There are reports that OnePlus has begun a scheme to give battery replacements for some of its older models in India, at a minimal fee for labor. The smartphones that will enjoy battery replacement are the OnePlus 3, OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T, OnePlus 6, and OnePlus 6T.

The scheme is already operational, and owners of the devices can walk into any OnePlus store to request the service. However, if you don’t want to walk into a store for the battery replacement, you can book the service online instead, but in that case, you’re only getting a 50% discount.

There is no official reason given for the move but it may not be unconnected with the fact that the company’s inventory of the stated spare batteries has remained stagnant for an extended period. In addition, these batteries are rather old and it’s unlikely that there would be a spike in demand for them. OnePlus, therefore, is seeking customer goodwill and loyalty by the gesture, although several options are open for its disposal of the inventory.

It is unclear how long this promo had been and how long it will remain, although we would feel that it remains while the stock lasts. One thing is also sure, lots of OnePlus models in the category will benefit from this incentive program. It remains a secret what the quantum of devices are expected to benefit from the battery replacement program. OnePlus is also mum on the number of unused batteries in its inventory.

OnePlus recently released Android 11 beta 3 for compatible devices. The new update comes with OxygenOS 11, the new UI OnePlus will announce later this year for its phones. While the internet is divided about how they feel about the new user interface, OnePlus has revealed that some already available software features will not be coming to its older phones even though it promised they would get them.

The info was revealed to Mishaal Rahman, the Editor-in-Chief of XDA-Developers who reached out to OnePlus to ask about these promised features that are yet to arrive. Below are the said features and the reasons why they will not be coming to these phones:

RAM Boost for OnePlus 5 series

RAM Boost was announced last year. It arrived with the OnePlus 7 series with a promise to be available for the OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6T, OnePlus 5T, and OnePlus 5. The feature which learns the usage pattern of the phone owner can predict over time the apps to be launched and allow these apps to take full advantage of the RAM to improve performance.

It has been more than a year since OnePlus promised it will be available for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T. When asked why it is yet to be available, OnePlus said it will no longer be released for both phones due to a hardware compatibility issue. Yup, standard textbook excuse.

Caller Identification for OnePlus 3 series

OnePlus releases some features that are exclusive to select regions and one of them is Caller Identification which made its debut on the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T. The feature was promised to be made available for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T along with their Android Pie update but wasn’t. OnePlus says it will no longer be released for the two phones as they have reached their end of life.

DC Dimming was also included in the source post as not being available for the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T even though it was promised but users of the two phones have revealed the feature is available for them.

In related news, older phones are not the only ones that are missing out on promised updates. The OnePlus 8 is supposed to get an OTA that will bring upgrade for 5G or 4G dual SIM support. It has been five months since its release and the feature is yet to arrive. When asked, OnePlus says it will be available in Q4 2020.

OnePlus has also confirmed that one-handed mode will be made available with the stable version of OxygenOS 11 and HydrogenOS 11. It remains to be seen if all the devices that will get the new update will receive the feature.

So OnePlus 3 and 3T still likely has a year or two in terms of unofficial support.

As for the existing devices, OnePlus has already rolled out Android 10 with the October security patch to all of its 2019 models, including the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro. Only the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G model is left out of this lot since the new Android version will be rolled out to the device in Q1 2020.

It’s been a few years since both the devices have launched. The OnePlus 3/3T has received their final significant updates of Android 9.0 Pie a few days ago. Steps to Install TWRP on OnePlus 3/3T

1. Navigate to Settings > About Phone > Tap Build number 7-8 times to enable Developer Mode.
2. Now enable USB debugging, OEM unlocking and advanced reboot by heading to the Developer options.
3. Now, Connect OnePlus 3/3T with the USB cable.
4. Extract ADB and Fastboot drivers on your PC/Laptop.
5. Now, Press Shift+Right Click to open the command prompt in the extracted folder.
   
6. Once you opened Command Prompt, type the following command to check the device connectivity:

   adb devices

7. Now reboot the OnePlus 3/3T into the bootloader mode by typing the command:

   adb reboot bootloader

8. Verify the device’s connectivity once in the bootloader mode by executing:

   fastboot devices

9. To install the TWRP recovery, type the following command. (Note: Change the TWRP.img with the actual recovery filename)

   fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img

10. You have successfully installed TWRP Recovery.

The device will reboot a few times and will boot the device. You’ve successfully installed custom recovery on the OnePlus 3/3T

Steps to Root OnePlus 3/3T

To gain root access, follow the steps below carefully.

1. Boot into TWRP Recovery, if you have already unlocked the bootloader and custom recovery.
2. In TWRP go to advanced > ADB sideload > swipe to start sideload.
3. Now, execute the following command, and Super SU being the name of the zip file:

    adb sideload SuperSU.zip

4. Select Reboot System, and it’s done!

Following the above procedure, you would have successfully installed TWRP and gained Root access on OnePlus 3T device.

OnePlus is always known for its affordable yet powerful devices. OnePlus 3 and 3T also follows the same regime and carries the flagship Qualcomm chipset of that time. In today’s writeup, we will guide you to unlock the bootloader of OnePlus 3 and 3T devices.

