If a new report coming from China is to be believed, then OPPO is working on a self-developed application processor (AP) which is expected to get launched in 2023. The mass production of the chip will be done using TSMC’s 6nm process.

Along with that, the company is also working on its own System On Chip (SoC) which will integrate the Application Processor (AP) and a Modem. This chip is expected to get launched in 2024 and will be manufactured using a 4nm process by TSMC.

OPPO has so far launched its own NPU chip named Mariana MariSilicon X. The company has said that front-end design, back-end design, IP design, memory architecture, ARM CPU design scheme, algorithm, and supply chain tape-out are completed by the company’s own team which includes the design, digital verification, and the back-end integration team.

The upcoming smartphone SoC from OPPO, which is expected to be launched in a couple of years, may not be on par with the offerings from Qualcomm and MediaTek in terms of performance. However, the company is expected to start using its own chips with budget or low-cost smartphones and then gradually keep using them to power more devices.

During this conference, the company unveiled a number of new technologies, which included its first self develop NPU chipset, the MariSilicon X.

The Chinese smartphone maker’s Founder and CEO, Chen Mingyong, showcased the new first self developed chipset. As per the official announcement, the new MariSilicon X NPU is an imaging based chipset that was independently designed and developed by the company. The senior executive stated that the chipset was named after the Mariana Trench, which is the deepest part of the world. This particular name was set to signify the great depth of the company’s “imagination” and innovation.

During the announcement, the Founder also added that tech giants need to develop core technologies to be prepared for any challenged that they might face in the future. In other words, this chip is also its step towards more self sufficiency. The new MariSilicon X is manufactured using the 6nm process from TSMC and seeks to improve imaging performance of upcoming Oppo smartphones. The company further added that the new chipset will be available in handsets starting from next year.

The new chipset will offer real time AI computing to improve energy efficiency while also offering “industry leading” ultra HDR capabilities. This chipset would also enable lossless real time RAW captures and maximize the RGBW sensor’s performance as well as offer extreme dynamic range via 20bit HDR. Notably, OPPO also officially announced that this new chipset will be featured in 2022 Find X series flagship phones, which would mark the arrival of the dual chip technology.

Now, a new report from a tipster has claimed that the chip will be based on TSMC‘s 6nm process technology and might be launching soon.

A known tipster @数码闲聊站 on Weibo (a Chinese microblogging website) shared new information related to the company’s upcoming self developed chipset. While the Chinese smartphone brand did not not share any specifics regarding this chip, the tipster revealed some key details. As per the social media post, the new proprietary chipset in question will be an NPU (Neural Network Processing Unit). The tipster added that this new chipset will also offer new imaging solutions and will be arriving in smartphones soon as well.

Similarly, Huawei had also launched its HiSilicon Kirin 970 chipset back in 2017, which also featured an NPU for the first time. Now, it seems that Oppo is also following this move for its own self developed chipset. Notably, Digital Chat Station claimed that the new chip will not be exclusive to Oppo smartphones alone, and will even include OnePlus models as well. For those unaware, the former had merged with the latter earlier this year, with both brands being collectively known as Oujia.

The tipster stated that phones from Oujia will feature these new chips that will also be based on TSMC’s (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co) 6nm chip processing technology. Unfortunately, this is all the information we have at the moment but keep in mind that this report is still unconfirmed as of right now, so take it with a grain of salt.

The company indeed confirmed this in January 2020 but is yet to share further details. Apparently, the Chinese tech giant is still recruiting experts for the project.

A new report claims the BBK subsidiary is poaching MediaTek and UNISOC engineers in its bid to woo them over. Jeffery Ju, MediaTek’s former co-chief operating officer is reported to have been hired. While Ju left MediaTek in 2017, OPPO is also looking to hire another top executive from MediaTek’s 5G smartphone chip development in a couple of months. The report also tips OPPO as spreading its tentacles to pick up executives from Qualcomm and Huawei’s HiSilicon unit, adds the report.

OPPO’s effort to commence chip manufacture isn’t unrelated to Huawei’s predicament even though the company believes owning the chip design capability will give it more control over its supply chain, according to sources. The path to outputting a workable chipset isn’t a rapid one, though. It might take up to a year before a chipset is born. The success of such chipset against those from Qualcomm and Mediatek looks bleak. Recall Xiaomi made a similar effort with the Surge S1 but since then nothing as heard about the self-developed chip. We hope to get more details of the OPPO chipset in the coming months.
