OnePlus Nord Watch Review: Get it Only for the Looks

OnePlus entered the wearable category in early 2021 with the launch of the OnePlus Band. The brand’s first fitness tracker was soon followed by OnePlus Watch a few months later.

It has been more than a year since their release, but they are yet to get successors. Instead, OnePlus recently released OnePlus Nord Watch. It is the first wearable product under the Nord brand.

The OnePlus Nord Watch sits between the OnePlus Band and the OnePlus Watch. It is priced at ₹4,999 in India. As of now, it is not known if and when the device will be made available in other markets.

OnePlus India loaned me a unit of the OnePlus Nord Watch to try it out. After using it for a week paired with a loaner OnePlus Nord 2T (Review), here are my thoughts on it.

Before we go through my experience with the product, I would like to say that the opinions stated here are mine alone. The brand had neither editorial input nor an early look.

OnePlus Nord Watch Review

A Rebranded Product

Before I share my actual experience with the wearable, I would like to reveal that the OnePlus Nord watch is nothing but a rebranded Haylou RS4 Plus.

The smartphone maker made little to no changes. The only difference I could find is the strap.

In fact, the companion app N Health is the same as Haylou Fun. I tore down the APKs of the two applications to find differences. The sole difference is that the original Haylou app offers support for Huawei Mobile Services (HMS), in addition to Google Mobile Services (GMS).

Haylou RS4 Plus: The Original OnePlus Nord Watch

For the uninitiated, the original OnePlus Watch was developed in-house by the brand. Whereas, the OnePlus Band is a rebranded Oppo Band (Oppo is the parent company of OnePlus).

In order to cut costs, OnePlus may have decided to go with a rebranded device for the OnePlus Nord Watch. Additionally, the original Haylou RS4 Plus is not sold in India. Hence, there’s no direct competition either.

I reached out to both OnePlus and Haylou regarding this matter. But unfortunately, neither of them got back to me as of writing this article.

Performance

The OnePlus Nord Watch is one of the smoothest smartwatches in this price segment. This is due to the fact that it runs on RTOS. It is as fast and smooth as a OnePlus smartphone.

I did not face stutter of any kind during my time with the watch. It responded to my touches as it should without any hiccups.

The chipset used in the device is a mystery but OnePlus says that it comes with 256 MB of storage. Anyway, you don’t get access to storage as it is limited to the system software.

Display

The best thing about the OnePlus Nord Watch is its display. It sports a 1.78-inch rectangular AMOLED display with a 70.7% screen-to-body ratio. The panel offers a resolution of 448 x 368 pixels, a 60Hz refresh rate, and up to 500 nits peak brightness.

The display feels premium for the asking price. It is colorful and is able to render content sharply. The 2.5D curved glass elevates the gesture experience and the lift to wake function works every time

The screen is bright enough for outdoor usage under direct sunlight. But unfortunately, you have to manually increase the brightness as there’s no ambient light sensor. Also, you are limited to 100+ default watch faces.

The absence of auto-brightness hampers the overall good display experience. This is the only letdown of the watch’s display as most users can let go of the lack of tap to wake feature and AOD (Always-on Display).

Build & Design

The design of any product is subjective. I am not a square-dial watch guy, so it took me time to get used to it.

Whereas, I am impressed with the build, which is IP68-rated for dust and water resistance. The rear side of the wearable is plastic, nonetheless, the casing is metal (zinc alloy). It comes in two colors, such as Deep Blue and Midnight Black. I have the former and both offer a glossy finish.

The build quality is better than most smartwatches in the price segment. Its universal 20 mm silicon strap with stainless steel buckle is comfortable for all-day use (even while sleeping). I had no skin irritation during my usage.

There’s only a single physical button on the right side, which seems like a crown but isn’t. It only registers press though you can spin it.

Pressing it on the watch face opens the apps view and on any other screen, it gets you back to the watch face. Unfortunately, it cannot be mapped to an action of your choice.

