Additionally, OPPO will once again create a virtual playground where users who cannot be present in person will still be able to experience the latest tech from the company. OPPO’s INNO DAY held in December 2021 had a similar setup and people could join the event remotely using customized avatars.

Last but not least, OPPO at MWC 2022 will also be sharing its efforts in environmental protection as a corporate citizen and will delve into finer details concerning its strategy for environmental sustainability. The company in 2021 already managed to reduce 95% of plastic usage for its mobile phone packaging material.

In 2021, OPPO recorded a YoY growth of 22% and held the fourth position in the global smartphone market. More on that here.

The new 5G lab will be set up in Hyderabad, India, and arrives amid growing tensions between India and China.

With India being keen to adopt 5G networking, Oppo has decided to set up its own 5G innovations lab in the region. However, this arrives amid political frictions between India and China, which caused the latter to issue a blanket ban of several Chinese firms with links to China just before it ramps up its efforts to adopt the newer and faster bandwidth, as per an IndiaToday report. At the moment, Reliance Jio is expected to be the first local telecom operator to offer 5G services in the country, with its services launching sometime in the second half of 2021.

Furthermore, the Chinese tech giant’s new investment into the region would also boost the research and development efforts for 5G within the region. According to Tasleem Arif, Oppo India Vice President and Head for Research and Development, “This is Oppo’s first 5G lab overseas. With this lab setup, while we work towards developing core technologies for the 5G era and strengthen the overall ecosystem, we also aim to support India in its 5G journey.”

This new lab will be the second one after the company’s only other one that is located in China. Notably, Oppo also plans on installing additional functional labs, which will specialize in different categories for research and development, including camera, power, and battery, and performance for its smartphones. This new facility will bring technologies that will help the company “mark a global footprint” and help the development of products for both its international and Indian customers.

The current 5G networks are built around the existing 4G LTE infrastructure (Non-standalone networks). So your smartphones with 5G data support still use VoLTE for voice calls. However, network operators will soon start deploying SA (Standalone) network architecture for 5G networks which allows carriers and device makers to enable VoNR calls. OPPO’s official press release stated that the VoNR call made with its customized Dimensity 1000L smartphone (likely Reno3) had significantly “lower latency, improved sound quality and picture quality”. The company added that this will eventually lead to an “elevated overall experience for users”.

The 5G VoNR call was successfully carried out under a 5G SA network provided by Ericsson at its headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden. OPPO adds that “after dialing, the two phones connected almost instantly and then seamlessly switched to a high-definition video call with a single keypress”.

OPPO has become one of the first smartphone brands to successfully test VoNR services on its smartphone. With network operators all set to deploy 5G over SA architecture in the second half of 2020, VoNR should become an important feature of 5G phones in the coming years.

Just like I mentioned yesterday, the Reno series officially has one of the shortest product cycles in the market this year, with the new Reno3 models replacing Reno2 models that were announced just a few months back. The third generation Reno3 models come with 5G, a large battery with fast charging, and a quad-camera setup and most of all, a slim and relatively lightweight body.

OPPO seems to have given priority to form factor for the new Reno3 models, which is a big shift from the bulky and heavy Reno 5G and Reno2 models. Both the models are relatively lightweight, weighing only around 180 grams and featuring 8mm bodies. In fact, the Pro version, even with the curved display, is slimmer and lighter than the standard Reno3.

Let’s take a closer look at both the devices in detail.

OPPO Reno3 Pro 5G Specifications

The OPPO Reno3 Pro 5G is the star product of today’s event, powered by the Snapdragon 765G octa-core processor. It is an important phone, for OPPO as well as Qualcomm, since its the first integrated 5G SoC from the chipmaker. The Reno3 Pro comes with Smart 5G that regulates the 5G connectivity to improve battery life by up to 30 percent. The phone features two storage options: 8GB RAM and 128GB storage and 12GB RAM and 256GB storage.

OPPO has employed a unique 360° surround antenna design that ensures the Reno3 models can smartly match different antenna groups to ensure consistent data speeds. So you don’t have to worry about the smartphone death grip that comes in between you and your streaming/ gaming experience. There’s also a special 5G + Wi-Fi 5GHz dual connectivity model that combines the two networks to boost your overall network speeds. OPPO claims this mode can increase download speeds by up to 28 percent!

