<p><a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> is reportedly reconsidering its plans on the use of an OLED display for its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/04/11/apple-macbook-air-15-inch-model-launch-soon/">MacBook</a> PCs. Recent sales numbers indicate that the MacBook has been on a decline and Apple could pull the plug on its planned upgrade to OLED for the MacBook.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="738" height="561" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/macbook.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-536885" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/macbook.jpg 738w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/macbook-300x228.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/macbook-696x529.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/macbook-553x420.jpg 553w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/macbook-80x60.jpg 80w" sizes="(max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px" /></figure></div>

<p>There had been plans by Apple to deploy Samsung’s 8th-gen OLED panel on MacBooks as early as 2024. Apple will now shift the implementation date for the deployment of OLED up to 2027. The news will have important ramifications in the Korean market, as forecasts have been reviewed downwards. The Cupertino-based company is a heavy hitter and its decision could affect the OLED panel market expectations in Korea. Apple is believed to be however close to releasing an OLE panel iPad Pro in 2024. The iPad Pro will use LG-Samsung’s 6th-gen OLED technology.</p>

<p>The MacBook shipments have declined by up to 50% in the last two quarters. It is unclear whether Apple’s decision to halt the OLED upgrade is not unconnected with the slump in MacBook shipments. It is also not clear how the decision will also revive sagging MacBook sales. Unlike iPhones, Apple does not enjoy the same brand loyalty for its MacBook lineup. Apple had planned to use dual-stack OLED panels with excellent properties for its infotainment systems.</p>

<p>The dual-stack OLED screens have a longer life cycle and are brighter. The panel was expected to take care of the wrinkling in Samsung’s flexible OLED panels for larger scenarios. This resulted in a hybrid solution but Samsung has also paused its plans for the OLED panel.</p>

<p>Smartphones, computers, and televisions all share one common feature: they have a screen, and user interaction occurs through this display. Therefore, the panel technology used in your device is quite important. Undoubtedly, one of the best panel technologies available today is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OLED</a>. Thin, efficient, and highly advanced, this technology is typically used in top-of-the-line premium devices. However, it seems that this is not the only benefit of OLEDs. Scientists in Australia claim that the OLEDs in our phones and TVs could one day be used as portable quantum sensors to image magnetic fields. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>Smartphone and TV Screens Become Magnetic Field Mappers with OLED Technology</strong></h2>

<p>I am sure that many of you have used <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OLED</a> technology in one way or another at some point in your life. As these panel types become increasingly <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/01/03/samsung-showcases-flexible-oled-technology-with-flex-hybrid-at-ces-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">affordable and widespread</a>, researchers have created a device structure that allows for measuring magnetic fields both electrically and optically without the need for lasers. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="682" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/oled-technology-transforms-phones-tv-portable-quantum-sensors-1-1024x682.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-534052" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/oled-technology-transforms-phones-tv-portable-quantum-sensors-1-1024x682.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/oled-technology-transforms-phones-tv-portable-quantum-sensors-1-300x200.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/oled-technology-transforms-phones-tv-portable-quantum-sensors-1-768x512.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/oled-technology-transforms-phones-tv-portable-quantum-sensors-1-696x464.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/oled-technology-transforms-phones-tv-portable-quantum-sensors-1-1068x712.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/oled-technology-transforms-phones-tv-portable-quantum-sensors-1-630x420.png 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/oled-technology-transforms-phones-tv-portable-quantum-sensors-1.png 1379w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Rugang Geng, the lead author of the study, explains that incorporating a small piece of microwave electronics with OLEDs enables them to function not only as displays and light sources but also as quantum sensors and magnetic field imagers. Geng&#8217;s statement on the subject is as follows:</p>

<p>“If this technology is properly developed, people could simply use their smartphones to map the magnetic fields around them, for example, to spot defects in diamonds or jewelry. This also has applications in industry, such as finding defects in construction materials or as a biomedical sensor.”</p>

<p>This study showcases the potential of a small-scale OLED-based magnetic field sensor and a new approach to magnetic field mapping using a technology that is both commercially viable and easy to manufacture.</p>

The research analytics based firm added that major smartphone makers like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Apple</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung</a>&#8216;s wider adoption of the AMOLED and OLED display technology is one of the primary reasons for the jump in market share of the OLED equipped devices.</p>
<p>Although, the display driver IC supply for OLED panels is currently unable to keep up with the high demand at the moment. The report added that these chipsets are relatively larger than other chips, so fewer numbers are able to be made per wafer. Most display drivers use 40 nanometer to 28 nanometer processes for the IC. As of right now, only a few foundries like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tsmc/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">TSMC</a> (<span class="ILfuVd c3biWd"><span class="hgKElc">Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited</span></span>), Samsung Electronics, UMC, and GlobalFoundries can manufacture display driver ICs for OLEDs.</p>

<p>However, out of these chip making giants, only TSMC, Samsung, and UMC are the ones who were able to secure sufficient wafers to manufacture the display drivers. While other foundries are currently working on developing necessary process technology, these have have to finalize to begin mass production. Another notable factor is that different panel makers require different specifications for their display driver ICs.</p>