Fitness and Health

I am not more of a fitness guy. But still, I tried outdoor walking for the sake of testing the fitness aspect of the wearable. I also used a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 for reference.

As per Nord Watch, I walked 0.79 km with 1200 steps. Whereas, the Galaxy Watch says that I walked 0.85 km with 1172 steps and it even shows GPS data to prove it. Though the Nord Watch is capable of using GPS data from the paired smartphone, it doesn’t seem to be working as of now.

Though I don’t work out with smartwatches and fitness trackers, I do use them for sleep tracking. This feature works perfectly on the OnePlus Nord Watch. But sadly, it does not identify REM sleep currently.

Other health-related features like heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen level monitoring, and stress monitoring work well. There’s also support for menstrual cycle tracking.

The one thing that did not work well for me is idle alert. At times, the watch would notify me that I am idle even though I am moving.

Software

I have mixed feelings about the software on the OnePlus Nord Watch. OnePlus made no changes to it. It is the same as on the Haylou RS 4 Plus.

The UI doesn’t look like what you find on the brand’s smartphones. Thus, it does not feel like a OnePlus product to me. The same goes for the companion app N Health.

Though the UI is smooth across the board, the notification system is unpolished. I don’t receive notifications on time properly. For some reason, I receive notifications in bulk.

The watch can only show the recent 8 notifications from the smartphone and you cannot respond to them. There’s no support for icons for most apps, ergo it is difficult to grasp from which applications the notifications are from.

Further, you only get an option to decline calls. An option to silence should have been there. Above all, the vibration motor on the watch is not good enough to let you know of any incoming calls and notifications in the first place.

The worst thing about the software is that you cannot access quick controls from anywhere in the UI. You should be on the watch face to do it.

Since the wearable does not support auto-brightness, I frequently had to change the brightness level manually. During such instances, I had to return to the watch face from what I was doing earlier to just change the brightness.

Battery Life

The OnePlus Nord Watch is backed by a 230mAh battery. The brand claims that the device can last up to 10 days on a full charge.

I have been continuously using the wearable for 8 days now after charging it to 100%. I have enabled sleep tracking, notifications, and call alerts. It has been constantly paired with a OnePlus Nord 2T for the whole time with a couple of short-duration workouts. The battery is currently at 30%.

Therefore, if your usage is like mine, you should easily get 10 or more days of endurance out of the product. However, if you work out regularly, the battery life should be definitely less than 10 days.

Conclusion

The OnePlus Nord Watch is a good product if you consider it standalone. But when you compare it with the competition, it falls behind.

Its biggest competitor is Amazfit GTS 2 Mini New Version. This wearable is priced at ₹5,999. But it is being sold at ₹4,999 for a very long time as part of ongoing festive season sales. It was even available at ₹4,499 for some time.

The Amazfit model may not be as fancy as the OnePlus model in terms of looks, however, it offers better software, accurate fitness tracking, third-party support (watch faces & additional features), Alexa, and more.

With all that being said, a watch is something you would love to flaunt. In this regard, the OnePlus Nord Watch does better with a bigger sharper display, a better build quality, and a premium look.

Hence, I would recommend OnePlus Nord Watch to only those who want an affordable smartwatch with good looks. While others should consider the Amazfit GTS 2 Mini New Version instead.

OnePlus has quietly launched a new product in the Indian market. The new device is the Nord Watch, which is the first smartwatch from the company’s Nord series that it had been teasing for a while now.

The OnePlus Nord Watch has been launched with various notable features for its price tag, with its large 1.78 inch AMOLED display being one of the key aspect regarding the smartwatch. This panel has a standard 60Hz refresh rate and HD resolution that even offers 500 nits of peak brightness. The OnePlus Nord Watch has been confirmed to debut soon in India. The brand has been teasing its features for the last few days. However, it is yet to disclose the exact launch date.

Ahead of its release, the wearable has been leaked multiple times revealing almost everything about it. Now, the product’s retail box has leaked hinting at its price.

