Recently, OPPO rolled out the ColorOS 12 stable update for a bunch of smartphones. Just a few days later, the same update is now available for even more handsets. With this, the company has almost finished the Android 12 stable rollout for the month of January 2022.

According to multiple official announcement posts on OPPO Community, the Android 12-based ColorOS 12 stable update is now live for the following phones.

Users of the aforementioned devices can head over to Settings > Software Update to check whether their unit has received the update. Since the OTA system update is being pushed in batches, some users may receive it later than others. Anyway, everyone should get the latest update in the coming days.

As we mentioned earlier, OPPO has almost completed the ColorOS 12 stable release rollout for this month. The only smartphone that’s left to receive the update is OPPO A95 5G. We expect this handset to receive the new software update very soon.

Realme X7 Pro was recently launched in India after months from the first release in China. Despite several months passed, it is still one of the most impressive flagship killers out there. But at the end of the last year, even OPPO decided to release an amazing flagship killer: the Reno5 Pro 5G. Unlike the Reno4 Pro, the new handset is not a mid-ranger but it comes with a high-end chipset, one of the best by MediaTek. Is it better to spend a bit more and grab a unit of the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G or Realme X7 Pro is a smarter purchase? This comparison will clear your ideas in regards.

OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G vs Realme X7 Pro

Design

If you prefer having the most beautiful and gorgeous phone, then you should go for the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G without thinking twice. First of all, it has a display with curved edges making it way more elegant. Further, it is a thinner and lighter device. Even the build quality is better: the phone is a glass sandwich protected by Gorilla Glass 5 and it has an aluminum frame. Even the screen-to-body ratio is higher compared to the Realme X7 Pro. The latter still comes with a good design and build quality, but the Reno5 Pro has flagship-like aesthetics which can be considered objectively superior.

Display

Do you need the best display in terms of image quality or for gaming? If you are a gamer, then you may prefer the Realme X7 Pro due to its higher 120 Hz refresh rate. But for all the other activities, the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G is actually better: unlike the Realme X7 Pro, it features the HDR10+ certification and it even comes with a higher peak brightness (up to 1100 nits just like expensive flagships). Both the handsets come with an in-display fingerprint scanner and a punch-hole design.

Specs & Software

OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G and Realme X7 Pro are powered by the same flagship-class chipset: the Dimensity 1000+ by MediaTek. But there is a difference when it comes to the memory configurations. The OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G packs up to 12 GB of RAM, while you can get a max of 8 GB RAM with the Realme X7 Pro. Even when it comes to the software there is an important difference: Realme X7 Pro is still based on Android 10, while OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G ships with Android 11 out of the box.

Camera

If we talk about the camera setup, OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G and Realme X7 Pro are more or less at the same level, but the OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G is slightly better. It has a brighter focal aperture for both the main rear camera and the front camera, which should allow for better photo quality, especially in low light conditions. For the rest, they have the same secondary sensors including an 8 MP ultrawide lens and a pair of 2 MP sensors for macros and depth.

Battery

The Realme X7 Pro is a slightly better battery phone because it has a slightly bigger battery: its capacity is 4500 mAh against the 4350 mAh offered by the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G. Both feature 65W fast charging (SuperVOOC and Dart, different names for the same technology), but the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G is faster to reach 100 percent because of its smaller battery. According to Realme, the X7 Pro needs about 35 minutes to go from 0 to 100 percent of the battery charge. However, you should note that OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G ships with Android 11 out of the box which provides further battery optimizations which could help you in a few scenarios.

Price

You can grab a unit of the Realme X7 Pro in India for Rs. 29,999 / $415 (for the configuration with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage), while you need Rs. 35,990 / $497 to get an OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G (for the 8/128 GB configuration). We believe there is no doubt about the fact that OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G is a better device: it provides a better display quality, cameras, and design. But you can save money by choosing the X7 Pro and, despite that, you do not have to face big compromises.

Over the past couple of years, OPPO has focused on adding consumer pleasing attributes like a feature-rich camera setup and premium build quality on its Reno smartphones. However, the earlier models lacked the processing power to take on the flagships in the market. That changed in 2021 when OPPO released the Reno5 Pro 5G with the new Dimensity 1000+ 5G SoC which ensures CPU power is no longer an issue.

The Reno5 Pro 5G is already seeing better reception than the Reno4 Pro model with the phone registering 91% growth in the first week sales as compared to its predecessor. This isn’t surprising given how the new model is a much better upgrade as compared to its predecessor and retails at a similar price point.

So today, in this OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G review, let’s take a closer look at the phone and its features and see if the Dimensity 1000+ is worth the hype.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Review: Design

The biggest selling point of the OPPO Reno5 Pro is its premium design. I know a lot of people like to throw the word premium towards any phone with a decent design but the new Reno model definitely deserves this adjective. The phone stands out thanks to its extremely thin and lightweight design and a sparkly finish on the back.

The unit I have is the Astral Blue variant. It sparkles at certain angles in a matte finish, which means you don’t have to worry about cleaning fingerprint smudges from its back. The blue color shifts to a shade of purple at certain angles. To top it off, the phone has a polished aluminum frame going around the body, adding to its elegant design.

The Reno5 Pro is sleek at 7.6mm and weighs 173 grams. This polished design and the form factor is what makes the new Reno model special. The smooth edges make it comfortable to hold, even with one hand. Given that this is a 5G phone with a pretty decent 4350mAh battery, the design is definitely its stand out feature.