This drove sales to an impressive 156% from the previous levels in Q1, 2020.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/LG-OLED-Lineup-600x337.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-371825" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/LG-OLED-Lineup-600x337.jpg?x44794" alt="LG OLED TV" width="600" height="337" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/LG-OLED-Lineup-600x337.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/LG-OLED-Lineup-600x337-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The mid-sized and large-sized OLED panels are the panels used for TVs, monitors, notebooks, and tablets. The 10-inch panel is the lowest within this set. According to the UBI research, sales from the segment accounted for about $1.45 billion, which is 17% better than Q4 of 2020, but year on year, this was about 156% higher than last year’s corresponding sales.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/oled.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-393364" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/oled.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="600" height="301" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/oled.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/oled-300x151.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>The notebook and TV OLED panels contributed significantly to the figure, as TV OLED panel shipments were about 1.6 million units in the three months ending March 31, 2021. The corresponding Notebook OLED panel shipment was about 1.1 million units. With these numbers, TVs accounted for about 82% of the total sales.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/oled-2.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-393365" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/oled-2.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="600" height="346" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/oled-2.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/oled-2-300x173.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>OLED panels smaller than 10 inches also experienced a surge in their shipments out of South Korea during the first quarter. About 140 million units were shipped within the quarter, showing a 32.4% growth, although there was a marked decline from the previous quarter. These are the panels that are deployed to smartphones, smartwatches, and other smaller devices. The research firm places Samsung as a leading supplier of OLED panels, through its display arm, Samsung Display. Samsung accounts for 79% of small panel shipments while LG accounts for 11%.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/oled-3.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-393366" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/oled-3.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="600" height="351" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/oled-3.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/oled-3-300x176.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>We note that both of the Display arms of <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/lg">LG</a> are powerful global players. Both companies continue to chart the way in terms of innovative displays across all the range of OLED panels. Samsung Display recently gave a view of its unfolding foldable display models.</p>

<p>The report adds that about 57 smartphones have been launched in China in the first quarter of this year that uses OLED screen panel. This is double the models launched in the same duration last year.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-371052 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/OPPO-Reno5-Pro-Review-12.jpg?x44794" alt="OPPO Reno5 Pro featured AMOLED ColorOS Review 12" width="2048" height="1365" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/OPPO-Reno5-Pro-Review-12.jpg 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/OPPO-Reno5-Pro-Review-12-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/OPPO-Reno5-Pro-Review-12-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/OPPO-Reno5-Pro-Review-12-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/OPPO-Reno5-Pro-Review-12-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/OPPO-Reno5-Pro-Review-12-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/OPPO-Reno5-Pro-Review-12-630x420.jpg 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/OPPO-Reno5-Pro-Review-12-1920x1280.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px" /></p>
<p>The UBI Research <a href="http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=2877">report adds</a> that companies like OPPO, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/vivo">Vivo</a>, and Xiaomi are launching new smartphones with OLED panels to fill the gap left by the Chinese giant Huawei because of the sanctions from the United States.</p>
<p>With the uptick in the number of such devices, there&#8217;s an increase in the sales for the Chinese panel makers. It adds that the smartphone OLED sales have reached $990 million in the first quarter of this year, representing an increase of 38.3 percent YoY.</p>
<p>The growth is attributed to Chinese panel makers manufacturing high-resolution <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oled">OLED panels</a>, resulting in increased unit prices. However, the report notes that the Chinese panel makers&#8217; use of organic material didn&#8217;t increase much. Last year, around 13.8 metric tonnes of organic light-emitting material were used.</p>
<p>Now, more and more China-based smartphone manufacturers are launching smartphones in the mid-to-high-end segment. To meet the demand, the Chinese panel makers are also developing their own foldable OLED panels.</p>

That tradition was abandoned with the announcement of the iPhone X which features an OLED display. The LCD panels used on previous iPhones, including the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus is supplied by Japan Display Inc (JDI) but with a shift to OLED on the bezel-less iPhone X, Samsung became the supplier of the display panels used. A recent report carried by the Wall Street Journal shows that Samsung Display, a subsidiary of the conglomerate, earns around $110 for each iPhone X unit sold. With an estimated gross sale of  130 million units of iPhone X until the summer of 2019, the Korean tech giant is said to potentially <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/10/03/samsung-make-huge-revenue-iphone-x-flagship-phone/">earn more from the Apple flagship than from its own flagships</a>. Counterpoint Market Research estimates that Sammy could make up to $14.3 billion from iPhone X sales in the first 20 months of sales alone.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/iPhone-X-Profile-Page.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-149096" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/iPhone-X-Profile-Page.jpg?x44794" alt="iPhone X Profile Page" width="469" height="469" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/iPhone-X-Profile-Page.jpg 550w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/iPhone-X-Profile-Page-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/iPhone-X-Profile-Page-300x300.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 469px) 100vw, 469px" /></a></p>
<p>Apple happens to be JDI&#8217;s largest cash cow, especially in an era when LCD displays are giving way to OLED on most flagships. Thus, JDI is reportedly looking to secure a $900 million investment for a new method for producing OLED which perhaps will be faster and more efficient. In an era where the market demand for OLED screens is continuing to skyrocket, this might be the right move to make in order for the company to maintain its profitability. According to a report on Reuters, JDI&#8217;s affiliate JOLED has already approached a number of investors in a bid to raise $900 million to develop new technology for OLED mass-production. Further details are still sketchy as at this moment.</p>

<div id="native-ad-b-1507181373885" class="tpd-box">Apart from Japan Display, LG is also mapping out a similar strategy to manufacture smaller -sized OLED panels. Presently, Samsung seems to enjoy a near monopoly in the aspect of small- and mid-sized OLED panels right now. Samsung Displays supplies OLEDs for its Galaxy models as well as its LED TVs. The company also suppliers the panels to other companies, of which Apple recently joined its client base. Mass producing OLED panels comes with its high costs, especially at the initial stage. Initial costs are said to be high to implement the necessary technologies for high yield rates and colour-accurate panels but demand for OLED is expected to continue to rise right through to the near future. It may take a couple of years, and huge investments for JDI or LG to catch up with Samsung. But if Japan Display succeeds eventually, it may not be difficult snatching Apple from Samsung considering their fierce rivalry.</div>
