Samsung is preparing to release the One UI 9 Watch update to older Galaxy smartwatches. The stable version debuted in July on the recently launched Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, and will start rolling out to existing models once the beta program concludes. But a few Galaxy watches won’t make the cut.

Samsung typically offers four major OS upgrades to its Galaxy smartwatches, except for the new Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, which promise an additional OS upgrade. That means the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic have already reached the end of OS update support with One UI 8 Watch.

Of course, the special editions of Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic are also ineligible for OS upgrades going forward.

Based on the update policy, here’s a list of Galaxy smartwatches that won’t be upgraded to One UI 9 Watch:

• Galaxy Watch 4
• Galaxy Watch 4 Classic
• Galaxy Watch 4 Golf Edition
• Galaxy Watch 4 Classic Thom Browne Edition

The Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic were released in 2021 with One UI Watch 3 (Wear OS 3) out of the box. Over the next four years, the device received four major OS upgrades that Samsung had promised at launch. Hence, they aren’t eligible for One UI 9 Watch and future OS updates.

Those Galaxy Watch models were offered five years of security updates, which ended in August 2026. The devices should still work just fine even though they won’t receive any software updates. However, it’s the right time to plan for an upgrade. The best options are the Galaxy Watch 9 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, offering five major OS upgrades and five years of security patches.

Samsung could begin the One UI 9 Watch beta program later this month. The company typically restricts the beta program to select newer models in two regions: Korea and the US.

The One UI 9 Watch emphasizes advanced Galaxy AI integration to deliver contextualized, tailored guidance. The Vitals Dashboard compares sleep-related signals with your personal baseline to alert you to any meaningful changes from your usual patterns. Heart Rate Health Score offers a simplified view of your cardiovascular wellness and provides personalized guidance.

The new Daily Cardio Load feature uses Galaxy AI to analyze recent activity and estimated recovery times to guide you on when to train harder or take a rest day, while Fitness Index evaluates overall physical capability and performance metrics to offer clear fitness progress reports.

With the latest One UI 9 Watch, you can activate Gemini simply by lifting your wrist to your mouth and speaking. The Wear OS widgets also receive upgrades to surface glanceable information quickly. One UI 9 Watch further optimizes app launch speed and background workout tracking.