The images of Oneplus Nord Watch’s retail box come from Ishan Agarwal. The tipster has partnered with 91Mobiles to share them.

As per one of these pictures, the wearable will carry an MRP (Maximum Retail Price) of ₹6,999. Since products are usually not sold at MRP, the watch may cost around ₹5,000 or less.

Further, the same image also discloses the manufacturer of the OnePlus Nord Watch. The maker is Dongguan Zhengrong Electronics, which is known for producing Haylou products and some Xiaomi earphones.

According to teasers and leaks, the first Nord-branded watch will feature a square dial. It will come with a 1.78-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 368 x 448 pixels, 326 PPI, 60Hz refresh rate, and 500 nits peak brightness.

The wearable will offer Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity. It will pair with smartphones running Android and iOS via the N Health app. It will arrive with all the common features like heart-rate monitoring, blood oxygen level monitoring, sleep tracking, multiple watch faces, app notifications, IP68 rating, etc.

OnePlus recently teased its upcoming smartwatch, called the OnePlus Nord Watch. The smartwatch is rumored to debut by the end of the month. Now, the official microsite of the wearable has gone live ahead of the launch. So, let’s take a look at all of the revelations.

According to the microsite, the Nord Watch will sport a 1.78-inch AMOLED panel that supports a 60Hz refresh rate, 326PPI, 500nits peak brightness, and 368×448 resolution.

Other than that, rumors have suggested that the smartwatch will come in two color options – black and blue. It is also expected to have an IP68 level of water and dust resistance.

According to the listing, the device has the model number OPBBE221. It will rely on Bluetooth 5.2 to connect with the user’s smartphone. We already know that the Nord Watch will get a new companion app called the OnePlus N Health app. The appearance of the smartwatch on Bluetooth SIG indicates that it will launch soon in the market.

OnePlus has launched multiple products under its Nord brand this year and it appears that the company has no plans of slowing down.

Tipster Mukul Sharma has informed that the company is gearing up to launch the OnePlus Nord 3 smartphone, OnePlus Nord Watch, OnePlus Nord Band, Nord branded smart measuring scale and other Nord branded AIoT products in the coming days.

Out of these devices, we already have information on the OnePlus Nord 3 smartphone and the upcoming OnePlus Nord watch.

OnePlus Nord 3

The OnePlus Nord 3 was spotted on the BIS database a few months back. According to what we currently know, the Nord 3 may include a Dimensity 8100 chipset and a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2412 pixels. A 120Hz refresh rate is probably supported by the upcoming Nord smartphone. In contrast to most OnePlus phones currently on the market, the device is claimed to have a punch-hole camera positioned in the top-center position.

OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite 5G

For optics, it is rumored to have a 50-megapixel IMX766 primary sensor paired with an 8-megapixel camera and a 2-megapixel snapper. On the front, it will likely feature a 16-megapixel sensor for selfies and video calls. Other than that, the device is rumored to come equipped with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. As for the battery, a 4,500mAh unit with 150W fast charging is expected.

It has been more than a year since OnePlus launched its first and only smartwatch in the market dubbed the OnePlus Watch. The brand is now gearing up to launch another smartwatch soon under the Nord branding called OnePlus Nord Watch.

The device has already made an appearance on the BIS certification website hinting at its upcoming launch in the Indian market. Now, tipster Mukul Sharma has collaborated with 91mobiles to leak a total of five different renders of the upcoming OnePlus Nord Watch, so let’s take a look.

Starting off, we have a Nord Watch with a circular dial. It has two buttons on the right side and features a protective edge on the screen with dash lines indicating hours. This is believed to be the rugged variant of the OnePlus Nord Watch.

The next render also features a circular dial and two buttons on the right but lacks the protective edge around the screen and the dash lines.

The third Nord Watch looks quite similar in design to the OnePlus Watch, with the only difference being a single crown button instead of two.

Next, we see the familiar rectangular design that was leaked last month. The smartwatch has a black color crown button on the right side and it looks like it allows for easy strap switching.