OnePlus 3 is powered with Snapdragon 820 with 6GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. It carries a 5.5 inch HD display with 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution. The device runs on the Android 9.0 Pie and weighs at 158 grams. In optics, there’s a single 16-megapixel camera on the rear side and another 8-megapixel camera on the front for selfies. Whereas, the OnePlus 3T got an upgrade of the dual 16MP camera and a 16MP camera on the front side with a smile capture feature. There’s also an upgrade of Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset.

Rooting Process:

To root the OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 3, users have to unlock the bootloader, and then have to proceed for the installation of custom recovery and SuperSu/Magisk. Root Procedure involves these three steps:

Unlocking Bootloader: It is a lock which is applied by the OEMs to bare users from modifying the firmware or rooting the device. It is the first and foremost step to attain root access on any Android smartphone.

Custom Recovery: There are two types of recoveries – Custom and Stock. The custom recovery is flashed onto the recovery partition of the device to bring a lot of customizability rather than the stock recovery. It allows users to flash new MODs, create full backups, and perform data wipes efficiently.

Rooting: It is the final process to gain root access. The user can flash the SuperSU or Magisk to gain the root access.

This is the procedure to root every Android device. We need to follow the same method to root OnePlus devices after unlocking the bootloader. Let’s proceed with the unlocking bootloader of the OnePlus 3 and 3T.

2. Now, Turn on USB Debugging Mode – Go to Settings > Developer Options > Toggle USB Debugging Mode.
3. Enable OEM Unlock – You will find the OEM unlock in the Setting > Developer Options. 
4. Also, enable Advanced reboot by going to the Developer Options and enabling the ‘Advanced Reboot’ option.

Steps to Unlock OnePlus 3/3T bootloader

1. Boot OnePlus 3/3T into fastboot mode either by long pressing the power button and then selection the Bootloader mode, or either pressing volume up + power button after turning off the device.
2. Now, connect your device to PC via USB cable.
3. Open the command prompt in the extracted ADB and Fastboot drivers window by pressing Shift + Right Click.
   
4. Verify the device’s connection by executing the following command.:

   fastboot devices

5. Now, unlock the bootloader by typing the following command:

   fastboot oem unlock

6. You will get ‘finished’ output in the command prompt and phone will reboot.

After months of waiting, OnePlus is finally rolling out a stable Android Pie update to the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T!!! The update brings new features and updates the security patch.

The update is rolling out incrementally as OxygenOS 9.0.2 to both phones. OnePlus says a limited number of users will receive it today while a broader rollout will begin in a few days to a few weeks time. They also said VPNs won’t help you get the update faster as the OTA is not rolling out on a region bases but to limited random devices.

The Android Pie update will be the last major update for the 2016 phones. Both phones originally launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, got updated to Android Nougat, then Android Oreo, and finally, Android Pie, making it three major OS updates.

Although quite late, keeping its promise, OnePlus has now started rolling out Android 9 Pie beta update for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T smartphones. This will be the third major Android release for the OnePlus 3-series smartphones.

Launched in 2016, OnePlus 3 and 3T were launched running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow operating system out-of-the-box. In 2017, the devices received Android 7 Nougat update and further received Android Oreo update last year.

The new development comes as the China-based company has already guaranteed Android security updates for the phones till November 2019.

As the newly released update is the first beta update, you’ll need to install the Community Beta build manually by downloading the OTA ROM for the OnePlus 3 or the ROM for the OnePlus 3T. To install the update, place the downloaded file in the internal storage root folder and Open Settings -> System update -> Click top right setting icon and Choose Local update to update.

Further, the company has said that the phone’s boot loader should be locked before installing the ROM. It added that those who download the Community Beta build will get OTA update when the stable build is released. Those who are on the Open Beta will have to update the phone using the recovery, which will wipe the device’s data.

OnePlus 3 and 3T has already received two major upgrades. First, just a month after its launch Android Nougat was rolled out and later followed by Android Oreo at the end of 2017. Interestingly, it would be the third significant OS upgrade for the device.

When OnePlus announced that it would update the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T to Android Pie, it came as a big surprise. Both phones launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, got an update to Android Nougat and then Android Oreo. Most Android manufacturers only stop at two major OS updates which explains why the OnePlus 3/3T getting Pie is a big deal.

The Android Pie update may be hitting both devices soon as models running the latest version of Android have been spotted on Geekbench. The OnePlus 3 was benchmarked a few days ago (January 3) but the Android Pie-running OnePlus 3T was benchmarked on December 27.

At the moment, the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T run OxygenOS 5.0.8 which is based on Android 8.0 Oreo. OnePlus canceled the update to Android 8.1 Oreo in favor of the update to Pie. The update to Pie should also bring a new security patch when it begins to roll out.

