OPPO R9 has been selling very well for the company. In fact, it is said that the production capacity of the R9 is around 2 million per month, which is almost twice (updated production capacity) of the Mi 5 and much more than Huawei Mate 8’s 800,000 per month. We had heard about an FC Barcelona special edition version of this popular model, and now, the phone has been leaked in pictures.

The new leaked images reveal that the OPPO R9 FC Barcelona Edition will come in Red and Grey variants. The phones will have FC Barcelona’s logo at the back with the words “FCBarcelona” Official Partner. Design wise, rest of the looks remain the same as the regular version.

However, OPPO had revealed earlier that the FC Barcelona edition will come with specialized ringtones and UI tweaks to match the theme. Further, these limited edition models will be reportedly signed by FC Barcelona players, adding further value. Finally, OPPO had also revealed that the phone will be quite affordable. But at this moment, we don’t have information on the pricing of the device.

Now, it looks like the sales are strong even after the first day as the company has revealed that it managed to sell more than 400,000 units of the OPPO R9 smartphone within the first four days of sale.

This is really surprising given that China is the hub of low-cost smartphones and OPPO R9 and the R9 Plus are not really cheap products. The cheapest model in the series, namely the R9 itself costs nearly $420. So, it really shows the kind of strong brand image as well as effective marketing strategy of OPPO in China.

The demand for the OPPO R9 is so high that the phone is out of stock in many places. The company released a statement recently saying that the demand was much higher than their initial expectations and they have increased the production to fulfill the high number of orders.

The OPPO R9 series is a big step up from last year’s R7 series which wasn’t as successful as this one. The R9 Plus will go on sale pretty soon and we can expect a good response for the larger model as well.

A few months back, Elephone unveiled a brand new series of high-end smartphones powered by Mediatek’s MT6755 Helio P10 processors. One of the highlights of the lineup was the Elephone P9000 flagship featuring pretty powerful specifications. Now, there’s another Helio P10 powered flagship in town, namely the OPPO R9, so it’s time for a Elephone P9000 vs OPPO R9 specs comparison. Both are similar in many ways, but differ in terms of some specification. Pricing will be it’s biggest difference, which we will elaborate more in the later sections.

Design & Build:

OPPO R9 comes with an all metal design, while the P9000 features a plastic body. Looks wise, we would have to say that the R9 is much better than the Elephone model. After nearly a month of rumors and leaks, OPPO has finally unveiled the new OPPO R9 and R9 Plus flagships in China. The company announced these two devices at its special conference in Beijing a few minutes back.

Given that we still have no word on the OPPO Find 7, the R series seems to be driving the company’s flagship lineup. Hence, both the devices are pretty important for the company.

The OPPO R9 and the R9 Plus feature a similar design, with the R9 sporting a larger display. Both the devices are made out of a metal body. In fact, the company claims that up to 98.02% of the phone’s body is made out of metal. The phone features smooth curves around the edges and the body is subjected to zircon sanding to give it a premium look. The company decided to put the fingerprint sensor up front, so that the remained smooth and flawless.

Coming to the front, the OPPO R9 and R9 Plus both come with a fingerprint sensor embedded into the home button. As revealed in one of its earlier teasers, the R9 will come with narrow 1.66mm borders around the display. This makes sure that the display covers a major portion of the front.

The OPPO R9 measures 151.8 x 74.3 x 6.5mm. Yes, it that slim! As for the R9, it comes with the measurements 163 x 80.8 x 7.4mm. Now, compared to the R9, you might feel that this is thick, however, let me inform you that there’s a large 4120mAh battery under its hood, which is pretty impressive. As for the R9, it comes with a 2850mAh battery. This coupled with the company’s super fast VOOC charging will ensure that you don’t have to worry about the charging the device during the day.

Coming to the specs, the OPPO R9 sports a 5.5-inch FHD 1080p display while the Plus variant features a 6-inch 1080p display. The R9 comes with the Mediatek Helio P10 processor while the R9 Plus has the Snapdragon 652 chipset under the hood. Both chips are clocked at 2GHz. There will be 4GB RAM + 64GB storage on both the models, with an option to upgrade to 128GB.