Coming to the last render, it also features a rectangular design, however, the dial appears to be smaller in size and the crown button is white/silver.

The tipster also provides images of what the UI of the rectangular Nord Watches will look like.

So it appears that OnePlus has many variants of the Nord Watch planned for the future, however, it is too soon to tell how many of these will actually be made available in the market. Stay tuned for more updates on the matter.

Now, rumors are rife that the company is working on another smartwatch that will be called the OnePlus Nord Watch. Details about the watch are still short. However, a noted tipster is here with information about the OnePlus Nord Watch’s color options and features.

Popular tipster Mukul Sharma hinted in a recent tweet the upcoming OnePlus Nord Watch will come in at least two color options- Black and White. The tipster claimed that the possibility of more finishes cannot be zeroed. Sharma further added that the Nord Watch will carry fitness-centric features on a budget and will also feature a solid battery.

Recently, the smartwatch’s design got revealed via health app. As per the app screenshots, the Nord Watch will have a rectangular dial instead of the circular one used on the OnePlus Watch. The watch appears to have a metal frame with rounded corners. It is also seen to have a crown button on the side.

The Nord Watch is rumored to feature all the monitoring features like a SpO2 sensor, heart rate monitoring, and sleep tracking. Back in March 2021, OnePlus launched its first wearable dubbed the OnePlus Watch. However, the brand has not released any other wearable smart device since then.

Recent reports suggest that the company is trying its hand again at a new wearable that will be called the OnePlus Nord Watch, and the device has even made an appearance on the BIS certification database, meaning that it will launch in the Indian market.

Now, tipster Mukul Sharma has shared a new leak giving us our first look at the OnePlus Nord smartwatch.

The tipster informs that the device will feature a dedicated “N Health” app, which has revealed the first look of the smartwatch. From the screenshot, we can see that the Nord Watch has a rectangular dial instead of the circular dial featured on the OnePlus Watch.

The screenshot reveals what appears to be a metal frame with rounded corners, and a crown button which is likely there for ease of navigation with the UI.

Other than that, the screenshot also has revealed six watch faces coming for the Nord Watch. You can also see the “Custom dial” feature, which let you customize your watch face using photographs from a connected device.

The OnePlus Nord Watch’s step counting feature and its sports modes for outdoor cycling and outdoor walking are both confirmed in one of the photos. Additionally, according to the source, the OnePlus Nord Watch will have a SpO2 sensor, heart rate monitoring, and sleep tracking capabilities.

Currently, the launch date of the OnePlus Nord Watch is still under wraps but considering that it has already received the go-ahead from BIS, we can expect it to launch in India sometime in Q3 2022. As for the pricing, a previous report suggests that the Nord Watch might be launched in the segment between 5,000 INR and 8,000 INR.

The news arrives from known tipster Mukul Sharma who shared the information on Twitter. Sharma stated that the Chinese smartphone maker’s Nord Watch will likely launch sometime in the third quarter of this year. Furthermore, he stated that the new Nord Watch has also began internal testing in the country. Another notable detail that he shared is that the upcoming smartwatch was even spotted on the Indian BIS certification database as well.

In other words, this basically hints that the new wearable product will likely be launching soon in India. As of right now, the exact specifications or design of this Nord branded smartwatch is still unknown. But since the Nord series is the brand’s budget oriented lineup, it will likely be a pocket friendly wearable gadget. We can also expect it to run on a proprietary skin and not the usual WearOS. Another possibility is that the Nord Watch will sport a circular display.

But these are not the only OnePlus AIoT products coming this year as an earlier report has revealed that the OnePlus Nord smartwatch is also on the horizon.

The news arrives from a tweet from known tipster Mukul Sharma who spotted the Nord Watch moniker on the Chinese brand’s official Indian website. In other words, the company is working on a new wearable that will be under its “Nord” branding. This also implies that its launch might be just around the corner, or we might see official teasers of this product surface soon.

If this is true, then the new Nord Watch will be the first wearable product to be sold alongside Nord Buds.