The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T both have a 5.5 inch 1920 x 1080 display, a front-mounted fingerprint scanner, and a 16MP rear camera. Where they differ is in their processor – Snapdragon 820 in the OP3 and Snapdragon 821 in the OP3T; their front cameras – 8MP for the OP3 and 16MP on the OP3T; and their battery capacities – 3,000mAh against the OnePlus 3T’s 3,400mAh battery. The OnePlus 3T also has a variant with 128GB of storage.

A new update has begun rolling out to the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. The update which comes as OxygenOS 5.0.7 brings the latest security patch, bug fixes, and support for the new Type-C Bullets Earphones.

The update is about 1.5GB in size and is rolling out incrementally to both devices. The changelog says with the new update, owners of both phones can grab the new Bullets/Bullets 2T Type-C wired earphones and it should work for them. The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T both have audio jacks but OnePlus also support audio over USB-C.

Pete Lau, founder and CEO of OnePlus, has revealed that the new Android 9.0 Pie update for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 3 series devices will take some time to roll out.

In response to a user’s question on Weibo, Pete Lau said assured that the OnePlus 5 series and OnePlus 3 series will be upgraded to Android P, as it has been said before. He added that Engineers still need more time to come up with the update and appealed everyone to understand the situation.

Further, Pete Lau also said that the upcoming OnePlus 6T will come pre-installed with the latest Android 9.0 Pie operating system, along with the company’s own custom user interface OxygenOS on top. He also revealed that the OnePlus 6T will be launched in China on 5th November, a week after the phone’s global announcement.

The company recently updated its most recent smartphone — OnePlus 6 — with the Android Pie update. The latest update brings a brand new user interface for Android Pie, a new adoptive battery support, a new gesture-based navigation support as well as other new features and system improvements.

For the OnePlus 5, OP5T, OP3, and OP3T’s Android Pie update, we are expecting similar features, along with an improved Do Not Disturb feature, Game Mode 3.0, and the latest Android security patch. While OnePlus has not revealed the timeline, we hope the company starts rolling out the device by the end of this year.

The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T were released in 2016 – one with a Snapdragon 820 and the latter with a Snapdragon 821 processor. Technically, both phones have received two major updates – Android Nougat and Android Oreo and should receive one more year of security updates. However, in what can be said to be the biggest surprise for owners of both phones, OnePlus has announced it will update them to Android P!!!

The info was revealed on the official OnePlus forum today by the operations manager for OxygenOS. It turns out this is the big surprise hinted at last week when both devices got updated to OxygenOS 5.0.4.

That update didn’t bring Android 8.1 Oreo but came with camera improvements and July’s security patch. The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T will now join the OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T, and OnePlus 6 in receiving Android P.

The Android P update will be available on the OnePlus 6, OnePlus 5/T and OnePlus 3/3T, in this order. We will keep you all updated in the coming months

However, there is no info on when exactly the update will arrive. Might be by the end of the year or maybe even next year but nevertheless, it is still good news for owners.

In the official statement, it has been revealed that both phones won’t receive an update to Android 8.1 Oreo as resources are now directed at the Android P project.

The OnePlus 6 is the latest device from OnePlus, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it is regularly in the news and getting updates and fixes. However, OnePlus hasn’t abandoned its older devices. A new update has hit 2016’s OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T and it brings the latest security patch and some device improvements.

The update is rolling out as OxygenOS 5.0.4 and comes with July’s security patch. However, a staff member on the OnePlus forum says an error in updating a string in settings under security patch causes it to incorrectly show as June.

The update also improves the camera quality of the front camera and fixes a manual ISO setting issue associated with 3rd party camera apps. It also fixes a parallel Whatsapp crash issue and camera zoom-in issues for Snapchat.

While owners of both devices are patiently waiting for OnePlus to update the device to Android 8.1 Oreo, this update doesn’t do that. But there is good news.

Another staff on the forum has confirmed that this won’t be the last update for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. He also acknowledged that users of both phones are “eagerly waiting for some big changes” but will have to be patient. He then added that more details would be shared very soon.

The update is 95MB in size and has already started hitting some devices. If you haven’t gotten it yet, it will arrive in the next few days.

Yesterday, OnePlus released new beta builds for the OnePlus 3 (open beta 39) and OnePlus 3T (open beta 30). The open beta builds are said to be the last for both phones.

On Sunday, OnePlus released an update for the OnePlus 6. The update which comes as OxygenOS 5.1.8 is supposed to fix some system stability issues and optimize call quality. It is also supposed to fix issues with OxygenOS 5.1.6 for Indian users. Sadly, the new update comes with some serious issues.

According to some users, the OnePlus 6 is suffering from a serious battery drain. Battery life is said to have reduced by half since the update with the screen consuming more than usual. One user has also reported the device shutting down while in use with the battery still at about 50 %. Some have even complained about the camera app freezing.

Apart from the OnePlus 6, some OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T users have complained about a battery drain on their devices. The battery is said to drain in a few hours and doesn’t even give the usual battery low warning at 15%. The bug is said to be due to the most recent update.

A senior member at XDA, Charles_1 was able to get portrait mode to work on the first-gen Pixel phones, the Nexus 6P, and Nexus 5X. A few days ago, another senior member Arnova8G2 who helped port the Google camera app from the first gen Pixel to Snapdragon devices was able to bring the feature to non-Google devices.

