OnePlus has always been known for its innovative flagships right from the OnePlus 1, which all surprisingly come cheaper than their contemporaries. That was what we were expecting on the OnePlus 5 but the disappointment in the design continues to build up. The design of the OP5 is again enmeshed in controversy as a couple of leaked protective case has highlighted the similarity between the OnePlus 5 and the recently launched OPPO R11.

The images show the OPPO R11 encased inside the OnePlus 5 protective case and surprisingly, it fits perfectly. All the ports, as well as the power and volume buttons, are rightly positioned where there are cutouts. The dual rear camera and LED flash are also well suited on the casing. In addition, both devices seem to have the same size which would then mean that the OnePlus 5 will come with a 5.5-inch display size.

So, apart from looking like the iPhone 7 Plus, the OnePlus 5 also has a look-alike in the OPPO R11, Despite the similar design, though, the OP5 has a lot of features and hardware which perhaps places it above both models. The OnePlus 5 is coming with the latest power chip in town and would have a massive 8GB RAM on one of its versions. The OnePlus flagship has also been revealed to feature a super-fast UFS 2.1 flash memory.

Meanwhile, reservation for the OnePlus 5 is still going on at JD.com and presently, the figures are over 160,000 presently. The OP5 is expected to go official on the 21st of July in a news conference holding in China.

OnePlus is known to hype its products before launch and the company has managed to successfully get the attention of millions of fans worldwide for most of its recent launches. This year, OnePlus decided to show a good glimpse of the OnePlus 5 well before launch. This was actually a surprising move given that most companies try to guard the official design until the release date. But to be honest, the rumors about the OnePlus 5 were flying around like crazy in the past few days and it was probably a good move to put rest to those rumors, especially about the rear camera arrangement, by releasing an official teaser image.

But apparently it did more harm than good as seeing the dual camera arrangement similar to the iPhone 7 Plus, many fans were not happy and resorted to social media to express their disappointment over the final design. This could be seen on Twitter as well as China’s Weibo.

And when a company’s product is criticized even before it’s officially unveiled, a company like OnePlus won’t just sit back and relax. Recently, OnePlus’ Product Manager responded to a question on Zhihu (which is very similar to Quora) about the OnePlus 5′ final design. He defended the design of the phone with multiple points. Even OnePlus’ CEO Liu Zuohu forwarded the manager’s answer on his official Weibo page earlier today.

OnePlus’ manager states that one cannot judge the design and build of a smartphone just on the basis of its images. The flat images don’t do justice to the curves and handling of the phone or even the feel of the built quality. He mentioned OnePlus 3T and the criticism it received initially after images of the phone cropped up via TENAA before launch. Fans were quick to call OP3T’s design as ugly and boring. But once they saw and touched the real smartphone, they were impressed with the design.

He states that the images that you see of the OnePlus 5 right now don’t portray the quality of the phone or its workmanship. Only after you touch and play around with the phone can you differentiate the curves and the intricate design attributes from other similar looking phones.

As for the dual camera setup protruding from the overall design, he defended it by stating that it was a choice of whether to cut down the camera components (sacrificing quality) or increasing the thickness of the setup. The company decided to go with the former choice and hence the bulge. He added that initially, people called the bulge on the iPhone 7 Plus as ugly, but once they saw the phone, they started praising it.

End of the day, what he urges fans to do is play around with the OnePlus 5, feel its built quality and only then make a judgment about its design.

Well, he might be right about the built and quality of workmanship of the OnePlus 5. In fact, it may even feel a bit different than phones like OPPO R11 and the iPhone 7 Plus. But it doesn’t change the fact that the basic design (especially the way the dual cameras are arranged) is a copy of the iPhone 7 Plus.

Despite the initial impressions of the design based on the images available right now, it’s probably wise to wait for the phone to launch and see its design in reality before we start criticizing it heavily.

The OnePlus 5 has been confirmed to be the next flagship phone from OnePlus. The phone is scheduled for a summer release and one of the expected features is dual rear cameras. Design sketches of the phone released online shows we might be getting more than that.

We have not been able to confirm the authenticity of the images, so you shouldn’t swallow this hook, line, and sinker. The overall design shows the phone to have a more curved design compared to the OnePlus 3T. However, that is the least interesting part of the design.

The OnePlus 5 has dual rear cameras and…..dual front cameras. Yes, we might be getting four cameras in all. The rear cameras are stacked vertically with a dual LED flash sitting below. All three share a single housing. On the other hand, the dual front cameras are on the left side of the earpiece. The sketch doesn’t show the pixel count of the sensors.

The sketch also shows the phone will have a two piece back just like the Pixel and Pixel XL. The top part that extends just a little bit below the camera is stated to be made of ceramic with a 0.5mm thickness. There is also an alert slider on the left and probably the volume rocker below it.

The remaining part of the back is most likely metal and has an antenna line running across it.

The bottom of the phone shows the OnePlus 5 still won’t have stereo speakers since the speaker grille is on one side only. There is a USB Type-C port in the middle and a 3.5 mm audio jack on the left.

We are impressed with this new design and will really love to see the OnePlus 5 turn out like this. The two piece back already has us wondering the color combinations the phone will have. We presume the ceramic will be limited to either black or white while the metal part will have more color options.