The aluminum frame feels solid and the power and volume buttons housed on the sides are clicky and easily accessible, as they are located around the middle of the frame instead of the upper half like other flagships.

At the bottom, you get a USB-C port, microphone, single speakers, and dual SIM card slot. On the top, you have the ‘Designed for Reno’ branding along with another microphone opening.

Like most other flagship smartphones, the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G features an in-display fingerprint sensor. We’ve come to a stage where in-display sensors have evolved to be nearly as fast as a physical sensor and the new Reno’s sensor is no exception.

Unfortunately, the Reno5 Pro 5G does not have a certified IP rating so it’s best that you keep the phone away from water and moisture.

The single speaker setup is sufficiently loud and clear but you will end up missing stereo speakers, especially if you are going to rely on its loudspeakers regularly.

OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G Display

Another big highlight of the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G is its 6.55-inch 2400 x 1080p Super AMOLED display. The panel is bright and well saturated, even when you use it outdoors, and comes with a 90Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ certification. An area where this phone shines is video playback. The super-thin top bezels and the edges which curve into the back, make for a truly immersive experience, whether it’s watching a video or playing games.

This Super AMOLED panel with its curved edges features vibrant colors and good viewing angles, making it a flagship worthy screen, even if it’s just 1080p. So whether it was watching a video on Netflix or browsing through the gallery, the 90Hz refresh rate display provided a smooth scrolling and viewing experience. The front and back are both protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

Also, for those who are worried about the edges registering ghost touches, be assured that the software is smart enough to not allow the edges to come in between your experience.

The 32MP front camera is housed inside a punch-hole that’s located on the top-left corner. It small enough to ensure a distraction-free viewing experience and the software has now matured to smartly hide it in plain sight. Note that my review unit came with a scratch guard installed, so you don’t have to run off searching for one when you purchase the device.

Overall, the Reno5 Pro 5G shines in both display and design departments.

OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G Review: Performance & Gaming

When it comes to benchmark the OPPO Reno5 Pro unit scored 405600 on Antutu 8.3.4 which was pretty good. The score may not be close to the flagship Snapdragon chips but it’s still a good indication that the chip should handle most of the processes that you throw at it. Other benchmark scores are given below, you can have a look at them if interested.

The 7nm MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ is the chipmaker’s best SoC from 2020. It comes with four performance Cortex-A77 cores and a 9-core Mali G77 MP9 GPU. In real life, the chip ensures the Reno5 Pro 5G runs without any glitches or lags. The UI is fluid, animations are smooth, and even the gestures work properly. Multi-tasking is also a breeze on this phone so everyday tasks like watching videos, listening to music, editing a few photos on apps like snapseed, and browsing through websites for hours — all work very smoothly.

As for the gaming performance, I am not much of a mobile gamer, but I tried my luck with COD: Mobile and Asphalt 8, and both the games ran smoothly. COD Mobile in the highest graphics settings didn’t encounter any issues and the gameplay was smooth. As far as I could see, the touch inputs were fast and accurate as the 180Hz touch sampling rate may have aided in my gaming experience.

As for heating, the Reno5 Pro 5G heated up to around 42 degrees celsius when I was gaming for half an hour to 45 minutes but it never reached a level where it affected my gaming experience. Without a cover, the phone feels a bit warm to touch but with a cover on the back, this shouldn’t bother your gameplay.

OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G Review: ColorsOS 11 UI

Over the past couple of years, ColorOS has evolved into a pretty good custom UI for Android. It’s been a while since I used ColorOS, so personally, the UI elements and design felt fresh and colorful.

Some of the interesting ColorOS 11 features I found on the Reno5 Pro include the quick startup feature for games (via gamespace), the three levels of dark mode (enhanced, medium, and gentle), a number of customization options including animations for AOD, and flexdrop for multitasking – which worked pretty well when it did (some apps may have compatibility issues though).

There are certain aspects of the UI like bloatware that can’t be helped, but still, the OS offers enough customization options to keep everyone interested.

OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G Review: Camera

The Reno5 Pro comes with the following camera setup.

• 64MP f/1.7 primary camera sensor
• 8MP f/2.2 Ultrawide 115˚ sensor
• 2MP f/2.4 Macro camera
• 2MP f/2.4 Portrait Camera

64MP Primary Camera

The samples from the 64MP primary camera were sharp and saturated. Most of you should be happy with the output from the main camera and if you are someone who likes images to be more saturated, you can turn on the AI Highlight algorithm for your photography.

One peculiar thing I noticed was that the primary camera slightly overexposed some images, especially when it came to landscapes. Apart from that, the images came out clean and sharp with a good amount of details and an excellent dynamic range.

When the lighting goes down, there is some visible noise. But if you turn on the AI Highlight mode in the camera, you can get a visibly cleaner photo with good colors. The night time images were pretty bright too.

Let’s take a look at a few samples.

As you can see in the sample above, the photo features a good dynamic range and has colors that are very close to real life. The image also has a lot of details, including the textures on the footpath and the bark of the trees. If the exposure was slightly tweaked, I feel the image would have looked cleaner.

Take another example of a photo shot at 8 AM. The image has a really good dynamic range and the real orangish shade of the early morning sun is retained along with a good amount of details.

