Xiaomi has partnered with Lumilan, a company specializing in the R&D, manufacturing, sales, and service of new OLED materials. As DCS notes, Xiaomi is aiming to polish the underlying technology of display materials by participating in research and development of key OLED materials. So, Xiaomi is not going to manufacture the end product or the display panels themselves, at least for now.

Xiaomi’s joint venture aims to improve the underlying display technology

We are already seeing a number of display manufacturers like BOE crafting great OLED panels that are getting brighter and brighter. An investment in underlying technologies could contribute to overcoming certain limitations and improving the end product even further.

For this purpose, Xiaomi launched “Xiaomi-Lumilan OLED Key Materials and Devices Joint Laboratory” in Ningbo, one of the industrial centers in China.

In the unveiling ceremony of the joint laboratory, Wu Cangzhi, general manager of Xiaomi’s mobile phone display and touch department, said: “Xiaomi’s goal in the new decade is to invest heavily in underlying core technologies and strive to become a global leader in new generation hard-core technology” (machine translation). He expects to consolidate Xiaomi’s underlying technology in the field of display materials with this latest development. He also noted that this joint venture with Lumilan will focus on the pain points of the OLED industry and strive to improve the performance of display products.

Chairman of OLED manufacturer Lumilan noted, “Lumilan will work closely with Xiaomi, starting from the Xiaomi-Lumilan OLED key materials and devices joint laboratory.” They are aiming to overcome the existing technological bottlenecks in the OLED display industry.

Apple is gearing up to unveil its latest generation of iPad lineup next year. The company is expected to unveil a new 12.9-inch iPad Air and the OLED iPad Pros. Reportedly, LG Display will be the one making the screens, with production rumored to kick off early next year.

LG Display to make most of iPad Pro OLED screens

According to a new report, the South Korean tech giant will be manufacturing the OLED panel for the new OLED iPad Pro three months earlier than previously expected. In other words, the iPad Pro OLED displays will reportedly begin production in February 2024. In our previous report, Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that the Apple iPad Pro OLED will launch sometime in the second quarter of next year.

The information arrives from a new Korea Herald report. LG Display will be a major supplier of the OLED screens for the 2024 OLED iPad Pro models. The company will be responsible for 60 percent of all OLED panel orders, while the rest will be sourced via Samsung Display. The production will kick off three months ahead of schedule at the brand’s production site in Paju, Gyeonggi Province.

For those unaware, the iPad Pro is moving away from mini LED screens with OLED panels that are similar to the LTPO backplane as the iPhone 15 Pro models. But their larger size for the iPad would mean that they would be more expensive than the iPhones. The new report hints that the price for the iPad Pro OLED displays could be around three times higher.

As we know, LG Display is a prominent player in the global display technology industry. They specialize in developing, manufacturing, and selling display technologies, with a strong focus on OLED and LCD technologies. LG Display supplies displays for a wide range of applications, including smartphones, tablets, TVs, and automotive displays.

Now according to a recent report from the Korean Herald, LG Display and LG Chem, two major companies, have together created a key material called p-type dopants for OLED screens. Before this, they had to buy it from other countries. This is a big step for LG Display as they are trying to make more OLED parts in their own country. Last year, they increased the amount of materials they got from local suppliers from 58% to 64%.

LG Paves the Way with In-House OLED Material Development

Dopants change how OLEDs work. P-type dopants, one kind of these materials, help OLEDs shine evenly, use less power, and last longer. However, some p-type dopants can be easily damaged by air.

This new achievement is the result of 10 years of teamwork between LG Display and LG Chem. LG Display worked on designing the material, while LG Chem made it. Their new material works as well as the one they used to buy.

Yoon Soo-young, an executive at LG Display, said they’ve been working on making their own core materials since they launched their first big OLED TV in 2013. This new material is even more important for a new kind of OLED that is brighter and lasts longer.

By making their own p-type dopants, LG Display hopes to have a better supply chain, protect their ideas, and stay ahead in the OLED market. As of early 2023, LG had the biggest share in the global OLED TV market, more than Sony and Samsung.

LG Display will use this new material in different sizes of OLED panels in the future. Lee Hyun-woo, another executive at LG Display, said that making and buying materials locally makes them stand out in the OLED market.

This move towards self-reliance and technological advancement in OLED technology is a significant development, especially considering LG’s potential collaboration with Apple. There are reports suggesting that Apple is working with Samsung Display and LG Display to create bezel-less OLED displays for future iPhones.

The laser machine recreates the broken traces within an OLED panel in the same way they were initially made in the factory. The repair process takes just a few seconds, and the green line disappears instantly.

The best part is that the screen does not need to be taken apart or even turned off during the repair process. Of course, this does not mean that the repair is easy. An expert still needs to find the location of the fault that causes the green line on the OLED and then correct it with the laser from the machine. However, this is much easier and more cost-effective than replacing the panel as before. It is expected that the first generation of this product will become much more common and developed in the near future.

Samsung Display, the world’s largest OLED panel maker, is investing billions of dollars to improve the efficiency of its OLED production in anticipation of increased orders from Apple.

The South Korean company is investing around $3.05 billion to set up new OLED production lines at its Tangjeong factory, which will become the world’s first to start mass-producing 8.6-generation OLED substrates measuring 2,620 x 2,200mm each. These substrates will then be converted into mid-sized OLED panels for laptops and tablets, with Samsung Display planning to manufacture around 10 million OLED panels every year.

Samsung aims to double production efficiency with 8.6-generation OLED substrates

Samsung Display’s move to upgrade from sixth-generation glass substrates to 8.6-generation substrates will double its production efficiency and increase production capacity. However, it is a more complex process that could compel Japanese production equipment firms to improve their technology. LG Display is also investing $2.46 billion to improve its OLED production facilities and is expected to adopt sixth-generation substrates in the future.

