RTX 3090 Tis with the highest clock speeds and liquid cooling. Kopite’s RTX 4080 and 4070 statistics aren’t that stunning when used as a starting point with that data.

Kopite predicts that the RTX 4080 will achieve a Time Spy Extreme graphics score of 15,000 points, which is slightly higher than the RTX 3090 Ti’s result at regular frequencies. With regard to Time Spy Extreme, in particular, this information would make the RTX 4080 40% to 50% quicker than the RTX 3080 10GB, which would be a significant generational advancement. Customers will receive a very potent graphics card for the money if GPU pricing for the 4080 is even remotely comparable to those for the 3080.

The RTX 4070 projections aren’t as remarkable, but they still represent a good generation-to-generation improvement (if true). The majority of the RTX 3080 10GB results in the 3DMark results browser completely align with Kopite’s prediction that the RTX 4070 will get 10,000 points in Time Spy Extreme. This corresponds to a performance increase of 25% over the 3070 and performance on par with the RTX 3080.

For the RTX 4090 and 4080 in particular, it will almost probably result in record-breaking generational performance increases, which is something we’ve long believed about Nvidia’s RTX 40-series design. However, it will increase power consumption. The price of GPUs is now the largest unknowable, and it could change significantly depending on supply-chain concerns and the launch date for the 40-series. Performance is only useful to a certain extent if it is affordable.

Also, keep in mind that 3DMark simply reflects one artificial graphics test; what we actually want to see are benchmarks from actual gaming.