Further, the AI Highlight feature boosts the saturation to pretty good levels (see the difference in the samples below) ensuring that your photos are social media ready right out of the gallery.

9 – OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G Footpath

Images taken indoors under good lighting were very crisp and saturated. OPPO’s scene recognition (via AI Highlight) was always spot on in identifying the correct scene in focus and applying appropriate tweaks.

There are a bunch of filters and options to play around with as well which makes capturing photos from its 64MP camera quite fun.

Low Light Photography

As for low light images, I was pretty happy with the results. The noise levels were controlled and the 64MP camera still retained a good amount of details with real-life colors. Overall, it captures clean and saturated images, which most people will prefer.

Even when the lighting dims down significantly, the Reno5Pro impressed with the amount of details and range of colors it managed to capture. I found this to be consistent in all of the low light scenarios.

Some phones lose saturation when lighting goes down, but the Reno5 Pro did well to maintain the color and details.

Ultra-Wide Camera

The 8MP Ultra Wide Camera can capture decent wide angle shots with good colors. The AI Highlight feature further helps to boost the saturation levels, improving the quality of the samples.

But UW camera struggles in extremely low light situations which isn’t surprising given it’s an average 8MP sensor. Night mode does boost up the wide-angle image but with fewer details to spare, the images lose out their sharpness. However, I do have to mention that the noise control in these low light situations was impressive as I’ve seen phones with ultra-wide-angle sensors that take slightly brighter photos at the expense of additional noise, rendering the image useless.

So the UW mode is not really meant for night time photography. Stick to daylight conditions for your wide-angle shots and you should be satisfied with the experience.

It’s also worth adding that unless you are using an expensive flagship, the ultra-wide camera on your smartphone won’t likely perform well in extremely low light situations. So this result is in line with other phones in its price segment.

Night Mode

The 64MP camera in the standard mode was pretty good even when the lighting was extremely dim or nonexistent. Details were retained to a considerable extent and the image came out well balanced (not overexposed). The night mode can turn up the brightness to a considerable extent. However, as with other night modes, when u boost the brightness of an extremely low light image, some details are lost.

Personally, I’d advise against using the night mode unless for scenarios when the scene is extremely dark as the standard mode is good enough for most low light situations.

Overall, I m pretty happy with the night time performance of the primary sensor without the night mode.

Portrait Camera

The front portrait is pretty good and you can get some good looking selfies. However, the rear portrait camera does not meet the expectations of a Rs. 35,000 smartphone. You can get decent shots if you try really hard but the amount of background blur was not very strong which didn’t allow the object in focus to get that special bokeh effect.

Macro Camera

The Macro camera was even worse than the portrait camera. I couldn’t get a decent macro shot as the phone failed to focus when I was close to an object.

So, in conclusion, the 64MP f/1.7 primary camera is impressive while the 8MP ultra-wide-angle shooter also does a pretty good job at capturing decent quality wide shots. However, don’t expect much from the portrait and macro cameras.

VIDEOS

FDF Portrait Video system was heavily marketed by OPPO so I was curious to see its real-life improvements. I have to agree that the videos do have an edge when the algorithms work properly. The noise is well controlled, the dynamic range is good, and the overall video has good details and saturation too. However, I feel this algorithm needs to be a bit more consistent at low light conditions to guarantee better results all the time.

When the lighting goes down significantly, the algorithm tries to aggressively increase the brightness and as a result, there’s visible noise in the video. Personally, I would have preferred a slightly less bright but cleaner video sample. You can check out a couple of video samples from here.

So if you are shooting videos in good lighting conditions on the Reno5 Pro, the FDF Portrait Video system will slightly boost the quality of your videos, giving it an edge over other devices. OPPO also offers a bunch of filters and features such as AI Color Highlight which works pretty well to make your videography experience a lot more fun and interesting.

OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G Review: Battery

The Reno5 Pro 5G packs a dual-battery design with a total capacity of 4350mAh. The 65W charger is one of the fastest in the market and can juice up your battery at blazing fast speeds. You can go from 15% to 75% in just 15 minutes! Charge it for another 15 minutes and your battery is topped up to 100%. So charging your Reno phone will never be an issue.

As for the battery consumption, the 7nm Dimensity 1000+ is not a battery hogger and provides an all-day battery life on the device. With AOD turned on, the battery consumption increases slightly but with a 65W charger in your bag, you never really have to worry about battery life on the phone.

Note that in India, we don’t have a live 5G network so all the tests were conducted over 4G and Wi-Fi networks.

OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G Review: Verdict

As I mentioned in my review, there are clear strong points for the Reno5 Pro 5G. It has a killer design and display, with a super-fast 65W charging that ensures a 4350mAh battery is more than enough for most consumers.

Dimensity 1000+ was the big question mark about the device but so far, having used the phone for over a month, I have found no perceivable difference in performance over say a Snapdragon 865 powered smartphone like the OnePlus 8. Gaming has been smooth, ColorOS has been fluid and responsive, and overall, Dimensity 1000+ has delivered.

As for the cameras, the Reno5 Pro 5G has a pretty good setup for most of your needs. But portrait and macro cameras are practically useless. The wide-angle sensor turned out to be pretty decent despite its low resolution. That said, if you are a regular consumer, the 64MP primary camera will not disappoint. Just activate the AI Highlight algorithm to boost the saturation and your samples should be social media ready right out of the stock camera.

