In March, OPPO announced the OPPO Watch as its first smartwatch. The elegant wearable went official in 46mm and 41mm variants. The 46mm model came in aluminum and stainless-steel options. Today, the Chinese manufacturer announced the OPPO Watch ECG edition at the OPPO Developers Conference (ODC). The OPPO Watch ECG edition is a variant of the 46mm stainless steel model that is capable of taking an electrocardiogram (ECG) reading.

OPPO Watch ECG edition specifications and features

The OPPO Watch ECG edition measures 46 x 39 x 11.35mm and it has a 316L stainless steel chassis and ceramic / sapphire back. The smartwatch features a fluoro rubber strap. The device weighs 45.5 grams without the strap. The right edge of the device is flanked with navigation and function keys.

The smartwatch flaunts a flexible AMOLED display of 1.91 inches that offers 402 x 476 pixels resolution, 326ppi pixel density, and 100 percent DCI-P3 color gamut. It has a 430mAh battery, which charges to full capacity in just 15 minutes by using the Watch VOOC Flash Charge technology. In Smart Mode, it can last for 40 hours and for up to 21 days in Low Power mode.

Coming to the main feature of the OPPO Watch ECG edition, it supports professional electrocardiogram tracking. The company claims that the ECG detection on the smartwatch offers medical-grade measurement accuracy. Also, the device is capable of providing real-time ECG reading just by tapping on the watch. The ECG tracking allows the OPPO Watch ECG edition to find out common heart abnormalities such as atrial fibrillation, premature heartbeats, and supraventricular tachycardia.

The OPPO Watch ECG edition also offers round the clock heart rate monitoring. It can not only monitor heart rate in real-time but also vibrate when it detects an abnormal reading. The OPPO Watch ECG edition when connected to the mobile health app, it can recommend a tailored health improvement plan. The OPPO Watch ECG edition supports e-SIM, which allows users to make calls independently without a smartphone.

The OPPO Watch ECG edition is powered by the Snapdragon 2500 chipset and Apollo 3 low-power chip. It has 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of native storage. The device runs on the ColorOS Watch edition that allows it to pair with Android 6.0 and above devices. The OS tags along with the Breeno voice assistant. The Watch ECG supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 LE connectivity and it comes with built-in GPS. It offers a 5ATM water-resistance.

The OPPO Watch ECG edition is now up for pre-sales across major retailer platforms in China. It carries a price tag of 2,499 Yuan (~$366).

You cannot just slam ECG into a watch and launch it, not unless you have received approval from the relevant agencies in the countries where it will be sold. This explains why the OPPO Watch didn’t have ECG when it was announced even though it was a feature that was teased before the watch was launched.

OPPO has now announced that the OPPO Watch ECG version will get a global release on Thursday, September 24. The announcement was made on Weibo by one of OPPO’s official accounts.

The post said the device has been certified as a Class II medical device by the National Food and Drug Administration. The watch has also been approved by the US FDA.

We expect the OPPO Watch ECG version will have similar specs to the 46mm stainless steel version sold in China. This means it should have a stainless steel case, ceramic shell, and sapphire glass.

The OPPO Watch has a flexible AMOLED display and is powered by the Snapdragon Wear 3100 (Snapdragon Wear 2500 for the Chinese version) and a low-power chip called the Apollo 3. It has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. There is 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, and NFC. It also has a 430mAh battery with support for Watch VOOC Flash Charge.

The stainless steel version of the watch which is the most expensive one is ¥2499 (~$367). We presume the ECG version will have a price tag not less than ¥2999 or $399 when it launches.