Coming to the camera department, the R9 comes with a 16MP 1/3 inch sensor up front, with the company’s independently developed “self perfection technology”. The company explains that this improves sensitivity and tolerance to light and noise to a great extent. Further, you get the new beauty 4.0 software to enhance your selfies. If you think this isn’t impressive, the R9 series phones now come with panorama mode up front. The phone can automatically capture and stitch together three different photos to create a wide angle image. So, if you think getting everyone in one shot for a groufie is tough, OPPO R9 has got your back.

Up front, the OPPO R9 features a 13MP sensor with 1/3.06 inch CMOS sensor. The setup comes with a dual drive hybrid AF system which includes traditional focus as well as a contrast phase focusing. Further, it features anti-shake 2.0 to capture blur free images.

Coming to the R9 Plus, the phone features 16MP cameras on both the back and the front. This is Sony IMX298 1/2.8 sensor with f/2.0 aperture. At the moment, it seems like the phone doesn’t come with OIS. But there’s EIS i.e. Electronic Image Stabilization to help reduce camera shake.

As for software, the phone comes with the company’s own Color OS 3.0 on top of Android 5.1.1. As mentioned above, you also get a fingerprint sensor up front, which can unlock the device in just 0.2 seconds. The fingerprint sensor improves with time and also supports mobile payments.

Now, coming to the most important part of today’s launch, i.e. the pricing. Both the phones are a bit cheaper than expected. The OPPO R9 will retail for a price tag of 2799 Yuan ($430) while the R9 Plus will be priced at 3299 Yuan ($507).

The OPPO R9 goes on sale on March 24 in China, while the R9 Plus will be available on April 12. There will be two color options available, gold and rose gold. We still have no idea about international availability but hopefully, the company will reveal more details pretty soon.

Usually, companies tend to pack in the best sensor at the back, so we will have to wait and see whether the R9 comes with such a setup.

One of the highlights of the OPPO R9 is going to be the super thin black borders on the screen. It is said that the borders are just of 1.66mm, which is one of the narrowest in the industry. Other features of the phone include a 5.5-inch display, metal body and fingerprint sensor that unlocks in just 0.2 seconds. OPPO has been teasing the features of its upcoming OPPO R9 flagship for the past few weeks. Now the latest teaser from OPPO reveals that the upcoming flagship will feature a fast fingerprint sensor.

The company revealed via a couple of teasers that the R9 will come with a front facing fingerprint sensor that unlocks within 0.2 seconds. So, you will be able to start using the phone almost instantly you touch the front facing home button integrated with fingerprint sensor.

There have been reports about Chinese companies planning to release such a service, and Huawei was the first one to jump into the mobile payment market. But we are not entirely sure whether OPPO will enter the payment market as well.

In one of its teasers, we can see that the R9’s fingerprint looks a lot like the oval sensor from Meizu. Some manufacturers, like Xiaomi for example, have used an oblong shaped sensor probably to differentiate itself from other manufacturers. But OPPO seems to be taking the usual approach to fingerprint ID, instead of a different design.

Although OPPO isn’t officially confirming any other device apart from the OPPO R9, we are almost sure that we will meet a larger sibling, namely the OPPO R9 Plus at the event. Instead of an octa-core chip which is likely the Helio X10 inside the OPPO R9, the Plus variant will reportedly come with Snapdragon 652 and a larger 4000mAh battery as well. Other specs will be the same like 16MP rear and front cameras, and 4GB RAM.

On the other hand, the OPPO R9 Plus features a 1.8GHz octa-core chip most likely the Snapdragon 652. Both feature 4GB RAM, but storage is 32GB on the R9 and 64GB on the R9 Plus. There’s a MicroSD card slot on both the devices, so you don’t have to worry about storage. A 16MP camera sensor adorns the back of both the devices. OPPO has confirmed that the OPPO R9 flagship will meet us on March 19 in China. Now the same phone, along with its larger brother has just hit TENAA which reveals a lot of things about the two upcoming devices.