The FDF Portrait Video system with AI Highlight video is a feature that still needs work. It boosts the colors and reduces the noise in the video to a perceivable extent in most scenarios but it doesn’t really feel revolutionary. It’s more of an evolutionary upgrade to the Reno series this year but I’m excited to see how OPPO refines these complex algorithms to deliver a consistently improved videography experience on its phones.

For Rs. 35,990, the OPPO Reno5 Pro hits all the right notes for a smartphone in this price segment. So, if you are looking for a smartphone around this budget, you might want to check out the new Reno5 Pro model.

A lot of flagship killers from Chinese manufacturers are hitting the market in the last months. In December, the OPPO Reno5 Pro was officially announced, then Vivo X60 Pro went official as well. If you want a flagship phone sold at a modest price, then these devices are definitely among the greatest choices you can do. But there is an older device sold in the same price range which may catalyze your attention even more: the OnePlus 8T. All of these devices are actually available in the Chinese market they carry similar prices: do you want to know which one is the best? Design

The OnePlus 8T has definitely the ugliest design. A lot of people will like the fact that it has a flat display instead of the curved screens found on OPPO Reno 5 Pro and Vivo X60 Pro, but the screen-to-body ratio is lower and the overall look is less impressive. With their curved displays, OPPO Reno5 Pro and Vivo X60 Pro look more elegant. The OPPO Reno5 Pro is my favorite one because of its more beautiful camera module: it is even the most lightweight phone of the trio. All of these phones are built with a glass back and an aluminum frame, so premium materials just like the most expensive flagships.

Display

The most advanced displays belong to the OnePlus 8T and the Vivo X60 Pro. They have more or less the same specifications and there are marginal differences between them, so we won’t pick a single winner in this comparison. You would better focus on the other specifications. We prefer them over the OPPO Reno5 Pro due to their higher refresh rate: up to 120 Hz, while OPPO Reno5 Pro stops at 90 Hz. They both feature a Full HD+ resolution, the AMOLED technology, and the HDR10+ certification. On each phone, you get an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Hardware/Software

According to the AnTuTu benchmark, the Exynos 1080 found on the Vivo X60 Pro is the most powerful chipset of this comparison. It scores higher than the Snapdragon 865 found in the OnePlus 8T, and the Dimensity 1000+ found on the OPPO Reno5 Pro is actually less powerful than the Snapdragon 865. Further, the Exynos 1080 is built with a better production process: 5 nm instead of 7 nm. Vivo X60 Pro features 12 GB of RAM and UFS 3.1 native storage, while OPPO Reno5 Pro gets slower UFS 2.1 storage. So the ranking sees Vivo X60 Pro at the first place, followed by OnePlus 8T and OPPO Reno5 Pro. All the phones ship with Android 11 out of the box.

Camera

The winner of the camera comparison is the Vivo X60 Pro. It features a 48 MP main sensor with a brighter f/1.5 focal aperture, a periscope sensor with 5x optical zoom and an 8 MP resolution, a 13 MP ultrawide sensor with 2x optical zoom for portraits, dual OIS, and a 13 MP ultrawide camera. OnePlus 8T comes right after with a 48 MP quad-camera and OIS, including a 16 MP ultrawide sensor. OPPO Reno5 Pro has a midrange-class camera department without OIS and with a 64 MP main sensor.

Battery

The OnePlus 8T has a bigger 4500 mAh battery and it provides a longer battery life. OnePlus 8T and OPPO Reno5 Pro feature a faster 65W charging technology. Vivo X60 Pro has slower charging and a smaller battery than both its rivals.

Price

OnePlus 8T is priced at about €416/$507 in China, OPPO Reno5 Pro starts at €410/$500, and Vivo X60 Pro has a €575/$700 listing price. The Vivo X60 Pro is the best device for this comparison due to its better cameras and strong chipset, but its value for money is lower. The OnePlus 8T actually provides a higher quality-price ratio than the Vivo X60 Pro thanks to its street prices (it is older), while OPPO Reno5 Pro sits in the middle.

Despite the OPPO Reno5 Pro is the winner (and it even features a higher brightness, up to 1100 nits), Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro 5G has one of the most interesting displays out there. It supports a high 144 Hz refresh ratio, the highest ever seen on a phone. Further, it has the HDR10+ certification.

Specs & Software

If we talk about the hardware department, then Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro 5G is superior. The Snapdragon 865 found on the flagship killer is actually superior to the Dimensity 1000+ mounted on the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G. Further, it has a faster UFS 3.1 internal storage. But the OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G comes in a variant with 12 GB of RAM, while the Mi 10T Pro 5G offers a max of 8 GB of RAM. The Xiaomi flagship runs Android 10 out of the box, while the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G runs Android 11 as it is a more recent handset.

Camera

Both Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro 5G and OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G are good camera phones, but they are not top-end camera phones. Between these devices, the better one is the Mi 10T Pro 5G. It is equipped with a 108 MP main sensor with OIS, a 13 MP ultrawide sensor, and a 5 MP macro camera. Battery

The Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro 5G is equipped with a bigger 5000 mAh battery and it is able to guarantee a longer battery life in a lot of scenarios. It is not among the best battery phone, but its battery life is very satisfying. But the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G remains a pretty nice battery phone with its 4350 mAh capacity. Further, it features a way faster charging technology with 65W power. Last but not least, it supports reverse charging so that you can use it as a power bank to charge other devices (wired charging only).