Both Samsung Display and LG Display are competing to secure OLED manufacturing contracts from Apple, which is expected to launch its first OLED iPad in 2024 and its first OLED MacBook Pro in 2026. The two South Korean companies are also competing to keep Chinese display manufacturing firms out of the OLED market.

Chinese firms have already captured most of the LCD market and are expanding their OLED production capacity with subsidies from the Chinese government. As a result, it is crucial for LG and Samsung to hold on to their combined 80% market share to survive.

In other news, Samsung plans to cut memory chip production by 25% as their Q1 2023 profits fall by 95% due to weak chip demand. The company has also confirmed that their Exynos chipsets may return in Galaxy flagship smartphones, and rumors have been circulating that Samsung may launch the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 earlier than expected.

“If this technology is properly developed, people could simply use their smartphones to map the magnetic fields around them, for example, to spot defects in diamonds or jewelry. This also has applications in industry, such as finding defects in construction materials or as a biomedical sensor.”

Omdia’s latest Display long-term demand forecast tracker indicates that demand for displays in 2023 will grow by 6.2% year-on-year. The sector went through a challenging period, especially in 2022, due to increased inflation and interest rates. A decline was expected following the Covid-19 pandemic, but global economic conditions, supply problems and the energy crisis have worsened the situation.

In fact, 2022 will go down in history as the first year when flat panel displays see negative growth in space demand. Yet, according to Ricky Park, Senior Principal Analyst in Omdia’s Display research practice, if there are signs that inflation will decrease and the global economy will give positive signals, this trend will change in 2023 and 2024.

Park said on the subject: “panel prices and retail prices that have fallen for more than a year can stimulate consumer sentiment, especially the recovery speed of demand for ultra-large sized TVs, which have seen a sharp decline in prices. This will lead to a fast recovery in area demand.”

Big screen gets more common as it gets cheaper

Large panel manufacturers produce 75-inch and above displays to cut costs and increase efficiency. For this reason, the 70-inch TV market is expected to grow by more than 15% in 2022 and reach from 18 million to 21 million in 2023. There are also positive developments in OLED. This technology is expected to improve the image quality and increase its market share by reducing the price in the coming years.

If you ever owned a Galaxy watch, you know how satisfying the physical rotating bezel is to use. It’s probably the most loved feature of Samsung’s Galaxy watches. The bezel makes it easy to scroll through widgets, screens, and apps. However, according to a new leak, it might be the time to bid adieu to the beloved rotating bezel.

There were already rumors about Samsung considering ditching the classic watch design along with physical rotating bezels. Now a new tweet by tipster Ice Universe suggests that the South Korean tech giant may actually do it.

Replying to a tweet by a user, who was being optimistic about Samsung retaining the bezel on the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, the tipster Ice Universe said “the galaxy watch5 Pro will disappoint you”. He didn’t say the watch won’t have a rotating bezel, but his tweet hinted at the possibility.

It is worth mentioning that Samsung had tried to get rid of this hardware feature in previous watches too but the decision was so bemoaned by users that it had to bring it back. The rotating bezel does not hamper the watch’s waterproofing or durability and it’s actually a very popular feature among users, so we don’t really understand why Samsung is trying to self-sabotage itself by going down that road.

According to rumors, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro will sport OLED displays, Wear OS, GPS, IP rating, skin temperature measurement, and all the necessary tracking sensors. The watch will likely feature a big 580mAh battery. It is also reported that the watch 5 Pro will come with a titanium and sapphire build.

We’re still months away from the launch of Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 lineup. Samsung will likely unveil its latest Galaxy watches in August along with its brand new foldables.

A new report has revealed that nearly half of all smartphones that will be sold in 2022 will feature an OLED panel. This marks the growing popularity of the organic light emitting diode display technology in the smartphone market.

According to a TrendForce report, 39.8 percent of all smartphones sold this year feature OLED panels. On the other hand, 45 percent of total handset sold next year are expected to sport this type of display. The research analytics based firm added that major smartphone makers like Apple and Samsung‘s wider adoption of the AMOLED and OLED display technology is one of the primary reasons for the jump in market share of the OLED equipped devices.

Although, the display driver IC supply for OLED panels is currently unable to keep up with the high demand at the moment. The report added that these chipsets are relatively larger than other chips, so fewer numbers are able to be made per wafer. Most display drivers use 40 nanometer to 28 nanometer processes for the IC. As of right now, only a few foundries like TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited), Samsung Electronics, UMC, and GlobalFoundries can manufacture display driver ICs for OLEDs.

However, out of these chip making giants, only TSMC, Samsung, and UMC are the ones who were able to secure sufficient wafers to manufacture the display drivers. While other foundries are currently working on developing necessary process technology, these have have to finalize to begin mass production. Another notable factor is that different panel makers require different specifications for their display driver ICs.

The display arm of South Korean tech giant LG has announced plans to expand the production capacity of its TV OLED factory in Guangzhou, China, to meet the rising demand for its TV OLED panels. TheElec mulled the report, which hinted that the 60,000 substrates per month factory would be expanded to 90,000 substrates per month before July 2021. The details of the expansion, which will increase the factory’s capacity by 50%, show that each of the 30,000 capacity lines in the factory will be scaled up to produce additional 15,000 units each, starting from the first week of July.

LG will not be spending many resources in carrying out the upgrade. Specifically, improvements will be made to the deposition kit’s equipment to enable a shorter turnover time. This will combine with the deployment of an already installed oxide thin-film transistor backplane with 90,000 capacity but under-utilized before now.

The factory upgrade will give LG Display up to 170,000 substrates per month when its factory in South Korea is factored in. LG continues to make progress within the display arm of its business model. It has projected up to 8 million units of its OLED panels to be shipped this year, substantially higher than its estimates for 2020, which was 4.5 million units.

LG has had a mixed bag of fortunes across its businesses in recent years. This led to the shedding off of some of its unproductive units and outsourcing of others. The moves were aimed at stemming the tide of negative financial results in its balance sheet. LG Display is one of the few businesses that continue to post impressive results, together with a positive outlook in the years to come.