The display is one of the highlights of the Reno3 Pro 5G. The phone comes with a flexible AMOLED display that’s curved on the two sides, similar to the Galaxy S10. On the top-left corner of the display, you’ll find a small punch-hole camera measuring 3.92mm in diameter, making it smaller than the S10’s punch hole. The 6.5-inch curved display also supports 90Hz refresh rate, joining the likes of the OnePlus 7T Pro with such high refresh rates.

The Reno3 Pro 5G also employs a three-dimensional cooling system with a double layer graphite sheet to ensure effective heat dissipation. The phone comes with an in-screen fingerprint module that measures just 0.26mm in size, which is a significant (nearly 90%) reduction as compared to a traditional 2.6mm module. OPPO adds that the fingerprint recognition area has increased by 5mm to 54mm.

OPPO Reno3 5G Specifications

OPPO Reno3 5G will be the cheaper option in the Reno3 series, featuring the new Dimensity 1000L 5G chipset. The phone supports SA/NSA dual-mode 5G networks and comes with a 6.4-inch FHD+ waterdrop display. Note that the Reno3 features a regular flat display instead of the curved one found on the ‘Pro’ model. The phone is slightly heavier than the ‘Pro’ version at 181 gram (vs 171gm) but it’s still relatively lighter than competitors.

The OPPO Reno3 5G comes with a slightly different setup than its more expensive sibling. The phone features a 64MP primary camera with an 8MP wide-angle lens, 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP Black & White sensor. So, you don’t get optical zoom on the Reno3 as it skips the telephoto lens. There’s a 32MP front-facing shooter just like the Pro model.

Now, the company has confirmed through a post on Weibo that its first smartphone with dual-band 5G support will be launched in December this year.

The announcement from OPPO comes just after the three major network operators in China officially launched 5G services in the country and revealed their packages. OPPO says that it will launch the 5G smartphone with an aim to accelerate the adoption of 5G technology.

For those who are unaware, dual-mode 5G refers to Standalone (SA) and Non-standalone (NSA) modes. While the SA configuration relies on the 5G spectrum for data transfer and signalling without a pre-existing LTE network, an NSA configuration relies extensively on the LTE band for all communications held between servers and consecutive cellphone towers. This enhances the 5G bandwidth while utilising existing LTE networks, reducing the overall cost of operation.

Currently, there’s no official confirmation from OPPO regarding the specifications of the upcoming smartphone apart from the dual-band 5G compliance. Rumors indicate that the device will be powered by the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 7250 SoC, which is slated to be the first mid-range dual-band 5G processor in its portfolio.

It is also reported that OPPO is planning to introduce 5G variants of every flagship and mid-range smartphones in their lineup by 2020. According to Shen Jia, OPPO’s 5G expert, the Chinese tech giants will offer 5G capability to all devices priced above CNY 3,000 (~$421). The company has reportedly set aside a budget of CNY 10 billion (~$1.4 billion) for Research and Development purposes.

With Qualcomm finally introducing their first chipset with an integrated 5G modem, OPPO was quick to announce plan of launching the first smartphone with the upcoming SoC. The Snapdragon 6, 7 and 8-series is also expected to get a fresh lease of life with the addition of the 5G modem, covering the requirement for both flagship and mid-range smartphones.

The company already has the OPPO Reno 5G model that comes with this new generation network support. But it looks like this list is going to expand very soon as OPPO is looking to add 5G to most of its upper mid-range and flagship smartphones in 2020.

OPPO’s 5G expert Shen Jia revealed recently in an event that OPPO will add support for 5G on all products priced above 3000 yuan ($421). He further adds that OPPO has prepared a budget of 10 Billion yuan for R&D, of which a big chunk will be invested in the development of 5G products. The company aims to explore the true potential of 5G by combining it with next-generation technologies and applying it in areas such as 5G HD video calls, cloud gaming, super-fast 5G downloads and so on.

This is actually not very surprising. 5G is extremely important for China and it is said that over 70% of the global 5G smartphone sales will come from the Chinese market. Every major manufacturer is looking to grab a piece of this emerging technology, and OPPO most likely wouldn’t want to fall behind. Even Vivo has several 5G smartphones in the market, right from the affordable iQOO Pro 5G to the high-end NEX 3 5G.