Price

OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G is priced at €410/$500 in the Chinese market and it will probably hit the global market under the Find X3 series later this year. It is the first flagship phone from the Reno lineup since the Reno 10x Zoom and one of the most powerful devices in the market, despite its price is not excessive. In this comparison, we decided to highlight the main differences between the latest OPPO high-end model and other flagships from the main brands released in 2020. We chose the iPhone 12 Pro and Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra for this specs comparison because the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the S21 lineup are definitely too expensive and recent for the Reno5 Pro+. If we talk about the build quality, then the iPhone 12 Pro has no rivals here. If we only consider the look, the OPPO Reno5 Pro+ 5G is very attractive due to its thin and lightweight design, as well as its high screen-to-body ratio. But there is to say that the iPhone 12 Pro is actually more compact and thinner than the OPPO Reno5 Pro+. The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is the biggest one but still comes with a very attractive design and a waterproof body thanks to the IP68 certification.

The OPPO Reno5 Pro+ has a 90 Hz refresh rate and a very good panel, but despite its standard refresh rate, the iPhone 12 Pro actually comes with a better display delivering a higher-end image reproduction. In each case, we are talking about OLED panles, but the iPhone 12 Pro lacks an in-display fingerprint scanner, unlike its two rivals. On the other hand, it relies on Face ID (3D facial recognition) for authentication.

Hardware and Software

If you want the highest performance, then you should go for the iPhone 12 Pro. It is equipped with an amazing Apple A14 Bionic chipset built at 5 nm and paired with 6 GB of RAM. But you have to deal with iOS, and if you are an advanced user or you do not own an Apple ecosystem, you might not like it. If we consider the U.S. version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G, it is more powerful than the OPPO Reno5 Pro+ thanks to the Snapdragon 865+ mobile platform. But the OPPO Reno5 Pro+ has a better chipset than the EU version of the Note 20 Ultra coming with a weaker Exynos 990. OPPO Reno5 Pro+ runs Android 11 out of the box, Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G has Android 10, and iPhone 12 Pro comes with iOS 14.

Camera

Each of these devices is a camera phone and it is very hard to pick the best one. Their performance mostly depend on the situation in which you click the photos. The iPhone 12 Pro is more interesting when it comes to video recording, while Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G has better zoom capabilities thanks to its 12 MP periscope camera with 5x optical zoom. The OPPO Reno5 Pro+ features an amazing 50 MP main sensor: the new Sony IMX766. Overall, iPhone 12 Pro looks more convincing, but we had no chance to test the OPPO Reno5 Pro+ as it just debuted in China.

Battery

Despite its 4500 mAh capacity, the battery of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G is disappointing. With just 2815 mAh, the iPhone 12 Pro is able to achieve similar results. Instead, we believe the OPPO Reno5 Pro+ will actually be better. It also comes with a faster charging technology, but you should keep in mind that it lacks wireless charging.

Price

OPPO Reno5 Pro+ starts from €500/$605 in China, while you need more than €1000/$1200 to get iPhone 12 Pro and Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G in the global market. Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra looks like a more complete phone for a lot of users, and so is the iPhone 12 Pro for the remaining ones. But the OPPO Reno5 Pro+ can let you save a lot of money while still getting a great flagship.

If you only care about normal photos, the Reno5 Pro+ is enough. The Find X2 Pro has a periscope sensor with a 5x optical zoom that is not present on the Reno5 Pro+. It also features a better 48 MP ultrawide camera, while Reno5 Pro+ stops at 16 MP. You do not get a dedicated macro camera on the Find X2 Pro, but the periscopic sensor is definitely more important. OPPO Reno5 Pro+ supports a faster 65W faster technology, but, unlike the Mi 11, it lacks wireless charging and reverse wireless charging (it only supports reverse wired charging).

The Xiaomi Mi 11 and the OPPO Reno5 Pro+ are priced at about €500/$610 in their base variants: the price refers to the Chinese market as they are not available in the international market. Videos have always been an important part of our lives and as smartphones are getting faster and smarter, these handheld all-purpose devices can potentially replace your dedicated DSLRs, point and shoot cameras, and even action cameras for your videography needs.

As much as we have advanced in the smartphone imaging department, videos have often been a neglected feature on Android smartphones, even on flagships. However, in recent years, brands have eventually figured out the importance of smartphones as video cameras and are focusing on improving the overall videography experience.

OPPO has been at the forefront of optimizing smartphone cameras and we have already seen some interesting technologies from the brand like the RFB-ERSGAN neural network which upscales original low-resolution images into high-resolution ones without losing details or even the Hybrid Zoom technology with a stacked periscope zoom lens structure.

In the upcoming Reno5Pro 5G, OPPO will be using its brand new Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) Portrait Video System. This is a set of imaging algorithms that work behind the scenes to optimize the video on the new device. And in a recent briefing, OPPO explained how the system works and how it optimizes the videos according to a number of parameters for the best possible output.

So here’s a quick look at how OPPO’s FDF Portrait Video System on the OPPO Reno5Pro 5G works. This article isn’t meant to be a deep dive into the system. Instead, it’s a quick overview of what happens behind the scenes when you take a video using the phone.