If you own the OnePlus 3/3T (OxygenOS 5), Xiaomi Mi 5/5s (LineageOS 15), Moto G5s Plus, Galaxy S8/S8+, and Galaxy Note 8 (leaked Oreo beta ROM), you can now get portrait mode on your phone(s)……without rooting.

When it was first released, the portrait mode feature only worked with the rear camera, but an updated version has been released that also works with the front camera.

OnePlus has come across several issues related to its smartphones, starting from privacy mayhem to security loophole. Now, another issue related to the company’s devices have surfaced online. OnePlus phones are not able to stream High Definition (HD) content on platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

The streaming of media content on such platforms is limited to only standard definition (SD) resolution. This is surprising given that the phone has an HD-capable display and packs powerful hardware, which is more than enough to allow HD streaming.

This was noted in a thread on the OnePlus forums, which points to lack of support for Widevine Level 1 DRM, which many streaming service providers require for HD streaming.

The recently launched OP 5T presently supports Widevine Level 3, which only covers standard definition streams. It has been confirmed that both the OnePlus 5T and its predecessor are currently unable to stream Netflix or Amazon Prime videos higher than the SD resolution. The previous generation smartphones from the company — OnePlus 3 and 3T are also affected.

However, a spokesperson from the company has confirmed that the feature was skipped from the start on these devices. While the company didn’t mention why they skipped the feature, OnePlus says that it will soon roll out a software update which will add this functionality on the OnePlus 5 and 5T. But, there is no time-frame provided by the company regarding the availability of the update to fix this issue. Interestingly, the company has not mentioned OP 3 and the 3T in the press release.

The recently launched OP 5T smartphone comes with a 6-inch Full HD+ display and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. The configuration is more than enough to support HD streaming and the lack of support for HD streaming is an odd omission. It’s quite confusing as the Widevine website says that “Google does not assess license fees for the Widevine product”. So, the addition of this feature in the first place wouldn’t have cost anything. We just hope that OnePlus addresses this issue with the software update sooner.

About 2 weeks ago, OnePlus revealed in an AMA session that it would release Android 8.1 for all its current phones eligible for the Android Oreo update. However, it said none of the phones will get Project Treble.

This has not gone down well with fans of the brand who have now launched a petition to convince them to reconsider. Project Treble is supposed to make updates faster as it separates the Android OS framework from the vendors implementation.

While devices that come with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box must have Project Treble support, there are some which were previously on Nougat that have gotten Project Treble or that will get it, such as the first gen Pixels, the Essential Phone, Honor 9, Mate 9, and Honor 8 Pro.

If these devices can get Project Treble support, why shouldn’t the newly released OnePlus 5T or even the OnePlus 5, OnePlus 3T, and OnePlus 3 get Project Treble?

While the OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 3 won’t make it past Android Oreo, support for project treble will allow developers to create custom ROMs for them using the latest AOSP in a matter of days rather than weeks or more. That way, these phones can get longer support seeing as they will just be two years old when Android P comes out next year.

OnePlus a few days ago kept to its promise of releasing an Android 8.0 Oreo update for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. OnePlus had already said that it would be the last OS update for both devices.

However, during an AMA session on the OnePlus forums, it was revealed that both devices (along with the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T) will receive an Android 8.1 Oreo update later. At the moment, Android 8.1 is only available as a developer preview for the Pixels, Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X but will have a stable version before the end of the year.

Some of the features Android 8.1 brings includes the addition of a Bluetooth battery level icon next to the Bluetooth icon in the Quick Settings Panel. It also brings the ability to disable the “App is running in the background” notification, and limits notification alert sounds to one per second.

Unfortunately there is one feature that won’t be coming to OnePlus devices and that is Project Treble. Project Treble is one of Android 8.0’s key features. What it does is to make it easier, less expensive, and faster for  manufacturers to update devices to new versions of Android.

It does this by separating the vendor implementation (device-specific, lower-level software written by silicon manufacturers) from the Android OS framework via a new vendor interface. In previous Android versions. device makers had to update most of the Android code to upgrade a device to a newer version of Android. But with project treble, the stable vendor interface provides access to the hardware-specific parts of Android, so that manufacturers can push out new Android updates by just updating the Android OS framework.

While OnePlus has already announced that Android Oreo will be the last major update for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, it will still receive security updates and possibly, bug fixes.

The update makes OnePlus the second manufacturer to release Android Oreo for its devices. The update is incremental and should start arriving on most devices in a few days.

The new Open beta builds for OP3 and OP3T contain two UI bugs. Those bugs can be seen in the above snapshot. As it can be seen, there are some blank spaces in the Quick Settings menu. Also, the “Audio output” option is missing in the leftmost snapshot. Apart from these bugs, the new beta update also includes plenty of bug fixes and customizations.