The sales of OLED panels from Samsung Display is expected to cross 5 billion US Dollars in the first quarter of 2021, as per a new market research report from a known analytical based firm.

Omdia recently released a new report (Via TheElec), which stated that the display maker will exceed 5.18 billion US Dollars in sales of its OLED panels in the first quarter of the next year. This marks a significant rise of 30 percent over its first quarter sales from back in 2019, which reached 3.975 billion US Dollars. The rise is backed by the rise in the use of OLED panels in 5G smartphones. For those unaware, OLED panels are thinner than their LCD counterparts, making them more popular for 5G smartphones.

Furthermore, other benefits include better power efficiency. Notably, Samsung Display’s OLED panels are also expected to see a surge in sales due to the Apple iPhone 12 series launch. At the moment, the South Korean tech giant supplier around 8- percent of all displays for the Cupertino based company’s 2020 iPhone lineup.

In the fourth quarter of 2020, 62.8 percent of all smartphones are expected to ship with OLED panels, as per Omdia. On the other hand, only 31.8 percent of smartphones would arrive with LCD displays. The smartphone industry is now leaning towards OLED panels, and since the company is one of the biggest suppliers, this surge in sales isn’t all that surprising.

An UBI Research report stated that the global smartphone market slowed in the first half of 2020 because of the viral outbreak. This led to the fall of demand for OLED panels. In the third quarter of this year, 113 million smartphones with OLED displays were shipped, which is down by 17.9 percent from 2019. According to TheElec report, there was one positive factor despite the overall decline as Apple shifted production of its latest iPhone lineup to include LED panels. In this year, around 50 percent of all iPhones will use OLED panels, and the number is only expected to rise to 75 percent by 2021 and 100 percent by 2022. The report also states that it previously believed that COVID-19 will have Apple only ship 180 million iPhone units in 2020, but this number has since increased to 220 million as the latest iPhone 12 is seeing healthy demand, with the Cupertino based giant seemingly overcoming the pandemic.

On the other hand, Huawei’s smartphone business is in decline and is expected to negatively affect the smartphone OLED market. In the second quarter of 2020, the Chinese tech giant accounted for 53.4 percent of all OLED smartphones in China, having a higher share than its competitors Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi combined. However, sources close to the matter have stated that the company is only expected to ship 50 million smartphone units in 2021.

China’s BOE has once again managed to lose the display contract of the iPhone going into next year. And it will have to wait for another six to seven months to reinstate Apple’s confidence.

The report by TheElec says that BOE’s B7 line at Chengdu, Sichuan Province has failed Apple’s review program for OLED supply. This reminds us of an early incident at the B11 line which also failed due to less yield rates(20%). The report notes that the B7 is older than B11 and was used for supplying OLED displays to Huawei.

The fact that the plant was far away from meeting the Cupertino Giant’s demand sends an alarming message for BOE to revamp its quality control. This means it can apply for the proposal again only by H1 next year(2021). And even if it passes the test, it might be allowed to supply only for the refurbished iPhone 12 models.

Coming back, the B7 line was reportedly used to make an on-cell OLED display for supplying to Huawei Mate 40 series apart from main Samsung, and LG vendors. Unfortunately, this plant didn’t meet Apple’s standards for making the cut into the iPhone deal. The review process, which began in September, seems to have lasted only for a month.

Do note that BOE has also failed Samsung’s testing for Galaxy S21 series before the orders went to its sister Samsung Display. Thus, the new failure yet again clears the air for Samsung Display and LG. They are likely to be the prime suppliers for the next iPhone, probably iPhone 13 series after the 12 series.

Talking about them, the next year’s iPhones, early reports indicate that it will have a 120Hz refresh rate screen. And two of the 4 models next year will reportedly adopt the LTPO(Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) display designed by Apple.

Here is where BOE is reportedly lagging behind rivals like Samsung Display and LG. Report says that Samsung, which already applied the LTPO tech on Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. And LG which already has the infrastructure, and equipment(at Paju factory) for it, are ready for the tough job.

Organic light emitting diode or OLED display panels are expected to face a major bump in sales in the second half of this year. A new report has suggested that the display technology will see a rise in sales of 107 percent in the latter half.

According to TheElec report, a UBI Research analysis has revealed that the OLED panel shipments will reach 383 million units and sales worth 28 billion US Dollars in the second half od 2020. This marks a significant rise of 66 percent and 107 percent respectively when compared to the first half. It is also indicative of the growing OLED market, which has already surpassed the LCD panels.

In the first half of 2020, OLED shipments arrived at just 231 million units, which marked a drop of 29 percent when compared to the shipments from the second half of last year. The sales during this period also fell by 36 percent in comparison to 2019, with the overall sales value coming in at just 13.53 billion US Dollars. Notably, the rise in the second half of 2020 would likely also be influenced by major smartphone launches like the Huawei Mate 40 series and Apple iPhone 12 series as well.

Furthermore, smartphone OLED display panel shipments accounted for 190 million units in the first half of 2020. In other words, smartphone displays amounted to 82.2 percent of all OLED panel sales across the globe. For sales, this was evaluated at 11.26 billion US Dollars or 83.3 percent of the total sales in the entire OLED display market. These panels were also used in smartwatches, which was the second highest in terms of shipment volumes, with 33.48 million units or 14.4 percent of the total shipments.

Last week, we posted a special story on under-display cameras with inputs from the CEO of OTI Lumionics, Michael Helander. We discussed Xiaomi, ZTE, and under screen cameras in general and how the technology would evolve in the coming years.  

Today, we publish the second and the final part of the series, focused on transparent OLEDs and foldable displays. If you haven’t read the first part yet, I would suggest reading it first here. 

