The Southeast Asian smartphone market experienced notable growth in Q3 2024, with shipments increasing by 15% year-on-year, reaching a total of 25 million units, according to a recent report by Canalys. This growth reflects the region’s recovery and increased demand across various smartphone segments. Oppo emerged as the market leader, with other prominent brands like Samsung, Transsion, Xiaomi, and vivo following closely.

Oppo’s market dominance driven by entry-level success

Oppo led the Southeast Asian smartphone market in Q3 2024, shipping 5.1 million units and capturing a 21% market share. This growth is largely attributed to the brand’s focus on affordable entry-level models, particularly the Oppo A3, which resonated well with budget-conscious consumers. Oppo’s year-on-year growth rate of 29% highlights its effective strategy in appealing to the mass market with cost-effective devices.

Samsung held the second position, with a 16% market share in shipment volume, totaling 4.1 million units. However, Samsung’s shipment value share exceeded its volume share, reaching 23%, indicating a successful high-end strategy. The focus on increasing average selling prices (ASP) over shipment volume aligns with Samsung’s approach to prioritize profitability and strengthen its premium segment in the region.

Transsion, which includes brands like TECNO, Infinix, and iTel, ranked third with a shipment volume of 4 million units and a 16% market share. While Transsion has previously grown rapidly in Southeast Asia, its rapid growth appears to be flattening as the vendor shifts its focus from expanding market share to improving profitability and shipment value in the coming quarters.

Xiaomi and Vivo round out the top five

Xiaomi placed fourth in the market with 3.9 million units shipped and a 15% market share, benefiting from the success of affordable models like the Redmi 14C and A3. With a 21% year-on-year growth rate, Xiaomi has established itself as a strong competitor in the budget segment.

Redmi 14C

vivo completed the top five, shipping 2.6 million units and securing a 10% market share. Although Vivo’s shipments did not match the growth of its competitors, its continued presence in the top five underscores its consistent demand among consumers in Southeast Asia.

In summary, the Southeast Asian smartphone market shows a strong recovery. While Oppo leads the market with entry-level models, Samsung focuses on profitability through high-end and premium strategies. Xiaomi and vivo maintain steady growth with budget-friendly offerings, demonstrating a balanced market landscape.

Oppo unveiled the Oppo A3 Pro 5G with an IP69-rated chassis in April in China. This phone is different from the A3 Pro, which recently debuted in the Indian market. Today, the brand released an official confirmation that it will unveil the Oppo A3 on July 2 in China. Ahead of the launch, the company has started receiving reservations via offline stores, its official website, and other online channels, such as JD, Tmall, Douyin, and Pinduoduo in the home market. Here’s a look at what to expect from the device.

Oppo A3 design

Oppo is highlighting the Oppo A3’s exceptional durability, emphasizing that not all flat screens are equally resistant to damage. It claims that the A3 achieves superior drop resistance through a combination of high-quality glass, robust construction, and the inherent strength of flat screens.

The brand is yet to confirm the technical details of the device. The brand has confirmed that the A3 will be available in three shades: Mountain Green, Tranquillity Black, and Aurora Purple, as shown in the images below.

Oppo A3: Distinct Design over the A3 Pro

The Chinese brand’s Oppo A3 was just recently spotted in a TENAA certification platform. This not only gave us more details regarding its specs but also showcased its front and rear design. From the back, this device looks slightly familiar to the Sony Xperia 1 V, with vertically stacked camera sensors in an oval shaped camera module.

The module houses the LED flash as well. This is distinct from the Oppo A3 Pro’s circular camera island. While it is unclear, the front seems to have curved edges and the rear has a flat back. We don’t know if the IP69 protection rating will return on the base model, since it was featured on the Oppo A3 Pro. The upcoming A3 model measures 8.1mm in thickness and 191 grams in weight.

Upgrade from LCD to AMOLED

To recall, the Oppo A2 was announced in China with an IPS LCD panel. The TENAA listing confirmed that its successor, Oppo A3 (PJT110), will get an upgrade with an AMOLED display that is 6.67 inches tall. This screen is also expected to offer Full HD+ resolution. While we can’t see the selfie camera, we can expect to see a punch hole cutout on the next-gen model like its predecessor. The older model came with a 90Hz refresh rate, so the A3 would offer a similar or a higher refresh rate panel.

Specs: Processor, RAM, & More

Under the hood, the certification confirmed that the Oppo A3 is equipped with a 2.2GHz chipset. The A2 launched with the Dimensity 6020, so there’s a chance that it may come with a Dimensity 7020 processor. Keep in mind that this is still just speculation at the moment. The chipset may be paired with 8GB and 12GB of RAM and 128GB, 256GB, and even 512GB of internal storage.

One could even expand storage via a microSD card slot. The Oppo A3 is set to be powered by a large 5,500mAh battery pack that could support 33W wired fast charging. For security, it houses an in-display fingerprint scanner. The new handset will likely run on the Android 14 OS based ColorOS 14 custom skin out of the box.