First of all, design wise, the OPPO R9 and the R9 Plus are similar. Like the name suggests, the R9 Plus will be an enlarged version of the device, featuring a larger 6-inch display. There are some other differences between the two models, with the Plus variant featuring much better specs.

But before moving to the specs, one thing to mention about the design is the front facing fingerprint sensor. The phone features a clean back and comes with a fingerprint sensor integrated into the home button. Like its predecessors, the OPPO R9 is pretty thin, featuring a 6.5mm body. The R9 Plus will be a bit thicker, with a 7.4mm body, but nothing to complain here since it features a much larger battery as well.

Like mentioned above, both the models have a few differences in terms of specs. The OPP R8 comes with a 1.95GHz octa-core processor which could be the Helio X10. But we can’t be sure of that right now. On the other hand, the OPPO R9 Plus comes with a 1.8GHz octa-core chip, which is probably the Snapdragon 652. So, no SD820 as rumored before.

As for the display, the R9 sports a 5.5-inch 1080p screen while the R9 Plus comes with a larger 6-inch 1080p panel. Both models have 4GB RAM but the R9 has 32GB ROM while R9 Plus features 64GB ROM. OPPO’s first flagship smartphone for 2016 will meet us on March 17, but it’s not what we expected. As reported yesterday, the company has confirmed that it will launch the OPPO R9 flagship later this month. So, there’s still no sign of the rumored OPPO Find 9 flagship yet.

As for the OPPO R9, the company has started teasing the device via its official weibo page. The latest teaser gives us a glimpse of the upcoming smartphone for the first time. The image confirms that the phone will come with a smooth design in gold. You will find the power button on the right side along with a MicroSD / SIM card slots just above it.

The image also kind of confirms that the phone is going to be slim. The previous generation OPPO R7 was quite thin, measuring just 6.3mm and the R5 even thinner with a 4.9mm frame. So, it’s quite likely that the upcoming OPPO R9 continues with the lineup’s tradition of offering a slim metallic body.

As for the specs, it’s still too early to say anything about the device. Traditionally, the OPPO R series have been mid-range offerings with a great design. However, this could change with the OPPO R9, given the amount of focus the lineup has started getting. Rumors state that the phone could end up as a powerful device, featuring the best SoC right now namely the Snapdragon 820. However, the company is yet to confirm the internal specs of the device.

What we can be almost sure of is the presence of the company fast charging VOOC technology on the device. Given that the R9 is rumored to feature powerful specs, is it that OPPO replaced the Find series with the R series?

We haven’t heard anything concrete about the mighty OPPO Find 9 in the past few weeks and the company sure isn’t giving out any indications that the lineup is still alive.

Let’s hope that the company clears out these doubts in the next few weeks.

Although the two major tech events of the year, namely the CES 2016 and MWC 2016 are over, we didn’t see an OPPO flagship smartphone in the first two months.

We expected to see a phone like the OPPO Find 9 at Barcelona this year, however, the company decided to just focus and unveil its Super VOOC fast charging tech which charges a phone in just 15 minutes at the event.

But now, OPPO is teasing the release of its newest flagship device. It looks like we still won’t be seeing the OPPO Find 9 anytime soon, as advertisements all over the subway and bus stations in China reveal that the company will be launching the OPPO R9 flagship instead, on March 17. The new OPPO R9 will reportedly come with a powerful camera and is being dubbed as the new camera phone from OPPO. We can also expect the newly unveiled Super VOOC fast charging technology to end up on the device.

Although we haven’t seen any rumors or leaks about the OPPO R9, there have been reports which say that the phone will come with much better specs than its predecessors. Traditionally, OPPO’s R series smartphones could never boast of high-end specs, with last year’s R7 powered by the mid-range Snapdragon 615 chipset and 3GB of RAM. But this year, with the R9, things could be different, with potential specs that include 4GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage with the latest VOOC tech.

The adverts in China suggest that Li YiFeng, a famous Chinese actor and singer will most likely be present at the Spring Conference event in March.

Now, we just hope that the R9 features powerful specs and retails for a relatively affordable price tag. Anything less than $400 can be considered as competitive for OPPO.