This year they will also debut into the market of smartwatches and smart headphones.

In a recent Qualcomm China’s text interview of Oppo’s CEO Chen Mingyong, he talked about the Oppo’s 2019 plans. He added that the company is keen on bringing new powerful devices to the market. They are also looking to move into the smart home products market with the launch of smart devices for everyday use. They are working on every effort to bring 5G support to their new smartphones.

Oppo 2019 plans

Oppo Find X2 in works?

Oppo is tremendously working hard to bring various new devices into the market. In the interview, Chen Mingyong awsnered about upcoming Oppo flagships and the future of Find X device. He said that Find X is inspired by exploration and innovative technologies. It is a combination of art and technology along with the fusion of new innovative inventions. He termed Snapdragon 845 and 3D structured light technology as reasons behind such immense popularity of Find X.

He also urged that company is soon planning to come up with a Snapdragon 855 processor powered smartphone device. It is expected to make a debut before the end of 2019’s first half. Although he didn’t confirm any other spec of the device, most probably it would be named Oppo FInd X2.

Oppo 5G Plans

Terming the 5G as a groundbreaking technology, he confirmed that Oppo is continuously evolving to develop AI capabilities and 5G technology. It is a revolutionary experience which users should enjoy with much satisfaction and primitiveness. He said Oppo “will further develop AI capabilities with 5G, actively explore the application scenarios of 5G+ era”.

Speaking about 5G technology, Meng added that the new technology needs the blend of AI, AR and other technologies. Although he asserted that 5G is not just about the Internet of Things, it is an overall makeover of devices with new futuristic technologies. He said, “The 5G+ era is not just the Internet of Everything, but also the integration of all things. The deep integration of 5G with AI, AR and other technologies will lead to new hardware, new connections and new services. At the beginning of this year, OPPO officially established the emerging mobile terminal business unit to explore new entrances in the 5G+ era. Based on the user’s high frequency and cross-scenario usage, we will take the lead in targeting smart watches and smart headphones to create the next entry-level product.”

Oppo Smart devices

Oppo is also trying to enter the new spheres of the technology world. As per the Chen, Oppo is actively working on to bring different smart devices in the market. They are set to debut various new smart home devices such as smart headphones, smartwatches and others in the market.

Oppo is tremendously improving its product catalogue and this year will be significant for the Chinese company. It is actively working to bring new products and services under the single branch.

Moreover, last year in October, Oppo successfully achieved the 5G connectivity support with a customised version of Oppo R15.

Just recently, Qualcomm unveiled its next-generation Mobile Platform chipset which will be powering most of the flagships due in 2019. Apart from being a 7nm based chipset, the SDM855 has a specialty of being the first Qualcomm chipset to possess native 5G modem. In fact, major smartphone players by now should have sourced their fair share of chipsets from Qualcomm. But, OPPO strives to become the first manufacturer to bring the Snapdragon 855 powered 5G device to the market before others do so.

OPPO is very much confident about bringing their first 5G supported device. And, believes it can achieve the first 5G smartphone crown. The company itself shared the vision of OPPO to become the first in 5G smartphones through its official Weibo handle. It’s pertinent to mention here that on November 30, OPPO successfully demoed the world’s first 5G mobile phone WeChat video call. Literally conveying the firm is capable and on the verge to start their 5G smartphone business.

In the ever-advancing smartphone world, the manufacturers are obsessed to be the first while adopting new technologies. Given other dominant players such as OnePlus, Xiaomi and other Chinese firms are too in the race for becoming the first to launch a 5G mobile phone. It has to be seen how OPPO can overtake them to snatch the crown.

Yesterday, OnePlus CEO expressed its idea of launching 5G device early in 2019. He also added that they will have the first flagship smartphone to feature the Snapdragon 855. Perhaps the latest claim of OPPO ought to conflict with the announcement made by OnePlus a day ago. However, no matter whether OnePlus or OPPO come up with the first 5G device, the crown does belong to BBK Electronics, which is the parent company of both.