As you might have already realized from the first part on under screen cameras, transparent OLED development is the real reason why we can add cameras underneath the display. But the first set of devices to get a completely transparent screen are not going to be smartphones, rather, it would be much larger devices like TVs and automobiles. 

Transparent, Clear OLEDs won’t likely replace your traditional TVs

Remember Xiaomi’s premium Mi TV Lux OLED transparent TV?

It looked very cool for a 2020 TV. But transparent OLED TVs are all set to become a lot more transparent in the coming years. 

Xiaomi’s Mi TV Lux had a transparency of around 33% which was pretty good, but Michael, CEO of OTI Lumionics, says its ConducTorr CPM material solution can help display makers manufacture TVs with nearly 65% transparency. The company even showcased such a transparent panel at Shanghai with ITRI from Taiwan. And it is currently working with panel makers to mass produce transparent displays with such high levels of transparency. 

This brings us to the next big question. 

Will the next revolutionary TV in the industry be a transparent OLED TV? Will they replace our standard OLED TVs in the future?

Michael said that he was a bit skeptical about transparent OLEDs replacing our regular OLED TVs. “To me, the value is not a transparent OLED TV replacing the normal TV that you have in your life, like the living room or your gaming monitor. I think those will stay the same. Cost will come down and we’ll see more people with OLED TV’s. And where the transparent TV is going to come in is new applications.”

He said that transparent OLED TVs are likely to be used in new places. He was quick to point out the news about the Beijing Metro installing LG’s transparent OLED TVs to display travel information. 

Michael says that when it comes to transparent OLEDs or even regular OLEDs in general, some of their most exciting applications have not been thought about yet. 

For example, take LG’s rollable OLED TV. It was initially conceptualized as a TV with a minimalistic design for your home. However, he said that consumers who checked out the TV had a very interesting question, ‘How much does a whole box weigh?’  

He explains that after seeing the TV in the enclosed state, consumers suddenly realized “my TV now rolls up to this little box and it’s pretty light. Suddenly, I can move the TV around wherever I want. Take it to my friend’s place.”

This feedback from the customers got the company thinking and they were considering bringing down the size of the base unit by making it smaller, narrower, and lighter, potentially allowing customers to carry it around. This was probably never in their minds when they developed this product, but it shows how new applications for transparent and flexible OLEDs will open up in the coming years.

Transparent OLEDs will take over your high-end Automobiles

Michael further explains that ultra-clear and transparent OLEDs can shine in the automotive industry.

It’s the age of cars with large displays in the center console and we have to thank Tesla for that. OTI Lumionics has received a lot of interest from car manufacturers to add one large, transparent display on the console. These carmakers believe that such a transparent display would offer a futuristic feeling to the driver and the passengers. Another benefit is that this design would make the interior look large and roomy.  

But there’s another area where clear, transparent OLEDs can shine – HUDs and side windows. The current transparent OLEDs are essentially just 30-40% transparent, so your see-through image is blurry. For using OLEDs in Heads up display or even on the side windows of cars, the OLEDs need to be very extremely transparent, allowing a clear view of what’s happening outside. So the driver and the passengers should be able to clearly see pedestrians, stop signs, and traffic lights. 

Even BOE recently demoed a transparent OLED solution for car side windows with a smart dimming feature.

This sounds like a cool and futuristic application of OLEDs. But how far off are we from seeing such applications in real life, especially if it’s going to be very expensive to manufacture?

Transparent OLEDs of the future won’t have exorbitant manufacturing costs 

The real area where transparent OLEDs will shine will be in larger form factors like car windows, HUDs, or even new applications like a conference table with a transparent OLED touch screen on top.

But in order for them to be feasible, it’s important that the manufacturing cost isn’t exorbitantly high.

But Michael says that it’s not going to cost a bomb manufacturing these super transparent OLEDs.  “The beauty of our solution is the process of manufacturing, the cost of making one hole in one area is exactly the same as making a million holes on the whole display regardless of the size. [Our] technology is scalable, to a very small display to a very large display.”

So it looks like cars and devices with transparent OLEDs aren’t very far off. And in the next few years, we might actually come across multiple products from different fields using a transparent OLED to enhance our experience.

OTI Lumionics helps to develop Power Efficient Foldable Displays 

Foldables are the future of smartphones and slowly, but steadily, we are seeing an inflow of foldable smartphones in the market. Samsung recently announced its second-generation Galaxy Fold Z 2 globally and even Motorola has its Razr foldable in the market. Next year, we can expect more manufacturers to join the foldable race. 

OTI Lumionics is not directly involved in the manufacturing of flexible, foldable OLED displays. But they do play an important part in foldable OLED development. The company’s cathode patterning technology helps display manufacturers to improve the power efficiency of their foldable panels.  

Michael explains that foldable smartphones have large displays, comparable to tablets and even small laptops. But you can’t add a proportionally larger battery on the device, which affects battery life.

In fact, Michael revealed that as you increase the size of the foldable OLED panel, its power consumption doesn’t increase linearly. For example, the power consumption of a 12-inch OLED panel is not double the consumption of a 6-inch panel. It’s way more than that. 

Micheal explains, “Part of that is because the top metal layer is one common layer that coats the whole display. So all the electricity and current that goes through every single Pixel in the display has to go through that very thin layer of metal and then conduct all the way to the edge of the screen and through the contacts back into the driver circuit. And so, [for a] 5 or 6-inch mobile panel that’s not a problem. As you start going to a tablet, laptop, monitor [size] that becomes problematic and can limit the brightness and power consumption of the display. This is obviously a very important issue for a foldable.”

“Our same patterning [for making transparent OLEDs] technology can be used to help solve that kind of conductivity issue which then lowers power consumption and allows you to build foldable devices that have comparable power consumption to a smaller size this way.”

Michael believes Surface Duo form factor is better for productivity than Foldables

2020 foldable smartphones aren’t perfect. They still have the issue of durability as compared to other devices and then you have to ignore some issues like the crease line on the display.