As mentioned above, OPPO’s camera system is a collection of different algorithms that work in tandem to optimize the videos recorded on the OPPO Reno5Pro 5G. The system is comprised of two main engines:

1. Quality Enhancement Engine

As the name suggests, the Quality Enhancement Engine improves the quality of the video in a number of different parameters like brightness, dynamic range, and noise reduction. This engine works in the background to improve the overall quality of the video being recorded.

2. Portrait Perception Engine

The Portrait Perception Engine on the other hand focuses on scene recognition. It works in the background to identify human figures in the scene and effectively optimize them with respect to its environment. This particular engine is also responsible for enabling creative filters inside the video like the AI Color Portrait mode.

HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS 

The two engines work together to optimize the video on the Reno5Pro 5G. Each engine has its own set of optimizations being processed in the background. Now let’s take a quick look at these processes.

Quality Enhancement Engine

The Quality Enhancement Engine is comprised of two AI algorithm architectures – AI Highlight Video and Ultra Steady 3.0.

• • AI Highlight Video
    OPPO reveals that AI Highlight Video is its proprietary algorithm architecture that combines Ultra Night Video Algorithms and Live HDR Algorithms to optimize the brightness, color, and clarity in videos, irrespective of its light levels. OPPO also notes that this is the first time that they have been able to use both its Night and Live HDR algorithms simultaneously. This means that AI Highlight Video works in daylight as well as low-light situations and it’s available on both front and rear cameras. You just have to press a button in the camera UI to turn on this feature.
    AI Highlight Video optimizes the video in three different parameters.
    • • AI Adaptive Brightness Enhancement: The algorithm uses adaptive gain to control the exposure time to ensure the images in the video are bright yet not overexposed.

     

    • • AI Adaptive Dynamic Range: The Adaptive Dynamic Range adjusts the dynamic range to each frame in a video using Dynamic Range Conversion and Filmic Tone Mapping (FTM) technologies. OPPO claims that this process restores lost colors, brightness, and darkness to the image’s natural levels. This process also includes Multi-Frame HDR for better dynamic range across the entire video.

     

    • • AI Adaptive Noise Reduction: This process adds inter-frame fusion for temporal noise reduction (between two frames) and intra-frame fusion (inside the frame) for spatial noise reduction. OPPO claims that this process removes an image’s noise without removing essential details, unlike other regular de-noising algorithms.

     

    It’s clear that OPPO is giving a lot of importance to its AI Highlight Video algorithm. In fact, the company shared a few key stats on how it improves the overall quality and performance of videography on smartphones.

    OPPO reveals that AI Highlight video enhances the brightness of night-time videos by 74.4% with 33.7% clarity as compared to the regular video mode. It takes just 20ms to complete the entire process on the Reno5Pro 5G while the power consumption also drops by 40% as compared to its predecessor.

  • Ultra Steady 3.0
    OPPO’s Quality Enhancement Engine also depends upon its new generation of Ultra Steady 3.0 technology which provides stabilization technology to a broader range of scenarios like running, jumping, and even extreme sports.
    

Next up is the portrait perception engine. A lot of you might already be familiar with this engine. This set of algorithms is responsible for enabling portrait centric features like the cool AI Color Portrait videos, irrespective of the background or the state of the person.

Portrait Perception Engine

Portrait Perception Engine undergoes three typical processes when you shoot a video.

• • • • Scene Design Manager: The first stage is defining the portrait scene and processing the requirements needed for the same. Using OPPO’s own database with over 10 million data, the Scene Design manager can analyze real-life portrait scenes in different scenarios and provide required adjustments to the video against a set of fixed parameters. This is the first stage where the engine prepares the video for further processing.
        

     

    • • AI Modelling: Once the scene is assessed, AI models and deep neural networks kick into action, essentially separating out the portrait from the background. This is a very important part of OPPO’s portrait video processing. To increase the speed and accuracy of its AI model that identifies portraits, the company is using its own database to train the SOTA AI model. It helps to further compress these models making them suitable for smaller devices like smartphones. OPPO claims that the entire portrait recognition process can be performed in less than a millisecond, which is extremely important for a seamless and instantaneous videography experience.

     

    • Portrait Processing: When you look at its real-life applications, the Portrait Perception Engine forms the base of OPPO’s FDF Portrait Video System. The final portrait processing algorithm optimizes the video in three aspects:
      1. Face Optimization
      2. Motion Tracking
      3. Instance Segmentation
      

      Thanks to the Portrait Perception Engine which includes portrait identification and portrait processing, OPPO’s smartphones with the FDF Portrait Video system can:

      • Accurately identify features of every person and their faces even if the subjects are side-on to the camera or are partially obscured.

Last month, Chinese smartphone maker OPPO had launched its next-generation Reno lineup in its home market — OPPO Reno5. The series includes four phones — Reno5, Reno5 Pro, Reno5 Pro+, and the newly launched Reno5 4G.

Today, OPPO has officially confirmed that the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G smartphone will be launched in the Indian market on 18th January. It is touted to be India’s first device to come powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ chipset.

As for the specifications, the Reno5 Pro features a 6.55-inch OLED display that offers 2400 x 1080 pixels screen resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. Apart from being powered by the Dimensity 1000+ SoC, the phone comes with up to 12GB RAM and 256GB storage.

Currently, there’s no information available about which memory variants will be unveiled in the Indian market. To know for sure, we will have to wait for a couple of weeks more for the official launch event to take place.

However, the highlight of the OPPO Reno5 Pro remains the camera department and the company is making sure to market the phone as such. It features a 64MP primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide sensor, and two 2MP sensors, completing the quad-camera module.