Well, let us wait and see how these dominant players can realize their claims and who comes out to be the real announcer of the first 5G device. What you think who will be, we’d be pleased to have your guesswork down in the comment section.

Oppo is one of the leading contributors to the 5G standards and is reportedly providing a large amount of support to ensure that the standardization work gets completed on time. The China-based company is aiming to become a leading promoter of 5G product development and commercialization.

The company had established its 5G Communication Standard team at the beginning of 2015. It is also among the fore-front members in the international standard organization 3GPP, based on the number of documents submitted by the company.

Earlier in May, the company had announced that it had successfully implemented the first 5G video call demonstration using 3D structured optical technology. The demonstration based on FPGA prototype verification platform carried out downlink 1.4Gbps and uplink 160Mbps transmission rate.

Oppo recently announced the completion of 5G signaling based on commercial mobile phones and the connection of data links, determining the basis for 5G mobile phones to achieve reliable communication functions. Recently, Oppo also announced the completion of the first 5G Internet access.

Now, Oppo has got a success in getting support for 5G connectivity. Today, Oppo Global Vice President and President of China Business Department, Brain Shen took to Weibo to announce the latest development. The new Oppo’s development of 5G compatibility has laid a foundation stone for the 5G smartphone’s commercial availability by next year.

Oppo conducted the successful test at Oppo Reasearch Institue in China. Oppo VP, Brain further detailed that Oppo customized R15 smartphone with a compatible 5G hardware. In the lab testing environment, Oppo connected it with the 5G components such as Systemboard, RF, RFFE, and antenna which led to a live 5G connectivity on the mobile device. Even a “5G” logo also appeared in the top right corner of the screen.

Oppo has already joined hands with Qualcomm under the banner of “5G Pilot” program at recent Beijing 2018 Qualcomm China Technology and Cooperation Summit. Oppo VP added that they want to be a key contributor in providing and complying with the 5G standard. in the past, they can also be seen promoting the 5G product development and commercialization. Oppo wants to become world’s first manufacturer to become the first brand to commercially launch the 5G smartphone as soon as possible.

Although, Oppo started researching and developing on the 5G technology in 2015. It catered to the overall research of 5G standard development and explored the features of 5G compatible smartphones. The claims are even verified by International Standards organization 3GPP which states that Oppo is the highest ranked company in submitting 5G related documents.

Earlier this year, Oppo also tested the first 5G video call using 3D structured light technology. It is the successful implementation of 3D vision technology that Oppo has developed. Oppo’s research center director, Henry Tang also talked about the 3D vision in his latest speech of “Ubiquitous Reality – When 5G Meets 3D Vision”.

It is a milestone and a great success for Oppo. Now, we hope Oppo to bring the 5G compatible devices earlier next year.

Are you also waiting for 5G compatible devices next year?

A lot of their smartphones in the past couple of years have been targeted to sell well, but they were not exactly the type that will make you go wow. That kind of changed this year, especially with the release of the OPPO Find X, which features a full screen display and a slide up camera housing. Another highlight tech from OPPO this year has been Super VOOC fast charging that supports up to 50W charging! Given its release on the OPPO R17 Pro, it became a lot cheaper for consumers to get this incredibly quick fast charging feature. Now, OPPO’s assistant VP, Shen Yiren reveals some key details about the company’s upcoming innovations.

Shen reveals that OPPO’s 5G development is going well and it’s likely going to be the first manufacturer to mass produce a 5G smartphone in 2019. OPPO’s R&D department has been busy in the past few years churning out tech such as triple cameras, variable aperture, AI, Face Unlock, and even Super VOOC in its 2018 smartphones. So, its quite possible that the company is nearing the release of a 5G smartphone as well. If you recall, OPPO had officially announced partnership with Qualcomm for 5G solutions earlier this year. Further, the company also setup a research institute back in March dedicated to 5G and AI. If these moves don’t convince you that OPPO can release the first 5G smartphone, then know that the company demoed the “First Live 5G 3D video call” in May this year in collaboration with Qualcomm.

OPPO has stated multiple times that its first 5G smartphone should be out by early 2019. Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo, LG, are all looking forward to release their first 5G smartphones in 2019, so it would be really interesting to see who manages to release their big guns first in the market.