Photography may not see major changes

Back in 2023, the Oppo A2 arrived with a 50-megapixel primary and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Looking at the image, the dual camera setup returns. The primary may retain a 50-megapixel sensor but with a newer sensor that likely offers a 2-megapixel depth sensor again as well.

Expected launch date & pricing

Oppo’s A2 5G launched as the most affordable 512GB storage phone with a starting price tag of 1,699 Yuan (roughly 235 US Dollars). However, it’s possible that the upgrades in specs will likely reflect a higher price. The Oppo A3 was expected to go official before the end of April in China. But as May begins, its release could be teased for this month. We can expect teasers and more leaks to surface online soon, so stick around for more updates.

A forthcoming Oppo phone with model number PJT110 has received approval from China’s TENAA certification platform. The listing has revealed the images and key specifications of the device. Although the device’s moniker remains unconfirmed, speculation suggests it will be known as the Oppo A3 upon its debut in China. The rumored moniker suggests that it will be positioned lower than the Oppo A3 Pro, which went official with an IP69-rated dustproof and water-resistant body earlier this month. Here’s a look at what to expect from the Oppo A3.

Oppo A3 specifications (rumored)

Oppo A3 (PJT110)

To recall, the Oppo A2 from last year featured an IPS LCD panel. According to the TENAA listing, the Oppo PJT110 will have an improved display department, with a 6.67-inch AMOLED screen that produces a Full HD+ resolution.

On the front, the Oppo A3 has a 16-megapixel selfie camera. The vertical camera module on the phone’s back has a 50-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel auxiliary lens. The device is expected to ship with Android 14 and a layer of ColorOS 14.

Under the hood, the Oppo A3 has an unknown 2.2GHz chipset and 8 GB / 12 GB of RAM. The phone will arrive with 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB of storage options, and it will also feature a microSD card slot.

The Oppo A3 will pack a 5,500mAh battery and support 33W fast charging. For security, it will have an in-screen fingerprint sensor. Lastly, the TENAA listing mentions that the A3 will measure 162.9 x 75.6 x 8.1mm and weigh 191 grams. The device may likely go official before the end of this month in China.

Oppo A3 has just been made official and you can consider it a sort of affordable version of the R15. Indeed, its specs sheet is not so different from the latest Oppo release, and neither is its design. The handset comes with an incredibly high screen-to-body ratio and ultra-narrow bezels on each side.

There is a chin, but it is very thin, and there is also a small notch on the upper part of the front panel which contains the earpiece and the front camera. Oppo A3 measures 156 x 75.3 x 7.8 mm and weighs 159 grams. It has a back with a diamond-like texture. The back cover seems to be made of glass, while the frame is made of aluminum. The display has a size of 6.2 inches with 19:9 aspect ratio and a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels. On the hardware side, the mid-ranger has an octa-core Helio P60 chipset, which is the most powerful SoC unleashed by MediaTek in 2018.

The device also comes with a satisfying amount of RAM (4 GB) and a massive internal storage of 128 GB. With Oppo A3, you won’t get a dual camera setup, but there is still a decent 16 MP main camera with a bright f/1.8 aperture. The front snapper has a resolution of 8 MP and a f/2.2 aperture. The camera department is surely the biggest disadvantage of the A3 over its older sibling, the R15. The operating system installed is Android 8.1 Oreo customized with Color OS in the 5.0 version. Oppo A3 has been launched in the Chinese market in four hues: Black, Silver, Pink and Red, with a price tag of CNY 2,099 which roughly translates into $332/€374.

Other than the flagships, it has released three new phones and there is more to come. A new leak has revealed all there is to know about a new phone called the OPPO A3 which is scheduled to launch next month.

From the specs, the OPPO A3 belongs to the mid-range category. It has a 6.2-inch display with a 2280 x 1080 resolution. There is 4GB of RAM on board and it is paired with 128GB of built-in storage.

A MediaTek MTK6771 processor clocked at 2.0GHz is the chipset of choice. This is the Helio P60 for those who do not know. The OPPO A3 also has a 16MP rear camera and an 8MP front-facing camera.

There is a 3,300mAh battery for juice and Android 8.1 Oreo pre-installed. The A3 measures 156 x 75.3 x 7.8 mm and weighs 159g. The leak also reveals that it will launch on May 1 for ¥1999 (~$318).

The photo of the OPPO A3 provided is of a black unit. It has a polygon design on the rear just like the OPPO F7 Diamond Black Special Edition. They actually look alike save for the lack of a fingerprint scanner on the OPPO A3.

The front is home to a full-screen display with a notch at the top. There is a charging port and 3.5mm audio jack at the bottom, sim tray and power button on the right, volume rocker on the left, and a secondary microphone at the top.