Users should be aware of the fact that these are not stable builds. Users who are not satisfied by the new Oxygen OS beta for OnePlus 3 and 3T can revert to the Open Beta N build. However, downgrading to Nougat on Open Beta requires users to follow special instructions. Doing so ca also lead to partial loss of data. OnePlus was recently in hot waters when it was found collecting personally identifiable information for analytics. Now, a new report has surfaced online which could create trouble for the company ahead of its new smartphone launch.

A Twitter user, who goes by the name “Elliot Anderson” (named after the lead character of Mr Robot TV show) has discovered that OnePlus accidentally left in place a diagnostic testing application. He further added that the application can be exploited in order to grant root access which could effectively act as a backdoor.

The mobile application in question is a system app that was made by Qualcomm and customized by OnePlus. Named as EngineerMode, the application is provided by Qualcomm to OEMs for easily testing all hardware components of the device.

Named as “EngineerMode”, the application comes pre-installed on OnePlus devices, including the OnePlus 5, 3T and 3. It is used to run system tests for GPS, vibration, screen brightness, as well as for checking root access and performing a series of automated tests.

When the twitter user decompiled the application, he found that by launching the ‘DiagEnabled’ activity found in the APK with a specified password, the device could actually be rooted. One of the system property allows the user to run ADB as root which enables the user to acquire full root access on the phone without unlocking the bootloader.

The ‘DiagEnabled’ is a Qualcomm made activity so there is a possibility that other Qualcomm devices could possibly be affected by this. To check if your device has EngineerMode installed, go to Settings -> Apps -> Menu -> Show system apps and search for “EngineerMode” in the list.

This appears to be a massive security issue as hackers may find ways to use it to gain access to OnePlus handsets. The developer has said that he plans to release an app for rooting OnePlus devices soon.

In its bid to stick to its schedule of updating its devices to Android Oreo before the end of the year, OnePlus has released an Android 8.0 open beta update for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T.

The update is beta version 25 for the OnePlus 3 and beta version 16 for the OnePlus 3T. Apart from upgrading the OS to 8.0, it also brings September’s security patch.

The change-log mentions that users will get features such as picture-in-picture mode, autofill, smart text selection, and notification dots. In addition to those is a redesigned quick settings and the ability to upload photos directly to Shot on OnePlus.

Some known issues listed are a slower fingerprint sensor, no shortcut access to Google Photos, and stability issues with NFC and Bluetooth.

Various well-companies like Google, Apple and Microsoft are known for collecting user data in order to deliver improved user experience. These companies do not collect user data without the consent of the user. In the recent past, OnePlus has been accused for manipulating benchmarks, incorrectly mounting displays, incompetency in providing adequate device support and now the company has been reportedly found guilty of collecting user data without their knowledge.

Christopher Moore, a software engineer has mentioned on his tech blog how OnePlus is collecting information from its users without their permission. Moore began monitoring the internet traffic from his OnePlus 2 using a free security tool called OWASP ZAP during the SANS Holiday Hack Challenge 2016. This tool can automatically find security problems in web applications.

Moore has found that various user information such as IMEI number, service provider names, MAC addresses, serial numbers, IMSI prefixes and things of that nature were collected by his device by open.oneplus.net, a site hosted on Amazon AWS. On investigating further, Moore found that his OnePlus 2 was also sending some other information on locks and unlocks, reboot, screen timestamps, and charging.

This can possibly help the Chinese manufacturer to release more stable builds of its OxygenOS. However, it is unethical to fetch user information without permission. Moore has also found that OnePlus Device Manager and OnePlus Device Manager Provider are the two items that are unfairly collecting user data.

OnePlus has released the following statement on the issue:

We securely transmit analytics in two different streams over HTTPS to an Amazon server. The first stream is usage analytics, which we collect in order for us to more precisely fine tune our software according to user behavior. This transmission of usage activity can be turned off by navigating to ‘Settings’ -> ‘Advanced’ -> ‘Join user experience program’. The second stream is device information, which we collect to provide better after-sales support.

The above statement suggests that OnePlus does not consider it as a major problem as it is only collecting information for user support. Also, the statement does not address privacy concerns. It appears that the Chinese manufacturer is breaking consumers trust in a bid to provide them with improved after-sales support.

Since OnePlus Device Manager and OnePlus Device Manager Provider are system services, they can be manually disabled every time after restarting the OnePlus device. However, Jakub Czekański has provided a suggestion on how to disable them permanently. OnePlus is not the only company that has been caught collecting user information. Hence, companies should be very transparent on letting it consumers know what information they are collecting from the user and the purpose behind doing so. At the end of the previous month, OnePlus had released OxygenOS 4.5.0 update for OnePlus 3 and 3T smartphones. The Chinese manufacturer has now released OxygenOS 4.5.11 update for OnePlus 5. Even though many users in Canada have received the update, there was no official announcement on its arrival. In the previous month, the company had released OxygenOS 4.5.10 to bring camera improvements and system optimizations.

The OxygenOS 4.5.11 is a big fixing update that has been released to fix some issues that OnePlus 5 users have reported since its launch. Some users had claimed that while using YouTube, the video lagged behind the audio while others had reported about poor 4G+ network strength in some areas. The update has been rolled out to resolve these issues.