When asked about the crease line on foldables, Michael said that it’s technically challenging to remove that crease line without compromising the mechanical strength of the display. In fact, Michael says that he prefers a form factor like the Microsoft Surface Duo over foldables with two separate displays and a hinge.

Michael added that from a productivity perspective, having two separate displays made a lot of sense. 

“[On] a larger display, what I want is to be able to show multiple applications — side by side and then on a larger area display, I either have to draw a line on the display or have that cut across individual displays, which is why again.. my personal opinion is the Microsoft Duo type of concept makes a lot more sense in terms of value proposition particularly because it can be made today with existing displays at a fraction of the cost of using a very complicated, hinge and folding structure and flexible glass and flexible display, which as we’ve seen in the Galaxy fold series is incredibly expensive.”

He adds that foldable displays are definitely fun but when it comes to durability, price, and multi-tasking, a dual-display design like the Surface Duo can be very useful. He further notes that thickness is another issue with foldable phones, which doesn’t make them comfortable to put it in your pockets.

This is actually a pretty good point. When you look at the Galaxy Fold Z 2, it measures 16mm in thickness in its folded state, while the Surface Duo measures under 9mm. So in the current scenario, a form factor like the Surface duo makes sense.

Transparent, Foldable, Flexible OLEDs will reach more sectors

It’s clear that OLEDs are going to take over a lot more sectors in the coming years, right from our home, offices, transportation to AR and VR. Companies are spending billions of dollars in research and development of new generation OLED panels and there’s no doubt that we’ll soon see better and more power-efficient OLED panels in the coming years.

And when you see a product using transparent, foldable, rollable OLEDs, know that it is companies like OTI Lumionics that work behind the scenes to bring concepts that were originally seen only in movies to reality.

Turns out reports that Apple will ditch Samsung for BOE in sourcing OLED display panels for the upcoming iPhone 12 may not be accurate. Market research firm DigiTimes has disclosed that Samsung Display has secured the majority of orders for the iPhone 12’s OLED displays.

Until recently, Apple has stuck to LCD screens on its iPhone models but all that changed with the iPhone X. The model became the first iPhone to have an OLED screen and to ditch the home button. Since then, Apple had retained the use of OLED panels only on the top-end variant but continued to utilise LCD displays for all others. That will change with the iPhone 12 as there are reports that the US company will use OLED displays on all models. The iPhone 12 will also be Apple’s first 5G phone.

DigiTimes reports that Samsung will receive 80% of the orders while LG Displays and BOE Technology will share the remaining 20%. Samsung was Apple’s sole OLED display supplier for the 2017 iPhone X. LG received some orders in 2018 while BOE was added in 2019. Considering the volume of OLED panels that would be needed for all four iPhone 12 models, it makes sense for the Cupertino-based company to share the orders among the three firms. Samsung may not have the capacity to be the sole supplier and having three display manufacturers removes the risks of Samsung not being able to meet up with display panel orders for the 2020 flagship iPhones.

Xiaomi has been working on improving the AOD feature of its phones following the launch of the Mi 9. A new feature it has been working on is Dual Clock Always on Display. This allows you to set two different clocks to be shown in AOD mode and comes in handy for those who are frequent travelers.

At the moment, the feature is still limited to the developer version of supported devices but it should become available to stable users via a future update.

The Weibo post which revealed the new feature also revealed more details about Always-on-Display in general. First, the color screen AOD feature will be available to all Xiaomi phones with OLED displays including the Mi 8.

The post also said since the 2016 Mi Note 2 also uses an OLED display, it will also get the feature. The AOD update will arrive on the Mi Note 2 after the Mi 8 and the Mi MIX 3 gets it.

Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun also confirmed that all Xiaomi OLED phones will get the dual-clock feature.

A number of manufacturers are working on foldable phones to be released in the near future. There are rumors the first set of commercially available foldable smartphones will hit the market this year. While we wait, a Taiwanese research institute has released a video showing a working device with a foldable AMOLED display.

The display is manufactured by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan and a prototype is shown in a 72-second long video.

The device doesn’t score any point for design as this is clearly a prototype but we get to see the screen in action. ITRI says they are “rapidly approaching commercial standards” with the display.

The device when unfolded looks like a 7-inch tablet. It doesn’t fold into two equal halves and there is probably a reason for that. Rather than unfolding the device every time to check for notifications; with always-on-display, you can check new notifications in the visible part of the screen.

There are hinges similar to the one on the Lenovo Yoga Book where the device folds. The panels are said to be abrasion-resistant and fold-resistant and can be folded up to 200,000 times with a folding radius of 3mm. If the average user checks his/her device about 150 times per day, that means the panel should last for almost four years. This isn’t bad as most people change their devices after two or three years.

There have been reports that Sony is working on a phone with an OLED display for release this year. There hasn’t been any concrete evidence, just reports and hearsay. That changes with this new leak.

A recent recruitment exercise by Sony for a Display Engineer is proof that the Japanese company is working on a phone(s) with an OLED display.

One of the job descriptions mentions “Drive display/OLED integration to mobile phone products (design/verification/production)”. The list of functional competencies is also another clue. Number two on the list requires experience in mobile phone products and adds that OLED experience is a must.

The job listing is said to have first been posted in November, 2017  and updated again on 12th January, 2018.

There is still no info as to which of its phones will have an OLED display but there is a high chance it will be a flagship device. Sony’s competitors have switched to OLED for a while now but it has stuck to LCDs, now it is also making the switch.

OLED displays will likely be a theme common to all flagships this year, most especially those that will want to incorporate the under-display fingerprint scanner. The new technology only works with OLED displays.

At CES last year, Sony showcased the Bravia A1E TV, its first large screen 4K OLED display which also pumps out sounds from the screen using a technology called Acoustic Surface. This year, the A8F was the TV at CES and it comes with a more traditional design.