On the front side, the device features a 32MP snapper for taking selfies and video calling. The phone, which supports Dual SIM 5G, is running the latest Android 11 operating system out-of-the-box with ColorOS 11 on top. The device is powered by a 4,350mAh battery that supports 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging technology.

Xiaomi just launched the new Xiaomi Mi 11: the first-ever flagship equipped with the new Snapdragon 888. But despite having the best chipset in the Android world, the Mi 11 is still a flagship killer sold at a very interesting price tag. Besides the Mi 11, two more flagships went official in the last days of 2020: the OPPO Reno5 Pro+ and the Vivo X60 Pro. In this comparison, we decided to compare the specifications of the best Android flagships released from Chinese brands in the last part of 2020 in order to let you understand which one is the most interesting handset you can actually buy without spending a huge amount of money.

Design

The Xiaomi Mi 11 has a very original and beautiful design. With its camera module boasting rounded corners and a very high screen-to-body ratio, it is definitely an attractive phone which tries to differentiate itself from the concurrence. But the OPPO Reno5 Pro+ is my favorite one for a simple reason: its electrochromic body. Its rear side is able to change its color with a simple double tap on it, and this is an amazing feature in terms of design. The Vivo X60 Pro still comes with a beautiful design and premium materials, but I personally prefer the OPPO Reno5 Pro+ and I think a lot of people will agree with me.

Display

The Xiaomi Mi 11 is equipped with the most advanced display: for the first time, Xiaomi opted for a display with a Quad HD+ resolution. The display of the Xiaomi Mi 11 has a 120 Hz refresh rate and the HDR10+ certification, as well as a very high brightness up to 1500 nits. The display received an A+ from DisplayMate and it is actually one of the best panels out there. But the OPPO Reno5 Pro+ is not joking with its 90 Hz AMOLED display, and neither the AMOLED panel of the Vivo X60 Pro. Further, all the phones feature an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Hardware/Software

If you want the most powerful smartphone, you must go for Xiaomi Mi 11. It is the first and at this moment the only phone fueled by the Snapdragon 888 mobile platform: the latest and most powerful SoC by Qualcomm. The phone also offers up to 12 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 3.1 native storage. But the Vivo X60 Pro is still a very nice flagship thanks to its Exynos 1050 chipset built at 5 nm, and it offers the same memory configuration. With the OPPO Reno 5 Pro+, you get an older Snapdragon 865 chipset, but it is still flagship-class.

Camera

Just do not choose the Xiaomi Mi 11 if you need the most advanced camera phone. Due to the lack of a telephoto sensor and a periscope sensor, it does not support optical zoom. You can get the optical zoom with the Oppo Reno5 Pro+ and Vivo X60 Pro. The latter has the best zoom capabilities and Carl Zeiss lenses, but the former has a better main camera, at least on the paper: a 50 MP Sony IMX766 sensor. Overall, the Vivo X60 Pro looks slightly more advanced as a camera phone, thanks to great secondary sensors.

Battery

Xiaomi Mi 11 has the biggest battery, but it does not necessarily mean it has a longer battery life in every scenario. Given its higher display resolution, it has a shorter battery life in some situations. The Oppo Reno5 Pro+ has a good 4500 mAh battery, but you should note that the 7 nm Snapdragon 865 chipset is less efficient. Xiaomi Mi 11 is the only one to feature wireless charging, but the Oppo Reno5 Pro+ has the fastest charging tech with a 65W power.

Price

The prices of Xiaomi Mi 11 start from €504/$611 just like the Oppo Reno5 Pro+, while Vivo X60 Pro starts from €565/$685. There is not a definitive winner of this comparison: the Oppo Reno5 Pro+ has the best design and great cameras, Vivo X60 Pro is the greatest camera phone and it boasts a 5 nm chipset, Xiaomi Mi 11 has the best display and hardware but it is inferior as a camera phone. A few days ago, OPPO officially launched its next-generation Reno-series smartphones in its home market China — OPPO Reno5 lineup. The flagship device in the lineup — OPPO Reno5 Pro+ is now available for purchase in China.

It is priced at 3,999 yuan, which roughly converts to $612 for the 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage model. There’s also a 12GB RAM model which is priced at 4,499 yuan, which is approximately $689. The device comes in two color options — Black and White.

Coming to the specifications, the smartphone features a 6.5-inch Full HD+ curved display that offers a 90Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, it is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset with up to 12GB RAM and 256GB storage.

The phone’s highlight is the camera department, which features a quad-camera setup on the back. There’s a 50MP Sony IMX766 primary sensor, a 16MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 13MP telephoto lens, and a 2MP maco lens.

In the software department, the smartphone runs the latest Android 11 operating system with the company’s own ColorOS 11 custom user interface on top. There’s also a gaming mode that offers a 4D experience.

Connectivity options on the device include 5G, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS, NFC, and USB Type-C port. The device is powered by a 4,500mAh battery that supports SuperVOOC 2.0 65W fast charging technology and reverse charging.

We recommend not to give so much importance to the display and go ahead by evaluating the other specifications of these handsets.