Some OnePlus 5 users have complained about adaptive brightness issue. This issue has also been fixed by the new update. The OxygenOS 4.5.11 also fixes display issues of some UI elements. However, there is no precise information to know what those issues are.

The OxygenOS 4.5.11 update also brings along security patches for the September month. These patches would be able to protect OnePlus 5 from the recent Blueborne vulnerability. After installing the update, users have also noticed that the apps are launching faster than before. The update also brings the ability to customize the notification ringtone.

As mentioned above, the update is currently available in Canada and is being gradually rolled out in phases. Hence, it may take couple of weeks for all the OnePlus 5 devices to receive OxygenOS 4.5.11.

As far as Android 8.0 Oreo update is concerned, OnePlus has confirmed recently that the new firmware will be brought to OnePlus 5 before the end of this year. OnePlus 3 and 3T are the other smartphones from the company that are eligible to receive Android 8.0 Oreo upgrade. The Chinese firm is expected to begin beta testing of its Oreo update before making it widely available to its users.

OnePlus released a new OTA update for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T yesterday. The update moves the version number from 4.1.7 to 4.5.0 and brings a bunch of features which owners should find interesting.

Some of the visual features includes the new OnePlus Slate font debuted on the OnePlus 5 in addition to the Shot on OnePlus watermark when you take pictures.

OnePlus has also added the option to schedule when your phone goes into night mode just like we have on the official Twitter app. If you enjoy playing games without distractions, a Gaming Do Not Disturb mode can be found under Advanced System Settings, however calls and alarms are exempted.

Want to know how fast your network is? Then you can add that to your status bar. You will also find the new lift up display feature interesting. Lift up your phone when the screen is locked and you can see if you have any notifications. OnePlus also says that the update brings battery improvements and system stability.The update also appears to have fixed the Blueborne vulnerability.

The OTA update is less than 200MB and should reach most devices soon. However, OP3T owners can manually download the OTA from the OnePlus forum (scroll down and you will find the link) and copy it to the root folder of your device. After you do that, open System Update under settings and tap the gear icon to access the menu for local upgrade.

The Google Pixel has a fantastic camera that takes superb photos. The result of the photos is actually a joint work between the sensor and the software which does an amazing post-processing job thanks to the HDR+ feature. Much gratitude to the app developer that goes by B-S-G, as it is no longer exclusive to the Pixels. He was able to port it to other devices which can now take advantage of the HDR+ feature.

This version of the camera is a modified version of Google Camera 4.4.012.156195200 but it will work on phones powered by the Snapdragon 820, 821, and 835. These devices use Hexagon 680 ISP or above that’s why they are supported. It has been tested on the LG G6, OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T (I’ve tried it too, though selecting slow motion mode force closes the app), OnePlus 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S8.

When you take a shot with HDR+ activated, you get a notification that it is processing.

OnePlus was one of the first phone manufacturers to announce an Android O update for its devices (the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T). What it didn’t say then was that it will be the last major update for both phones. The info was revealed by the Head of Product during a Software Support Q&A on the OnePlus Forum.

This means the OnePlus 3 and 3T only gets two major updates before since they launched with Android Marshmallow. Though it does appear that both devices are only getting support for a little over a year, OnePlus says it “will continue to release security patch updates for the foreseeable future”.

During the Q&A, he also mentioned that both devices will get the OxygenOS 4.5 update at the scheduled time. Initially, the plan was to release the update along with the latest security patch level update. However, community feedback resulted in some modifications. The plan now is to release the security level patch this month and the OxygenOS 4.5 update later.

Don’t get too excited about the update as some features available on the OnePlus 5 will not make it to the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. They are Reading Mode, new off-screen gestures, and DCI-P3 screen calibration. The reason OnePlus is citing is hardware differences. The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T do not have the RGB sensor for the Reading Mode and hardware for the other two features.

It is surprising how hard it is for OnePlus to maintain software support for just 4 devices (counting the “OnePlus 6” that  will be released next year). With this attitude towards updates, the problem of Android’s fragmentation will never be solved.

In the previous month, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau had confirmed that OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T users will be getting Android 8.0 update. However, at that time, he did not mention any timeframe on the arrival of the next major OS upgrade for OnePlus 3 and 3T users. During an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session that was held earlier today on Reddit, a OnePlus employee spilled some information on when the Android O will be available for OnePlus 3 and 3T.

When one of the Redditors asked OnePlus on the availability of Android O for OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 3, a representative of the Chinese company replied that the Android O will be arriving for these phones “within this year.” The OnePlus employee did not mention anything on the release of Android O for the recently launched OnePlus 5 flagship.

The Android 8.0 was officially announced during the Google I/O 2017 event that was held in May. The company has not announced its official and at present it is in its third developer preview stage. The fourth installment of the developer preview is expected to be available in the next month. The final version of Android O is poised to arrive in August this year.

It is expected to come preinstalled on the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 smartphones. Speculations also indicate that the LG V30 that is rumored to debut in August will be the first non-Google smartphone to arrive preloaded with Android O. Hence, it can be guessed that OnePlus may make the Android O available for OnePlus 3 and 3T in the fourth quarter of this year.