A new Huawei phone has been spotted on TENAA. The device whose model number is NCE-TL10 is listed as having an OLED display.

Design wise, the Huawei phone looks like the Redmi Note 3 but without the speaker grille at the back. There is a single camera, a fingerprint scanner, and Huawei and China Mobile’s logo at the back. The front sports big bezels and appears to be using on-screen buttons since there is Huawei’s branding where capacitive buttons should be.

The spec sheet says the phone has a 5-inch 720p display, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and a MicroSD card slot that accepts up to 128GB cards.

The rear camera on this new device is a 13MP sensor with LED flash, and up front there is a 5MP shooter. And just like the Redmi Note 3, it also comes with a 4000mAh battery. The processor is unspecified but is an octa-core chip clocked at 1.5GHz. The phone has dual SIM slots and has Android 6.0 Marshmallow pre-installed.

Judging from the specs, this should be a mid-range device. The fact that it is a 5-inch OLED display with a 720p resolution hints at the screen coming from a domestic supplier. A 1080p screen will surely be better appreciated but this should be quite sufficient. There is also a possibility that there is an error on TENAA’s website, however we will have to wait till it launches to confirm that the resolution is indeed 720p.

The iPhone 8 is the name given to the special edition iPhone we are getting this year to mark the 10 year anniversary of the phone. There have been rumors going round that the phone will be the first to sport an OLED display. However, things just got more exciting bout the display.

According to KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 8’s 5.8-inch display which is said to take up most of the front of the device will have the lower part reserved for a “function area”. This function area is presumed to house unknown virtual keys.

Android devices usually have on-screen navigation buttons or capacitive keys. Some even have both and might even have a physical home button too. Apple is said to be ditching the home button this year which also doubles as the Touch ID scanner.

The rumor is that the function area will be similar to the touch bar in the new MacBook Pro with one of the virtual buttons serving as a home button and the others possibly changing according to the app in use or being preset by the user.

So what happens to Touch ID? Previous leaks had said Apple will use an under-glass fingerprint scanner but Kuo believes that it will be replaced by another form of biometric security system such as an iris scanner.

Adding this new detail of the iPhone 8 having a function area similar to the touch bar; an iris scanner, wireless charging, and an OLED display and you should have a rough estimate of the price. According to Mr. Kuo, the iPhone 8 will start at $1000 (¥6859). Expensive right? Yes, typical Apple. But even with the high price, he believes that 60% of Apple’s 100 million iPhone units target set by apple will be made up of the iPhone 8.

Xiaomi’s first phone for the year is the Redmi Note 4X but the Xiaomi Mi 6 is actually the one fans are looking forward to. Rumors have been flying round as to what features the Mi 6 will have and which ones it won’t.

One feature most people are eager to know about is the display of the Mi 6. Last year there were speculations that the phone will look like a smaller version of the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 which we all know has a dual-curved AMOLED display. Today, Weibo user @Mocha Socialist Workers has disproved the statement.

According to his post on the micro-blogging site, the Xiaomi Mi 6 will have a flat 5.2-inch 1080p TFT LCD display and not an OLED display with dual-curved edges.

Now we will advise not to rush and swallow this statement as Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed the display type of the Mi 6. The Xiaomi Mi 6 might have a flat IPS display but there is no assurance that the “Mi 6 Pro” or “Mi 6 Plus” won’t have an OLED display that is curved.

Judging from what Xiaomi did with the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus, and the differences between the two phones and even differences between storage variants of each of the phones, You will understand why we are not quick to dismiss earlier reports.

@Mocha Socialist Workers doesn’t stop there. He also clears the air on the rumor that the Xiaomi Mi 6 will feature a Pinecone processor. His post says the Mi 6 will indeed feature a Snapdragon 835 chip.

There is indeed mention of a higher-end Pinecone chip (Pinecone V970) built on the 10nm node. The chip is said to be made up of  8 cores (4x A73 cores clocked at 2.7GHz and 4x A53 cores clocked at 2.0GHz) and sports a Mali-G71MP12 GPU clocked at 900MHz. Sounds powerful but it won’t be making it into the Mi 6 but might be used in the Xiaomi Mi 6s or Mi Note 3.

Sources say the news that Samsung is taking all the available Snapdragon 835 chips is greatly exaggerated. Samsung is only getting priority as the top Android manufacturer but other early manufacturers like Xiaomi will also get their supply of the chips.

It’s no news that this year marks 10 years since the first iPhone was released. To celebrate the event, rumor has it that Apple will launch an anniversary edition called the iPhone X which will have an OLED display.

An analyst at Cowen & Company, Timothy Arcuri says the decision to use an OLED display will add about $50 million to the company’s cost for the second quarter. This will in turn reduce profit margins.

Sources say that Apple has an agreement with Samsung to be the sole supplier for the 5.8-inch OLED display in the iPhone X. The outcome of that partnership has thrown a spanner in the works of other manufacturers like Huawei, Vivo and OPPO who wish to purchase OLED displays from Samsung. This has led them to form a partnership that will invest in a smaller company that manufactures OLED screens.

Timothy Acuri also provided hints of what to expect next week when Apple announces its shipments for Q4 2016. According to him, he predicts a total shipment of about 76 million units which is not much different from that of the previous year. Revenue may however be higher due to the large share of the costlier iPhone 7 Plus which he estimates to have shipped 23.5 million units as against the iPhone 7′ 35 million units. Predictions for other products such as the iPhone SE, iPads and Apple watches are 8 million, 13.5 million and 5.4 million units respectively.

For Q2 2017, Mr Acuri predicts iPhone sales entering 50 million units, 10 million iPads, and 5.4 million Apple Watches.

Android Wear 2.0 is coming very soon and if you are eager to get your hands on a watch sporting the new OS, you should look no farther than at the LG Watch Sport and Watch Style smartwatches.

