Acer has announced three new large-screen tablets aimed at users looking for productivity, entertainment, and everyday computing on bigger displays. The new lineup includes the Iconia Duo S14, Iconia Duo S12, and Iconia Duo D12, offering a range of specifications across different price segments.

The new models feature display sizes of up to 14.2 inches, MediaTek processors ranging from the Helio G99 to the Dimensity 8300, large batteries, and support for accessories such as active styluses. With the latest launch, Acer is targeting users who want laptop-like screen sizes without sacrificing portability.

Acer Iconia Duo S14: The Flagship Model

Leading the lineup is the Acer Iconia Duo S14, which comes with a large 14.2-inch OLED display featuring a 2880 × 1840 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The panel covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, offers a 3:2 aspect ratio, and reaches up to 400 nits of brightness.

The tablet is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8300 processor and is available with up to 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage. Acer has equipped it with a 10,000mAh battery, making it the largest battery in the series.

For multimedia and productivity, the S14 includes four speakers, Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, dual USB-C ports, a microSD card slot, and optional active stylus support. Camera duties are handled by a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front-facing camera.

Acer Iconia Duo S12: Premium Features in a Smaller Package

The Iconia Duo S12 brings many of the premium features of the S14 into a more compact form factor. It features a 12.2-inch OLED display with a 2800 × 1840 resolution, full DCI-P3 color coverage, and up to 600 nits brightness.

Under the hood is the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 processor paired with up to 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. The tablet houses an 8,000mAh battery and retains the same 13MP rear and 8MP front camera combination found on the S14.

Other features include Wi-Fi 6, dual speakers, USB-C connectivity, microSD expansion, and optional active stylus support.

Acer Iconia Duo D12: Affordable Option for Everyday Use

For buyers looking for a more affordable tablet, Acer has introduced the Iconia Duo D12. The device features a 12.2-inch display with a 2400 × 1600 resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate.

Power comes from the MediaTek Helio G99 processor, accompanied by up to 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage. Users can further expand storage through a microSD card slot.

The tablet packs an 8,000mAh battery and includes an 8MP rear camera alongside a 5MP front-facing camera. Connectivity features include Wi-Fi 6, USB-C, and dual speakers.

While all three models share large displays and modern connectivity features, Acer has clearly positioned them for different audiences.

Xiaomi is rumored to be working on its next generation of tablets called the Xiaomi Pad 7 series. The launch is rumored to take place sometime in October, however, many details about these tablets have already leaked. A fresh leak from tipster DCS (Digital Chat Station) has disclosed Xiaomi’s plans for an OLED tablet.

In a recent Weibo post, DCS disclosed details about three tablets in the Pad 7 series. As per the tipster, Xiaomi will be launching two tablets equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 leading version processors. These tablets will use an LCD display, and will measure between 11-inches and 12-inches.

The third tablet in the lineup will use an 11-inch OLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, it will feature a “Snapdragon 8 series sub-flagship processor,” which could either be a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. The highest configuration will go up to 24GB of RAM and the tablets will come with 120W fast charging. Design-wise, the tablets will be quite similar to the Xiaomi Pad 6 series.

Previous leaks have claimed that the battery will be of 10,000mAh capacity, and the tablets will come with HyperOS 2.0 pre-loaded. These tablets could launch with the Xiaomi 15 series sometime in October.

There are two types of display panels on electronic gadgets – OLED and LCDs. However, OLED panels have failed to make their appearance on big screens even after dominating smartphones. Samsung has been one of the early adopters of OLED panels in its tablets. However, other OEMs have failed to adopt the same. As per Counterpoint Research, the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed the OLED tablet’s popularity. The trend is said to continue and a jump in penetration is expected in 2024. 

Samsung already uses OLED display panels on its Tab S series. Last year, tablets launched with OLED displays include ASUS VivoBook 13 Slate, Huawei MatePad Pro 11, and Lenovo Tab P11 Pro Gen 2. 

There is a big difference between LCD and OLED displays. The former uses LED backlight for illumination whereas the latter provides pixel illumination to offer better colour contrasts and viewing angles. OLED panels are expensive as well as difficult to manufacture. However, they are also reliable as burn-in and pixel wear are more prevalent in LCDs. Falling manufacturing costs and the introduction of new technologies are expected to resolve the issues plaguing OLED panels. 

As per the Counterpoint Research data, tablets with OLED displays account for 8 percent of the global market share in Q3 2022. They are likely to grow incrementally every quarter and achieve a 15 percent share in Q2 2024. Till the third quarter of 2022, South Koren major Samsung dominates the OLED tablet market with 68 percent share. Lenovo, Huawei, Microsoft, and Asus have market shares of 19,10, 2, and 1 percent respectively. 

Counterpoint Research adds that significant developments in OLED penetration will likely remain dormant in 2023 as the cost of the display panel remains high. LG Display is increasing the capacities at its plants which is ultimately expected to reduce the per-unit price of an OLED panel. The research firm predicts that in Q2 2024, Samsung will have 40 percent market share followed by Apple having 21 percent share as the Cupertino-based tech giant is also expected to announce OLED iPads in future.