Last year, the OnePlus 3T was officially launched in November 2016 and the Android Nougat upgrade was released for it by the end of December. Hence, it seems that OnePlus may not delay in releasing the Android 8.0 update for OnePlus 5. Hence, it is likely that OnePlus 5 users may get the update first and then it would be released to OnePlus 3 and 3T users. As it has been revealed recently, OnePlus 2 users will not be getting the Android O upgrade.

After all the hype building, OnePlus has finally unveiled the OnePlus 5 flagship killer. Soon after it was unveiled, a report from XDA Developers has surfaced that claims that the Chinese firm had sent manipulated review units to various publications. These units could benchmark tests to record highest scores.

In the past too, OnePlus has been accused for cheating in benchmarks. Unlike producing misleading benchmark scores on OnePlus 5, the company had previously found cheating in OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T smartphones to decrease variance and thermal throttling. At that time, the publication came to a conclusion that it was because of merging of OxygenOS and Hydrogen OS teams at OnePlus. The Chinese manufactured had released a statement confirming that such an issue will not be there in the upcoming builds of OxygenOS.

A few weeks before the official launch of OnePlus 5, the smartphone was spotted outperforming Samsung Galaxy S8 and Google Pixel XL in benchmark tests. This could be because the pre-production units were manipulated to show maximized performance. According to XDA Developers, it received a pre-production unit of OnePlus 5 about ten days before its official unveiling. It states that not only the review unit they have received but also the ones that were sent to other sites contains a cheating mechanism that makes the phone attain highest scores in benchmark apps. Hence, the publication is accusing OnePlus for misleading benchmarks data on OnePlus 5.

OnePlus 5 is powered by Snapdragon 835 chipset that includes four Kryo 280 cores running at 2.45 GHz and another four Kryo 280 cores working at 1.7 GHz. According to XDA Developers, the cheating mechanism is done by keeping the little cores running at the maximum frequency of 1.9 GHz all the time while the benchmark test is performed. This makes it possible to achieve higher scores than other flagships driven that are powered by Snapdragon 835.

When the cheating mechanism is not employed, it was found that only 24.4 percent readings had the CPU running at max processing speed of 1.9GHz. However, with cheating mechanism enabled, the OnePlus 5 could deliver highest performance in 95 percent of readings.

Hence, the publication claims that benchmark tests of OnePlus 5 on Geekbench 4, AnTuTu, Androbench, GFXBench, Quadrant, Nenamark 2 and Vellamo are all showing misleading scores because of the cheating mechanism used. Running the CPU cores at highest speed constantly can cause the device to heat up so much that it would become uncomfortable to hold it. In GFXBench test, the outer metallic cover of the OnePlus 5 reached a temperature of 50 degrees Celsius.

Here is the reply that XDA Developers received when the publication reached out to OnePlus on the issue:

 “People use benchmark apps in order to ascertain the performance of their device, and we want users to see the true performance of the OnePlus 5. Therefore, we have allowed benchmark apps to run in a state similar to daily usage, including the running of resource intensive apps and games. Additionally, when launching apps the OnePlus 5 runs at a similar state in order to increase the speed in which apps open. We are not overclocking the device, rather we are displaying the performance potential of the OnePlus 5.”

The above statement has not been well-received by online publications. When OnePlus was caught cheating in OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, the company accepted its wrongdoing. However, this time around, it seems to be defending its tactics. XDA Developers has stated that overclocking the little cores is not a precise representation of the smartphone’s daily usage.

Cheating in benchmark tests can negatively impact the sales of OnePlus 5. The OnePlus 5 is still a very powerful phone with Snapdragon 835 and 8 GB RAM. The way benchmarks run on a device is definitely not how it performs in daily usage. Hence, buyers who do not concern about benchmark tests before buying a smartphone is unlikely to face any performance related issue on the OnePlus 5.

The OnePlus 5 is already accused for its resemblance with iPhone 7 Plus and higher pricing. We will have to wait and see how it is received by the audience.

The video that has been added by OnePlus on its Twitter handle shows an eBook reader that comes with a manually adjustable setting for the screen’s color temperature. The video is about what OnePlus has refreshed on OxygenOS.

OnePlus is speculated to come with a 5.5-inch full HD display. Continuous viewing a screen that emits blue limit can not only affect the vision but also can impact the sleep by suppressing a hormone called melatonin. Hence, several smartphone OEMs are including blue light filter feature for better reading and screen viewing experience for longer durations. The feature can truly help in putting less strain while viewing the phone’s screen in the dark.

Xiaomi offers a feature called Read Mode in MIUI that turns the color of the display into a pale shade of yellow. Apple is also offering a similar feature called Night Shift in iOS. Also, there are several apps available for it on Play Store. The OnePlus 5 is confirmed to debut this feature. It seems that this feature will be also introduced on OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 3 smartphones.

Through another tweet, the company is conveying how smooth the OxygenOS experience will be on OnePlus 5. The tweet that is captioned as “software designed with style and refinement” probably refers to the latest version of OxygenOS that will be coming on OnePlus 5.