Images of the watches were leaked recently but they were blurry and might have made it difficult to appreciate their beauty. Yesterday, Evan Blass (@evleaks) posted a new set of pictures of the Watch Style that are way clearer and show more  details.

The Watch Style is the smaller of the two and has a 1.2-inch OLED display with a 360 x 360 resolution. Unlike the Watch Sport which has two physical buttons and a digital crown button, the LG Watch Style has only the latter. The pictures show the watch in two color variants: a Silver version with khaki-colored straps and a Rose Gold version with cream-colored straps.

LG’s Watch Style has an Ingress Protection (IP) rating of 67. So apart from being dust proof, you can also immerse it in water with a depth of between 15cm and 1 meter for 30 minutes. The Watch Style is said to have 512MB RAM, 4GB ROM, and a 240mAh battery.

The LG Watch Sport and Watch Style are made in conjunction with Google and have a deeper integration with Google Assistant. Both watches will launch on February 9 when Google unveils Android Wear 2.0 and will be available for purchase the next day. There is no news yet on how much each of LG’s watches will cost.

LG is taking television to the next level by bringing in a technology we ordinarily would have thought is for the future. As they say, the future is now, and the Korean tech giant is proving that with the unveiling of its latest Smart OLED TV dubbed LG W7 “wallpaper” OLED television at CES 2017.

Yes, the new LG television is as thin as a wallpaper, literally! It has a thickness of just 2.57mm on one of its model which is 65-inch in size. The other models comes in 77 inches in size. Despite the thin build, the W7 is a full 4K HDR TV with no backlight but with the latest high-end picture quality.

Another awesome feature of the LG W7 OLED TV is that it can be attached directly to a wall using magnetic brackets, thus no traditional wall mount is needed. The SmartTV also comes with a huge companion sound bar that is attached with a thin-but-wide 82-inch ribbon cable. The sound bar sits behind the TV screen and it features Dolby Atmos sound. At the back of the sound bar, lies all the HDMI ports and connectivity ports for the W7. The LG W7 OLED TV uses a modular design which means the motherboard is positioned separate from the panel, a design which made the thin build possible.

The LG W7 OLED TV isn’t just a demo or a concept on display, but is a product which is set to hit the market later this year. LG is yet to announce the price tag, though, but we don’t expect it to come cheap.

We reported a few weeks ago that one of the next iPhone 8 models was going to feature an OLED display. It seems it has been confirmed as a recent agreement between Apple and Samsung for the supply of OLED displays is going to affect other phone manufacturers who look to Samsung for their OLED screens.

Even though Samsung and Apple usual drag each other to court, they are still business partners. The Korean giant has supplied Apple with the chips for its phones, save for the A10 which is present in the iPhone 7. Since Apple is going OLED next year, its looking at Samsung who is sort of the king when it comes to OLED displays to make the supply.

It is reported that the agreement will see Samsung supply Apple with 100 million panels. This huge demand will leave next to nothing for other companies who need OLED displays such as Vivo who’s recently announced Vivo XPlay 6 uses a Super AMOLED display.

In order to not be at the mercy of Samsung, the-top selling Chinese manufacturers are teaming up to get their OLED displays from other sources.

The news is that OPPO, Vivo, and Huawei are investing in Royole Corporation which is an OLED screen manufacturer known for making the world’s thinnest flexible display back in 2014. The investment will see the company scale up its production over the next couple of years.

It is also reported that the companies are also looking at independent options. While there is still only one iPhone  model featuring an OLED display next year, the real effect will be felt when Apple decides to go full out with OLED displays in 2018.

Next year’s iPhone is expected to be different and there are already a bunch of rumors  circulating around on what to expect. One  that seems to be true is the use of an OLED display which will be a first for the Cupertino-based company. Today there is fresh news on the display from a supply chain analyst firm.

The firm, KGI Securities, issued a report predicting the lineup of Apple’s next phone. The report says Apple will be releasing not two, but three iPhone 8 models of which only one will sport an OLED display, the other two will use IPS LCD screens.

And if you have been expecting the dual-camera setup on the iPhone 7 Plus to be available on all models henceforth, sorry to burst your bubble as the firm says it will still be a Plus exclusive. However the unit with the OLED display will have dual rear cameras as well.

So to put in a simpler form, next year’s line-up may look like this:

1. 4.7” model with a single rear camera and a LCD screen
2. 5.5” model with dual rear cameras and a LCD screen
3. 5.5” model with dual rear cameras and an OLED screen

These three models will also be available in multiple storage variants which means the iPhone 8 with an OLED display and 256GB storage might as well be priced over a thousand dollars.

Other rumors we have heard include the return to an all glass back and the a complete ditching of the home button.

Some folks have already said this is unlike Apple and do not see the possibility of this happening. While we advice everyone to take this with a pinch of salt as there is no confirmation from Apple, we have also learnt to not be shocked at what happens henceforth, as a company can deviate from what appears to be the norm at anytime.

The recent filing as unearthed by investment firm JP Morgan shows that Apple had placed a purchase order for OLEDs with more than a year duration for the first time valued at a staggering $4 billion. According to JP Morgan, the order coincides with an “off-balance sheet obligation” for the same amount from the third quarter, which it believed to be a long-term OLED obligation to Samsung for the future iPhone.

It is widely rumored that Apple’s next iPhone 8 billed for next Fall could use OLED displays on one of its versions. This obviously is a shift from the LCD displays currently being used on Apple iPhones, although the company uses OLED panels in other products including Apple Watch and, most recently, the 2016 MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar. The OLED panels could be supplied by Samsung which is the main supplier of the technology, but other firms like LG, Sharp and even Japan Displays (JDI) which supplies the current LCDs, are also tipped  as potential suppliers.

Xiaomi unveiled the latest version of its Air Purifier machine a few days back with an accompanying price tag of 1499 Yuan ($221). The new Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier Pro comes in as a touched-up version of the Mi Air Purifier and Air Purifier 2 which had been in the market for some time running.

