After some of the most recent devices from Xiaomi were updated, even the older Xiaomi Mi5 and Mi Note 2 can now run the latest Android Oreo version. The update to Android Oreo has just been released under the Global Beta ROM. It is not the final stable update, so it does not arrive via OTA on the Global Stable firmware. Even if you own one of these two phones and you have the Global Beta ROM installed, you will still need to flash Android Oreo manually.

On both the Xiaomi Mi5 and Xiaomi Mi Note 2, the update to Android Oreo is based on the MIUI 9 which comes in the version 8.2.1. The firmware includes the security patch from the month of February, which is very important because it fixes the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities.

The update also includes several bug fixes for issues present in the previous version of the firmware. It is possible to flash the firmware manually via fastboot and TWRP, but you need an unlocked bootloader in order to do it. If you do not want to install the Global Beta on your Xiaomi Mi5 or Mi Note 2, you can wait for the final version which should come out in the next couple of weeks.

Even Galaxy A8 which is the latest phone unveiled by the company in December 2017 has Android Nougat out of the box. While we are yet to see the latest version on the main flagships by the company, some guys from XDA Developers made a list of the Galaxy devices which will be probably updated to Android Oreo.

The list is based on some XML files found in the Oreo beta firmware for the Note 8, containing the code names of the handsets. While the list is not a final proof of the arrival of the update to Android Oreo for the devices, if we consider the current info and the history of previous updates it is very likely that the handsets listed will receive the update. The Samsung devices contained in the list are Galaxy A3 (2017), Galaxy A5 (2017), Galaxy A7 (2017), Galaxy A8 (2016), Galaxy A8 (2018), Galaxy A8+ (2018), Galaxy J3 (2017), Galaxy J5 (2017), Galaxy J7 (2017), Galaxy J7+, Galaxy J7 Duos (2017), Galaxy J7 Max, Galaxy J7 Neo, Galaxy J7 Prime, Galaxy Note FE, Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S8 Active, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

Among the Samsung devices that are not listed but could still receive the update, there are Galaxy C7 Pro, Galaxy C9 Pro, Galaxy J5 Pro, Galaxy J7 Pro and Galaxy S7 Active. At last, the tablets that should be updated are Galaxy Tab A 8.0, Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017), Galaxy Tab A 10.1, Galaxy Tab Active 2, Galaxy Tab E 8.0 and Galaxy Tab S3. The update to Android Oreo will be customized with the Samsung Experience 9 user interface which will contain further improvements and new features, besides the main changes of Oreo. Among these, there will be an improved keyboard and Bixby.

But the actual name of Android O still remains a controversy that has persisted for a while now. The meaning has hovered between Oatmeal Cookies and Oreo for a long time now but Google’s VP Hiroshi Lockheimer seems to have hinted at another name entirely for the new Android version.

The Google senior VP who oversees Platforms and Ecosystem, including Android, shared a photo on Twitter which seems to suggest that the O on Android O may stand for Orangina. The photo contains a number of names including Onion and olive but Orangina is very much prominent than the others and is really the only sweet thing on the list. In case you don’t know, Orangina is a sweet carbonated orange drink found in France. The Google Exec didn’t disclose any thing else so we can’t be so sure about this. But if it eventually turns out to be true, this will be the first time Google’s naming convention would deviate from desserts and candies in the naming of Android. However, Oreo seems likely to be the name of the new Android OS, as the same VP had teased Oreo in the past. Google recently teamed up with Oreo to launched an Oreo minigame and also recently, Oreo cookies were laid out for the press at this year’s Google I/O event.

Google has already confirmed that Android O will be available for AOSP and ecosystem releases in the third quarter of this year after the Fourth and final Developer Preview has rolled out. Although there is no specific release date yet, a number of sources are pointing to a release in August this year. Android 8.0 is expected to come with a number of new features, including support for picture-in-picture, application badges, notification dots, support for automatic filling, higher text selection, a substantial improvement of the notification system. There are also some changes seen in the Developer Preview already, such a new media notification, new icon and clock.