The background image in the above tweet suggests that it may carry support for UI themes. The current OnePlus UI allows users to color accents can be modified throughout the interface. The black and white portion in the image may hint to the monochrome sensor that will be present in its rear-facing dual camera system. A photo shared by OnePlus suggests that OnePlus 5 would be able to shoot photos with bokeh effect through its dual rear cameras.

Since several months, the rumor mill had been speculating on the design of the OnePlus 5 by releasing numerous leaked renders based on speculations surrounding the flagship phone. The above images clearly show that the design and placement of the dual rear camera of OnePlus 5 is very similar to iPhone 7 Plus. Even the position of the LED flash on OnePlus 5 resembles with iPhone 7 Plus. The selfie camera on both the phones also appear to be in the same position.

OnePlus had also promised on releasing Nougat update to OnePlus 2 users. Earlier this year, OnePlus 2 was spotted on Geekbench with Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS. This indicated that the company could be testing the Nougat OS before releasing it to OnePlus 2 users. However, fresh information suggests that OnePlus will not be releasing the Nougat update mainly because the handset is incapable of handling such an update. It seems that the company has fulfil its promise.

OnePlus has said to the publication that its customer support team has been informing about not issuing Nougat update for OnePlus 2 for “a little while.” The Chinese firm further said to the publication that “when we built the OnePlus 2 we didn’t have the software infrastructure team in place we do now.” With no major software update coming to OnePlus 2, it appears that it has now become a dated device.

OnePlus 2 has a 5.5-inch full HD display. It is powered by Snapdragon 810 chipset and it came in two models, namely 3 GB RAM + 16 GB storage and 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage. A 13-megapixel snapper is sitting on its back whereas the front features a 5-megapixel selfie camera. It is packed with a 3,300mAh battery. The phone came preinstalled with Android 5.1 Lollipop and after some delay, it was upgraded to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Sadly, the Nougat update is not coming its way.

This is probably a hint that it will be called Android Oreo.  By now, everyone should know that the Android versions are named after sweet treats.

Sony, Samsung, and Xiaomi have launched their Snapdragon 835 chipset driven flagship smartphones. Even HTC is slated to announce the HTC U 11 running on Snapdragon 835 on May 16. Now the rumor mill is spilling information on one of the most awaited smartphones of the year, the OnePlus 5 that is also powered by Snapdragon 835. Well-known leakster, Mocha RQ has revealed fresh information on OnePlus 5.

According to the leakster, the OnePlus 5 will be releasing at the end of June. The rumor mill has been claiming that the OnePlus 5 would be featuring a 2K display. Using 2K display on OnePlus 5 can make the phone consume more battery power. Hence, the leakster claims that the OnePlus 5 will continue to sport a 5.5-inch screen that will support full HD resolution like its predecessor, the OnePlus 3T.

The leakster claims that the OnePlus 5 would be arriving with a dual rear camera. Leaked information coming from another source on Weibo, Kumamoto Technology also states that the upcoming flagship will come with a horizontally arranged dual rear camera, even though recent rumors said that it will feature vertically arranged dual camera setup. In the previous month, leaked photos showing the leaked case of OnePlus 5 with the horizontally arranged dual rear camera were spotted. The EXIF data of the leaked camera samples that were alleged taken from OnePlus 5 also suggest that they were shot through its twin rear cameras.

Initial rumors of OnePlus 5 have revealed that the Snapdragon 835 chipset would be coupled with 8 GB of RAM. The increased cost of production of 8 GB of RAM and using it and on a large number of OnePlus 5 units would not be easy for the company. Hence, both the sources have claimed that OnePlus 5 would be arriving with 6 GB of RAM. The forthcoming OnePlus 5 flagship is pegged to come with 128 GB of native storage. Like the predecessor phone, OnePlus 5 is speculated to come with a front-facing fingerprint reader that will be probably embedded under the screen.

New leaks also suggest that the OnePlus 5 would come with a 3,600 mAh battery. The company is expected to bring 25 percent faster charging on OnePlus 5. There is still no confirmation on whether OnePlus will axe the 3.5mm audio jack on the upcoming flagship.

However, an update for HydrogenOS is bringing a new feature that isn’t yet available to OxygenOS, and that is support for aptX and aptX HD Bluetooth codecs. What is aptX and what does it do?

When you transmit audio over bluetooth, it is compressed and the audio quality is not as good as when you use a pair of wired earphones or when you stream over other wireless methods. aptX still compresses the audio but it just sounds a lot better. According to Qualcomm Global Trading Pte. Ltd., a Qualcomm subsidiary that acquired CSR, the original owner of aptX, the codec enables CD-like quality wireless audio because it solves the problem of sending the full music bandwidth over bluetooth.

The update is still limited to the beta version (HydrogenOS Beta 12) but will soon be made available via a stable update. aptX needs a special hardware for it to work in smartphones and even aptX supported headphones or speakers. The hardware is said to be present in most high-end smartphones already. aptXsupport will also be added to all smartphones and tablets running Android O.