With the OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G, you get a 48 MP main sensor with OIS (the Sony IMX586), a 13 MP telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom, and a 12 MP ultrawide camera which also works as a dedicated video camera. The front cameras are exactly the same: two 32 MP sensors with f/2.4 focal aperture. So, despite it is an older phone, the OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G is a better camera phone. The battery capacity is the weakest point of the OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G: it has just 4000 mAh. The OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G has a bigger 4350 mAh battery providing a way longer battery life. Both the phones support 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging technology allowing them to fully-charge with blazing speeds. You need just 36 minutes to charge the OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G from 0 to 100 percent, and just a few minutes more for the Reno5 Pro 5G. Further, the Reno5 Pro 5G features reverse charging.

Price

The OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G launched in the Chinese market with a starting price of about €430/$525: it is still not available in the global market. The listing price of the OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G for the global market is €799/$975 for the 12/256 GB configuration. The Realme X7 Pro has 120 Hz and it offers a smoother viewing experience. The Redmi K30 Pro has the HDR10+ certification, but given the standard refresh rate, it is a less interesting option. The OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G sits right in the middle with its 90 Hz refresh rate and high 1100 nits peak brightness.

Specs & Software

The best hardware department belongs to the Redmi K30 Pro: first of all, it has a stronger chipset. The Snapdragon 865 platform is actually more powerful than the Dimensity 1000+ found on its two rivals. Further, the Redmi K30 Pro packs UFS 3.1 internal storage instead of UFS 2.1. The OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G packs a higher amount of RAM in its most expensive configuration (12 GB), but it has UFS 2.1 storage and Dimensity 1000+. But you should note that OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G runs Android 11 out of the box, so it is supposed to receive longer software support.

In each case, you get midrange cameras. The OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G is more interesting as a camera phone because it has a brighter focal aperture for the main sensor. A few days ago, OPPO had launched its new OPPO Reno5 and Reno5 Pro smartphones in China, both of which went on sale today at 10:00 AM local time. Now, the official data released by OPPO shows the popularity of the devices.

The company has shared that in just 10 minutes of sale going live, the Reno5 series models generated revenue of 100 million yuan.

The Reno5 8GB + 128GB model is priced at 2,699 yuan (~$412) while the 12GB + 256GB model costs 2,999 yuan (~$458). On the other hand, the 8GB + 128GB model of the Reno5 Pro is priced at 3,399 yuan (~$519) while the 12GB + 256GB model costs 3,799 yuan, which is about $581.

Coming to the specifications, the Reno5 features a 6.43-inch Full HD+ OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SoC. On the other hand, the Pro variant comes with a 6.55-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ chipset.

In the camera department, both the devices have a quad-camera setup on the back. The standard model features 64 MP + 8 MP + 2 MP + 2 MP sensors and the same configuration is present on the Pro model. On the front side, the devices come with a 32 MP snapper.

Both the smartphones are running the latest Android 11 operating system out-of-the-box with the company’s own ColorOS 11 on top. While the OPPO Reno5 is powered by a 4,300mAh battery, the Reno5 Pro is powered by a 4,350mAh battery. Both of them come with the support of 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging.

OPPO is gearing up to launch its next-generation smartphone lineup and as per the reports, the company is expected to launch the OPPO Reno5 series in its home country China on 10th December. However, the company is yet to officially confirm this, even though the phones are now up for reservation on JD.com.

Now, ahead of the official launch in the coming days, some interesting details about the phones have surfaced online. As per the report, the upcoming OPPO Reno5 series smartphones use luminous materials, making it the first in the world to do so.

The usage of luminous materials on the smartphone will offer a significant improvement in terms of face recognition. Previous reports have revealed that the Reno5 and Reno5 Pro will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G and MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ chipsets, respectively. There will also be a PRo+ model powered by SD865 SoC.

The smartphones will be featuring a quad-camera setup on the back, consisting of a 64-megapixel primary sensor. On the front side, it seems that the devices will feature a 32-megapixel snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

The Reno5 series models are also confirmed to sport Reno Glow 2.0 design and will come with support for the 65W fast charging technology. We expect to know more about the devices in the coming days.

A pair of models alleged to be the upcoming OPPO Reno5 Pro was yesterday listed on the database of China’s telecoms regulatory agency TENAA. The listing gave us an idea of some of the key specs the device would feature but was devoid of the usual TENAA images.

TENAA has now uploaded the images of the purported Reno5 Pro 5G which actually appears under the model name OPPO PDSM00 / PDST00. We can’t clearly make out the full features of the display but it seems to have a curved edge display. The phone is likely coming with a notch-less design, perhaps a hole-punch design.

The rear aspect is fairly visible, showing that the device will feature a Quad camera setup stacked in a vertically aligned module at the back. The listing shows the camera sensors include a 64MP main sensor as well as an 8MP ultrawide camera and two 2MP sensors, likely for macro and depth photography.

The TENAA listing also shows the Reno5 Pro 5G will feature a 6.55-inch  AMOLED display with an FHD+ resolution of 2400×1080 pixels. The phone has a dimension of 159.7×73.2×7.6mm and weighs 173g. The device will also pack a 4,250mAh battery.

In other aspects, Oppo is also said to be working on three Reno5 devices which include the Reno5, Reno5 Pro and a third model which may likely be dubbed Reno5 Pro Plus. One of the models will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset while the Pro model will be powered by the Dimensity 1000+ chipset and the third is rumored to feature a Snapdragon 865 chip.

OPPO is expected to announce the Reno5 series pretty soon considering the steady influx of leaked details and rumours concerning the series.