The Smart gadget has got even smarter with the inclusion of an OLED display which displays some parameters about the working condition of the gadget. This ensures users don’t need to connect to the app to check how pure or impure the air around  is. The display adjusts its brightness automatically to suit the lighting condition of the surrounding, keeping it bright during the day and dimming the lights at night.

There is a cool LED ring around the display and it LED flashes different colors, depending on the nature of the air in the surrounding. The LED switches from green to orange and to red depending on how clean the air and of course red indicates danger, while the green should be the safety mark.

The Air Purifier Pro can still pair with your smartphones, though, via the Mi Home app so you have an alternative means of checking the air quality and other relevant data via your smartphone.

Apart from the display, the Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier Pro features a redesigned air flow path and pressure system. There is an improvement in the device’s Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) value from 406m³/h on the previous versions to 500m³/h. The new Air Purifier Pro is also capable of covering an indoor area of 60 square meters, up from a working area of 48 square meters on previous Mi Air Purifiers. Xiaomi says there is a high precision laser sensor built into the device that can accurately detect particles of up to 0.3μm in diameter.

The Air Purifier features a more refined filter that can pick up particles like allergens, animal fur, formaldehyde, dust, pollen and cigarette smoke from the air.

Xiaomi just unveiled a new air purifier today called the Mi Air Purifier Pro. Fixing the complaint of a lack of a display and throwing in some new improvements.

Xiaomi’s previous air purifiers lack a screen, so owners had to open the app to check air quality and other details. The Mi Air Purifier Pro changes that. The display will provide real-time air quality and working conditions. It also has automatic brightness, allowing you to see the display clearly during the day and turning it down when it’s dark so it doesn’t hurt your eyes.

The edge of the display has a LED ring around it that changes colour based on the air quality. It will switch from green to orange and to red depending on how clean the air around the surrounding area is.

The air purifier also comes with a redesigned air flow path and pressure system. It has a Clean Air Delivery Rate value of 500m³/h  and now covers an indoor area of 60 square meters which is an improvement from previous ones which had a CADR value of 406m³/h and a working area of 48 square meters. Rumours for the next iPhone started surfacing even before the iPhone 7 was officially released. Now that there’s nothing in its way, we should expect more details of Apple’s next phone (if there is no SE 2nd Gen or so), like this one from Japanese media, Nikkei, which is about the iPhone 8 Plus.

A few days ago it was revealed that there will be 3 variants of the iPhone 8:  a 4.7” variant, another with a 5” display and the third one will have a 5.5” screen size. The 5.5” version is assumed to be the iPhone 8 Plus, and Nikkei says it will feature a curved OLED display which will be manufactured in the US.

This is a first for Apple if it turns out to be true but it is not surprising either, seeing as next year will be the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, we expect something different. We already know what they did to mark the 25th anniversary of the first Mac laptop. But let’s hope it doesn’t share its high price tag.

Not long after releasing the Huawei Nova in China, as well as launching the dual-camera packing Honor 6X and just fresh out of the unveiling of the HiSilicon Kirin 960 chipset, Huawei is set to release another smartphone but this time a budget device. What was likely the Huawei Enjoy 6 was spotted on TENAA a couple of months back revealing some of its specs and now perhaps the device will be hitting the market come October 27.

According to a poster spotted on Huawei fan club’s Weibo page, Huawei would hold a conference on October 27 and to that end the Huawei fan club was recruiting volunteers for the conference. Huawei is yet to officially reveal an October 27 conference but the poster also teased the device coming on October 27 as one for the youth with a stylish appearance, and gave the idea of a durable battery. The device is also touted on the poster as coming with cutting-edge technology.

Words have it that the device expected on that day is likely the Huawei Enjoy 6 which is an upgrade of last year’s Enjoy 5S. Huawei has been silent about the device since it was sighted on TENAA a few months back.

According to the TENAA record, the Enjoy 6 would sport a 5-inch 720p OLED display and would be powered by a 1.5GHz Octa-core processor. The device also packs a 3GB RAM and 16GB internal storage space under its hood which may likely be expandable. On the camera aspect, a listing of 13MP rear camera unit and 5MP front facing camera was recorded. The device is also shown to run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system out-of-the-box.

No further details about the smartphone is known at the moment but the specs listed shows we should be expecting a budget price tag on the smartphone whenever it goes official. This could be Huawei’s answer to the low-end segment dominated by Xiaomi’s Redmi and Meizu’s Blue Charm phones.

We’ll have to wait till the device is unveiled on October 27 to know the price.

After months of rumors and leaks, Xiaomi has officially released the Mi Band 2 wearable, which will succeed the highly popular Mi Band 1S released last year. The new upgrade is important because, for the first time, Xiaomi’s Mi Band series comes with a display on board. It will be a custom OLED display which can display a lot more information than the previous generations which had to rely on the connected smartphone app for these details. So, you can check the heart rate, time, distance, calories, power left etc directly on the screen.

Internally, there are a few upgrades as well. The Mi Band 2 with OLED display comes with a new hardware platform that supports  new sports pedometer algorithm which can effectively understand whether you are walking or sitting idle. So, the accuracy of counting steps should be improved on the new model. Further, the band comes with support for calls, text messages, alarms, 7 different kinds of reminders, sedentary alerts and all these details can be displayed on the screen on top. Also, the company is said to have improved the sleep quality tracking on the new device.

The Mi Band 2 comes with a new strap made out of skin friendly material. Also, given that it now sports a screen, the company increased the battery capacity inside by 55 percent, which means you can still use the wearable up to 20 days on a single charge. Its IP67 certified as well.

In case you are wondering, the pricing is still pretty cheap! The Mi Band 2 with OLED display will retail for 149 Yuan which comes to just $22.65. The band goes on sale on June 7 from Mi.com, JD.com, Lynx and even Suning. Third party retailers should soon pick up the device, so watch out for their listings online.
